The DISCOVERY prize is awarded every year to the gallery with the best presentation in the DISCOVERY section. The DISCOVERY section comprises 38 galleries presenting recent productions (2016 - 2019) by emerging international talents and is an important part of the Art Brussels ‘discovery’ profile. Art Brussels wishes to support the younger scene, and has therefore instigated a prize since 2013, which is awarded yearly during the opening day to the gallery that has made the most original and engaging presentation within the section.
The members of the DISCOVERY Jury are: Tessa Giblin | Director, Talbot Rice Gallery, The University of Edinburgh Hans Ulrich Obrist | Artistic Director, Serpentine Galleries, London / Senior Artistic Advisor, The Shed, New York Hélène Vandenberghe | Director, Philippe Vandenberg Foundation, Brussels / Advisor, The Institute for Artists’ Estates, Berlin

Video Project SCREEN-IT
Special Projects
Curated by Pieter Jan Valgaeren Exhibition design by Richard Venlet Hôtel de la Poste – Tour & Taxis
SCREEN IT is the title of a new media festival, organised in Hasselt (Belgium), from 5 October 2019 to 5 January 2020. SCREEN IT investigates the impact screens, universally present today, have on the arts. The screening presented at Hôtel de la Poste (Tour & Taxis), Art Brussels’ main venue, includes works questioning screen culture by artists represented by both participating galleries and partnering institutions in Brussels. These works test the medium of video art in light of previous and ongoing societal or artistic debates concerning the position of screens and media in our communities today. The works shown here may be included in the video festival SCREEN IT.

Media #mediaaesthetics
The influence of media language on the arts began with the sudden popularity and availability of television. Early adopters such as Lee Friedlander and Andy Warhol used this visual impact, together with the key social position and the language transmitted by TV, as central themes in their work. With the onslaught of the VHS tape, the DVD and the internet, media aesthetics gained considerable influence, and became a critical tool for those who wanted to reflect on society and technology. By using well-known formats, signs, and languages from popular media, artists create a profound, and often disruptive impact on the viewer. This reaction is thus facilitated by immediate recognition. Artists Daniel Arsham – Galerie Ron Mandos, Amsterdam, Jonas Lund – The Ryder Projects, London, Sam Samore – rodolphe janssen, Brussels, Constant Dullaart – Upstream, Amsterdam

Mounir Fatmi, Across the Moon, 2016-2017, 11’33’’, courtesy of Ceysson & Bénétière, Luxembourg, Paris, Saint-Etienne, New York
The rapid global spread of media and technology, generated a formal media language driven by predominantly western standards. Strongly influenced by American and European culture, mass media created a visual standard that resulted in both appropriation and critique. In addition, this standard triggered regional media productions all over the world. Locally grown aesthetics followed and formed a different view on the use of media and storytelling by creating new genres and subgenres often linked to questions of identity, history, and gender. Technology #technologyaesthetics
Artists have always challenged and questioned technology. This kind of thinking results in 'out of the box' innovations, but also in new forms of art or aesthetics. Current democratic access to open source platforms, technological education, and the advantage of easy distribution, have influenced a new generation of artists to constantly update their aesthetic language. With links to gaming, online media, and communication, the works present themselves as typical witnesses of our times. Tuncay Berkay, Untitled (Louvre), 2015, 14’06’’, courtesy of SANATORIUM, Istanbul
As early as 1967, Marshall McLuhan explained, in ‘The Medium is the message’, that all media are “extensions” of our human senses, bodies, and minds. The internet, with social media as trigger, fostered a whole new perception of identity. Supported by a societal shift towards a more personal focus on intellectual and spiritual development, 'the age of I' was born. Artists are able to place themselves, often in a digital or media context, as the central object. Staged in their personal or fictive life, identity becomes a 'pars pro toto' for their artistic expression. Venice Biennale IRMGARD SPECK Jos de Gruyter & Harald Thys Stibbe Lounge
Special Projects
In anticipation of their commission at the Belgian Pavilion in Venice this year, Jos de Gruyter & Harald Thys present a series of small sculptural heads made of plaster, fake hair and paint in the lounge of fair partner Stibbe. The faces are placed on small shelves throughout the space. The 3D-printed plaster faces of international politicians, dictators, B-movie actors, friends, publicly known recognisable figures, murderers and victims, living as well as dead historical people, are presented without any hierarchy or moral judgment. No matter their historical importance or role, they all appear equal - equally frightening and equally innocent flat, motionless and stereotyped. A booklet with individual biographies and photographs of all characters and their stories accompanies the presentation. The artists are represented by dĂŠpendance, Brussels, Galerie Isabella Bortolozzi, Berlin and Gavin Brown's Enterprise, New York/Rome. Stibbe and Art Brussels are proud to be Friends of the Belgian Pavillion of the Venice Biennale. With the indispensable support of

Lucie Lanzini What comes out is what’s inside
Lucie Lanzini pays particular attention to everyday forms for their capacity to evoke and summon memories. Her studio is the existential matrix of her creative process. A place of experimentation; it is alive, it draws you in and is a space of reflection. Through the process of sculpting, the original elements are retained, as well as their traces and their footprints. In regard to this, the created objects are in transit, because the artist's studio is as much a place of appearance as of disappearance. As soon as the artwork exists, the artist incorporates the anticipated separation. The autonomy of the work is the prerequisite of its existence. What comes out is what's inside bears the mark of an absence while providing proof of a multitude of states of being and interrelationships. Vik Muniz Shared roots 2019
Shared roots is a creation of 6 photographic works inspired by winegrowers and vineyards, who together, face challenging natural conditions each season. Through the use of organic elements such as pieces of blackened wood, charcoal or chardonnay leaves, his photographs highlight our perception of scale and play with our senses. In his artworks for the Maison, Vik Muniz captured the deep relationships between humans and nature, winegrowers and vines, Ruinart and the Champagne terroir; emphasising the creative tension that transforms adversity into wonder. Discover Vik Muniz artworks in the unique setting of the Ruinart champagne lounge. Elegance, know-how and light are the watchwords of the oldest champagne house. The early commitment to art began in 1896 when the house commissioned Czech artist Alphonse Mucha in 1896 to create a poster. Maison Ruinart continues today its artistic commitment through its support for the biggest international art fairs and entrusts each year a carte blanche to a contemporary artist. A way to express its heritage, its history and its know-how through the original and creative vision of artists.

Le Salon Art Contest Jolien De Roo Expectations, 2018
Special Projects
Jolien De Roo is the first laureate and prize winner of ArtContest 2018, supported by Boghossian Foundation. She shows recent works at Art Brussels’ VIP Lounge. De Roo questions the relation between the presence and the absence of meaning. In each work, a precisely constructed and layered image is outlining a strange combination of abstract and figurative elements. Ambiguous forms often become figures inside the scenario of the image. Intrigued by the idea of creating a universe in which all those characters meet, no work can be understood by itself and each image questions itself relating to the other pictures. Therefore, De Roo asks herself how far she can, as an artist, manipulate the meaning associated to her works; does the act to give a meaning to an image depend exclusively on the viewer or is it the prerogative of the artist as creator?

Foundation Frison Horta Foundation Frison Horta is located in a beautiful art nouveau building by Victor Horta from 1894. It was his third house and the only Horta house in the historical city centre with all its furnishings from the period, making it a time capsule; a living museum. Foundation Frison Horta is an active cultural bridge between East and West, preserving and sustaining rich Art & Crafts of a bygone era, in an artistic art de vivre form.
