CONFINED SARAH GENEBLAZO
The concept of Sarah Geneblazo’s latest exhibit “Confined” is about home quarantine during the time of pandemic. Emptiness and loneliness can greatly affect one’s mental state especially during crisis. For Geneblazo, art became a sort of refuge and therapy to elude fear, anxiety, and depression. Through her works, the artist aims to covey how a home could be beautiful and safe, but wrecked and empty. It depicts the true state of life for some during the lockdown. A home identifies as a dwelling place or shelter. It is the notion in which Geneblazo defines a safe space, a place meant to provide fulfillment to one’s needs for comfort and growth. However, what would become of a home once intruded by that which negates its attributes? “Confined” is the artist’s expression of the restriction of people moving into and out of places under lockdown. The strongest symbolic concept of her works is imprisonment—physically and mentally. Geneblazo reconnected herself in her abode as she painted their actual house in Binangonan, Rizal. Inside the property are dirt and broken fragments, metaphorical of painful memories. Though traumatic memories have presented themselves through chaotic imagery, the blooming flowers on the tree represents a silver lining in this currently dire situation. “Confined” by Sarah Geneblazo will be on view at Art Lounge Manila from June 24 to July 9, 2020.
