Letter from the Board Chair and President Dear friends, 2020 was a year like no other. That’s why we’re especially thankful for your friendship and support because your continued generosity ensures an enduring, safe and thriving arts community. Your trust in the stability and expertise of the Arts and Education Council has played a vital role in helping us keep art happening throughout our region in 2020. We are grateful that, because of the support of friends like you, the Arts and Education Council has emerged from 2020 stronger and in a position to keep supporting our arts community through new funding initiatives as well as our diverse and broad funding of more than 70 arts organizations, large and small, that reach 1.6 million children and adults in the bi-state region. During 2020, we served as a vital source of support for our arts community. We were able to fulfill all grant payment commitments in 2020 at full value and keep funding programs active and current. We’ve supported arts organizations that contribute to our vibrant community through innovative arts programs in virtual and in-person environments. We also moved through 2020 with an intense focus to help where needed, launching an Arts and Healing Initiative that awarded funds to organizations to further healing through the arts. We safely re-opened the Centene Center for the Arts for our 20 resident organizations to resume operations and made it possible for all of our resident arts organizations to remain with us. And we responded to the needs of our arts organizations by sharing resources, convening Leadership Roundtables and developing capacity-building programs to help them navigate through this challenging time. We successfully onboarded our 2020 stARTup Creative Competition winner, JeMarco Britton and Soul Shed University who moved into the Centene Center for the Arts in fall 2020 and safely presented his programs since then. Looking ahead, we are transforming the Arts and Education Council by centering community in all that we do — securing the financial resources needed to invest in the people, organizations, programs and ideas that move us toward a more equitable and sustainable creative arts environment. As you read about our impact in 2020, remember that none of this would’ve been possible without your support. Your generosity contributed to arts experiences that kept us connected, entertained and uplifted. Thank you for all you do to keep art happening. With gratitude,

Leonard T. Eschbach

The Arts and Education Council serves diverse communities throughout our region - where you live, work and play. That’s why the Arts and Education Council’s grant programs fund everything from art education programs in a variety of schools to theatre and visual art events for those living in rural communities surrounding St. Louis. The Arts and Education Council understands that our donors are as diverse as the arts themselves, and our wide range of funding approaches reflect the myriad values of our community.

The Arts and Healing Initiative

is the first program of its kind in the Arts and Education Council’s history. In 2019, The Arts and Education Council received funding from the Missouri Foundation for Health to launch a five-year program to improve the quality of life for people throughout St. Louis City and County. In 2020, with additional support from Crawford Taylor Foundation, Missouri Arts Council, Marillac Mission Fund, Graybar and Church on the Rock, 13 organizations were awarded a total of $115,000 in funding to support programs that provide healing through the arts.

Saint Louis Crisis Nursery Healing Hearts provides critical art and expressive play interventions for children between the ages of 3-12 years whose families are facing challenges such as homelessness/transiency, domestic violence, extreme poverty, parental substance abuse, and significant parental health issues. Each participating child will receive their own art supply kit, delivered to their home or shelter and will be led through art and expressive play activities virtually. IMPACT

A partnership between the Sainte Genevieve County Library and the Sainte Genevieve Art Guild resulted in exhibits in the library that included artwork by local artists and shared the history of the arts community in Ste. Genevieve.

The Bayer Fund Rural Community Arts Program

has been essential to providing access to the arts in rural communities across the bi-state region for nearly two decades. In total, the program has provided more than $200,000 in funding to bring artists and entertainers into classrooms and performance venues so that adults and children living in the rural communities surrounding the St. Louis metropolitan area can thrive with greater access to the arts. These grants were extended through 2020-2021 to ensure that arts activities could happen when it was safe for communities to gather.

The Arts and Education Fund for Teachers

provides K-12 teachers in St. Louis area school districts with grants for classroom-based art projects. Since 2010, the Arts and Education Council has provided nearly a quarter of a million dollars for art education across the bi-state region. These grants were extended through 2020-2021 to ensure that arts projects could happen when students returned to schools following remote learning.

stARTup Creative Competition

, a partnership between the Arts and Education Council and PNC Foundation, encourages the development of great artistic ideas that strengthen and enhance the St. Louis arts community. The 2020 competition winner was Soul Shed University.

The Centene Center for the Arts is an incubator owned and operated by the Arts and Education Council that provides arts organizations access, collaboration and essential infrastructure so that they — and the communities they serve — can thrive.

ACCELERATE

Resident organizations have access to rehearsal and performance space, offices, community and collaborative spaces, infrastructure and technology in the center of the Grand Center Arts District at affordable, below-market prices.

2020 Resident Organizations Soul Shed University, founded by JerMarco

Britton, is a 12-month introductory program designed to empower the independent musicians of today with all the necessary tools to begin and sustain a music career. Partnering with St. Louisbased professionals within the music business and a few specialized areas of focus, Soul Shed University takes the concept of a master class and expands it into a full curriculum. Students receive instruction outside the realm of academia and have the opportunity to build and engage in the community with their contemporaries. Soul Shed University offers four areas of study: music performance, music business, music education and wellness. As the 2020 winner, Soul Shed University received $10,000 in prize money, a year of free incubation space in the Arts and Education Council’s Centene Center for the Arts that started October 1, 2020, and access to professional development and mentorship opportunities.

Leadership Roundtables

is a professionally led program targeted to executive directors and CEOs of arts and cultural organizations. The focus is to support executive directors with peer exchanges and resource sharing through peer learning. Research has proven this “peer learning cluster” is a low-cost method of offering training and technical assistance to nonprofits that could not afford the full services of a capacity building consultant. The Arts and Education Council collaborates with The Rome Group to professionally facilitate the roundtables.

Arts Marketers

is a program for arts marketing professionals to discuss shared challenges and provide actionable solutions in a collaborative environment. This group is free and open to any person working in any marketing capacity at arts and nonprofit organizations.
