The way Luis tells the story, everybody was so poor. Everyone brought food and ate at their desks. Well, not Luis. He didn’t want to eat at his desk. He had to fi nd nooks that didn’t include a view of the local exhibitionist or where coworkers could ask him what he was eating. Niche was the place Luis learned to eat leftovers. He would microwave things I don’t make anymore, like chicken potpie or lasagna, and hide from people who wanted to know what that smell was.

Every office talks about food, but Niche had a lot of people who were interested in improving their kitchen skills or trying restaurants they’d heard about. Eating well was more on trend than traveling.

Food challenges came about because guys do dumb things with food. It would build camaraderie. Luis and Tom had competed in office food challenges separately at previous jobs, so sitting down to see who could eat 20 chicken nuggets faster was natural. —MV

FIVE FOODS

Looking back, Madeline decided there were five things ADW seemed to obsess over

ALCOHOL Recipes, reviews, and pictures where drinks were consumed... Way back, Heineken was the go-to drink for ADW production

BURGERS Multiple covers were devoted to the best places and types of hamburgers. Mac&cheese? Ramen? Black bean? There is no end to burgers

WATER Not only did it appear in tips, but also a memorable (giant) water glass resided in the original department

FIBER ONE Snacks are important to office culture and this one made it into multiple sections of the Dubbs

CHIPS Coffee is important but did not receive as many reviews as chips (going back to the importance of snacks)
