ARTIST FOCUS STANDS: ARNDT (Singapore/Berlin): presents focus with Belgium artist Wim Delvoye (honoured with a solo exhibition at the Louvre, Paris in 2012) who will show all of his architectural maquettes and some of his stainless steel works in a precious Ottoman Salon specifically produced for Art Dubai 2013. D GALLERIE (Jakarta): MARKER 2012 gallery puts forward a beautiful booth by Kinez Riza, who questions through her photography and sound installation notions of reality and identity in relation to the natural world and lesser known belief systems in tribal societies. The presented series took Riza 339 miles across Borneo with 9 Dayak Lundayeh tribesmen, 2 mercenaries, 2 guides and an assistant. EXHIBIT 320 (New Delhi): first time exhibitors Exhibit 320 present Sachin George Sebastian whose work with paper explores ideas of Metropolis and cityplanners, the germination and corrosion of urban societies. Sebastian’s work builds layer upon layer of cutout paper, employing shadows to undermine the two dimensionality of the medium. They will present Vibha Galhotra’s sculptural work on the Beach. GALERI NON (Istanbul): one of the sharpest rosters in Istanbul proposes work by Extrastruggle and Erdem Ergaz at Art Dubai for the first time. Extrastruggle, a multifaceted project initiated by Memed Erdener in 1997, explores the collective Turkish subconscious, advocating for the country’s social minority groups. Using the straightforward language of graphics

Extrastruggle demonstrates a tumultuous political past and designs logos for communities under social pressure. Erdem Ergaz’s painting explore the adaptation of the human being to the technological era and questions the resistance of faith against supernatural events and war in cold flat colors and a style mimicking scientific diagrams. CAMPAGNE PREMIÈRE (Berlin): One of Art Dubai’s pioneering A.i.R. artists-inresidence, Fayçal Baghriche’s work is characterised by simple gestures that rarely depend on specialist expertise. Drawing on fundamental principals of image rhetoric such as subtraction, inversion, or acceleration, he creates work that questions the organizing factors of human societies. Fayçal Baghriche is an assiduous disrupter of the implicit, habitual signs that form part of our everyday visual vocabulary. GALERIE TANJA WAGNER (Berlin): Though employing different media, for both American-Lebanese and Bosnian artists Annabel Daou and Šejla Kameri personal historic and cultural influences are pervasive in their work; the weight of their themes contrast with their aesthetics and choice of delicate materials. Annabel Daou explores the intersections of language, culture and politics, working primarily on paper. Her writing and markings form conceptual maps. Bosnian artist Šejla Kameri works predominant with film, photography, objects or drawing and has met widespread acclaim for the poignant social commentary of her work. Based on personal experience,

memory and dreams, Kameri’s work takes us to global spaces of displacement and discrimination. LUMEN TRAVO (Amsterdam): Lumen Travo represents their highly international programme through a focus with Nigerian artist Otobong Nkanga and Pakistani Ibrahim Quraishi. Employing various media, drawing, sculptures, installations, performances and photography to process her research material, Nkanga combines autobiographical references in order to create a collage of fragmented narratives. Quraishi seeks to challenge our understanding of visual performativity and its relationship to a broader cultural frame, consciously examining the dynamics of migration, dispossession and cohabitation within the highly rigid socio-political spheres of imagined communities inside the contours of the visual arts context. PARADISE ROW (London): presents focus with Shezad Dawood, acclaimed British Pakistani artist and 2011 winner of the Abraaj Group Art Prize and Adam Broomberg & Oliver Chanarin who interrogate the documentary and ethnographic traditions of photography with critical rigour. SCHLEICHER/LANGE (Berlin): young but stellar gallery is participating in the region for the first time with Kristof Kintera and Timo Nasseri. These artists’ practices are essentially focused on sculpture although approached in such contrasting manners they will make for an exciting juxtaposition.

Timo Nasseri who was recipient of the Abraaj Group Art Prize 2012 meditates on conjured mathematics, while Kintera creates sculpture and installation by combining or altering quotidian objects in unexpected ways. TASHKEEL (Dubai): puts forward Tunisian artist eL Seed who has earned a reputation for his Calligraffiti, combining street art with Arabic calligraphy and Emirati Nasir Nasrallah. eL Seed’s dynamic and contemporary approach has led to a number of major commissions in the region, notably for the Museum of Modern Art in Doha, Qatar. Nasrallah, working in a range of media – including painting, collage and 3-D structures describes his work as “a form of intellectual recycling of industrial, consumerist components”. He was amongst A.i.R. Dubai 2012 artists and is producing new work towards his presentation at Art Dubai. TASVEER (Bangalore): Tasveer proposes to curate a solo exhibition of new photographs from Karen Knorr’s India Song series. These works pay homage to the extraordinary beauty and power of Rajput and Mughal architecture and the hybrid cultures represented in stories that are written and represented in miniature paintings, sculptures found in temples, palaces, havelis and mausoleums, and also folk and tribal art. India song is inspired by the ideas of power that underlie cultural heritage. For Art Dubai 2013, Tasveer proposes to showcase a selection of large scale new works by Knorr, some of which are previously un-exhibited.

MARKER GALLERIES: CARPE DIEM (Ségou): Initially located in Bamako before moving to Ségou and renaming itself in 2010, Carpe Diem has been exhibiting African and international photography and since 2000 and more recently has begun to represent painters and sculptors from the continent. Carpe Diem also hosts a library and cinema, acting as a hub for the growing contemporary art scene in Mali. They will be presenting photographer Harandane Dicko, sculptor Amahiguéré Dolo, painter/installation artist Abdoulaye Konaté –also showing in Sculpture on the Beach—and photographer Adama Kouyaté. CENTRE FOR CONTEMPORARY ART (CCA, Lagos): An independent non-profit making visual art organisation set up in December 2007 to provide a platform for the development, presentation, and discussion of contemporary visual art and culture. It seeks to create new audiences and to prioritise media such as photography, animation, film and video, and performance art, which have been under-represented in Nigeria. CCA, Lagos supports the intellectual and critical development of different art and culture practitioners through talks, seminars, workshops and exhibitions. In addition, it encourages and promotes the professionalisation of production and curatorship in Nigeria and West Africa collaborating with artists, curators, writers, theorists and national and international organisations. CCA will be presenting conceptual artist and photographer Ade Adekola, painter/illustrator Karo Akpokiere, multi-media installation artist Taiye Idahor and sound artist Emeka Ogboh who will also be speaking at the Global Art Forum amongst others. ESPACE DOUAL’ART (Douala): A contemporary art centre and an experimental laboratory based in Douala, Cameroon since 1991, Doual’art invites creative individuals (visual artists, architects,

designers) to reflect upon the city and propose artistic actions on the new urban practices in African cities. They will be presenting work by multi-media artist Em’kal, installation artist Boris Nzebo and painter/sculptor Joseph-Francis Sumégné. NUBUKE FOUNDATION (Accra): A visual and cultural arts foundation founded in 2006 to support and promote high artistic talent in Ghana the foundation hosts exhibitions, exchanges, talks and workshops. Nubuke (meaning, “new dawn”) fosters new genres of artistic expressions and exchanges—especially with other private and state institutions and will be focusing on body of work by painter Ablade Glover. RAW MATERIAL COMPANY (Dakar): Established in Dakar in 2008, Raw Material Company is a centre for art, knowledge and society. It promotes the growth and appreciation of African artistic and intellectual creativity, through exhibitions, commissions, creative residencies and the archiving of theory and criticism. They will be exhibiting seminal artist Soly Cissé, sculptor Henri Sagna in addition to conceptual/ installation artist Kan Si.

SCULPTURE ON THE BEACH: In 2013, Art Dubai launches a new programme, titled Sculpture on the Beach—a curated exhibition of sculptural and large-scale works by 11 artists located on the Mina A’Salam beach, a five-minute walk from the gallery halls and adjacent to the Art Dubai Beach Brasserie. In 2013, the works are selected by curator Chus Martinez, Chief Curator of El Museo del Barrio, formerly Documenta 13’s Head of Department. The works were selected from proposals made by Art Dubai participating galleries; selected artists include: Chris Burden (Galerie Krinzinger, Vienna) Amahiguéré Dolo (Carpe Diem, Ségou) Mounir Fatmi (Lombard Freid Gallery, New York) Bita Fayyazi (Gallery Isabelle van den Eynde, Dubai) Vibha Galhotra (Exhibit 320, New Delhi) Abdoulaye Konaté (commissioned by Iniva, London)* Gabriel Kuri (Sfeir-Semler, Beirut/Hamburg) Hassan Sharif (Alexander Gray Associates, New York) Slavs and Tatars (The Third Line, Dubai) UBIK (Sabrina Amrani Art Gallery, Madrid) Saddek Wasil (Athr Gallery, Jeddah)

*Abdoulaye Konaté’s work was commissioned by Iniva and is exhibited internationally here for the first time, as a project accompanying Marker and Art Dubai 2013’s focus on West Africa
