San Diego Comic Con 2016

SECRET IDENTITY

Here is a pic of Henry Cavill going incognito in V mask to surprise the cast of Suicide Squad to get autographs on his shirt during San Diego Comic Con 2016.

McFARLANE LIVE

On May the Fourth, 2016 Todd McFarlane took to the relatively new Facebook Live and led his fans in a lesson on how to draw the Wookie warrior Chewbacca. McFarlane often took to Facebook Live to engage his fans. It was great access to an icon and living legend in the comic industry.

NOT THAT FAR AHEAD OF THE CURVE

Madeline spotted this red Stormtrooper in the background of a picture (Page 62) from NYCC 2016 and wondered why everyone was so excited in July 2019 for the Hasbro Black Series toy pictured above. The new Sith Trooper from Rise of Skywalker is the new design of a First Order Stormtrooper compared to the classic Stormtrooper costume. The main design difference is in the helmet, the eyes connect along the side with the breathing tubes on the helmet for a streamlined look. This figure will be one of the hottest collectibles of San Diego Comic Con 2019. I personally will be glued to Hasbro Pulse when the excess figures go on sale later in the month.

This isn’t the first red Stormtrooper figure that has been on sale. That honor goes to the Target exclusive Funko Pop red Stormtrooper in 2016 which was exclusively for sale to redCard members. Also, a red First Order Stormtrooper named Cardinal was featured prominently in the Phasma prequel book that built a lengthy backstory to the mysterious character in 2017. So, while exciting, the idea is not completely new. —LV

PERSPECTIVE

My first thought on seeing this picture was, I hope 400 of the comments are about the size of his hands...

STAND WITH KAEPERNICK

The whole Colin Kaepernick situation makes me sick. We want our athletes to not be generic and stale, to make a stand and say something. LeBron gets lauded for orchestrating the wearing of hoodies in support of Trayvon Martin. LeBron again (who is one of the most socially conscious athletes of this era) with Chris Paul and Carmelo make an impassioned speech at the Espys in support of the black lives matter movement. That group is praised. Michael Jordan was often chided during his career for not taking a stand and even once saying “republicans buy sneakers, too.” He took criticism for his apparent blackballing of Craig Hodges when Hodges questioned Jordan over the work conditions in Nike plants.

Kaepernick decided to stand for something by taking a knee. Isn’t this what we want from our athletes? Now a QB who completed 60 percent of his passes, threw for 16 touchdowns versus 4 interceptions, and rushed for another 468 yards and 2 touchdowns can’t find a job. Basically, it ensures that athletes will now be even more generic, not say anything controversial (save for richard Sherman) or protest, and simply toe the line in fear that they will be blacklisted… This is sad for the NFL and sad for all sports in general.

LASS KICKER

Before she was the man, she was the Lass Kicker with a steampunk-inspired gimmick. Becky also liked a picture I drew of her before performing on SmackDown Live later that night, Nov. 1, 2016.
