WANT TO GET RID OF YOUR DOUBLE CHIN?
Crutchfield Dermatology has the solution.
WHAT IS KYBELLA™?
KYBELLA is a prescription medication used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called “double chin.” TM
WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS OF KYBELLA™?
Side effects are generally mild and include brief swelling, bruising and tenderness. Downtime is minimal. For best results, treatment sessions involve multiple small injections repeated every six weeks for two to four total treatments. We have had good results using Lipodissolve Ultra to treat jowls, too. Charles E. Crutchfield III M.D., Medical Director of Eagan, MN-based Crutchfield Dermatology is among the first physicians to offer Kybella , the latest non-surgical treatment to reduce the appearance of underchin fullness. using injectable medications to dissolve unwanted under chin fat than anyone in the United States and has published a landmark scientific paper on “Lipodissolve Ultra,” a safe, effective technique using injectable medications for the treatment of double chins and other areas of unwanted fat. Lipodissolve Ultra utilizes phosphatidyl choline and deoxycholate – the FDA-approved active ingredient in Kybella – to dissolve unwanted under-chin fat. According to the manufacturer of Kybella , Kythera Biopharmaceuticals: “Kybella is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown of dietary fat.” The Kybella medicine is injected into the submental area, which allows the medicine to rupture the fat cell membranes and permanently destroy unwanted chin fat. “We’ve had very satisfying results amongst our patients,” says Dr. Crutchfield. On The Cover The cover of our autumn 2015 issue features the impeccable Elizabeth C. Quinlan House, as captured by Ron Traeger of Hutchinson, Minnesota. Now on the National Register of Historic Places, the three-story Renaissance Revival residence was built in Minneapolis’s prestigious Lowry Hill neighborhood in 1925 for $47,000. It was inspired by Elizabeth C. Quinlan’s travels to Italy and designed by renowned architect Frederick Lee Ackerman. Quinlan cofounded the Young-Quinlan Company, the first women’s ready-to-wear shop west of the Mississippi River. Debuting in 1894, the downtown Minneapolis department store soared to great success and earned the Wisconsin native national recognition as a pioneering businesswoman. In 1926, she again commissioned architect Ackerman to erect a five-story emporium at 901 Nicollet Avenue, dubbed the Young-Quinlan Building. Upon its completion, the $1.25-million building was considered the largest women’s specialty shop in America. Quinlan resided at the 1711 Emerson Avenue South abode until her death in 1947. At that time, she left all her assets to her nephew, William Lahiff. He lived in the house until 1979, when he donated it to the Minneapolis Institute of Art. In 1981, the institute returned it to private ownership. Today, the home serves as a lasting symbol of Quinlan’s strides and success.

Malt Maestro Glen Moray Distillery crafts supreme Scotch. | BY AMBER GIBSON
T
he distillation process at Glen Moray remains the same as in 1897. Just the fifth manager in those 118 years, master distiller Graham Coull lives onsite and oversees production from the milling of the malted barley and the mashing of the grist to the distillation and maturation of the finished spirit. Known for his innovative cask finishes, Coull employs barrels from across the world and experiments with various flavors to create well-balanced, smooth spirits representative of Scotland’s

Speyside region. Most of the distillery’s Scotch is matured in North American bourbon barrels, resulting in a sweet, fruity offering with notes of vanilla and toffee instead of the stereotypical smoky iteration. The master distiller also uses Chardonnay casks from Burgundy, France, to marry the wine’s crisp character with the liquor’s sweet shortbread and butterscotch notes. These imaginative flavor profiles have garnered international acclaim. In March, the World Whiskies Awards named Glen Moray’s 25-year-old port cask finish the
best Speyside single-malt 21 years and over. After maturation in North American bourbon barrels, the liquor spends eight months in port casks, which impart notes of wine, dark fruit and chocolate. Coull’s favorite among Glen Moray’s offerings? The 12-year-old single-malt whiskey. “It has the perfect balance of distillery and cask character,” he says. “It’s a whiskey for all occasions. I do enjoy the Scottish tradition of drinking whiskey with a small beer; IPA is my favorite. The sweet, fruity flavors of the whiskey work well with the tangy, citrus flavors of beer.”

Go Green Artful Living revives the iconic grasshopper. | BY MARGUERITE HAPPE
PHOTOGRAPHY BY MELISSA OHOLENDT
44 Artful ArtfulLiving Living| |Magazine Magazineofofthe theNorth North
Grasshopper Anew Makes two cocktails 1 cup packed chocolate-mint leaves 1 cup simple syrup 3 ounces Tattersall Distilling vodka .5 ounce Tempus Fugit Spirits crème de cacao .5 ounce Fernet-Branca 1 whole egg To make the chocolate-mint syrup, blanch chocolate-mint leaves. Purée in simple syrup and steep overnight. Fine strain. Add vodka, crème de cacao, Fernet-Branca, egg and 1.5 ounces chocolate-mint syrup to a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously for 30 seconds. Strain and shake again without ice. Using a fine mesh strainer, double strain into two cocktail glasses. Garnish each grasshopper with a slapped chocolate-mint leaf.
L
ore regarding the grasshopper is fuzzy, and that’s not just due to the drink’s alcoholic content. The most common narrative places its creation at a 1919 cocktail competition in New York; however, this was smack in the middle of Prohibition, when historical documents left out good portions of illegal alcoholic activity. In later decades, thanks to Wisconsin’s booming dairy industry, the libation became a beloved supper-club dessert drink. Artful Living asked Jason Suss, the barkeep at St. Paul’s Saint Dinette, to revive the minty grasshopper. Inspired by the bounty of a fresh chocolate-mint patch at Wisconsin’s Everwood Farmstead, he turned the herb into a syrup and paired it with crème de cacao, a touch of Fernet-Branca and some Tattersall vodka. Suss created a base with a substantial proof and plenty of flavor — but what about that creamy North twist? “Heavy cream is what’s usually used, but that’s a lot of fat and dairy,” he says. “Fortunately, eggs do the same thing. So, I added a whole egg and shook the hell out of it.”

All That Glitters A day in the life of a gemstone buyer. | BY MARGUERITE HAPPE
I
magining the life of a gemstone buyer brings to mind an air of joie de vivre, of extravagant vacations sprinkled with luxuriously rare diamonds and gems. “Whenever I mention a buying trip in conversation, people imagine these glamorous, vacation-esque days spent playing with gemstones,” says Hope Wixon, owner of Wixon Jewelers. “We make several trips a year to select the jewelry and watches for our store. And in reality? There’s nothing vacation-like about it.” Artful Living asked Wixon to take us behind the scenes as she heads off on an annual gemstone-buying trip.
9 a.m. I start the day waiting in a long line to show my credentials and pick up my buyer’s badge. The next four hours are spent walking from booth to booth looking for the ultimate 10-carat sapphire, an assortment of 3- to 8-carat sapphires, some fine rubies, black opals, Paraiba tourmaline, Colombian emeralds — the list goes on.
11 a.m. Each booth has terrible lighting. I stare at literally thousands of gems through my jeweler’s loupe trying to decide if this one is prettier than the last. Is the price better? How is the cut? What types of inclusions are there? What did I already buy? With more than
48 Artful Living
| Magazine of the North
140 countries represented, thousands of booths and some strong language barriers, the show can be tough to navigate.
2 p.m. By this time, my brain is a little mushy. I’ve been on my feet all morning, so I opt for lunch. I make, hopefully, my first and only mistake of the day: My egg roll is greasy and cold, just like the rice. At least I found a spot to sit. Ten minutes later, I hit the show floor for another four hours.
6 p.m. At the end of the day, I am exhausted. I’ve got an assortment of gems in my bag, my mind is spinning with numbers and colors, and I just plain can’t think anymore. All I want to do is to kick off these shoes and go to sleep so I can get up and do it again tomorrow — and the next day and the next day. Why endure these long days? “We do this for one simple reason,” says Wixon. “It’s impossible to offer this particular brand of quality, value and uniqueness to our clients unless we travel and put in the long hours to hunt down the most spectacular pieces in the world. After 26 years, our favorite part is still watching our clients fall in love with the gems we bring home.”

he Minneapolis Club has partnered with Artful Living to present its third annual Artisan Revival on Tuesday, November 10, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Attendees can enjoy an evening of live music, delicious small bites, signature drinks and beautifully crafted goods available from the makers themselves, highlighting our handpicked A-List finalists. This year’s gratis event takes place in the historic club’s third-floor main dining room, which recently has been restored to its 1900s splendor. “Our inspiration for featuring American-made wares really grew out of showcasing some of our members’ own creations,” explains

Artful Living | Magazine of the North
Executive/Marketing Assistant Katy Vanderwood, who organizes the elegant affair. “There is an interest in the ‘slow movement’ and an appreciation for craft that resonates here at the club. Less disposable, less mass-marketed products and more valued, timeless pieces are what interest our members and guests.” Hundreds of people partook in last year’s soiree, which featured more than 30 vendors from across the North. It’s the perfect opportunity to get started on holiday shopping in a fun, social setting, says Vanderwood, all while supporting up-and-coming artisans and talented makers. America, she launched New York Fashion Week and in turn gained rare access to style icons. In 2011, Mallis kicked off an innovative discussion series held at New York’s iconic 92nd Street Y featuring a who’s who of designers, photographers and other influencers — the basis for this book. No topic was off-limits, with conversations encompassing everything from upbringings and achievements to fears and failures. Paired with never-before-seen photographs belonging to the interviewees, the 19 stories featured herein represent an oral history of American fashion. The discussion series, meanwhile, is going strong. Mallis hopes to sit down with such luminaries as Karl Lagerfeld and Ralph Lauren (that’s right — he hasn’t yet been in the hot seat). Sounds like the perfect makings for a sequel.

he names strewn across the cover of Fashion Lives: Fashion Icons with Fern Mallis certainly are cause for curiosity. But the fact that the author sat down for candid conversations with the likes of Oscar de la Renta, Calvin Klein and Vera Wang is enough to induce some serious envy. Luckily for fashionistas, the no-holds-barred interviews are captured in their entirety in this 448-page tome. The foreword from the legendary Ralph Lauren describes Mallis thusly: “Though her name is not on a label, Fern Mallis has made her own mark on the world of American fashion. Her amazing energy and passion and respect for the art of fashion and those who craft and celebrate it have been her life’s work.” Indeed, during her decade as executive director of the Council of Fashion Designers of

was to design a home for my family that honors our ancestry with modern style.
“
I wanted to embrace the picturesque view of the Mississippi River throughout all the major living spaces of my home. The simple and enduring European style of my home was achieved with Kolbe’s made-to-order windows and doors. These large expanses of glass elegantly frame my river views, allowing me and my family to enjoy blended spaces for gathering as well as retreating.

A Driving Passion The RM Sotheby’s Motor City sale auctions off automotive history. | BY WENDY LUBOVICH
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY SOTHEBY'S AUCTION HOUSE
W
hile the auction world has been buzzing about recent record prices for contemporary and modern paintings, another category of collecting is gaining speed: autos, for both their artful design and vintage appeal. “There’s no questioning the strength and resilience of today’s collector-car market,” says Gord Duff, a car specialist with RM Sotheby’s. “It’s driven by educated, passionate enthusiasts, and quality, blue-chip automobiles remain in high demand and continue to fetch strong prices at auction.” It’s only fitting that Detroit, the cradle of American automobile design, would play host to one of the year’s most anticipated sales of fine collector cars. Bringing in a total of $7.4 million, the RM Sotheby’s Motor City sale lifted the gavel on 80 vehicles representing nearly a century of automotive history.
60
Artful Living | Magazine of the North
Much anticipation surrounded a 1934 Auburn Twelve Salon Speedster, which sold for $506,000. Just nine of these cars were ever produced in Auburn, Indiana, and of those, only four have survived. “It checks all the boxes when it comes to great design, engineering, rarity and provenance,” Duff explains. “It’s unlikely we’ll see another example come to market any time soon, making this a very special ownership opportunity.” A 1968 Shelby GT500KR convertible once owned by the model’s namesake fetched $203,500. Renowned racecar driver Carroll Shelby worked with the Ford Motor Company to design the Mustang-based performance auto. Known for its hefty horsepower and luxurious interior, the so-called King of the Road was a favorite of the car-savvy Hollywood set and remains popular today. Extols Duff: “There’s nothing better than an automobile formerly owned by the man whose name it bears.”

A winning combination of 410 Italian stallions under the hood, all-wheel drive and a paddle-shifted, eight-speed automatic transmission makes the Ghibli as sure-footed as it is fast. Life is too short to drive boring cars. The Maserati Ghibli S Q4 exudes passion, incredible craftsmanship and head-turning style wherever it goes. Welcome to the tiny Caribbean island of Saba. | BY FRANK ROFFERS
T
he flight from St. Maarten lasted just 12 minutes when our 16-seat Twin Otter started its approach to the Caribbean island of Saba. The cockpit door was wide open, and the pilots calmly executed a hairpin turn next to a rocky cliff, followed by a sharp nosedive. Seconds later, they slammed on the brakes and the plane landed with a jolt 100 feet from the end of the runway.

I later learned that Saba’s Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport has the shortest commercial runway in the world at 1,312 feet. It’s like landing on an aircraft carrier; the sides of the tarmac end with steep cliffs 400 feet above the ocean. My first impression of the island came a few minutes later inside the two-room airport with a ticket office that felt like a grownup lemonade stand. I knew I was in for a unique travel experience.

The Unspoiled Queen
Saba is a tiny Dutch island that soars out of the Caribbean Sea with an area of just five square miles. Steep with rocky shores, it’s a paradise for ecotourism, scuba diving and hiking. Beaches are few and far between, with just two truly sandy spots: Cove Bay and Well’s Bay. Settled more than 300 years ago, the island has a community of some 1,600 close-knit, English-speaking residents. It remains largely untouched by the 21st century, and the people of Saba proudly refer to their isle as “The Unspoiled Queen.” Islanders are self-sufficient people related through centuries of intermarriage. They know each other by name, including most dogs and cats. The local joke is that you can only go up or down in Saba. Authorities back in the Netherlands did not believe it was possible to build a road in the rugged terrain. Undeterred, the Sabans, led by a man who had only a mail-order engineering degree, built it carefully by hand. Construction took 20 years and was completed in 1958. Cutting through dense forest with dramatic peaks and valleys, this single road (known, quite fittingly, as “the road”) services four distinct villages: Hell’s Gate, Windwardside, St. John’s and the Bottom. Windwardside, with its banks, restaurants and shops, serves as Saba’s commercial heart. Natives genuinely embrace tourism and make visitors feel welcome. Oddly enough, there is a medical school on the island with 400 students, giving it an almost college-town vibe. There is no crime,
If You Go Getting There Winair offers five daily flights from St. Maarten. Ferry service, offered twice daily, takes 90 minutes.
What to Expect Year round, days on the island average 75 to 85 degrees with little or no humidity. Cooled by mountain breezes, night temperatures drop to 55 and 65 degrees.
Where to Stay Eight small inns offer a total of 150 rooms. Saba Island Premier Properties (sabaislandpremierproperties.com) can arrange private villa rental.
Where to Dine Saba’s dozen restaurants are quite small and informal. Reservations are recommended. Fare ranges from fresh seafood to Creole and Caribbean specialties. Brigadoon in Windwardside is a mainstay situated in an 1800s house.

and the main modes of transportation are walking, bicycling, or flagging down one of the 20 or so cabs that roam the island. Goats and roosters seem to own the roadsides. The architecture is remarkably consistent, with white wooden façades, green shutters and bright red roofs. Gingerbread woodcutting features prominently on shutters, pergolas and fences. The two main activities on the island are scuba diving and hiking. Below the water line lies a colorful kingdom of coral teeming with sharks, turtles and schools of fish. More than 30 dive sites dot the sea surrounding the island, offering reefs, pinnacles and peaks. Premier sites include Man O’ War Shoals, Diamond

Rock and Eye-of-the-Needle. Sea Saba Dive Center runs daily trips into the Saba Marine Park. The island features a network of more than 15 carefully marked and maintained trails ranging from moderate to strenuous, making for a hiker’s paradise. Settings range from rainforests to tide pools to historic ruins in this rich natural wonderland. James “Crocodile” Johnson, trail manager at the Saba Conservation Foundation, is a lifelong expert and leads guided hikes. Little Saba is a departure from the ordinary and remains a best-kept secret. The island looms large and represents the old Caribbean: charming, friendly and unusual.

THE CRYSTAL PALACE The luxurious Baccarat Hotel glistens inside and out.

BY WENDY LUBOVICH
Baccarat Hotel, 28 W. 53rd St., New York 212-790-8800 // baccarathotels.com
Right across the street from the Museum of Modern Art, legendary French crystal maker Baccarat has created a lavish artwork of its own: a sumptuously appointed hotel and residence that glistens like a crystal goblet. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP, the 50-story structure appears lit from within, with soaring exterior walls of rippled glass. The second-floor grand and petite salons are modern-day Versailles fantasies. French interior designers Patrick Gilles and Dorothée Boissier have decked out the spaces with fur-upholstered seating, silver-leafed wood paneling and pleated silk walls. And shimmering all about are glorious crystal chandeliers and overscale vases. Each of the 114 guest rooms feels like a New York pied-à-terre, with crisp linens by Mascioni and dramatic, glass-walled showers. A custom-designed, red enameled minibar holds Baccarat goblets at the ready along with treats from French gourmet brand Fauchon. For ultimate pampering, products from lavish cult brand La Mer await, a gift from the in-house Spa de La Mer, the first in the country.

Chevalier, 30 W. 53rd St., New York 212-790-8869 // baccarathotels.com/dining/chevalier Chevalier, the elegant, street-side dining establishment inside the Baccarat hotel, aims to add a New York air to classic French fare. The space feels perfectly pressed. It is lightly furnished with cool shades of cream leather and oat-hued upholstery by New York interior designer Stephen Sills. Modest touches of crystal in stemware and tabletop lamps highlight the Baccarat story. The restaurant’s soaring ceilings and rippling silk drapes make for a freshly intimate atmosphere. The discrete bar offers a hushed respite from the bustling street and serves up celebratory drinks in weighty Baccarat tumblers and flutes. Michelin-starred Executive Chef Shea Gallante offers reinvented Parisian dishes with house-made charcuterie plated like miniature sculptures. Don’t miss the lively bouillabaisse paired with lavender-scented duck breast and Medjool date purée. If it’s privacy you’re after, book the 14-person La Cour chef’s table. With its bird’s-eye view of the kitchen, it’s the perfect place to sample the cloud-like Valrhona chocolate soufflé: c’est formidable!

BRITISH INVASION Vivienne Westwood hits the Big Apple.

BY WENDY LUBOVICH
Vivienne Westwood, 14 E. 55th St., New York viviennewestwood.com
Dame Vivienne Westwood, the irreverent punk and new-wave fashion designer, brings her edgy point of view to Midtown this fall. Spanning six stories of a Beaux Arts building, the shop will be the brand’s largest retail location thus far. It follows smaller stateside boutiques in Los Angeles and Honolulu. The East 55th Street prewar townhouse will feature collections Anglomania, Gold Label and Red Label alongside a bridal and eveningwear salon. Accessory lines also will play a major role. Combining her counterculture punk aesthetic with Savile Row tailoring techniques, Westwood has led the British avant-garde since the 1970s. She twists classics to her own caprice, employing such heritage fabrics as tartan plaids and Harris tweeds. Borrowing from street culture as well as 17th and 18th century costume design, her looks are traditional yet trendy.

It makes sense when you consider that Nevena Borissova was just 22 when she opened the flagship Los Angeles boutique. “I love to discover new talent,” she says. “We try to mix brands we know and love with up-and-coming designers every season.” The shop was the first in California to carry international designers like Antonio Berardi, Iro and Isabel Marant. Today, Curve has grown into a mini empire, with outposts in New York, San Francisco, Miami Beach and, most recently, Malibu. A few seasons ago, Borissova even launched her own brand, A.O.T.C. PLANT LIFE A Mexican-flavored vegan eatery is all the rage.
|
BY HAYLEY DULIN
Gracias Madre, 8905 Melrose Ave., West Hollywood 323-978-2170 // graciasmadreweho.com
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIC WOLFINGER AND BETHANY NAURET
Leave it to Los Angeles to debut a vegan restaurant that not only stays afloat but has hipsters and Hollywood heartthrobs alike flocking to Melrose Avenue. Gracias Madre boasts a plant-based, Mexican-inspired menu (think black beans, squash, roasted potatoes, mushrooms and leafy greens) that will have even the biggest meat eaters coming back for seconds. Though the entire menu is drool-worthy, certain dishes are not to be missed. Begin with the guacamole, spiked with chili and lime, and served with house-made tortilla chips. As a main course, order the sopes con piña: two masa cakes topped with beans, pineapple-habanero salsa, guacamole, pickled cabbage and a drizzling of light cashew crema. For dessert, the Mexican wedding cookies served with chocolate coconut ice cream cannot be beat. Last but never least: cocktails. Tequila and mescal are the standouts here, with beer, sangria and wine rounding out the offerings. My pick? The boozy popsicle, featuring a tequila base paired with flavors of roasted pineapple and jalapeño. Gracias Madre’s interior is simple and elegant with a traditional Mexican aesthetic. An oversize, antique mirror anchors the back wall, while sconces, lanterns and plants add texture and dimension to the space. The tables offer bench seating, upholstered in linen and decorated with bright throw pillows, flanked by rattan and iron chairs. If the weather cooperates (and really, when does it not?), the patio is perfect for a casual lunch or a romantic dinner under the twinkling lights.

ROLE PLAY An inventive inn taps into guests’ imaginations.

BY HAYLEY DULIN
Hotel Covell, 4626 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles 323-660-4300 // hotelcovell.com
At long last, East Hollywood has a boutique hotel to call its own. Located in trendy Los Feliz, Hotel Covell sits atop popular watering hole Bar Covell in a classic 1930s Art Deco building. It is the brainchild of restaurateur Dustin Lancaster and designer Sally Breer, who together executed Lancaster’s highly conceptualized vision: Each of the inn’s five rooms represent a different chapter in fictional character George Covell’s life. Like Lancaster, the writer hails from Oklahoma. Chapter 1, with its rustic charm, takes inspiration from Covell’s humble upbringing. In Chapter 2, guests are transported to 1950s New York, where he enjoyed his bachelor days. Chapter 3 tells the tale of Covell’s time in bohemian Paris (though the bay window overlooking the Hollywood Hills may ruin the illusion). Chapter 4 is the hotel’s two-bedroom master suite and portrays the opulent lifestyle he enjoyed with his success. The final room, Chapter 5, combines French elegance and Big Apple sophistication to create a distinct 1970s vibe. Each guest room feels like an apartment, complete with a kitchenette featuring a Smeg refrigerator and shelves filled with personal knickknacks, like vintage photos and ceramic vases. All bathrooms feature a walk-in shower — some have a claw-foot bathtub — and are stocked with Malin+Goetz products. You will feel perfectly at home in whichever room you book. And don’t worry: Mr. Covell won’t be returning anytime soon.

Even a labyrinth. BucketFeet is an online marketplace making it happen. There are a few standard models — lace-up, slip-on, mid-top and flip-flops — but the vibrant design selection, including work from emerging artists in some 100 countries, is constantly growing and changing. The Chicago startup opened its biggest brick-and-mortar retail space in June, an 1,800-square-foot Bucktown studio showcasing a rotating selection of men’s and women’s footwear. Pop-up shops everywhere from Switzerland to Taiwan have been wildly successful, but this studio serves as a more permanent center for collaborative workshops between artists and customers. It’s here that you’ll find one-of-a-kind, hand-designed shoes, wall prints and seasonal artist installations. “Our products resonate with a broad range of people,” says CEO and cofounder Raaja Nemani. “Kids and adults, men and women — those who appreciate art, want to stand out and seek authenticity in what they wear.”

It’s rare that a restaurant really makes you appreciate carpentry, but the pristine wood veneers that line the walls at Grace in the West Loop are breathtaking. Take a closer look and you’ll realize that the woods are perfectly matched and that their honey-colored grain all runs in the same direction. That’s because the materials all come from a handful of the same Iowa-grown brown ash trees. They were hand selected and installed by master millworker Seth Deysach of Lagomorph Designs. It may seem silly to rave about woodwork, but it’s a perfect example of the intense attention to detail and luxury that Chef Curtis Duffy and General Manager Michael Muser bring to everything they do at Grace. Case in point: When choosing seating for the dining room, the duo evaluated almost 200 different chairs. They weren’t satisfied with the comfort or style — something that’s important when you spend three or more hours eating a lavish, pre-fixe meal. Ultimately, they found these handcrafted, high-back, micro-suede club chairs that are so plush you might just want to take one home with you. Even the bathrooms are mind-blowing. Each features custom materials and is designed to represent one of the four seasons. The winter water closet has a sleek, modern sink that looks like a cross between a snowdrift and a topographical map. The capper of course is Duffy’s impeccable food. Take your pick of two 10-course, pre-fixe options. The fauna menu is larded with pristine A5 miyazaki beef and thick planks of buttery king crab. The flora menu, filled with morels and hand-foraged miner’s lettuces, is simply one of the most complex vegetarian menus in America. To top it all off, the chef's presentations, which might include spheres made from Japanese sudachi citrus juice served in the crook of a tree branch, are delightfully naturalistic. When the dish arrives, it feels as though an orange grove has been placed on your table — a most delightful detail indeed.

Peter Sowinski Custom Furniture MINNEAPOLIS petersowinski.com We couldn’t have said it better: “Along the way, I came to realize that art is not just what we hang on our walls but also the objects we use every day,” muses Peter Sowinski. He handcrafts each piece in his Northeast Minneapolis studio using materials from independent neighborhood businesses. His Sidecar bar cart is the perfect balance of beauty and function, featuring stainless-steel shelves, teak joinery and a hand-rubbed oil finish. $1,150

This beautiful, natural-edged cherry wood bowl illustrates the love that artist John Dempsey has for woodworking and turning. He combines woods and metals to create intriguing artwork and utilitarian pieces, such as a walnut end-grain turned box with slip front lid and vases both turned and with natural edges.
Louise Gray quilts are handcrafted by local artisans using 100-percent cotton materials. The combined vision of partners Alexandra Gray Bennett and Jocelin Johnson, the brand utilizes contemporary design as a means of keeping the time-honored tradition of quilt making alive. Each piece enhances the living space of the modern, the detail-oriented and the socially conscience.
Ben Fiess’s utilitarian ceramics caught our eye for their color, glaze and texture. We were equally delighted to find them as functional as they are beautiful. The artist’s fascination with ceramic chemistry led him to develop an online glaze and clay body database. These beautiful jars are perfect for any room of the house. The difficulty lies in choosing just one!

Kate Marie Anderson MINNEAPOLIS katemarieanderson.com Kate Marie Anderson’s aesthetic is best described as raw, honest and intricate. She was inspired by the contrast of nature and industry in her native North. Educated at the Istituto Europeo di Design in Barcelona, she moved to New York to work with 3.1 Phillip Lim and Zero + Maria Cornejo. We simply can’t get enough of the luxe outerwear from her A/W 2015 Capsule Coat Collection, such as this cream weave coat. Starting at $429

Lauren Shoff’s jewelry career began while studying fashion design at the Art Institute of Chicago. Her talent has been recognized nationally, and she is working toward her graduate gemology degree. Her current collection combines the simplicity of natural elements with the complexity of baroque architecture. L. Shoff jewelry is perfect on its own or layered together.
Founder Zachary Kopp’s signature red beard and its upkeep were the impetus behind this line of all-natural, handcrafted men’s apothecary products. Employing argan and avocado oils, the Wunder Bart Beard Oil has become a go-to for well-groomed gents with a preference for premier beard care. Even the fairer sex has adopted it as a pre-blowout smoothing aid.
Trained as an architect, Martha McQuade works and teaches across various creative fields, including textiles, clothing design and photography. We are especially fond of her small-batch, kettle-dyed scarves available in organic cotton, sheer knit and wool. Our pick? The sheer knit, made on a vintage machine from fine merino wool or baby alpaca.

5 Infused Vodka WINSTED, MINNESOTA fivevodka.com A couple friends balancing life, family and work decided to slow things down and share a drink — and the rest, as they say, is history. That drink inspired them to create a new business. The founders of 5 Infused Vodka believe that great vodka should be made by cooks, not chemists. Their spirits are crafted using natural ingredients, such as Wisconsin cranberries and California oranges. Starting at $24

The cacao beans that make up Terroir Chocolate confections are hand sorted, small-batch roasted and stone ground for days. Each organic, single-origin dark-chocolate bar has a unique taste profile due to the influence of the soil, the climate and the vegetation grown around the cacao tree. The founders’ advice? While enjoying Terroir Chocolate, let it linger on the tongue — if it lasts that long!
Clare and Matt Stoner Fehsenfeld of Quince & Apple really believe in handcrafted artisan foods and syrups. They actually slice, dice and caramelize into the wee hours of the morning, seven days a week. Their creations are carefully tested and tasted at each step of the process to meet their exacting standards. This artisan-centered approach allows the duo to use the highest quality produce, adjusting for differences in season and variety.
Little place, big flavor. The Trinko family recipe is still the same as it was 60 years ago. The signature pepperoni is made from beef and pork paired with all-natural seasonings. Other cult favorites include jerky, salami, bacon, bratwurst, Polish sausage and our favorite, maplewurst, made with pure maple syrup.

Northern Toboggan & Sled’s creations are crafted in the same tradition originally used in the 1800s. The design of the company’s top-selling wooden snow sleds, perfect for family and function, is centered on durability and practicality. Each piece can be customized with pads, sliders and personalized engraving.
Many outdoor enthusiasts recommend spending at least one night in a tipi. Consider setting up an authentic one crafted by one of the country’s best, NorthWest Tipis. Owner and craftsman Randy Bendt will recommend the right size and construction to meet your needs. Recognized around the world for their functional and aesthetic qualities, tipis are becoming mainstays for backyard playdates and weekend wilderness getaways alike.
With every Annex baseball bat, brothers Matt and Tony Ingle bring their love of the game into their products. Crafted from the same sugar maple that the big leaguers use, they come in 10-plus styles, complete with hand-burned custom lettering. The brothers have the worthiest of goals: to have a handcrafted bat in the hands of every little league team in the country.

Constructing Heritage Architect Andrea Swan designs a Mississippi River retreat. | BY MARGUERITE HAPPE
“
Until 2012, we lived in a comfortable 1961 rambler on the Mississippi River,” says Andrea Swan, founder of boutique architecture firm Swan Architecture. “When we had our first daughter, Emilia, we remodeled to create space, and life was good.” All was well until the family found out they were expecting once again — and that this time city codes wouldn’t allow them to add on another bedroom due to floodplain regulations. When they found a house in the same area ripe for teardown on 2.5 acres with 300 feet of shoreline, the Swans knew it was the perfect spot to design and build their own home. Heritage and tradition guided Swan’s design process: “This house is really just about my family and me,” she explains. “At the end of the day, does it make you live easier? Does it make you inspired to be better, and do better, every day?” Her drive to continuously grow is partly inspired by her identity as a first-generation child of Eastern European immigrants. After fleeing their native Slovakia in 1969, her parents worked hard to create a new life for their family in Minnesota. Today, three flags fly in front of the Swan household: A Slovak flag to pay homage to her heritage, a Swedish flag to honor her husband’s family tree, and an American flag to celebrate their nationality, town and new home.

Other details from the designer’s European past are found throughout the home. Clean lines and the military-esque façade are pulled from architecture prevalent in the Swiss Alps. While the exterior feels reminiscent of a Bavarian embassy, the interior offers a calming, soothing retreat. Countertops from Amsum & Ash complete what Swan calls the most important room in the house: the main kitchen. “We didn’t opt for an isolated dining room or living room, because I find that most people enjoy spending time in the kitchen, where the action occurs,” she explains. “Formal appendages aren’t used as often anymore, and with a simple, symmetrical home design, the kitchen can become the nucleus.” Massive windows with stunning river views are the result of a collaboration with Kolbe Windows & Doors, a relationship that Swan values immensely: “I wanted to work with a company that could truly fulfill our quality and aesthetic needs,” she says. “With any questions, even about the smallest detail, the Kolbe staff was invaluable in matching exactly what I was looking for. I called them regularly throughout the design process, and they went above and beyond to answer any question or make any adjustment.” “This house isn’t a showcase home for Swan Architecture; it wasn’t built to generate work,” she adds. “It’s personal to me and my family, as a custom home should be. It’s a celebration of what’s truly important: my family, our passions and my background.”

or two years, Karen and Bill lived the Parisian lifestyle, surrounded by sidewalk cafes, chic boutiques and incredible cuisine. That is until the couple moved back to Minnesota and Bill retired from the job that sent them to France in the first place. “We loved living in Paris,” says Karen. “It was such a unique place, and we knew we wanted to return to city living some day.” That return to an urban lifestyle began after a long search yielded the perfect skyline setting. Karen spent years diligently scouring listings until a top-floor unit in the Cobalt Condos, situated in Minneapolis’s historic St. Anthony Main
neighborhood, popped up. “Bill wasn’t so sure at first,” she recalls. “But then he saw the view of Minneapolis, and he was sold.” The couple purchased the unfinished, 4,000-square-foot space, which Karen describes as an empty shell with concrete floors, exposed beams and no walls. They assembled a team led by architect Thomas Whitcomb to help them complete a project of this scale and scope. After an initial meeting with Lisa Peck, ASID, owner and principal designer of LiLu Interiors, Karen was convinced that the award-winning firm would make a great addition to the team. Along with colleague LuAnne Silvia, ASID, Peck collaborated with the homeowners to enhance the
contemporary architecture of the condo. They weaved together an eclectic tapestry of timeless heirloom pieces, such as Karen’s French armoire and china cabinet, and fashionable finishes like Zebrana veneer, an environmentally friendly mimic of zebrawood. The sleek interior celebrates Karen and Bill’s new city life, while pops of color and the use of more traditional furniture pieces add a subtle nod to those special years across the pond. “I just love it,” Karen says. “We have public spaces that allow us to easily entertain, but we also have private spaces that make this such a comfortable place to live.”

he Victorian at 2405 East Lake of the Isles Parkway has been a charmer since day one. Since 1887, that is, when it was one of the first houses built on Minneapolis’s Lake of the Isles. The urban oasis even lured Josh Hartnett, who purchased the property in 2002. The home’s history and locale made for a combination the acclaimed actor and Minnesota native couldn’t resist. “Everything is right outside your door, yet it’s somehow isolated,” he muses. “It’s fantastic and unusual.” He took full advantage of the prime real estate, often taking to the biking paths literally just outside the front door.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY SPACECRAFTING
Though the star’s affection for the manse remains strong, his busy schedule affords him little time to enjoy all it has to offer. “It’s such a big, grand, beautiful house,” he says. “It needs people living in it and taking care of it.” And that’s exactly what it got. Hartnett entrusted Smith + Roffers of Lakes Sotheby’s International Realty to sell the 5,056-square-foot property. The four-bedroom, four-bathroom residence boasts a gym, wine cellar, billiards room, four-car garage and plenty of character, like original woodwork. And that’s to say nothing of the incredible lake views. In recent times, the mansion has undergone a number of updates, adding modern touches that honor its history. It inspired the 1986 book Dreaming in the Dust, in which
Katherine Chrisman detailed her painstaking renovation of the property. In 2001, it was an American Society of Interior Designers showcase home. Hartnett also commissioned a number of upgrades, including the installation of a gourmet kitchen — his favorite space and the spot where everyone seems to congregate, he says. (As for his culinary chops, the star divulges, “I like to cook — but I’m a terrible cook. It’s fun.”) The actor is far from abandoning his Minnesota roots. Quite the contrary: He’s on the hunt for a smaller Twin Cities residence. Chances are wherever he ends up hanging his hat, he’ll still be able to partake in his beloved pastime, cycling around the City of Lakes. As for 2405 East Lake of the Isles Parkway, the home has found its new keepers.

Winter Wonder A revamped St. Paul condo becomes the perfect base for a reverse snowbird. | BY ELIZABETH FOY LARSEN
F
or most Minnesotans, the definition of the good life includes a winter retreat that doesn’t require a shovel or snow boots. But for Pete Voth, a condo at the foot of St. Paul’s Ramsey Hill is the perfect complement to his beach house on the Delaware shore. “I’m always back in time for the Winter Carnival and Red Bull Crashed Ice,” he says. “I love the history of St. Paul — both the architecture and the homes.” Voth and his late wife, Kim, had owned a condo in the former Children’s Hospital building since 1980 and would visit during time off from their military careers. The Minnesota natives bought an adjoining unit in 1987 and knocked down walls to expand their living space. The fact that the condo felt like two separate homes, with two kitchens and two living rooms, was a challenge they figured they’d fix once they retired.
212
Artful Living | Magazine of the North
Voth contemplated selling after his wife passed away six years ago, but friends and relatives talked him out of it. So after an extensive search, he hired Minneapolis firm Vujovich Design Build to not only make the space a cohesive unit but also to bring in natural light. Voth also wanted it to reflect his fondness for both mid-century modern and industrial design and to showcase his eclectic art collection. Oh, and the home needed to fit within its historic building while not feeling like a complete departure from his Delaware beach house. That challenge appealed to Project Director Lori Balestri, who was responsible for everything from the floor plan to the materials to the furnishings. After researching the hospital’s history — it was a national pioneer in hospitals created specifically for children — she redesigned the unit’s entrance to open to a kitchen and entertaining space roomy enough to accommodate both party

guests and Voth’s baby grand piano. Beyond, two bedrooms and bathrooms (one set is accessible, both for guests and for aging in place) and a cozy study have a more intimate scale. Voth’s wish list proved more challenging. Balestri solved that puzzle when she discovered modern hanging sconces made from what looks like blue sea glass. Once those were in place, the rest of the details came easily. The kitchen island’s soapstone countertop serves as a nod to the fact that Voth’s unit is located in what used to be the hospital’s emergency room. The result? A complete overhaul that hits all the right notes. “Where other firms I considered kept saying they didn’t know if what I wanted would work, Vujovich was excited about the possibilities,” says Voth. “I love everything about it.”

_room with a view was a must. Or, more specifically, several spaces affording incredible vistas of the surrounding 20-plus acres: the stable, the pastures, the horses. The missing element in this pastoral masterpiece? The picture-perfect home. When the owners purchased this western Twin Cities countryside residence in 2013, they had a vision: to create an elegant ranch. They tapped the experts at Erotas Building Corporation to transform the existing Dutch Colonial — beautiful in its own right but just not quite right — into their dream home. “They wanted a ranch — that was always their vision,” says Holly Erotas, co-owner of the award-winning custom building company. “And that vision was instrumental in every decision we made, in every material we selected.”
With the help of architect Meriwether Felt and interior designer Jeremy Wunderlich, the Erotas team remodeled every portion of the house. The owners played a vital role, providing input and setting priorities: outdoor living spaces, room for the kids and grandkids, a fitting backdrop for their extensive art collection. All told, some 3,000 square feet were added to the abode, including a grand room, a cozy sunroom and a master suite upstairs, complete with a private deck overlooking the grounds. The Erotas team also reworked the kitchen, the lower-level rec room and the foyer, which was expanded threefold to accommodate a baby grand piano. The overhaul continued to the great outdoors, where a kitchen, pool, patio, pergola and garden come together to create an alfresco oasis. The owners’ favorite new spot? The splendid screen porch, with its Douglas-fir ceiling and bluestone flooring.

The details were key in capturing the desired aesthetic. “We wanted it to be as authentic as possible — the way it would have been done on a vast Montana ranch,” says company co-owner David Erotas. Case in point: Custom shiplap siding with beveled edges created from a photo of a 1920s lodge. The impressive double-sided wood fireplace separating the living room and great room. A grandiose newel post placed at the bottom of the staircase to balance the expansiveness of the revamped foyer. And of course there are those 50 matching Maple trees lining the drive. These days, the owners take full advantage of Erotas’ property-management program, letting the pros handle everything from routine maintenance to touchup painting to fixing fences. “It gives people peace of mind,” explains Holly, adding that the company provides these services to a dozen clients. “They trust us implicitly, and they don’t have to worry about anything — they know it will be taken care of.” Adding to that sense of security is the surveillance system offering a live feed of the vast property. Other tech upgrades include remote lighting control and an audio/visual system throughout the residence, helping create a home that’s utterly livable without being ostentatious. “Everything is understated and consistent,” Holly muses. “There’s this smooth continuity.” It’s precisely the kind of elegant ease that the owners craved: a space where they can spend time with loved ones, admire the pastoral surrounds and feel perfectly at home on their very own ranch. uilt on a hill overlooking the Minnesota River, this stunning 15,000-square-foot estate was created with an eye toward luxury living and long, leisurely hours spent with loved ones. “This is a home built around family — a place where kids and their friends would love to gather,” says Gary Kraemer, president of John Kraemer & Sons. The homebuilding and remodeling firm, which has been recognized three times as the Builders Association of the Twin Cities’ builder of the year, partnered with Jeff Murphy of Murphy & Co. Design to create the plans for the home.

“The inspiration came from rural French country homes, with restrained yet elegant detailing,” notes Murphy. “The client asked for a home that maximized the views from this incredible site and also mentioned that they loved angles, so we designed a curving floor plan facing the river with an abundance of angles everywhere else. This makes the house very lively and interesting.” The exterior is largely stucco, with stone parapets along the roof and an integrated formal garden, created by Topo, LLC, that evokes the feel of legendary estates. There’s an outdoor pool, spa and fireplace as well as a rooftop deck with its own fireplace. (Needless to say, the views from that spot are magnificent.) Inside, Kraemer and Manor House Interiors paid special attention to the kitchen, a favorite gathering spot. The detailing here goes on and on, from floor-to-ceiling tile to decorative brackets under the cabinets. The firm’s cabinetry design team spent a lot of time learning about the owners as they strategized the custom cabinetry throughout the home. “This was a great process with wonderful chemistry between the homeowner and the team,” notes Vice President John Kraemer. “Learning about the homeowner and every last detail — all the way down to how they like to hang their belts — is part of our process. It’s how you create a well-loved, perfectly tailored home.”

Autumn’s Bounty In Wisconsin, cranberries are king. |
234
Artful Living | Magazine of the North
BY KATE NELSON
E
ach morning of cranberry harvest, nearly two million gallons of water (six acre-feet, to be exact) flood across a small sector of the vast marshes that lie near Tomah, Wisconsin. The crimson fruit floats to the liquid’s surface, buoyed by its air-filled internal chambers. Slow-moving machinery plucks the cranberries from their vines and deposits them into small boats. The delicate fruit is then trucked to Habelman Bros. headquarters, where it is rinsed, sorted and stored at a precise 38 degrees. There it sits until an order is placed, sending the fresh fruit across the country or globe. The Habelman family has been in the business of cranberries since 1907, when Edward Habelman started a modest enterprise on 13 acres. It has been handed down from generation to generation, with great grandson Ray now at the helm of what has become the world’s largest fresh cranberry grower and packer. For six weeks starting in mid September, the fruit spread across the company’s 670 acres is harvested. Procuring the produce — up to 15 million cranberries depending on the success of the growing season — makes for long, laborious days involving some 160 people. Unpredictable autumn weather poses a particular challenge as temperatures can dip near freezing come late fall. The water required to keep the crops healthy throughout the year (the marshes are flooded in the winter to protect the vulnerable buds and again in the spring to help with pest control) resides in the company’s more than 250 acres of reservoirs. Otherwise, the cranberries tend to be lowmaintenance until autumn nears. “We get nervous as the days get shorter,” explains Ray. “It means it’s getting close to crunch time.” But it certainly is a labor of love. Several Habelman employees have been on the payroll for 30-plus years, and 97-year-old Uncle Bob (Ray’s great uncle) has held tenure for more than eight decades. These days, he spends less time working the marshes and more time motivating the staff and handling behind-the-scenes work. “These people have dedicated their lives to the cranberry industry,” says Ray. “We’ve been quite lucky.” The fourth generation grower has been on board since 1997 and was named CEO in 2008. He lives on the original marsh where more than a century ago his great grandfather embarked on this adventure. As for his title? Ray doesn’t take it very seriously: “At the end of the day, I’m just a cranberry grower.”

Gone Fishing Bowing to the silver king of Southwest Florida. | BY STEPHEN DUPONT

T
he line began to scream as the long, silver fish started to make another run. Every muscle in my body ached. My legs shook. Then I felt that sudden rise in the line that could mean only one thing: The fish was about to jump again. “Bow now!” screamed the well-tanned captain, while my buddy, Shorty, looked on. The mighty fish’s head shook as its six-foot-long body shot out of the turquoise water. It came down with a crash and dove again. In Minnesota, we love to brag about our world-class walleyes, feisty smallmouths and monster muskies. But there’s another fish that belongs on every angler’s bucket list — one you won’t find in Lake Minnetonka or Mille Lacs. The musky may be the fish of 10,000 casts, but the tarpon is the fish of 30 seconds. That’s because, ounce for ounce, there may be no other fish in North America that sets the adrenaline rushing through your veins faster than the silver king. Everything you know about angling — watching for a strike, reeling in the slack, setting the hook, maintaining the proper tension on the line — must come together
238
Artful Living | Magazine of the North
within 30 seconds of a tarpon hitting your bait if you want a chance to wrestle with one of these silvery monsters. Some five to eight feet long and anywhere from 50 to 200 pounds, these beasts make their annual migration along Florida’s Gulf Coast. This pilgrimage culminates along the length of beach that stretches from the Sanibel Island Lighthouse to Captiva Island and on to Boca Grande, where thousands of tarpon come together in search of a mate before heading out to deeper water to spawn. This is also where silver-king junkies come together April through June in hopes of hooking a worthy opponent. If you can hang on for the fight — lasting anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour — you’ll understand why the trek to Captiva Island is as much a near-religious experience as heading up north for walleye opener. Your day will start at McCarthy’s Marina. As the sun slowly rises, lighting up Pine Island Sound, warm salt air fills your lungs. You will be fishing from an 18-foot-long fiberglass boat fitted with a 100-horsepower engine. Save for the center console and the platform
PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHEN DUPONT AND RON BOUDREAUX
on the back, it’s not much different from one of those fancy bass boats often spotted on Prior Lake or Forest Lake. There are some 80 tarpon guides who work the waters from Fort Myers to Naples. Two of the very best are Ozzie Lessinger and Randall Marsh. They’re usually booked a year out, and the majority of their clients are repeats, many from Minnesota and other parts of the North. They’re often the first on the water, which is one of the secrets to landing a trophy tarpon. From the moment you step onto the boat, the hunt is on. The captain’s eyes are fixated on the water’s surface, like a hawk searching for prey. You’ll spend the day looking for the telltale sign of tarpon on the move: a long, green luminescent hump. Maybe you’ll see two or three surfacing for a gulp of air or a small group going round and round in a daisy chain. As you mark the lines where the fish are heading along the beach, you’ll pinpoint the ideal spot to throw out a circle hook baited with a threadfin or small crab. And then you’ll wait for all hell to break loose. There will be little sitting. Your arms and wrists will begin to ache from holding an eight-foot-long fishing rod outfitted with a large, spinning reel spooled with 80-pound test braided line. The sun will beat down on you. Your view of blue sky meeting the horizon of the emerald-green water will remind you of a Mark Rothko painting. And if you’re lucky, you’ll see your float go down and hear the shouts of the captain: “Reel, reel, reel!”
If You Go Getting There: Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines and Sun Country Airlines offer nonstop flights to Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW). Rent a car for the 38-mile drive to Captiva Island.
When to Go: May through June is prime time. What to Pack: A hat, polarized sunglasses and sunscreen are musts. Bring light shirts and pants as well as Buff tubular head- and neckwear. Pack a lunch, snacks and beverages for the day.
Where to Stay: On Captiva Island, consider South Seas Island Resort or ’Tween Waters Inn Island Resort & Spa. There are numerous resorts on Sanibel Island. Who to Hire: Enlist Captain Ozzie Lessinger of Sanibel Fishing Charters (fishsanibelcaptiva.com) or Captain Randall Marsh of Florida Outdoor Experience (floridaoutdoorexperience.com).
What to Expect: A Florida fishing license is not necessary if you work with a professional guide, who will typically charge $600 to $750 a day during prime season. If you catch a fish, it’s customary to tip at least 20 percent.

Bird Man Carrol Henderson has taken Minnesota’s wildlife under his wing. | BY KATE NELSON
C
arrol Henderson has had a fascination with birds since the very beginning. He recalls the day back in 1951 when his father showed him a nest of killdeer chicks near their family farm in Zearing, Iowa, thus igniting his interest. Later in his childhood, he took up hunting and trapping — hobbies that, perhaps counterintuitively, fostered his love for animals. “Birding was not something I even knew existed at that time,” he recalls. “It was hunting and trapping that really fostered my early interest in the outdoors — hunting rabbits, squirrels and pheasants, and trapping muskrats on the creek that ran through our farm. For a lot of people in my generation, that’s how it happened. There was no such thing as bird watching.” And yet, today, Henderson may be one of the activity’s most passionate advocates here in the North. He’s spent 38 of his 69 years heading up the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ Nongame Wildlife Program — since its inception, in fact. That first year, the budget was a mere $25,000, including Henderson’s salary and expenses. That number has since increased exponentially, thanks in

large part to a 1980 state law allowing Minnesotans to make donations through the so-called Chickadee Checkoff line on income-tax forms (last year, it accounted for just under $900,000). In those nearly four decades, Henderson has penned 13 books (five with the DNR that together have sold some 300,000 copies, with all royalties supporting the program). He’s both pioneered and provided support on countless initiatives, such as establishing a bird-watching trail spanning across the state and into Canada. And he’s become one of the area’s preeminent authorities on all things birds. His proudest accomplishment? Revitalizing Minnesota’s trumpeter swan population — a species that had nearly disappeared from the state. In a program he designed, Henderson brought back 150 eggs from Alaska over three years in the mid eighties. He and his colleagues worked closely with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to identify 22 lakeside nests from which to procure the specimen. They employed a floatplane to take them from site to site, where they collected the eggs and placed them in suitcases outfitted with special Styrofoam packers, fans and rubber

hot-water bottles for the long journey home. (Henderson recalls that the Northwest Airlines airplane coffee pot came in handy when it came time to change out that water every few hours.) Upon arriving in the North Star state, the eggs were incubated for one week before the hatching began. Henderson and his team ultimately released 250 trumpeter swans — and then waited to see what would happen. The program proved to be a success: Within a decade, the birds were breeding and thriving. Earlier this year, an aerial survey revealed a robust population of 17,000. He’d be remiss, Henderson says, to overlook his role in this triumph, but he is equally proud of another effort: “It’s really important to recruit people — both adults and children — into conservation,” he says. To that end, he and his wife have been leading international bird-watching tours for nearly three decades. In the coming year, they’ll take small groups to destinations including Costa Rica, Cuba and Peru. But it’s birding here in the North that really gets him excited. “What makes this a fascinating area is that we’re at the point of convergence
of three major North American biomes: prairie grassland, hardwood forest and boreal forest,” Henderson explains. “You can see a huge variety of bird life from all three of these.” Among his favorite spots? Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge in northwestern Minnesota, Carlos Avery State Wildlife Management Area near Forest Lake and Swan Park in Monticello — where, come December, hundreds of trumpeter swans can be seen on the Mississippi River. From time to time, he also gets back to his native Iowa, where he and his siblings still own 66 acres of farmland, a third of which is now part of the Conservation Reserve Program. That appreciation for the outdoors and the wildlife it sustains is something Henderson hopes will be a lasting part of his legacy when he eventually retires (“No one has pinned down when — I’m having too much fun,” he quips). And he thinks bird watching can be a big part of it: “It’s easy to do, fun to do and can be done anywhere, whether you’re 5 or 95,” he says. “And the more people expose others, the more it catches on. They might not even know they’re bird watchers until they give it a try.”

hether or not you believe in Minnesota Nice, there’s no doubt that stereotypes characterize us as a friendly, courteous and potentially gullible people. There may be passive-aggressive antagonism waiting to pounce just around the corner, but for all intents and purposes, Minnesota Nice is alive and thriving. History, however, has proven time and time again that the propensity for the con is intrinsic to mankind. “It speaks well for human nature that men can be swindled,” muses Lewis H. That sentiment is of import in an age when deception is the norm and gullibility is a liability. He goes on to explain that “the American genius for the artful dodge in its all-but-infinite variety — the sales pitch, the subprime loan, the housing bubble, the campaign promise — is firmly rooted in the country’s founding.” The very nature of America’s birth indicated the deterioration of established societal restraints. Instead, we became a gritty lot of hustlers and deceivers. Even in Minnesota, where nice reigns supreme, fraudsters lurk in our own backyard. From Ponzi schemes to embezzlement to luxury jewelry scams, the North Star state has seen its fair share of cons.
CON FRAUDULENT FOSHAY
A FAMILY AFFAIR
MONEY MAESTRO
As Minnesota’s first skyscraper, the Foshay Tower fills Minneapolitans with a sense of pride and ownership. Few of them realize, however, that a swindler is to thank for the beloved landmark. Utilities magnate Wilbur B. Foshay was the 1920s iteration of Charles Ponzi: In 1932, he was convicted of conducting a pyramid scheme with his own stock. At one point during his trial, he claimed he was colorblind to explain unusual marks in his accounting books. “In the red” and “in the black” were marked by symbols rather than colors. In actuality, the icons indicated which entries were artificially inflated. Foshay eventually was convicted but received a reduced sentence thanks to a pardon by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Those mourning at Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis may have paused when authorities removed an urn from a mausoleum earlier this year. The supposed ashes belonged to Igor Vorotinov, who was in actuality alive and well and residing in Ukraine under an assumed identity with a hearty helping of life-insurance money. He, ex-wife Irina and son Alkon had schemed to fake his death back in 2011. Irina traveled to Moldova, allegedly identified her ex-husband’s body and filed a claim with Mutual of Omaha for $2 million. Together, Irina and Alkon transferred $1.5 million to overseas accounts. In June, the entire family was charged in federal court with mail fraud; Irina also was charged with money laundering.
In July, Dennis Charles Helmer was sentenced to 150 months in federal prison followed by three years supervised release and was forced to pay $1,329,873.25 in restitution. His crime? Receiving cash, coins and precious metals from geriatric clients sending in their belongings to his business — and subsequently using the valuables to pay his own bills. According to court documents, Helmer targeted the elderly because they were particularly vulnerable; his victims included a 79-year-old stroke victim, a legally blind octogenarian and a 99-year-old suffering from dementia.

Puppy Love Meet the humans behind Dogs of Instagram. | BY KATE NELSON

T
he Minneapolis couple behind the social-media sensation that is Dogs of Instagram has cornered the market on online canine cuteness. And it’s not hard to see why the prolific account has garnered the attention of some two million followers from across the globe. Plainly put, it offers a much-needed daily dose of dog. Twenty-somethings Ahmed El Shourbagy and Ashley Paguyo El Shourbagy are dynamic. They’re energetic. They’re nose-to-the-grindstone wunderkinds. They’re newlyweds (as of August). And they were just as surprised — happily — that their pet project turned into such a success. Ahmed launched Dogs of Instagram back in 2011 largely in response to a trend he noticed whenever he logged on: The most popular posts were images of cute canines. He too was partaking, posting photos of his pug/Boston terrier mix, Lucy. At that time he had, as he puts it, “a casual but curious interest in social media” and decided to create a curated, niche account dedicated to dogs. The strategy was simple: Solicit photos of pooches and post the best ones. The submissions came pouring in, as did the followers. By day 10, there were a thousand devotees. By day 40, there were 10,000 of them. “I had no idea it was going to take off so fast,” says Ahmed. He was spending his days crunching numbers at Target and his nights sifting through photos to find those that met his standards for clarity, composition, lighting, variety and safety (no dogs in potentially dangerous situations, in other words). It was right around that day 10 mark when he met Ashley, a Jill of all trades who was working for a tech startup. She was interested in his Instagram venture but not yet involved. Fast-forward to later that year, when the account had tens of thousands of followers and Ahmed — who they both admit is a serial entrepreneur — lost interest. The account sat dormant for a solid six months; meanwhile, the submissions and the followers kept coming. “I basically begged him to turn over the keys to the kingdom and let me get through the inbox and start uploading content again,”
says Ashley. Among those 3,000 unviewed submissions? A photo of Instagram CEO and cofounder Kevin Systrom’s mom’s beloved golden retriever — a bone thrown if ever there were one. Ashley’s involvement reignited Ahmed’s interest, and the two took a spaghetti-strategy approach, trying on different ideas and initiatives for size. The account ultimately garnered the attention of some big players in the big business of dogs — Purina, BarkBox and the like — allowing its founders to monetize the venture via native advertising. All the while, the humans behind Dogs of Instagram remained anonymous. It wasn’t until a Star Tribune article about the duo hit newsstands in April 2014 that even close friends knew that Ahmed and Ashley were the ones behind the curtain. It was later that year that the twosome launched Lucy & Co., a curated online shop offering high-quality, high-design dog wares — another idea that took its inspiration from the couple’s pooch. The luxe leather leashes and collars, small-batch ceramic bowls, and handmade, all-natural treats are the result of thoughtful collaborations with handpicked makers. “Nobody needs anything from Lucy & Co.,” says Ashley. “They buy our products because they bring delight into their lives.” As of this year, Ahmed and Ashley are all in — all dogs, all the time. It’s an odd occupation for someone who grew up afraid of the creatures. (In Ahmed’s native Egypt, they are rarely pets.) Lucy, who they lovingly describe as a gremlin, transformed him into the crazy dog person he is today when he had the sudden impulse to adopt her in 2009. All told, the duo owes a lot to their four-legged mascot and muse. “Lucy has taught us how to be a family and how to work together,” says Ashley. As for the road ahead, the couple has no plans for slowing down any time soon. Up next: Private-label Lucy & Co. goods that will launch in time for the holidays. A coffee-table tome due out next year that offers up favorite photos from the first four years of Dogs of Instagram. And after that? As Ashley explains, “We don’t know what the long-term plan is, but we really enjoy doing it — and we enjoy doing it together.”

Surviving Suburbia A lifelong urbanite takes up residence outside his comfort zone. | BY DAVID MAHONEY
I
_guess I had it coming. A few months ago, my wife and I went to hear a friend’s band play at a cafe in Northeast Minneapolis, and in the middle of the first set, our friend surprised us by dedicating the next song to us. We clapped enthusiastically as the band struck up the opening chords. Our enthusiasm quickly waned, however, as we realized that the song was a satirical send-up of a couple of disgruntled city folk moving to the suburbs. Though it now seems comical, as it was clearly intended to be, the tribute struck a raw nerve that night. After a lifetime of urban dwelling — during which I had done my fair share of suburb bashing —we had just a few weeks earlier done the unthinkable: moved out beyond the city limits. That wasn’t our original plan. We were looking to downsize as both our kids are away at college and don’t seem inclined to return home anytime soon. But at a time when people we knew were moving into condos in the heart of the city, we had the opposite impulse. We wanted a little more breathing room. We started looking around the fringes of the city, where there were relatively large lots by city standards. But the houses we liked were too expensive, and ones we could afford all had drawbacks. So when I stumbled across a listing in Hopkins that looked promising, I decided to check it out even though it was several miles past our geographical outer limit. Turning off the main road onto the little lane leading into the neighborhood, I was amazed by the forest-like setting I suddenly found myself in. And when I saw the cottage-like house set deep back on its wooded lot, I was hooked. Less than two months later, we had moved in. I’ll admit that I was a little defensive about my suburban flight at first. I insisted it was more like a move to the country than to the soulless suburbs. What’s more, I’d point out, Hopkins is really a small town that existed long before newer, more manicured suburbs engulfed it. In fact, its original name was West Minneapolis, I’d go on, and only changed to Hopkins after locals got tired of explaining that was only the name on the train station because Harley Hopkins granted the railroad a right of way through his land.

Before long, though, I began to realize that my defensive posture was totally unnecessary. My city-bred insecurity turned out to be misguided: There was, I learned, a “there” out there. Between the shopping malls and country clubs was a place with deep roots in natural and human history. Just down the road from our new home we found a park partially taken up by well-tended baseball diamonds and other athletic facilities not of particular interest to a couple of middle-aged empty nesters. But the greater part of the park, we discovered on an exploratory walk with our dog, was given over to an idyllic tapestry of forest and wetlands, threaded by a swift-flowing creek that our trail crossed on a gracefully arched wooden bridge. On a later trek through the park, I followed our dog down a narrow trail through the woods that led us along what appeared to be a raised roadbed paralleling the creek. Online research revealed that this narrow rise was the remains of a defunct railroad spur that served a long-gone gristmill. Around the same time, I met a neighbor who informed me that our street was once the right of way for the same rail line. In fact, he said, it took its name from the railway company that owned it. Working in my new home office, I quickly learned to appreciate the lack of urban distractions, though my bouts of attention deficit found other outlets. Through the window above my desk, I could keep tabs on the comings and goings of the local fauna. An albino squirrel made regular appearances. A posse of turkeys strutted by from time to time. A deer would occasionally wander across our property. One day, a coyote came racing by with a huge black lab in hot pursuit. Ten minutes later, the coyote calmly came loping back, having given the dog the slip. Admittedly, getting just about anywhere requires getting into a car. But the truth is, like many Minneapolitans, I drove most places when I lived in the city. And anyways, I find I’m happier just staying put, sitting on the screen porch, listening to the crickets chirp or a train rumbling by. It may not be exciting, but it works just fine for me.
