Welcome to Artes Mundi 8, Wales’ flagship international and most exciting contemporary art exhibition and the largest art prize in the UK.
Mae Artes Mundi 8 yn cyflwyno gwaith pum artist cyfoes cyflawn sy’n dod o Ogledd America, Ewrop, Affrica ac Asia. Mae pob un o’r artistiaid ar y rhestr fer yn archwilio beth yw ystyr bod yn ddynol mewn byd fwyfwy anesmwyth sy’n newid ar ruthr. Artes Mundi 8 features the work of five exemplary contemporary artists from across North America, Europe, Africa and Asia. Each of the shortlisted artists explores what it means to be human in a fast-changing and increasingly volatile world. The shortlist was selected by a panel of three international selectors, Daniela Pérez, Alia Swastika and Nick Aikens, who carefully scrutinized over 900 nominations before narrowing the list down to five names.

Anna Boghiguian is an Egyptian/Canadian artist living and working in Cairo. Her works combine painting, drawing, writing, collage, and sculpture to contemplate the past and present through intersections of politics, philosophy, poetry, literature and myth. In A meteor fell from the sky (2018), a new installation, Boghiguian examines the global steel industry and its wider social, cultural and political implications, from Wales to India and further afield.

Bouchra Khalili is a French/ Moroccan artist living and working in Berlin and Oslo. Working with film, video, installation, photography, and prints, Khalili’s practice articulates language, subjectivity, orality, resistance and geographical explorations. For Artes Mundi 8, Khalili presents the UK premiere of her video installation Twenty-Two Hours (2018), an investigation into revolutionary histories which considers the poet Jean Genet’s 1970 visit to the United States at the invitation of the Black Panther Party.

Artist o Wlad Thai yw Apichatpong Weerasethakul sy’n byw a gweithio yn Chiang Mai, Gwlad Thai. Wrth weithio yn y bwlch rhwng sinema a chelf gyfoes, mae’n creu gosodiadau a ffilmiau ag ansawdd breuddwyd sydd yn aml heb fod yn llinol ac yn cyfleu teimlad cryf o afleoliad ac arallfydolrwydd.
Apichatpong Weerasethakul is a Thai artist living and working in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Working in the space between cinema and contemporary art, he creates dream-like installations and films that are often non-linear and convey a strong sense of dislocation and otherworldliness.
Yn ei osodiad dwy-sgrîn Invisibility (2016), mae Weerasethakul yn holi cof a chanfyddiad mewn ffilm ledrithiol lle mae’r prif gymeriadau, yn gaeth mewn stafell, yn dechrau ymdreiddio i freuddwydion ei gilydd.
In his two-channel installation Invisibility (2016), Weerasethakul interrogates memory and perception in an illusory film in which the protagonists, confined to a room, begin to infiltrate each other’s dreams.

Trevor Paglen is an American artist living and working in Berlin. His work spans image-making, sculpture, investigative journalism, writing, engineering, and numerous other disciplines. Paglen is exhibiting selected photographs from the series The Other Night Sky (2007 – ongoing) and Limit Telephotography (2005 – ongoing). Both projects track and document classified satellites and covert military operations, investigating the unseen political geography of our times.

Otobong Nkanga is a French/Nigerian artist living and working in Antwerp. Her drawings, installations, photographs and sculptures variously examine ideas around land, the value connected to natural resources and legacies of colonialism. For Artes Mundi 8, Nkanga has created new work including a large tapestry, Double Plot (2018), and Manifest of Strains (2018), a ring shaped performative sculpture made from steel that allude to the extraction and manipulation of natural resources.
