Jules Renard
In 2019 we have reached the edition number 13 of Arte Laguna Prize. If we were in an Anglo-Saxon country, to avoid negative energies, we would call it the edition 12 + 1 but, in spite of popular beliefs, we worked hard to complete this edition as well as possible. Thirteen editions are an important milestone and our commitment is to look for something new every especially, from our mistakes.

Inevitably, the Prize has become a unique and unrepeatable opportunity to take the pulse of an art the more traditional circuits, employing unusual languages or in countries where artistic production is obstructed by complex social, economic and cultural realities.

Arte Laguna Prize is not only the most comprehensive prize of its kind, encompassing a wide range of media, artistic practices and methods. It also has a personal and social dimension. Reading the comments and the notes of the artists that applied to the prize, we can notice the recurrence of some key words in contemporary painting, such as representation and abstraction, space and time. Some paintings are explained as appearances from the past or metaphors of the present; others testify the great interest in the representation of places, be they glimpses of cities, or liquid landscapes that melt into soft, evanescent textures or minutely depicted interiors. Therefore, relationship between painting and reality, a pressing need for confrontation that characterized also the choices made by the jury. After all, the relationship with reality is still the fulcrum around which

We would like to outline with even greater constancy this vulnerability of the institutional spaces. Actually, we would like to show this vulnerability by hosting an increasing number of live works and by dealing with the short-circuits they create because, at the end, the performing arts are a time of sharing, a moment in which a group of people gathers.

was no easy task. The Photography section contained both images in very traditional analogue processes – including works made using an improvised pinhole camera – and pictures made with highly sophisticated digital equipment. The Digital Graphics section was interpreted equally widely with works ranging from straightforward illustration to deep abstraction, from painterly to geometric. The profound technological and social evolutions in the last years have led to the feeling that we are in danger of being inundated by images. However the overall standard of the entries was encouragingly high. The works that made the deepest impression on me were those that combined a high degree of technical ability, producing images that revealed an equally high degree of humanity. The long

Or should the geographical diversity of their provenance be a factor to consider, or the generation to which an artist belongs? a partial response to the need to think about works that are to be shown in a group exhibition context. As well as the interest they may provoke in their own right, they must also work in the space that is to house them. At the same time, they must generate a coherent, evocative and intelligible dynamic when they are brought together as a set, but without compromising the autonomy and impact of the individual pieces. It is remarkable that in both these sections, despite the sophisticated technologies available to artists, the works resort to very economical means, invoking the individual body and its and now.

Being part of a jury is always a challenge. A challenge because one must evaluate artworks that deal with distinct and distant expressive languages. The particularity of the Prize is precisely the variety of places from which the artists come, but above all the multidisciplinary nature of the submitted works. Indeed, some of them cannot be considered photographs, in the narrow sense of the word. A challenge because we must always try to evaluate the works very accurately and with respect for the artists who submit them. Behind a work there is always a deep insight, a great work both in terms of time and energy spent. But mostly, there is behind an attempt to express themselves and communicate with the others. At the same time, however, being a juror also represents a possibility of self-growth. There

The renewed interest of institutions, foundations and brands for the public and commercial use of the artistic means as a product has led to the creation of thousands of new works in urban spaces. Nowadays, urban art is more the result of those who commission it than those who produce it. At the same time, many artists continue to carry out illegal actions, only in some cases even political. This minority, which constitutes a contradiction within the movement, resists to the call of commissions and artistic projects, often embellished by the formula of urban regeneration. The divergence of the techniques used and of the typologies of interventions draws an exact picture of the great energy of the "public" artistic expression in the streets, but also of the impossibility to categorize it, if not in macro areas related to genres and materials. The overall picture is complex, heterogeneous and fragmentary. Starting from this forced decomposition of the urban art universe, we have favored works able of rethinking the existing and of playing with urban spaces, and the ability of the non-decorative urban intervention to relate to the surrounding environment in the most sensitive and spontaneous way.

organization established in 1911 and revived in 2014 to encourage and support innovation, experimentation and potential in the arts. Placing the artist at the core, the Foundation facilitates a programme of dance, music, sound, performance art, theatre and visual arts exhibitions and residencies both in India and internationally. The Jury at Basu Foundation while selecting the artist for the Arte Laguna Prize 2019 found the works of Russian artist Ivan Fedorov most striking unique and outstanding among the rest of the other talented artists. The brushstrokes, the colours, the compositions and the sensitivity of the paintings were extraordinary. Exactly for these reasons we thought that artist Ivan Fedorov will be an appropriate candidate for the residency program of Basu Foundation for the Arts in Kolkata, the City of the forgotten Palaces in India to create some more fascinating works being inspired by local scenery and surroundings from various parts of the City.

ESPRONCEDA Barcelona, Spain
Clara Lotta Dittmer's painting evokes an imaginary and realistic world where colors blend with the reality of life, leaving the viewer the possibility of traveling in a parallel world. Diving into the world of Barcelona with its contrasts, scents, colors, between modernism and modernity led us to the choose the German artist for the residency at Espronceda. We are interested in creating a bridge between the city and the suburbs, between imaginary and invisible places and through the works of Clara Lotta Dittmer it is possible to experiment a multidimensional and multidisciplinary interpretation of space and of everyday life, with an immersion not only in the life of Barcelona but also in the use of material and immaterial space. What interests us is the use of space and how to shape it with artistic language, Clara's painting responds to this need to industrial spaces for a research on space, time, memory, identity, daily life and imaginary.

Jad El Khoury, with the lightness of a gentle breeze, takes upon himself the responsibility to give back to the citizens of Beirut a touch of colour, poetry and beauty. His work becomes a device to push away the bad memories of the war and give a breath of hope in a present and a future of peace and harmony. Nuart prides itself on creating projects and platforms to showcase what is termed “Critical Street Art”, a practice within the broader street art movement that is concerned with raising awareness about the power structures at play in public life and space. We’re here to support the disorganised and unregulated rhythms and movement of the streets, to challenge the regulations of the institutions and the growing privatisation of not only public space, but also mental space. In doing so, we hope to act as a counter to the growing forms of spatial exclusion attached to consumerism and the monumentalisation of state funded public art programmes. Jad El Khoury’s sublime work, BURJ EL HAWA (Tower of Wind), is a towering achievement. As the noise of war Western capital and development, a new battle begins. Jad El El Khoury’s work shows, that for this generation of street artists, the streets function as deep repositories of memory and meaning for those who occupy and move through them, a place of contested perceptions and negotiated understanding that anyone can participate in shaping should they have the desire and ambition to so.

Anise Gallery is a contemporary art gallery with a strong focus towards the architectural aesthetic. Working with early to mid career artists in a wide range of media the gallery presents an exciting and diverse programme of exhibitions, events and talks that relate back to architecture, technology and the built environment. Horror Vacui by Matteo Zamagni encapsulates so many aspects of the gallery ethos, we were immediately struck by the imagery, concept and execution of the video. First and foremost it addresses the act of perception and of 'reality' - something the gallery has been questioning through its exhibitions for several years now. By opposing CGI with found footage the video blurs the distinction between reality and a digital recreation of it. The way Matteo approaches the references to hyper – development and the unfolding global crisis is executed with a captivating skill and attention to detail mixed with an impressive understanding of the medium. A dark, fractured sense of foreboding was perfectly matched with the music creating a powerful impression on the viewer. He had us

TESSITURA BEVILACQUA Venice, Italy
BIAFARIN Toronto, Canada
Tessitura Luigi Bevilacqua was founded in Venice around 1700, but the textile tradition started many centuries earlier: it dates back to at least 1499, when the name “Giovanni Bevilacqua, waver”, one of the family’s ancestors, appeared on a painting by Giovanni Mansueti. It is the oldest European weaving still in activity. On the original looms belonging to the Silk Guild of the Republic of Venice, even today the precious soprarizzo velvet is hand-woven with the same techniques and the same quality level imposed by the Doges. Every day the skillful hands of our weavers create unique masterpieces wealth, elegance, luxury and beauty are combined with the uniqueness of Venetian savoir-faire. The selected project shows how research, history and innovation can be merged into an artistic installation. The union of locations, materials and new technologies create a changeable and harmonious combination that enhance the Venetian tradition and culture.

ART SPIRIT FOUNDATION Southport Connecticut, United States
The Art Spirit Foundation, founded in 1998 by Dianne Bernhard, has awarded over 250 artists working in the medium of pastels, through national and international juried exhibitions. Having entered many exhibitions throughout her career as an artist, Founder Bernhard recognizes the importance that competitions play in developing successful careers of emerging artists. Through Art Spirit’s programs, monetary awards, and medals, Bernhard advocates and elevates the pastel medium, as well as creates awareness that the rewards of pastel artists should be equal to traditional arenas of painting. Through the Arte Laguna Prize, selection of artist Faldina Nataliya represents the values Bernhard contemplates for outstanding recognition in the medium of pastels. Nataliya’s beautiful modern landscapes represent a skillful understanding of composition, color, pastel technique, and subject matter in a manner that conveys a sense of individuality.

The prize, promoted and developed with Cà Foscari Sostenibile of Ca' Foscari University of Venice and made with the support of CoReVe (National Consortium for the collection, recycling and recovery of glass). The installation convinced the jury due to the ability to combine the use of recycled plastic with an in-depth research of the themes related to the sustainable development. The outcome is an artwork with a strong artistic echo and a high impact on the visitor. In Nationmetrix, recycled plastic becomes the element that makes the “forest” of steps and procedures accessible to anyone that travels and must cross the border. The visitor who physically enters the work experiences some of the goals of the sustainable development (SDG) mentioned by the UN in the 2030 Agenda, such as the need to enhance the inclusive communities and to reduce the inequalities. The feeling of oppression and freedom, and it is precisely the material basis of the traveler's nationality, are more or less distant from a development that it can be considered really sustainable.
