The personal exhibition “Crepuscolo” stems from the collaboration between Arte Laguna Prize and Anise Gallery, which has selected Matteo Zamagni as the winner of the Special Prize “Artist in Gallery” for the 13th Arte Laguna Prize.
An international network has been built and it is growing and strengthening every edition and every day a system of relationships made by people and ideas is created and it is always looking towards new horizons.
For 13 years Arte Laguna Prize has been promoting contemporary art, creating dissemination channels and an international public participation; it motivates the relationships among people who work in the visual, multimedia and performative arts world; it creates concrete opportunities of growth and of launch of the professional career of artists; it generates special projects which spread from Venice throughout the world, building lots of collaborations with foundations, museums, galleries, art residencies and companies.
With the special prizes “Artist in Gallery” Arte Laguna Prize created a format of collaboration with international galleries that gives them the opportunity to view a large array of artistic proposals selected by an international jury, composed of experts in contemporary art, directors of Museums and Foundations, independent curators and art critics, and then to choose the artist with whom to organize a new exhibition.

Anise Gallery is a contemporary art gallery with a strong focus towards the architectural aesthetic. Working with early to mid-career artists in a wide range of media the gallery presents an exciting and diverse programme of exhibitions, events and talks that relate back to architecture, technology and the built environment. Anise Gallery was founded in 2012 by Jacquelyn Jubert and Joseph Robson in Shad Thames, South East London and it occupies the ground floor of the Anise Building, a former spice warehouse. In a continual effort to expand the gallery experience, a programme of talks and events runs alongside the exhibition programming. Participation in London's main architectural events such as the London Festival of Architecture and Open House London has provided opportunities for further collaboration and a chance to
contribute to the invaluable work of the Architecture in Schools Programme. Crepuscolo by Matteo Zamagni will be Anise Gallery’s inaugural exhibition at its second space in South East London and will signify the launch of their latest gallery and events space. The gallery was immediately struck by Matteo’s work, especially by the video Horror Vacui which encapsulates so many aspects of the gallery ethos. First and foremost it addresses the act of perception and of reality – something the gallery has been questioning through its exhibitions for several years now. The way Matteo approaches the references to hyper-development and the unfolding global crisis is executed with a captivating skill and attention to detail mixed with an impressive understanding of the medium.

BIOGRAPHY Matteo Zamagni (Cesena, 1992) is an Italian born, new media artist and director based in London. He uses technology as a tool to create Immersive and interactive videos, Installations and performances. His works have previously been exhibited at the ICA, The Barbican and Tate Modern.
Crepuscolo marks an important step of my practice, it encapsulates my latest research on ecology and the Anthropocene in combination with computer graphics, forensics and scientific tools.
His research stands between spirituality, art and science to create works that explores themes of consciousness, the body as perceptive interface, the expansive impact of mankind on the ecosystem as well as the recursive relation of natural phenomena spanning across the observable world.
ARTIST STATEMENT With Crepuscolo I wanted to create an environment in which people can observe the relationship between human and the environment, its repercussions and interdependency, a fine balance in a state of uncertainty. The exhibition represents my obsession with man-made industrial structures and architecture of density, the analytical, objective observation of nature, and the tension between hyper development and ecological destabilization in relation to the disconnect between our species and the natural environment.

CURATORIAL STATEMENT Anise Gallery
Set in the context of the current ongoing climate crisis, ‘Crepuscolo’ explores the relationship between human hyperdevelopment and geological growth. In his first solo exhibition in the UK, Matteo Zamagni presents a body of work that critiques materialistic practices. Crepuscolo focuses on the role of human activity in re-purposing and removing Earth’s resources, and in doing so disrupting world balance. Zamagni’s kaleidoscopic visions of unnatural worlds of excess, in a state of instability, bear the weight of impending ecological disasters. The short film ‘Horror Vacui’ (2018) — originally commissioned by the ICA London and Channel 4 Random Acts — will be shown alongside a new series of prints and an exclusive video screening. Meaning ‘fear of empty space’, the film’s title refers to the art historical practice of filling the entirety of a surface or expanse with detail, as well as the Buddhist concept of emptiness. This practice — the materialisation of the human fear of nothingness and its irresolution — creates a tension which makes Zamagni’s works both intensive and immersive. This approach will be extended and presented in a new and daring installation, launching Anise Gallery’s second exhibition space in South East London.
