Presidente, Fundación Rozas-Botrán Bienvenidos a la primera edición de Rozas-Botrán Foundation Awards and Auction. Dentro del marco de celebraciones Cien30 de la Fundación Rozas-Botrán, que cumple cien años de servicio social y treinta de gestión artística y cultural, hemos creado una plataforma para difundir las expresiones de las Artes Visuales contemporáneas de Centroamérica y Panamá, para que sean apreciadas en toda su magnitud y con su propia identidad. Contamos con el apoyo de Northern Trust, institución financiera que se ha identificado con la misión social que la Fundación Rozas-Botrán desarrolla en el ámbito de la salud en Guatemala y sus países vecinos. Al equipo se ha unido un grupo profesional de curadores y especialistas para presentar un evento diferente. La selección de las obras que se premiarán se llevará a cabo durante la exposición anual en la sede de Northern Trust. Posteriormente, la obra participante se unirá con obra muy importante de artistas internacionales invitados para la Subasta de Arte Latinoamericano Rozas-Botrán en la galería Espace Expression, en la Ciudad de Miami, dentro del ambiente artístico y cultural de la temporada pre Art Basel 2015. En este ambiente se llevará a cabo la subasta. El objetivo social de la subasta se enfoca, en esta oportunidad, a la recaudación de fondos para atender a la población más necesitada de Guatemala por medio del INVEGEM. La tarea se desarrolla a través del programa de tamizaje neonatal, dirigido a la población infantil de escasos recursos de las áreas más vulnerables de esta región. Agradecemos de forma especial la generosidad y el apoyo incondicional de nuestros amigos, coleccionistas, galeristas y a los artistas porque sin su apoyo no sería posible alcanzar nuestra meta.


Jose Rozas-Botrán President, Fundación Rozas-Botrán Welcome to the first edition of the Rozas-Botrán Foundation Awards and Auction. As part of our Cien30 celebration, commemorating 100 years of social service and 30 years of promoting culture through art, we have created a platform to promote the contemporary Visual Arts of Central America and Panama so that they can be appreciated in all its magnitude and authenticity. We are extremely thankful to count with the support of our sponsor, Northern Trust, who has identified with our cause and the impact the Fundación Rozas-Botrán has had in Guatemala, and now Central America. The selection of artworks awarded will be showcased during our annual exposition in the Northern Trust headquarters. Subsequently, the exhibition will join well-known Latin American artists invited for the Rozas-Botrán Awards and Auction. This event will take place in Espace Expression Gallery located in the Wynwood Art and Design District, where it will serve as a prelude to Art Basel Miami Beach 2015. The social objective of the Awards and Auction will focus this year on generating funds for INVEGEM, our genetic research center, and their neonatal screening program, which provides preventive care for thousands of families in Guatemala. We thank the generosity and unconditional support of our friends, art collectors, gallery owners, and artists. Without them all we have achieved could not be possible.

Fundación Rozas-Botrán Fundación Rozas-Botrán es una organización sin fines de lucro que apoya la salud, la educación y el desarrollo cultural en Guatemala. La Familia Rozas-Botrán cumple 100 años de servicio social y 30 años de promoción de la cultura a través del arte en Guatemala. En los últimos años también promueve la obra del resto de Centroamérica y Panamá. A través de la promoción del arte, subvenciones, donaciones generosas y la ayuda del gobierno tenemos la capacidad de apoyar a nuestras diferentes entidades sin fines de lucro:

Hospicio San José: el Hospicio y Hospital San José atiende a adultos, jóvenes y niños con VIH/SIDA. Desde 1989 ofrece refugio, alimentación, educación, tratamiento y terapia a los pacientes residentes; así como educación, tratamiento y terapia a pacientes ambulatorios. INVEGEM: es un centro de investigación genética que asiste

a las familias y personas individuales afectadas por enfermedades hereditarias. Es el único instituto de su tipo en el país con el objetivo de ayudar a prevenir ciertas enfermedades comunes de origen genético y metabólico en la población guatemalteca.

CREA: este centro ofrece servicios

científicos y artísticos para restaurar el patrimonio artístico del país, así como el de entidades privadas y personas particulares. También apoya a las galerías de la Fundación Rozas-Botrán con la conservación y el cuidado de la obra que manejan.

COELI: es un centro ocupacional que

brinda ayuda a jóvenes con necesidades educativas especiales para incluirlos en la vida laboral con la preparación adecuada. La formación de los jóvenes incluye el área académica, laboral y personal.

Las galerías: nuestras galerías colaboran con la Fundación Rozas-Botrán en la recaudación de fondos a través del arte que promueven. Se encuentran entre los espacios expositivos más contemporáneos al servicio del arte centroamericano y del resto del continente.


Rozas-Botrán Foundation Fundación RozasBotrán is a non-profit organization that supports health, education, and cultural developments in Guatemala. We are currently celebrating 100 years of social service of the Rozas-Botrán family and 30 years of promoting culture through art in Guatemala, and now Central America and Panama. Through the promotion of art, grants, generous donations, and government assistance we are able to support our different entities:

Hospicio San José: is a non-

profit hospice and hospital for children and young adults born HIV positive. Since 1989, Hospicio San José offers shelter, food, education, treatment, and therapy for all resident patients.

INVEGEM: is a genetic research center

that attends families and individuals affected by hereditary illness. INVEGEM is the only one of its kind in the country, aiming to aid and prevent certain illnesses common in the Guatemalan population.

CREA: offers scientific and artistic services to restore our artistic heritage while also offering their services to private entities. They also support the galleries of Fundación Rozas-Botrán with conserving and caring for the artwork they handle.

COELI: is an educational center that

teaches specific work skills to young adults with special needs. COELI teaches its students culinary, artistic, and technological skills so they can integrate the work force and be appreciated by our society.

Las Galerías: Our galleries help Fundación Rozas-Botrán raise funds through the art they promote. Furthermore, they serve as some of the most contemporary spaces in Central America to exhibit artwork from our region and the rest of the continent.

Jose Rozas-Botrán (Guatemala, 1963) The Rozas-Botrán family is known for their altruism, solidarity, and Christian values. They have, through Fundación Rozas-Botrán, developed a social enterprise that provides treatment, education, and research for an entire country. As part of the fourth generation, Jose Rozas-Botrán pioneered the project until it became what it is today. He has a degree in Business Administration and Art History, is the President of Fundación Rozas-Botrán, founder of Campus Médico San José, and chairman of Hospicio San José, (which offers medical attention to anyone with HIV/AIDS) and INVEGEM (a genetic research institute created for the education, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of human genetic and metabolic diseases). Jose has also supported and has been a part of Obras Sociales del Hermano Pedro that cares for patients with severe disabilities, Guardería Virgen del Camino that offers nutrition to malnourished children, and has been chairman of several other companies, foundations, and private institutions in Guatemala. He is also an active member of Club Rotario las Américas, and has belonged to several committees within the District 4250. Additionally, Jose took an active role in the national emergency and reconstruction of his club, particularly to support reconstruction in the South Coast of Guatemala. Former President of the committee for literacy in Guatemala, Honduras, and Belize. He was awarded the Rotary International Award "Service Above Self", the highest honor bestowed annually to only 150 people worldwide. Parallel to social entrepreneurship, Jose has ventured into cultural and artistic management for over 30 years through the Fundación RozasBotrán galleries: promoting awareness and social sensibility through art. Also in the cultural spectrum, Jose chairs CREA, which focuses on the study, restoration, and scientific analysis of artistic heritage. Jose is, at the present time, working on two major projects; the establishment of an international platform for visual arts in Central America and Panama through the Rozas-Botrán Foundation US, and creating the UNIS Rozas-Botrán Museum – a contemporary museum focused on the harmonious coexistence of the students of Universidad del Istmo with Fundación Rozas-Botrán’s collection of visual art from the XX and XXI centuries.


Jurors Carol Damian (United States) Professor of Latin American art at Florida International University and former Director and Chief Curator of the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum, FIU (2008-2014). Her recent work deals with Latin American female artists and Cuban exiles for which she has written several catalogs and articles. Author of “La Virgen de los Andes, Arte y Rito en el Cusco Colonial” (Grassfield Press, 1995) among other publications. She lectures on Latin American art and has curated numerous exhibitions. Graduate of Wheaton College, Norton, Mass., with a Master’s Degree and a Doctorate from the University of Miami in pre-Columbian art in Latin American history. She has a long trajectory in artistic teaching and a wide knowledge of Latin American art.

Francine Birbragher-Rozencwaig (United States-Colombia) Writer, art critic, and independent curator. Bachelor of Science in Communication, Universidad Javierana, Bogota, Colombia; M.A. in Art History and Ph.D. in Latin American History, University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida. Former editor of ArtNexus magazine, Miami (1989-2001); she served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (1996-2013); and worked as an adjunct curator at the Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum, Miami (2010-2015). Recent curatorial projects include Colombia Recounted, Christie´s, New York (2015) and Realidades en Conflicto, Museum of the Universidad de Antioquia, Medellín (2015), and Espacio ArtNexus, Bogota (2014). Author of numerous texts, she has presided and belongs to important professional associations. Founding member of Funding Arts Broward, Fort Lauderdale; she was co-captain of the BeLive gala in 2011 and 2012; and she supports non-for profit organizations in the areas of culture, education and health. She currently serves as president of ArtNexus Foundation and she is member of the advisory board of the Friends of the Uffizi Gallery.

José Mario Maza (Guatemala) Architect with a M.A. in Museum Studies. Director of the National Museum of Modern Art since 2001, University professor of the School of Architecture and Design in Rafael Landívar University since 2000. Currently enrolled in an M.A. in Culture and Heritage Management, Rafael Landívar University. José Mario has been involved in studies and projects internationally, including ventures in Spain and Japan. Participant in revision and organization commissions, as well as an international speaker. He has also had important roles in National Museum Policy (revision), Exhibition Manual (publication), 1st Central American Museum Congress (organization and speech), UNESCO/U.S.A. Committee (speech), and the educational project “Our Stories are your Stories” (coordination). Jose Mario has taken part in several publications: articles, guides, catalogues, exhibit guidelines, development of museums, and education. His curatorial assignments have taken place internationally, including projects in Idearte/Honduras (2010); 2nd Sculpture Festival/Guatemala (2009); Arte Vivo/Colombia (2008, 2009, 2010); Cuenca Biennial/Ecuador (2007); AMARTE/El Salvador (2006); Arte en Mayo (2003 to date). Judgment and selection process of art contests, sales and auctions, including Helvetas Foundation/Young art (2004-2008); FUNSILEC/Art for the Child (2006-2008); Fundación Rozas-Botrán/ Arte en Mayo (2003-2008); and Rotary Club Guatemala/ArtxArt (2006, 2007).

Organizers Alex Slato Alex Slato & the Business of Art has 25 years of experience as art advisor, public speaker, curator, auctioneer, art appraiser, and a modern and contemporary art writer. He is the former Associate Director and Vice President of Exhibitions for the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) and the LA Artcore Center, both located in Los Angeles, California. Former VP of Exhibitions and Special projects for the Museum of Latin American Art; managing the Development and Curatorial departments. Member of the National Auctioneers Association, the Auctioneers of Florida and California, and the International Society of Appraisers. He currently spends his time between Miami and Los Angeles.

Espace-Expression Gallery Espace-Expression is located at the heart of the Wynwood Art and Design District in Miami and is directed by Jos茅 Ram贸n Moreno. Espace Expression Gallery gathers guest curators, art collectors and galleries, as well as the general public with their thematic exhibitions focused on contemporary art key concepts.

A.G. Gallery After 20 years of experience in the world of art, Alberto Gorodi opens AG Gallery in the Wynwood Art and Design District in Miami on December 2013. This respected gallery space is mostly devoted to promoting Latin American masters and specializing in geometric abstraction and kinetic art. Additionally, the space holds exhibitions of contemporary artists who present innovative proposals in the continuity of this artistic trend.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SALE This catalog, as amended by any posted notices or oral announcements made solely by the RozasBotrán Foundation US Inc.’s authorized representatives at auction (“Rozas-Botrán” or “We” or “Us”), are collectively Rozas-Botrán’s agreement with the purchaser (the “Purchaser” or “Bidder” or “You”) relative to the property listed in the catalog (the “Agreement”). The following conditions of sale are the only terms and conditions on which all property is offered for sale. By bidding at auction you agree to be bound by these terms and conditions (“Terms and Conditions”). 1. Lots offered in this auction will be exhibited for preview at Northern Trust Bank, 600 Brickell Avenue, Suite 2400, Miami, FL 33131, from October 15 through October 31, 2015, during regular banking hours. 2. All Bidders must register and provide identification in order to bid on items in the auction. Only individuals who can lawfully enter into and form contracts under applicable law may bid for and buy the items. In all cases Bidders must be at least 18 years of age. Registration will be on a confidential basis and no bids will be accepted from unregistered Bidders. To register prior to the day of the auction, call one of the representatives of Rozas-Botrán at 954-707-8737 or by email at presidencia@ fundacionrozasbotran.org. 3. When making a bid, a Bidder is accepting personal liability to pay the purchase or hammer price, including all other Applicable Charges (as defined below), unless it has been explicitly agreed in writing before commencement of the sale that the Bidder is acting as agent on behalf of an identified third party acceptable to Rozas-Botrán, and that Rozas-Botrán will only look to the principal for payment. 4. Bidders are strongly advised to examine personally any property in which they are interested before the auction takes place. The property is sold “as is”. Statements in the catalog entry for the property regarding size, quality, rarity, importance, provenance or historical relevance do not constitute a representation, warranty or assumption of liability by Us of any kind. References in the catalog entry or the condition report to damage or restoration are for guidance only and should be evaluated independently by the Bidder. The absence of such a reference does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of others. Estimates of the selling price should not be relied on as a statement that this is the price at which the item will sell or its value for any other purpose. Rozas-Botrán is not responsible in any way for errors and omissions in the catalog, or any supplemental material. Bidders are responsible for satisfying themselves concerning the condition of the property and the matters referred to in the catalog entry. 5. On the day of the auction, registered Bidders will receive a numbered paddle for identification during the bidding and as an instrument with which to make their bids. We reserve the right to withdraw any property at any time before the actual sale and we shall have no liability for each such withdrawal. We reserve the right to reject any bid. The base price is the price in which the property will be offered the day of the auction. The base price can be found in the catalog and in the list of prices. 6. We will use reasonable efforts to carry out written bids delivered to us prior to the auction for the convenience of clients who are not present at the auction in person or by an agent. Please refer to the catalog for the Absentee Bid Form. If We receive written bids for an identical amount, and at auction these are the highest bids on the property, it will be sold to the person whose written bid was received and accepted first. We do not accept liability for failing to execute a written bid or for errors or omissions in connection with it. 7. Unless otherwise indicated, all lots are offered subject to a reserve, which is the confidential minimum price below which the lot will not be sold. The auctioneer may open the bidding on any lot below the reserve by placing a bid on behalf of the seller. The auctioneer may continue to bid on behalf of the seller up to the amount of the reserve, either by placing consecutive bids or by placing bids in response to other bidders. If the auctioneer decides that any opening bid is below the value of the articles offered, he may reject the same and withdraw the article from sale, and if, having acknowledged an opening bid, he decides that any advance thereafter is insufficient, he may reject the advance.

8. Subject to the auctioneer’s discretion, the highest bidder accepted by the auctioneer will be the Purchaser and the striking of his hammer marks the acceptance of the highest bid and the conclusion of a contract for sale between the seller and the Purchaser. Risk and responsibility for the lot (including frames or glass where relevant) passes to the Purchaser upon delivery. The Purchaser must pay the full amount due (comprising the sale or hammer price, Buyer’s Premium (defined below), and any other Applicable Charges) by check or credit card immediately following the sale. The Purchaser does not acquire title until all amounts due have been received in good cleared funds even in circumstances where the lot has been released to the Purchaser. All property must be removed by the Purchaser not later than 5 business days following its sale, and it is not so removed, a handling charge of 1% of the purchase price per month will be payable by Purchaser, or We may send the purchased property to a public warehouse at the account, risk and expense of the Purchaser. If any applicable conditions are not complied with by the Purchaser, in addition to other remedies available to us by law, including without limitation holding the Purchaser liable for the total purchase price, We may, at our option, either a) cancel the sale, retaining as liquidated damages all payments made by Purchaser, or b) resell the property at public auction without reserve, and the Purchaser will be liable for any deficiency and costs, including handling charges and incidental damages in additional to the charges referenced above. We shall have the rights afforded a secured party with respect to such property. The Purchaser may not remove any lot from Our premises until it has been paid for in full. 9. In addition to the purchase or hammer price the Purchaser agrees to pay a Buyer’s Premium (15% of the purchase or hammer price), which shall be added to all purchases, and all other Applicable Charges which may include, but are not limited to, storage fees, shipping and handling charges, and taxes and duties where applicable. Unless exempted by law, the Purchaser shall be required to pay Florida State and local sales tax. If the Purchaser is exempted from sales tax by law, appropriate documentation is required before payment and delivery of the property. The Buyer´s Premium is applicable only if the item is purchased in the U.S. 10. Any property that is not sold at auction will be transferred to AG Gallery, 311 NW 28th Street, Miami, Florida 33127. You may contact the gallery at 305-591-8223 to inquire about any property that was not sold at auction and which may still be available for sale. 11. The rights and obligations of the parties with respect to this Agreement, the conduct of the auction and any matters connected with the foregoing shall be exclusively governed by and construed and enforced in accordance with the laws of the State of Florida, without regard to principles of conflicts of laws. By bidding at the auction, whether present in person or by an agent, absentee bid or other means, the You shall be deemed to have consented to the jurisdiction of the state and federal courts of the State of Florida. 12. We are not responsible for the acts or omissions of carriers or packers, whether or not recommended by Us. 13. Except as specifically set out in this Agreement, Rozas-Botrán makes no representation and expressly excludes all conditions or warranties, expressed or implied, including (but not limited to) the availability, quality, timeliness, performance, or fitness for a particular purpose of any of the items available, to the full extent permitted by law. In no event will our liability to the Purchaser exceed the purchase price actually paid. 14. If any of the provisions of this Agreement will be invalid or unenforceable, such invalidity or unenforceability will not invalidate or render unenforceable the remainder of this Agreement, but rather the remainder of this Agreement will be construed as if not containing the particular invalid or unenforceable provision or provisions, and the rights and obligations of the parties will be enforced accordingly. Moreover, if one or more of the provisions contained in this Agreement will for any reason be held to be excessively broad as to scope, activity, subject or otherwise so as to be unenforceable at law, such provision or provisions will be construed by the appropriate judicial body by limiting, revising or reducing it or them, so as to be enforceable to the maximum extent compatible with the applicable law as it then exists. 15. ALL SALES ARE FINAL.
