Isabel Allende, Ritratto in seppia, 2001

I am currently a resident of Pittsburgh, PA, USA, although I grew up in the city of joy, Kolkata, India. The basic purpose of my journey abroad was higher education and to earn a PhD degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center (Omaha, USA) and am, at present employed as a Research Associate at the University of Pittsburgh, where I work as a medical scientist. Photography was merely a hobby, which I casually started pursuing a couple of years back. It allowed me to escape the confines of the rational world of science and venture into the world of unrestrained imagination. It helped me speak and express like a wordless language. So, over time, this simple hobby turned into a passion. I consider myself as a black and white fine art photographer. I fancy black and white photography over color as somehow, it frees me from distractions. I do not see black or white; I see different shades of grey, from dark to light and their tonal variation in a particular frame, and try to capture and convey the essence of the mood and emotion hidden in it. Presently I am interested mostly in minimalistic landscape/ waterscape, urban architecture, and occasionally, portraits. I tend to use long exposure approach in my photography which in my opinion renders a subtle yet strong personality to the subject. I am inspired by the works of many fine art photographers, especially Ansel Adams, Michael Kenna, and Joel Tjintjelaar. For photography, I use Nikon D3100 DSLR camera and Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G AFS FX and Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Nikkor Zoom lenses; as accessories I use Hoya ND400 and ND8 filters for daytime long exposure work, a cable release and SLIK PRO 700DX Professional Tripod. For post processing, I use combination of View NX 2, Adobe Photoshop CS4, and Nik Silver Efex Pro 2 softwares.

- Nazim Hikmet
