DUBAI ART SEASON

Introduction | Dubai Art Season

8

Dubai Art Season, launched by Dubai Culture and Arts Authority in 2014, celebrates the Emirate’s growing creative landscape. As the umbrella arts initiative of the city, Dubai Art Season rolls out a rich calendar of city-wide activations in public spaces including interactive installations, workshops, exhibitions and live performances and panel discussions. Dubai Art Season begins with the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature and continues through to Art Week featuring more than 350 events, including SIKKA Art Fair, Art Dubai, Design Days Dubai, the Global Art Forum, as well as Art Nights at Gate Village, Alserkal Avenue’s Programmes and the Galleries Night. The 2017 Dubai Art Season will host the Dubai International Calligraphy Exhibition (DICE), a bi-annual initiative that celebrates the art of calligraphy through an exhibition and workshops. The two-month Dubai Art Season is a definitive initiative that aims to highlight the city’s global credentials in the arts scene and brings together artists from around the world for an unmatched celebration of talent, creativity, innovation and cultural diversity.

Introduction | Art Week

ART WEEK

Art Week, initiated by Art Dubai Group and supported by Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) and Meraas is the region’s largest cultural festival taking place each March. Concurrent events occurring between 12 - 18 March 2017 span from a seminal exhibition of Picasso and Giacometti in Qatar to the 13th edition of the Sharjah Biennial, with a flurry of cultural activities in institutions, universities, commercial galleries, hotels and outdoor public spaces across the key cities of Abu Dhabi, Doha, Dubai and Sharjah. The 11th edition of Art Dubai is the week’s anchor event, taking place as always at the Madinat Jumeirah. The 6th edition of Design Days Dubai moves to a new location in Dubai Design District (d3), highlighting the rise of d3 as a new destination where dozens of exciting new concepts have opened in recent months. Following its recent expansion, Alserkal Avenue is now home to over 70 creative spaces and this Art Week sees the launch of its multipurpose events space Concrete and several pop-up events such as the region’s first art book fair. Performance art is the focus of the Art Dubai commissioned projects and is explored in The Creative Act, the second exhibition of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi collection. The role of public art across a city is highlighted by several artists and through projects such as Dubal Walls at City Walk. A noteworthy number of exhibitions investigate the recent history of art production in the UAE, particularly pertinent since the passing away of Hassan Sharif in 2016.

MERAAS

Introduction | Meraas

Meraas has left a permanent impression on Dubai through unique destinations that are reshaping the urban landscape. Our vision is to establish a world of experiences that allow people to dedicate more time to their passions, while developing a much deeper connection to their community and surroundings. To achieve this, we’re creating dynamic open places for people to socialise, explore, play, and enjoy the very best the city has to offer – together. This approach has enabled our investments and operations to grow to include a diverse mix of specialisms, from food, fun, and travel, to health, tech, and education. Our destinations CITY WALK, THE BEACH, BOXPARK, Last Exit, and The Outlet Village have become central to Dubai’s aim of becoming the world’s happiest city. By making places for people to meet we’re also contributing to Dubai Plan 2021 and a strategic initiative to attract 20 million visitors Dubai by 2020. As we continue to reimagine what it means to live, work, and play in a modern urban environment, we are focused on bringing one-of-a-kind experiences like The Green Planet to life. Each of these activities is intended to add colour to the city, enrich our society, and inspire our people to become more creative. Furthermore, our focus remains on areas that will have the biggest impact on how people experience Dubai. As the catalyst of new and innovative ideas in a fast-paced environment, we believe it’s important to reflect the vibrancy, diversity, and rich heritage of the city, and design for participation in what we do. This is because we believe cities are better when the communities that interact with them are actively involved in determining how they look and feel. Such participation is essential in our pursuit of a globally competitive knowledge economy and has the potential to shape life in Dubai for generations to come.

LOCO’MOTION DUBAI AND ANIMATION CHAMBER CINEMA COURTYARD

THE BAHRAIN HOUSE Too Far Co. is an arts consultancy that recruits talent from the MENA region and the Global South in the form of artists, photographers and makers. It has participated in UK, Qatar and Bahrain. For Sikka 2017, it showcases the work of 5 Bahraini artists alongside a talk about the local Bahraini community and the inspiration that comes from the natural springs. The artwork will be displayed in a special house in Al Fahidi called The Bahrain House: a space that will indulge the visitors in the islands’ atmosphere.

where people are most productive and creative, leading them to flourish and be better members of society. The space in one of Al Fahidi’s courtyards become a platform for gathering a community of individuals to discover the many ways it is possible to achieve or maintain one’s happiness and de-stress amidst city life. Through music, painting, writing and relaxing gong meditation sessions, stepping into The Happiness Space is like stepping into a haven of discovery and learning.

THE HAPPINESS COURTYARD

STREET ART HOUSE

LOCO’MOTION Community Cinema and The Animation Chamber join forces, selecting an array of cultural films. The programme includes documentaries, shorts, features and animations from across the globe to enlighten the mind and whirl the imagination.

Bringing street culture to life, the fair gathers 20-25 talents including groups/collectives across the UAE – building on a community platform and expanding the reach of the genre of ‘street art’. Each room will be filled with art exhibitions, music performances such as DJs and acoustic setups, urban street wear and installations.

RASHID AL MULLA + CONNEXUS, UAE & BRAZIL

THE CONNECTION MAZE BY STREET ARTIST TARSILA SCHUBERT

In an exclusive collaboration, Emirati artist Rashid Al Mulla invites the Brazilian duo Connexus to come to the Middle East to paint a wall. The three artists will be together for the week and explore the city and its surroundings. Based on these conversations, they will investigate their own human condition and reflect about how close we can be to each other, beyond borders. The final challenge will be to try to answer the universal question: what makes us all happy? The 3 artists will develop a site-specific artwork during SIKKA Art Fair.

Tarsila believes the best way to engage visitors to SIKKA is through art by drawing the audience physically into the artwork. A series of figures painted on the walls of one of the main Fahidi alleys tell the story of ordinary moments in life such as drinking tea, bargaining for goods, smoking shisha, which share an emphasis on identity. At the end of the exhibition the audience can display their own Polaroids and the artist will paint over it, proving that yesterday like today, human relationships are the focal point of the UAE culture.

An enchanting world of sugarcoated sensations and discoveries through a multisensory experience for kids and adults. 27

I started photography due to an unconscious urge to document the events happening around me, leading naturally to archiving, documenting and preserving my surroundings for future generations. Commissions and residencies are very important for artists to ensure that being an artist is a sustainable livelihood for them, so they can continue to make art. Secondly some commissions give artists the freedom to express their ideas in an uncontrolled environment. Art Week is a very good opportunity to meet different people from around the world and build connections with artists, curators or even different international institutions. p38, 136

Dragon Mart is an incredible place for so many reasons - it’s a sprawling mall complex on the side of the OmanHatta highway, next to the housing development aptly titled International City. I go there often for homewares - their carpeting and curtains are wellpriced. It sells everything you could possibly want (except, as I learned while shooting there this December, batteries). If your shoes start to hurt you, you can stop and buy a pair of onFARAH AL QASIMI trend fuzzy sandals. There’s popcorn Alserkal Programming & Global Art and smoothies along the way. What’s Forum commissioned artist most notable to me are the furniture shops which sell Chinese-made simulacra of Emirati-style furniture. Their displays are stunning and very ornate. p40,101

ARCHIVING

MEMORY EL SEED

Calligraffiti artist

I remember when Munira Al Sayegh and I shared our thoughts in Venice while we were both interning for the National UAE Pavilion in 2013. Now she is curating Bayn: The InBetween; we reflect on our talks as we move closer to the opening. I met Daphne Taranto, Fully Booked (PGX) co-director in Baltimore at MICA where I was doing my MFA. She was a Fulbright finalist to conduct arts research in Dubai; she came to our first Baltimore Eid gathering. We build communities as we transition, and if we are lucky, they grow. p18, 42, 175

I enjoy welcoming people into my workspace so they can understand my process more deeply. I find it funny people think they need to speak in low voices, for me an artist studio is a busy, lively environment. Dubai is a complicated place for my public art as there are windows on nearly every façade, which is why The Green Planet commission at City Walk was the perfect wall for me. It has been personal initiatives that have made the past five years in the UAE an exciting period of growth. When you feel you are part of something you grow with people as well as a place, you inspire and you get inspired. We need to encourage regional talents more and remember that community and communicating is everything. p56

ALSERKAL AVENUE

13 March 2017, 18:00-22:00 (see individual listings for specific events)

ABOUT Alserkal Avenue is the region’s foremost arts and culture neighbourhood. Located in Al Quoz, an industrial area in Dubai, it was established in 2007 and has grown to become an essential platform for the development of homegrown artistic and cultural initiatives, supporting a vibrant community of contemporary art galleries and alternative art spaces, together with design, media and industrial studios.

Alserkal Programming is a platform for exhibitions, public art commissions, performances, films, talks and workshops that critically and creatively investigate themes pertinent to the region’s arts community. The annual programme is thematically developed to focus on a particular issue, bringing artists and professionals from different fields together to examine a concept through wide-ranging means and perspectives. The selection of artists for 2017 focuses on local talent and the theme of work. Each of the artists will produce work that is inspired by the physical, social and cultural framework of Alserkal Avenue and its surrounding industrial neighborhood of Al Quoz in Dubai.

An Artist Residency launches in March 2017, further enhancing the organisation’s breadth and scope.

SUDARSHAN SHETTY

AHMED MATER

FULLY BOOKED, IN COLLABORATION WITH CROSSWAY FOUNDATION

Sudarshan Shetty presents Shoonya Ghar, a new film that continues his exploration of the cycles of life and death and investigates the symbolism and theatricality inherent in ritual. A maquette of the sculpture that was exhibited at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Delhi and Biennale of Sydney will be displayed. Shoonya Ghar translates as ‘empty is this house’, referencing a 12th century poem by Gorakhnath, a guru associated with the traditions of Nirgun poetry and ideas of emptiness, formlessness and the void.

Ahmed Mater will launch his book, Desert of Pharan: Unofficial Histories of The Mass Expansion of Mecca, published by Lars Müller Publishing. The launch will be accompanied by an exhibition curated by ATHR, a contemporary art platform in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Ahmed Mater charts the city’s origins to its more recent history. It is a study of the site’s recent transformation: Mecca, until recently, embodied as a unique urban tapestry, layered with histories that are stitched together by an abundance of organically rooted communities and cultures.

Carbon 12 presents Sara Rahbar’s fourth solo show in Dubai. Sara Rahbar is an artist who embraces activism and uncomfortable subject matter, working to expand the individual acts of violence she has experienced into universal ones, to amplify the sufferings of humanity through her chosen materials. These sculptures combine heavy materials – the heft of the soul, perhaps – with intensely precarious arrangements that cause us to feel not optimism, but rather pressure, discomfort, and vulnerability.

ABOUT: CHI-KA is a kimono shop and art space, working with artists and organisations reflecting on the new wave of Japanese aesthetic. The space was designed by Takeshi Murayama and Manabu Ozawa.

Every culture has its own sense of colour and Japan is no exception. From prehistoric times to the present day the Japanese have developed their own collection of traditional colours, known as dentouiro, which are still recognised and used today. Their use in textiles such as the kimono is one of the most notable. Colours displayed in kimono are not random: Purple, for example, is a metaphor for undying love, the imagery deriving from the fact that gromwell (murasaki), the plant used to create the dye, has very long roots. The exhibition Colour Code #Kimono dives deep into the depths of these delicate colours,

Collaborating with a variety of institutions, infrastructures, and communities, Vikram Divecha has realised a series of major ambitiously scaled and publically sited projects across the United Arab Emirates over the last few years. Engaging with what he terms ‘found processes’, Divecha identifies hidden seams within pre-existing systems of urban life, creating interventions and installations that, if only temporarily, disrupt the status quo, bringing their otherwise invisible structures and operations into plain view. Starting in the late 1980’s in Homs, Syria the gallery opened in Dubai in 1995 with a programme focused on Arab Modernism. Green Art Gallery relaunched in 2010 as a contemporary art space featuring a multi-generational mix of artists whose practices are researched, idea-led, and representative of our current moment.

Green Art Gallery presents a solo exhibition of site-specific work by Hera Büyüktasçıyan, using the lens of aquamorphology to explore the infinite facets and shards of memory, historicity and time. Much of Büyüktasçıyan’s work is defined by an architectural and anthropological approach: she often favours site-specific installations, examining the way in which virtual spaces operate in relation to the physical, and how fragments of time and memory can be unearthed, restructured and woven together to bring to life a forgotten aspect of time and history. Lala Rukh’s first solo exhibition in Dubai entitled sagar is comprised of a collection of enigmatic photographs of the sea that make her meditations on the nature of time and transience palpable. Lala uses her lens as an undistracted viewer who sees both time and immutability joined in the invisible arch on which life is suspended. In their evocation of tidal movements these works touch up the philosophical question of being and nothingness, creating a poetic portrayal of the ebb and flow that is life.

INSIDE THE FIRE CIRCLE

PRESENT ELSEWHERE

Mounir Fatmi , Crossing the Line 1, 2015

Lawrie Shabibi presents Inside the Fire Circle, Mounir Fatmi’s first solo exhibition in Dubai. The exhibition expands on the artist’s interest in the circle, its form and symbolic meaning throughout history. Fatmi examines the life of John Howard Griffin (1920 –1980), an American activist, journalist and author from Texas, who wrote about racial equality and was known for his fight against racial discrimination during the Civil Rights Movement. These two seemingly opposing themes connect through Fatmi’s interest in the idea of repetition, erasure, movement and the tendency of history to repeat itself.

A limited edition wrapper has been crafted for the Mirzam submission to Tashkeel’s Mind the Gap exhibition, p164. Somewhere between the invention of industrial chocolate making machinery and ancient Aztec stone grinding lies the craft chocolate making movement.

CHOCOLATE & TRADE: AN ART DUBAI COLLABORATION What does taste trade like? Art Dubai and Mirzam reflect on global trade through a limited edition chocolate recipe, with a wrapper designed by Fikra Designs to accompany Global Art Forum 11, p98. The story of Mirzam, inspired by the Spice Route and Caravan trading paths, as well as celestial navigation, is closely tied with global trade movements, in particular that of cocoa, a listed commodity. The new recipe features an ingredient traded very commonly from Dubai to the rest of the world. In fact, while it doesn’t grow in the Emirates, Dubai is the world’s biggest exporter of this delicate and aromatic plant. Can you guess what it is? Bars only available from the Mirzam space throughout March 2017.

MYRNA AYAD

Fair Director, Art Dubai

GLOBAL

I’d like visitors to walk away from Art Dubai having learnt something new. There are plenty of opportunities to discover artists: out of our 94 galleries coming from 43 countries, several are coming for the first time, from as far afield as Algeria, Norway and Peru. Particularly memorable might be an ‘interruption’ in the halls by performances, a multi-sensory experience through Atfal Ahdath’s take on The Room or listening to an inspiring conversation at the Global Art Forum. This year sees our inaugural symposium accompanying Art Dubai Modern and a tribute exhibition to the late, great, Hassan Sharif. The fair’s diverse community programming brings so much rich content to Art Week, helping to keep artists, curators, students and professionals all busy and inspired.

PABLO DEL VAL

MODERN

International Director, Art Dubai

Leave prior judgements at home and arrive at the fair with an enquiring eye and open mind. Ask questions, make connections and actively engage with the art you are looking at, especially the works that speak to you. An art fair is a unique opportunity to have one-on-one conversations with galleries and see vastly different artworks in the same space. This year sees a number of hybrid artworks on display that break boundaries between standard definitions of media, is it a painting, a sculpture, a video? Why is it moving? Why is it changing colour? Viewing art should be a surprising and dynamic experience. Contemporary artists are discussing issues we are all dealing with in our daily lives so our relationship with it should be closer – don’t be afraid and embrace the experience.

PERFORMANCE

It’s the right time to have a dedicated focus on performance art at the fair. There are no rules but risks to take. Performances tackle the idea of repetition: from rehearsal, to looping, to reenactment and the status of the archive. I am pursuing the idea of interrupting, diverting and disturbing the audience, turning them into the exhibited artwork. I believe this is something performance art and gestures do best. You can witness very genuine and memorable reactions; it is always rewarding to see people surprised, curious and intrigued by the art form. p88

ATFAL AHDATH

Commissioned artists for The Room, Art Dubai Projects The Room commission is a playground for artists outside the context of the exhibition space. In that sense it is quite a unique and liberating experience. Working as a collective involves a lot of fighting. We do not vote; we have to agree. Creatively this is invigorating as it forces us to be sharp and radical with our decisions. Most of our work is built on experimentation, chance, and also mistakes. Whether its in gastronomy, video or installation, we approach it with a mix of obsessive fascination and reckless mischievousness. You can expect at least one mythical creature to be on the menu. p88

COMMISSIONS

RANA BEGUM

Winning artist, Abraaj Group Art Prize 2017 When viewers walk around the installation, they experience the ever-changing reflections on the glass panels. The movement of natural light throughout the day, the only contingent element in the work, activates the composition and unites the whole piece. My practice draws inspiration from both the vibrancy and chaos of urban landscapes like Dubai and the distilled repetition of geometric patterns, which abound in traditional Islamic art and architecture. The work stems from my interest in the interplay between light and colour, specifically how overlapping, transparent coloured planes interact and create a third layer of colour and geometry. Winning the prize has allowed me to see the concept come to life at a much larger scale and make my last few years of research come together. p86

ARTIST

OMAR BERRADA

Curator, Abraaj Group Art Prize 2017 As a curator, you might think of artists’ countries or regions of origin when considering large group shows or in the context of reflecting on geopolitical imbalances in the art world for instance. But when you are working with an artist on a project, only the one-on-one relationship counts, irrespective of where the artist is from.

CURATOR

I have really thought of the AGAP exhibition as a group show, so I can’t wait to see the works come together and interact in the exhibition space. I am also very excited for the four artists to finally meet, after each of them heard me speak about the three others for several months! p86 85

THE ROOM The Room is an immersive, large-scale interactive installation that takes place at the Fair each year. The series unfolds in two interconnected rooms in the Mina a’Salam Hotel, and incorporates artist collaborations, gastronomy and performance. Atfal Ahdath the Beirut based art collective consisting of Vartan Avakian, Hatem Imam and Raed Yassin will be presenting Cooking Liberty, a visual and gastronomic happening.

Taking cues from Dali’s book, and his oeuvre in general and with the use of exaggeration and repetition, Atfal Ahdath present the guests with edible dreams in an immersive setting reminiscent of a grandiose banquet. Recipes of famous dishes will be structurally and molecularly reconstituted to create contradictory gustative sensations where the intensely sensorial experience flirts with familiarity and expectation. The menu includes exquisite dishes as well as sonic, olfactory and visual courses.

TRADING PLACES

Approximately 1.6 million people experience our airports every week: they are a window on Dubai. Connecting passengers experience a fleeting but impactful glimpse of the spirit of innovation and Arabian hospitality for which Dubai is worldrenowned. For those visiting our great Emirate, we set the tone and make that all-important first impression. It is a tremendous responsibility and one we take seriously. Every day we strive to find novel ways to improve passenger experience, matching optimised processes and technology while, ideally, adding in a dash of Dubai-style flair. p100

GLOBAL ART FORUM 11 TRADING PLACES

January 13-14, 2017 Dubai/Sharjah March 15-17, 2017 Dubai “Trade is at the heart of humankind. Trade connects people to one another in a myriad of ways, seen and unseen. Trade can fuel civilizations and empires. It can dictate time itself. The end of trade turns somewhere suddenly into nowhere.”

Commissioner, Global Art Forum 11 You think of trade, and maybe you think of economics and trade deals and exchange rates. But there’s so much more, culturally, intellectually, creatively. We build up new maps of knowledge by bringing art adjacent to history, anthropology, science, music. Secondly, we have an expanded approach to geography that starts with our location, in Dubai, and then keeps zooming out, to the Gulf, the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia, and so on, equally looking for ways in which places are thought of through their connections rather than their differences. Dubai and the UAE have been historic trade hubs for centuries if not way longer. Trade

Convening the most compelling minds from the fields of art, history, economics, philosophy, urbanism, literature and more, to tell untold histories and stories on the trade of goods and ideas that shape – and reshape – the world.

has been at the heart of societies, from pearls to oil to shipping logistics and the region’s largest stock exchange. This is reflected in the diversity of food, cinema, hair grooming, architecture. Trade may have brought people here, but, once here, those same people give rise to a cornucopia of cultures that become entirely its own thing.

Art Dubai partners with the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), and Dubai Design District (d3) to present the Forum.

Trading Places will explore the relationship between the economy of goods and ideas that constantly shape who and where we are. From ancient ports to the “New Silk Road” to algorithmic financial markets, the infrastructure of trade is also a geography of imagination and invention. It is also the foundation upon which Dubai and sibling Gulf cities have forged their pasts and their futures, from pearls to airports.

COMMISSIONER Shumon Basar has overseen the creative direction of the Global Art Forum since 2011, becoming Commissioner in 2013. He is a writer, whose last book was The Age of Earthquakes: A Guide to the Extreme Present, co-authored with Douglas Coupland and Hans Ulrich

Dubai is developing into an extraordinary hub for design, both planned and organic. Activities in March spawn massive efforts by the local community and bring together creatives from across the MENASA region. The combined efforts by designers, curators and organisers are very evident. Design is all around us. A newcomer to the field of design should visit Design Days Dubai because the condensed platform helps focus the eye and understand more what makes good design. It hones the very essence of design. Dubai is becoming a focal point for design and designers. As designers we constantly innovate, disrupt and look at things from different perspectives. Whatever we make, we constantly modify, enhance, adjust, change, adapt, and refine in order to find better alternative solutions to common issues. We play a huge role in the way individuals experience everyday objects, places and brands. As an educator, my job is to promote design as a way of thinking, and the best way to learn about anything is by participation. During Art Week it is important to join workshops, attend talks, visit open studios and get inspired.

This was the kind of creative energy we wanted to be surrounded with. There are obvious parallels between being a chef and a designer and both food and design speak the same language. You can’t separate one from the other and why should you? DIFC ART NIGHTS AT GATE VILLAGE Tony Cragg, Wild Relatives, 2013

NEDAA ELIAS

Pursuit of Abjad With the spread of Islam, many languages adopted the Arabic script as a primary writing system. In order to represent phonemes that Arabic does not cover, adaptation led to the additions of hundreds of new letter designs. In the past century, many of these languages replaced the Arabic with Latin, Cyrillic or Hindi scripts.

of languages that abandoned Arabic script will be broken and displayed on the floor. Gaps between the abandoned letters reflects a contrast between the installation façade and the inner body, representing a combination of modernity and traditional culture.

MICHELA POMARO Market Day

An artist from Milan, Michela Pomaro’s work focuses on the relationship between light and colour. Her life-size fruit stall, handcrafted in Italy, seems to accurately recall the shapes and colours of the stalls from a happy, bygone era. But suddenly the perception begins to change, tricked by Pomaro’s intelligent use of colours and lights. The tiny sculptures created

in synthetic ceramic and varnished resins that could be apricots, cherries, passion fruits or lychees, transcending time and culture, become abstract, polyhedric shapes. The use of fluorescent sprays and neon lights makes these shapes start then to fade and alternate between pure dashes of colour, turning the space into a joyful, psychedelic night market. Afshin Pirhashemi’s latest solo exhibition imagines today’s migration crisis as a series of vignettes that form an epic story of freedom, desire and determination. Using allegory as a means of describing this difficult reality, several new large-scale works depict a group of bold women who must navigate a war-torn terrain in order to build new lives in far off lands. Universal symbols of freedom such as the Statue of Liberty stand in stark contrast to a pack of wolves that lingers in the distance as Pirhashemi’s bold heroines seek to determine their own fate.

Ammar Al Attar

CUADRO FINE ART GALLERY

Aidan Salakhova’s work plays on the capability of representative imagery to represent a multitude of meanings, primarily the position of women within established social conventions. Her symbols are far from mundane. The minaret is a recurring image: representing faith, power and unity given its function as the location of the call to prayer. Ammar Al Attar’s work tells a story employing the medium of photography. He deconstructs the images we see via the media of Muslims praying, dismantling digital images to an analogue form, achieving a pixilated effect. 136

Hassan Sharif was a man of extraordinary talent, intelligence and irony. Honesty is one of the most important teachings that I hope the younger generation of artists could learn from him, the importance of staying true to one’s vision and position, without compromising.

LEGACY

This Art Week several exhibitions explore and reflect on the origins of conceptual art in the UAE and the gap between generations. I hope they engage the audience in a conversation that will lead to further investigation and research. p91, 157

SHAIKHA AL MAZROU Artist

Public Art constructs a space for public dialogue. Bringing art into public spaces beyond the gallery walls and making art interventions accessible to the public encourages community outreach, education and interaction: visitors are not merely passive viewers. It can promote a cultural identity and is important in the formation of a new city as it encourages a transfer of knowledge, public engagement and participation. However, it is important to note the complexity and the multifaceted dimensions of public art in a city that constantly changes its landscape, making the importance and impact of public art ephemeral and temporary. p157, 180, 191

URBAN

The contemporary photography exhibition curated by Shaima Al Tamimi will bring together a collection of photographs captured as part of the #RoveAroundDeira cultural photo-walk. The event took place in February and was attended by Dubai residents keen on photography and cultural exploration. Hidden gems of old Dubai and the Port Saeed / Deira areas were explored including the fish market, Al Ras, food stalls, the creek and the traditional spice and gold souks. The first and oldest Dubai port was also captured from a secret rooftop location offering a bird’s eye view of the bustling trading activity below.

THE CHALLENGE

Cities Design, Art and Lifestyle Boutique presents the UAE debut of emerging pop artists E$COBAR and Van Donna. E$COBAR’s creations offer a mix of political and pop imagery while taking a thought-provoking stance toward money-oriented Western culture. Many of his artworks provide ironic takes on current topics or striking visual juxtapositions of contrasting, yet interlaced, elements. Mixing pointillism and pop art in a unique colourful blend, Van Donna is known for experimenting with different techniques, her inspiring and welcoming, offering an immediate emotional connection for the viewer.

Reflections is a solo exhibition from the Syrian artist Besher Koshaji. In his most recent collection of works, Besher’s subject matter has shifted from landscape to faces of his lost past, faces of his influencers and lovers. He contrasts his carefully constructed layering with serene solid planes to bring focus as to why he distorts his figures. The artist explains that it is an attempt to rebuild what has fallen of Syria and to bring back to his sad memories some light and happiness, by placing vivid colours of hope amidst his confusion and despair.

Aiming to identify the spirit of experimentation that was present in the genesis of UAE avant-garde contemporary art practice, Is Old Gold? indirectly questions if, how and why this narrative has been aborted, lost or evolved and if it can or should be recovered in the current context. Two artists from a younger generation of Emirati artists were assigned to work separately on a character from the 5 UAE. OPEN CALL

What’s unique about the art community here is that we all feel connected by our passion, dreams and hope for art in the UAE. Each one of us has a different goal; yet we all feel united by our love for the freedom of expression that art provides. Medaf in Arabic means the rower of the boat. We chose this name for our new community space because it can be the tool to assist children and young adults to push forward and learn new skills. Usually Art Week is concentrated on one side of Dubai but through Medaf Studio we will enable people who live in Mirdiff, Khawaneej and Nad Al Hamar to experience its energy. p161

Mind the Gap is a culmination of different drivers all coming together. For me there are many gaps. They are all around us and we often talk about them but do little to try and bridge them. How can you visualise the intervals between technology and craft, old and young, past and future and mind and matter and what would these look like? By taking a pause and observing spaces we asked makers to attempt to enhance the historical, social and cultural fabric of the UAE. p164

Community plays a crucial role in the development of every artist. They learn from their peers and rely on an exchange of ideas. The circumstances of being an artist in the UAE have changed dramatically in the last 30 years. I believe that art communicates on its own terms, separate from what the artist intends. The curator must be able to distinguish between the two perspectives. However, the artist interview can initiate a curator’s most profound engagement with an artist and their work. It enables the curator to trace the many influences on an artist and to better position their work in a larger art historical context. p172

One of the most defining aspects of the curatorial vision for the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi’s collection is the aim to offer multiple perspectives, telling distinctive stories introducing the public to artists and histories that may be unfamiliar, while identifying points of interconnection and transcultural exchange and transgenerational influence. The Creative Act exhibition will focus on the related themes of performance, process, and presence, underlining an overarching concept seen in the measures taken by artists to fulfil their artistic pursuit. It will not only display works, but will allow people to experience the artists’ creative trail of thought, and present the extents they reached to achieve and procreate their ideas into physical form. p170

COMMUNITY

For things to flourish, they need to be in the correct surroundings. In the case of artists a sense of community creates an ecosystem of give and take. Having a community can allow for a sense of mentorship and guidance from one generation to the next. Art is usually created as a response to something - art being produced in the UAE is a narration of the present time, a collection of visual reactions and responses. Contemporary art production is defined by the present moment but shaped by a reflection of recent history and a promise for the future. A sense of fluidity, fluctuation, change and transformation are anchoring themes in the exhibition Bayn: The In-Between. p175

DR. MICHELE BAMBLING Creative Director Lest We Forget

In 2011 when I asked Zayed University students to explore their family photography albums together, I anticipated they would make important, farreaching discoveries about Emirati identity and vernacular history. Through the intimacy of their forbearers’ photographs, they witnessed and identified with momentous changes in daily life spurred by modernity and the establishment of the UAE. Recognition of this pivotal position between traditional and contemporary life is one of the defining aspects of Emirati identity today. In Lest We Forget publications and exhibitions these observations and responses are articulated through the universal language of art. p174

BUT WE CANNOT SEE THEM: TRACING A UAE ART COMMUNITY, 1988-2008

The spring exhibition at the NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery surveys one of the most important artistic communities in this country’s history. Community has played a key role in every modern art historical breakthrough, with artists banding together around manifestos or turning to one another for support when art institutions rejected their innovations. Art communities grow out of critical and creative exchange among peers and mentors. But We Cannot See Them focuses on one community of artists, 172

sometimes called ‘the five’, at an intersection of visual artists, writers, and filmmakers based in the UAE. Its members identified with a new culture of encouraging radical, formal and conceptual experimentation. Eventually, some of these artists founded the celebrated Flying House. But We Cannot See Them is curated by Maya Allison, with Exhibitions Curator Bana Kattan, with research and program development by Programs Curator Alaa Edris. ARTISTS: Hassan Sharif, Mohammed Ahmed Ibrahim,

Abdullah Al Saadi, Mohammed Kazem, Hussain Sharif, Vivek Vilasini, Jos Clevers, and Ebtisam Abdulaziz with contributions from Cristiana De Marchi, Adel Khozam, Nujoom Al Ghanem and Khalid Albudoor. The title of the exhibition is drawn from a poem written by a key member of the community, poet and filmmaker Nujoom Al Ghanem. ABOUT: The NYUAD Art Gallery presents museum-quality exhibitions of art and culture across historical and contemporary topics,

with a special emphasis on subjects of both regional concern and international significance.

WAREHOUSE421

This exhibition presents a rich exploration of Emirati identity as conveyed through modes of adornment. The exhibition explores ‘tangible,’ lasting forms of adornment, including garments, burga, jewelry, weapons and attributes. It also embraces invisible aspects of adornment: the innate knowledge and skills needed to create evanescent adornment through the application of henna,

kohl and fragrance, as well as through grooming and hairstyles. Emirati adornment, in all its complexity and beauty, is revealed through personal examples with insights offered by Emirati people. The highly interactive art exhibition welcomes visitor contribution of objects, memories and reflections pertaining to Emirati adornment. 4 February - 27 August 2017 EVENT INFORMATION Location: Mina Zayed, Abu Dhabi Open: Tuesdays - Sundays, 10:00 - 20:00 warehouse421.ae @warehouse421

LEST WE FORGET – EMIRATI ADORNMENT: TANGIBLE & INTANGIBLE

This exhibition examines the divide between the recent past and the assumed present. It aims to understand the dynamics between the set future, and the captivating narratives of our histories that are often romanticised. Hence, the exhibition title Bayn: The In-Between which looks at that space in between those two prevailing narratives that is often rarely examined. The artists in the exhibition were invited to deconstruct and reconstruct labels, boundaries and assigned identities in order to understand this constant state of transformation. ARTISTS Asma Al Ahmed, Talal Al Ansari, Nasser Alzayani, Sara Al Haddad, Hatem Hatem, Talin Hazbar, Saif Mhaisen, Maytha Al Shamsi, with Special Guest Artist: Manal Al Dowayan.

Curator: Munira Al Sayegh 25 February 2017 - 18 June 2017 ABOUT: Warehouse421 launched in 2015: a cultural space that encourages artistic expressions and supports the perceptive processes, in order to reinforce the UAE’s creative community. Tamawuj – an Arabic word translated as ‘the rising and falling of waves’, ‘a flowing, swelling, surging or fluctuation’ and ‘a wavy, undulating appearance, outline or form’. Sharjah Biennial 13 is a proposition for how we could rethink this infrastructure called the biennial, and whether we can rearrange parts of it to come up with a slightly adjusted whole. Collaborations and friendships are at the heart of what I do. These localities – (Sharjah, Dakar, Istanbul, Ramullah and Beirut) were not selected for some geopolitical qualities, but rather because of certain people working in these cities, with whom I share a common history and a common vision. p182

SADIK KWAISH ALFRAJI Artist, Maraya Art Centre My work is a mixture of deep nostalgia and rich fine details that a spectator might relate to experiences in their own lives and all the questions we face and deal with every day. Sometimes we really need to look at our world and within our memories more than once to see and capture their lost details. Everything in this world is a source of inspiration. The mere existence of it is the greatest inspiration, as well as our own existence within it and the stories it tells, the questions it raises and the beauty with which it wraps its own constant contradictions. p194

SHARJAH ARCHAEOLOGY MUSEUM PETRA, DESERT WONDER

A collaboration between Sharjah Museums Department and the Department of Antiquities in Jordan, the exhibition reflects on the groundbreaking artistic and architectural heritage integral to the civilisation of the ancient city of Petra, Jordan. Ahmed Morsi: A Dialogic Imagination traces the artist’s diverse output from the 1940s up to the present day. Both figurative and fantastical, his paintings evoke his practice as a poet. Writing in the highly acclaimed cultural magazine Al-Khayyal, Samir Gharib, the prominent Egyptian art critic, stated that ‘Ahmed Morsi paints his poetry and writes his paintings.’ He works symbolically to create poetic representations of real events and places that are equally influenced by mythology, imagination and the subconscious. Memory, the passage of time, contemplation, isolation and lyricism are all key elements in his work.

The exhibition is co-curated by Sharjah Art Foundation President and Director Hoor Al Qasimi and Dr. Salah M. Hassan, Goldwin Smith Professor and Director, Institute for Comparative Modernities, Cornell University.

What is considered change? In its simplest forms, change is a shift, a development or a deterioration, a revision, or a redefinition, a transformation, an adjustment, or an evolution. Change is often instigated by curiosity and imagination; starts with an observation, a question; a critical, uncompromising eye. How can we, individuals on different paths, ignite social change? How can we define, or redefine, the coordinates of someone else’s life,
