I NT RODUC T I ON I’m delighted to be joining the fair in time to celebrate its fifth birthday. Having debuted in 2007 with 40 exhibitors and 8,000 visitors, Art Dubai 2011 will host 80 of the world ’s leading galleries, compelling exhibitions, the strongest Global Art Forum to date, the third annual Abraaj Capital Art Prize and a rich programme of performances, artist-led tours, installations and film screenings. We will also collaborate with more cultural institutions in the Gulf, particularly Sharjah Biennial X, highlighting the UAE as the indisputable hub for the arts scenes of the Middle East-North Africa-South Asia (MENASA) region. It is through collaboration that Art Dubai has grown in stature, witnessed by increasing numbers of regional collectors joining the 18,000 visitors that came to Art Dubai in 2010 and a testament to the international enthusiasm for contemporary art from the Middle East and Asia. Dubai has of course been a trading post and meeting point for South Asia, Iran, the Arab world and Africa for hundreds of years. Over the past decade, it has become the commercial art centre for this region and blossomed into a city of ideas, of entrepreneurship, of debate. The homegrown support for artists, projects, fairs and museums has been vital to our success and provides a robust platform for international discourse. Art Dubai is rooted in the region but part of a ‘future conversation’ that critically links Asia and the Middle East with the rest of the world. We hope you’ll join us in this exchange and very much look forward to welcoming you to the fair next March. Antonia Carver Fair Director

GLOBA L ART FORUM The Global Art Forum was launched in 2007 as an initiative of Art Dubai and brings together top art world protagonists for a week of conversation premised on themes driving contemporary art discourse, with a particular emphasis on issues prevalent in the Middle East. Each year, the Forum offers a world-class intellectual arena that stimulates thought and discussion amongst visitors and press. The Forum has attracted international attention through its collaborations with FIAC in Paris, Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (DCAA) in Dubai, Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture & Heritage (ADACH) in Abu Dhabi and the Museum of Islamic Art and Qatar Museums Authority (QMA) in Doha. Global Art Forum is also supported by The National.

P ROJ EC TS Working with participating galleries, artists, artist collectives and non-profit organisations, Art Dubai’s projects offer an important platform across a variety of media including performance, video and installation. Two major projects presented at Art Dubai, the Pakistan Pavilion (Desperately Seeking Paradise, 2008) and the ArtSchool Palestine Pavilion (Mapping Palestine, 2009), received international critical acclaim, becoming a significant factor in bringing greater awareness to contemporary art practice in the region. ART PARK The basement car park of the Madinat Arena has become a destination for emerging and cutting edge art within the framework of Art Dubai over the last three years. Featuring curatorial contributions by Bidoun, ArteEast, The Khatt Foundation, traffic and ArtSchool Palestine, the Art Park has also developed an influential programme of films, book launches and talks relating to the projects. PERFORMANCE Art Park hosted a dynamic programme of performances by international artists such as Shilpa Gupta, Rabih MrouÊ, Susan Hefuna, Joumana Mourad & IJAD Dance Company, Roula Haj-Ismail, Monali Meher and Kirstie Macleod. BIDOUN PROJECTS 2010 Bidoun Projects was the curatorial partner of Art Dubai, responsible for programming a series of non-commercial exhibitions, commissions, screenings and educational events that engaged with the fabric of the fair. The projects ranged from a group exhibition that looked at new and expanded formalist practices to a series of commissions that dwell of the spectacular, temporal nature of an art fair. Bidoun Projects also commissioned artists to act as guides, interpreting elements of the fair through scheduled tours. As part of Bidoun Video in the Art Park, guest curators examined the ways in which large-scale arts events have been promoted through a dynamic video programme. Bidoun Projects is the not-for-profit curatorial wing of Bidoun, the arts organisation and publisher set up in 2003 to support contemporary artists from the Middle East. Bidoun Projects is managed by a group of artists, writers and curators based in Beirut, Cairo, Dubai and New York.

SPONSORS 2010 Art Dubai forges relationships with numerous organisations and corporations to promote awareness of visual culture in the region. The fair is held in partnership with Abraaj Capital and is host to the prestigious Abraaj Capital Art Prize. Abraaj Capital also hosted and programmed the Abraaj Capital Lounge, an exclusive meeting point for their VIP guests and Art Dubai’s Collectors’ Circle. The Jumeirah Patrons’ Preview offered the fair’s high level VIPs a preview of the 2010 fair in the spectacular setting of Madinat Jumeirah. Van Cleef & Arpels presented The Poetry of Time, an exhibition highlighting the artistry and craft of watchmaking through the presentation of museum-quality pieces. The Opening Night by HSBC welcomed an audience exceeding 6,000 guests for the first public viewing of Art Dubai 2010.

THE ABR A A J C A PITAL A RT PR IZE ABRAA J CAPITAL ART PRIZE 2009 First announced in 2008, the annual Abraaj Capital Art Prize is the only art prize specifically for the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia (MENASA) region. Encouraging artists to work with international curators, the prize is unique in rewarding proposals rather than completed works of art. At US $ 1 million in disbursements, it is the world’s most generous art prize. The prize aims to empower potential by giving under-represented contemporary artists from the vibrant MENASA region the resources to further develop their talent. Each year the new artworks are unveiled at Art Dubai and go on to form part of the Abraaj Capital Art Collection. To date works have been exhibited at the Dubai International Financial Centre, Dubai, Maraya Arts Centre, Sharjah and the Museum of Arts & Design, New York. The winners unveiled in March 2009 at Art Dubai were artist Kutlug Ataman (Turkey) and curator Cristiana Perrella (Italy) with Strange Space; artist Nazgol Ansarinia (Iran) and curator Leyla Fakhr (Iran / UK) with Rhyme and Reason and artist Zoulikha Boubadellah (Algeria) and curator Carol Solomon (US) with Walk on the Sky. Pisces. The winners unveiled in March 2010 at Art Dubai were artist Kader Attia (Algeria) and curator Laurie Ann Farrell (US) with History of a Myth: The Small Dome of the Rock; artist Hala Elkoussy (Egypt) and curator Jelle Bouwhuis (The Netherlands) with Myths & Legends Room – The Mural and artist Marwan Sahmarani (Lebanon) and curator Mahita El Bacha Urieta (Spain / Lebanon) with The Feast of the Damned.

WORK ING FOR THE UAE AND THE GULF VISUAL ARTS INTERNSHIP SCHEME The Internship Scheme was initiated by Art Dubai in September 2007. Since then over 200 students and recent graduates from 40 nationalities and 18 institutions have participated in the scheme and gone on to find further work experience opportunities and permanent placements within Art Dubai and its partner organisations. One third of the interns were Emirati and the remaining came from countries ranging from the Middle East, Iran, India, to Peru, Russia, Germany, Sweden, Finland and Lithuania. Art Dubai has fostered close relationships with all major arts faculties in the UAE and abroad. During the fair, students have the opportunity of working with participating galleries, media partners, performing artists, collector’s programmes and the Art Dubai team. Interns gave guided tours to members of the public and students from Sotheby’s Institute of Art, New York and Indus Valley, Karachi. The scheme has launched an international exchange component, with students participating in the Peggy Guggenheim Internship Program in Venice. ART DUBAI WEEK Art Dubai has actively encouraged collaborations with art organisations, colleges, commercial galleries and non-commercial spaces across the UAE and the wider Gulf region. Site visits have included the Bastakiya Art Fair, Tashkeel and the Sharjah Biennial as well as over twenty commercial gallery locations. As a result of these collaborations, Art Dubai Week has become a catalyst for exhibitions, projects and educational initiatives, providing opportunities for new jobs and businesses in the cultural sector, as well as helping to forge cultural links with international organisations. ART BOOK S Operated by Jashanmal Bookstores, Art Books brings the widest range of art related publications ever seen in the UAE to Dubai. Ten book launches and signings have taken place, encouraging intellectual discussion and insights into contemporary critical theory on the visual arts.

START START is a non-profit arts education programme aimed at under-privileged children in the region. Held under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Lateefa bint Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Founder of Tashkeel, it was established by Art Dubai and Al Madad in 2007. Currently operating in refugee camps and orphanages in Jordan, art classes are held by permanent teaching staff supplemented by volunteer artists from across the world. Its purpose is to enrich children’s lives and education through art, giving children an opportunity to express their imagination, enhance their creative skills and offer a form of therapy. Since its inception in 2007, START has reached out to 3,000 children with further programmes planned in Palestine and Lebanon. To date START has been supported by the generosity of the following organisations: Van Cleef and Arpels Chaloub Clifford Chance Al Turki Group

“…it ’s likely that the fair will grow as fast as everything else in Dubai. If contemporary art is the new gold, art fairs the souks and bazaars of old, and Dubai – less mineral-rich than its neighbours but all the cannier for it – still the powerful entrepot and free trading post it has been since long before the oil came, then I think we can be sure of seeing it as a large commercial centre for international art” — The Financial Times
