FOREWORD

ART DUBAI Art Dubai is an international art fair with roots in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia. Over the past 12 years, the fair has become a cornerstone of the region’s fast-growing art scene, playing an integral role in connecting regional and international art communities and becoming one of the most globalized meeting points in the art world, mirroring the dynamism of its host city. The 13th edition of Art Dubai takes place March 20-23, 2019 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). The fair features 92 galleries from over 40 different countries, divided across four gallery sections, Contemporary, Modern, Bawwaba and Residents. RESIDENTS Residents is one of the fair’s core gallery programmes which promotes cross-cultural dialogue and cultural diplomacy at the highest level. Dedicated to solo presentations from selected galleries, the 6-to-8-week programme invites their artists to immerse themselves in the local art scene and create a body of work which merges their distinct artistic practice with their surroundings. The artworks produced are shown at the fair and presented by the artists’ respective galleries. This one of a kind programme shifts the focus from the standard fair model of being gallery centric towards a more artist focused effort. Residents 2019 presents an intimate selection of 12 solo gallery presentations by artists from Latin America working across all media.

PROGRAMME PARTNER MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION Residents is supported by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MOFA). MOFA are year-round supporters of Art Dubai’s Residents and Global Art Forum programmes, with the aim of fostering cultural exchanges between the UAE and the rest of the world. In its first year the areas of focus for the collaboration have been the United Kingdom, Singapore and Latin America.

Something I was preoccupied with whilst planning the fair is the notion of ‘the perception of others’: the lens through which we view others, and indirectly ourselves. By taking these artists out of their usual environment and existing arts communities, challenging them to adapt and exchange in dialogue, we hope to see not just some exciting works but how their perception of others, and the UAE, shifts. For the smart collector, these artworks are very exciting pieces – completely new, shaped by and created in a new context.” PABLO DEL VAL, ART DUBAI ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

SECTION CURATORS Residents 2019 is co-curated by Emirati curator Munira Al Sayegh, a well-established name in the UAE art scene, and Brazilian Fernanda Brenner, Founder and Artistic Director of São Paulo-based contemporary art space Pivô and one of the most influential curators in Latin America.

MUNIRA AL SAYEGH Munira Al Sayegh (UAE, 1983) holds an undergraduate degree from University of London’s School of African and Oriental Studies in History of Art and Archaeology, with a focus on the Middle East. 6

It is extremely important that the artists who are participating in this residency infiltrate further than just the surface of the United Arab Emirates. It is key for the artists to engage and exchange with local artists in order to further their understanding of the makeup of what the UAE really has to offer. MUNIRA AL SAYEGH, RESIDENTS SECTION CURATOR

Among them: Cildo Meireles, Mario Garcia Torres, Haroon Mirza, Erika Verzutti, Lucas Arruda, Rodrigo Hernandez, Danilo Dueñas, Anna Maria Maiolino, Laura Lima and Alexandre da Cunha. Brenner curated So Far So Good at White Cube in São Paulo (2015), and Neither at Mendes Wood DM, Brussels (2017) and most recently Caixa Preta (2018) at Fudação Iberê Camargo in Porto Alegre, along with Bernando de Souza, Veronica Stigger and Eduardo Sterzi. She is a contributing editor for Frieze, and her writings have appeared in a number of catalogues and publications such as ArtReview, Mousse, Terremoto and The Exhibitionist, where she is a member of the editorial board. 8

The artists we’ve selected all work with different media and come from different backgrounds. Even though they share a continental territory, each country in Latin America is very different and full of complexities, so my intention is to deconstruct this idea of homogeneity and instead highlight the singularities.” FERNANDA BRENNER, RESIDENTS SECTION CURATOR

A GENTIL CARIOCA RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL A Gentil Carioca was founded in 2003 and it is a contemporary art gallery that differs from other galleries because of its particular characteristics, one of which is that it was founded by three artists – Márcio Botner, Ernesto Neto and Laura Lima – an initiative that makes it unique in Brazil. This gallery is a place to think, produce, experience, celebrate and market the art. Located at the historic center of Rio de Janeiro, more specifically in the region known as Saara, the largest outdoor market in Latin America which was founded in the last century by Arab and Jewish immigrants. Around the gallery you can find all kinds of trinkets and spices, a fundamental attraction for many artists and curious people. A Gentil is present in a 1920s townhouse over one of these stores and also on a three floors building listed as historical patrimony, occupying a crossroad in the heart of this market. A Gentil Carioca was born mixed to capture and spread the diversity of art in Brazil and in the world. The gallery believes that each work of art is a cultural particle with enough power to radiate culture and education. Its fixed address takes place of concentration and irradiation of the voice of different artists and ideas, as well as advocates the expansion of the potential field of action of art by stimulating the network of collectors and lovers of art in general.

LAURA LIMA BRAZIL, 1971 Laura Lima’s works are experimental arrangements that explore the margins of our perception along the boundaries between reality, illusion, and fiction. Working across mediums, Laura Lima frequently subjects the body to surprising juxtapositions with objects and architectures. With each installation, Lima consistently reinvents the viewer’s encounter with her work, skillfully considering the nature of perception, social relationships, and human behavior, while creating profound and startling aesthetic experiences. Laura Lima won the Marcantonio Vilaça Premium in 2007, and was nominated for the Francophone and Hans Nefken Award in 2011. She is the 2014 recipient of the BACA (Bonnefanten Award for Contemporary Art). Laura is also the co-founder of gallery A Gentil Carioca, Rio de Janeiro, along with the artists Márcio Botner and Ernesto Neto STUDIO: Tashkeel, Dubai, UAE

PIERO ATCHUGARRY GALLERY GARZÓN, URUGUAY MIAMI, FL, UNITED STATES Located in Garzón, Uruguay, Piero Atchugarry is a contemporary art gallery that focuses on primary market and the representation of a selected group of artists. The gallery was founded in September 2013 and soon it moved to a larger space in Garzón, occupying an old converted stable. The same year the gallery began a programme of residences; artists from all over the world are invited to regenerate and create specific artworks inspired by the calm and beauty of the Uruguayan landscape and nature. The programme aims to educate the public on artistic processes by converting the gallery into an artist studio. Visitors are welcome to come and explore artistic practices in situ, as well as to meet and exchange ideas with the artists. Each visiting artist develops a body of work in Garzón and creates a site-specific installation for the sculpture park of 159 hectares (54 acres) surrounding the gallery, leaving a permanent memory of his or her passage. The focus of the gallery is to promote art internationally and therefore it represents artists from Brazil, Italy, Japan, Uruguay and the United States. In addition to a consistent schedule of exhibitions the gallery collaborates with museums and institutions, and participates to several international art fairs in Latin America, United States, Europe and Middle East. On December 3rd 2019, the gallery will open a second location, expanding to the United States and occupying a space in 5520 NE 4th Ave, Miami. This artistic City will be an exciting location to promote international contemporary art and foster the career of the emerging and the established artists of the gallery.

VERÓNICA VÁZQUEZ URUGUAY, 1970 Through a process of finding and collecting materials, Verónica Vázquez repurposes discarded objects to create visually striking sculptures and wall reliefs. Her work references both the history of Uruguayan Constructivism as well as the legacy of the Italian Arte Povera. STUDIO: Warehouse421, Abu Dhabi, UAE

LUCIANA LAMOTHE BUENOS AIRES, 1975 Luciana Lamothe works with sculpture, assemblage and installation to interrogate the dialectical relationship between construction and destruction, the social and the anti-social. The ambivalence of the materials she works with, in terms of strength and ductility, soft and hard, can be clearly perceived in her pieces. STUDIO: NYUAD, Abu Dhabi, UAE

GALLERIA CONTINUA SAN GIMIGNANO, ITALY BEIJING, CHINA LES MOULINS, FRANCE HAVANA, CUBA Galleria Continua opened in San Gimignano, Italy, in 1990, as the result of the initiative of three friends: Mario Cristiani, Lorenzo Fiaschi and Maurizio Rigillo. Occupying a former cinema, Galleria Continua established itself in an unexpected location, far from the big cities and smoothly running art circuits – in San Gimignano, a town steeped in history and somehow out of time, in the heart of Tuscany. In 2004 Galleria Continua began a new adventure in Beijing, China, showing contemporary Western artists in an area where they were still little seen. Three years later, in 2007, Galleria Continua inaugurated a new peculiar site for large-scale creations – Les Moulins – in the Parisian countryside. In 2015 Galleria Continua embarked on new paths, opening a space in La Habana, Cuba, devoted to cultural projects designed to overcome every frontier.

JOSÉ MANUEL MESÍAS CUBA, 1990 José Manuel Mesías takes notable moments from history and re-contextualises them, combining them with contemporary moments and more intimate occurrences. Mesías aims to capture urban beauty and simultaneous deterioration in his works; he seeks to portray the same anxiety and marvel he experiences through his everyday life and that, he argues, the world provokes in equal amounts. INSTITUTO DE VISIÓN BOGOTÁ, COLOMBIA Instituto de Visión* is a space for research, experimentation and exchange between local and international artists, markets, and cultural agents. Our programme is focused on conceptual practices that propose micro-revolutions, original perspectives and personal ecosystems inserted into a specific context. The poetics that inspire us originate in interchange, tropicality, decoding, cotidianity, archives and historic revision. Through the programme Visionarios, Instituto de Visión aims at revisiting the history of Colombian art to give a deserved position to artists who remained, despite their challenging and committed posture, alienated from the academic/official recount of our Art History. Instituto de Visión presents a programme of public art that will go beyond the walls of our gallery to bring artistic proposals to urban spaces not typically considered as artistic settings. *Named after the work Instituto de Visión (2008) by artist Nicolás Consuegra.

MAZENETT QUIROGA LINA MAZENETT COLOMBIA, 1989 DAVID QUIROGA COLOMBIA, 1984 Mazenett Quiroga are interested in exploring the interrelationship between organisms and the misnamed “resources” of our environment. Their distribution and resignification through culture. They strive to blur the distinction between the concepts of nature and culture. The duo have developed a practice based on an oscillation between past and present, science and mythology, Amerindian cultures and western influence, finding interstices between these apparent polarities. MENDES WOOD DM SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL BRUSSELS, BELGIUM NEW YORK, UNITED STATES Mendes Wood DM was founded in 2010 by partners Felipe Dmab, Matthew Wood and Pedro Mendes with the intent to exhibit international and Brazilian artists in a context conducive to critical dialogue and cross-pollination. Central to the gallery’s programme is a concern for regional difference and individuation while fostering cosmopolitanism and collaboration. Inspired by a belief that artistic practices broaden the scope of human agency and have the power to both touch and change the world, Mendes Wood DM cultivates a programme premised on conceptualism, political resistance and intellectual rigor. In 2017, Mendes Wood DM inaugurated its first North American exhibition space in New York with a series of two-person shows juxtaposing historical and contemporary material; including artists such as Lucas Arruda and On Kawara, Sonia Gomes and A.R. Penck. In the same year, Mendes Wood DM expanded its European presence with a new gallery in Brussels founded in partnership with longtime friend and collaborator Carolyn Drake Kandiyoti. Located in a historic townhouse, the space lends itself to ambitious curatorial projects and mono-graphic exhibitions, as well as welcoming artists and curators in residence. The residency is integral to the gallery project to establish a place for the active exchange, creation and reformulation of varying artistic narratives.

LUIZ ROQUE BRAZIL, 1979 Attracted by the power of image and, in particular, by sensations that stem from the sense of vision, visual artist Luiz Roque’s work crosses different territories, such as the genre of science fiction, the legacy of Modernism and pop culture, in order to understand and propose ingenious and visually sensual narratives. The gallery, located in the Santa Cecilia district of SĂŁo Paulo, has 400 square meters of exhibition space dedicated to presenting Brazilian as well as international artists, and functions as a platform for establishing a discourse with curators, critics and collectors. The main purpose for the gallery is to promote artists who are working in the most diverse media, including photography, painting, sculpture, installation, and video.

FLORA REBOLLO BRAZIL, 1983 In her most recurring practice, Flora Rebollo creates dynamic large-scale colorful compositions which employs a number of graphic features and are intriguing by both their profuse use of electric and muddy colors and their elusive shapes that appear to rebuild themselves incessantly. REVOLVER GALERĂ?A LIMA, PERU ARGENTINA, BUENO AIRES Revolver GalerĂa is a project created by artist Giancarlo Scaglia, which began in 2008 with the intention of boosting the Peruvian the contemporary art scene, and since, Revolver has been showing the most exciting new generation of artists from Peru and around Latin America. From the beginning, the gallery set clear targets in its mission as a private platform for the exhibition, promotion and management of contemporary artists and worked to re-direct from the local scene and, instead, to aim towards the exchange and connection with the rest of the world, reinforcing the idea that it is the active trade of discourses that will articulate further development. Focused on its role as the catalyzing nexus between artists, critics, museum directors, curators, and collectors, Revolver reaffirms that the sum of these -resulting in intelligent art collection- will be essential triggers for the development of a wide range art scenario.

JERRY B. MARTIN COLOMBIA, 1976 For over two decades, Jerry B. Martin has been using a typewriter as the main tool for his practice: a private performance based on transcription as a means for cognition. By typing and over-typing sentences, paragraphs, texts and even complete books, the artist creates lights and shadows that end up translating information into an image on paper that establishes links between author, material, content, process and itself. GALERIA SERVANDO HAVANA, CUBA Servando art gallery was created in 2003 in Vedado, Havana. Our work profile focuses mainly on the conceptual and experimental art developed in the country, with an emphasis on emerging creators, hence most of the artists we represent are from the generation of 2000. The preference for a type of art of marked experimentality provides the gallery with an unusual variety of media that transits from the most traditional ones, such as painting, drawing and sculpture, to those introduced by postmodern renovations, namely, installations, video art, etc. Since its creation Servando gallery has participated in different international fairs in Europe and America (ARCO, Artissima, Houston Fine Art Fair, Hot Art, Art in Lisbon, ArtMadrid, ArtToronto, MACO Mexico). Also, since its foundation it has been working directly with the Biennial of Havana.

LUIS ENRIQUE LÓPEZ-CHÁVEZ CUBA, 1988 In his work, Luis Enrique López-Chávez has been conducting a research exercise on the development of the plastic form and on the frictions that such form generates by introducing itself as an affirmation in the logical space of the world. From this contact with the socio-historical context, with language or with art itself, he proposes an image contained between a conceptual methodology and a un- conscious pulse, between a philosophical proposition and a poetic image. LUISA STRINA SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL In 2019 Galeria Luisa Strina completes 45 years of activity. Luisa Strina started as a merchant in 1970 and opened her gallery in 1974. During the 1970s, Strina introduced into the market diverse exponents of what later would be called Geração 70, such as Cildo Meireles, Tunga, Waltercio Caldas and Antonio Dias. Her gallery was the first Latin-American one invited to participate in the Basel Art Fair, in 1992. During the 1990s she started working with Brazilian and Latin American artists that would afterwards develop an international career, such as Alexandre da Cunha, Fernanda Gomes, Marcius Galan, and Jorge Macchi. Currently, Galeria Luisa Strina represents 43 artists, a mixture of established and emerging artists which are active locally and internationally.

ALEXANDRE DA CUNHA BRAZIL, 1969 Grounded in a material aesthetic and ethic, Alexandre da Cunha makes sculpture and wallmounted work using transformed everyday or found objects. Da Cunha describes his practice as ‘pointing’, not ‘making’: pointing at existing objects in our everyday surroundings, and highlighting or revealing new and unexpected facets or meanings within them. This approach has allowed him to unpick our preconceptions and instinctive responses to things and shift our perspective to new ways of seeing and understanding. STUDIO: Tashkeel, Dubai, UAE
