FROM THE EDITORS Hayley Saunders: It might sound cliché, but there’s truly no place like home. That’s why hoteliers across the country are trying to capture that warm residential feel at their boutique properties. Although we once tried to emulate the excitement of faraway places in our own abodes, now that sentiment has been turned on its head: We want to take the creature comforts of home with us on the go. Jennifer Blaise Kramer expertly explores this movement in our feature story, “Reviving the American Inn.” (page 114) Kate Nelson: Speaking of creature comforts, our houses are going to the dogs — quite literally. A spike in pet adoptions during the pandemic propelled the barkitecture trend to new heights (page 194). Plus we’re bringing our favorite recreational amenities (hello, pickleball!) to our own backyards (page 46). All of this reflects the ever-evolving nature of the home industry, as captured in our talent showcase on contemporary design, “Windows on Talent” (page 202). HS: Of course, summer is a time to get outside. In need of some gardening inspo? Look no further than Madame Ganna Walska’s Lotusland in Montecito, California (page 213). If you’re yearning to bring the great outdoors in, our resident outdoorswoman Laura Schara has you covered with her top tips (page 190). And those looking to explore farther afield should consider buying up real estate in our expert-picked list of top international second home destinations (page 88). KN: If it’s dream homes you’re after, you’re in luck. Charles Stinson designed an indoor/outdoor stunner (page 162). Tea2 Architects headed to Colorado to bring one couple’s Rocky Mountain vision to life (page 184). And David Strand gave a Minnesota lakeside cabin an uber modern aesthetic (page 176). After all, up north is a state of mind and entirely what you make of it. Welcome to summer.

Happy reading,

THE MAGAZINE On the Cover The perfectly imperfect Moroccan tile adorning our summer issue cover brings to mind inspired interiors, covetable courtyards and hospitable homes that beckon us to linger a bit longer. International artist and photographer Lika Ramati, who captured this artisan creation, explains that “art is a way of expressing truth, transforming energy into form and color.” And oh, what phenomenally energetic color this powerful monochromatic image offers, reminiscent of favorite water-soaked summer days. “My artistic language has no limits, from street art to interior design to international exhibitions,” says Ramati, whose work has been featured the world over, from New York City to Paris to Tel Aviv.

GAME CHANGER A LOOK AT THE LATEST AT-HOME RECREATION TRENDS. B Y M A R G U E R I T E VA N D E R F O R D I L L U S T R AT I O N B Y M I C H A E L I V E R J A C O B S E N

READY TO BECOME THE TALK OF THE TOWN? YOU’LL

impress neighbors and make new friends by joining in the pickleball craze — with a bespoke backyard court, that is. Hungry to replace country club visits and destination adventures in recent years, we’ve been clamoring for creative ways to bring our favored modes of recreation home. Today, these three experiential amenities are the new gold standard for homeowners intent on weaving pleasure into their everyday lives. Play on.

Pickleball Courts

Pickleball is the rapidly rising favorite of America’s elite, who are addicted to the game’s low-key combination of tennis, badminton and Ping-Pong. Famous fanatics like Brené Brown, Leonardo DiCaprio and even the Kardashians regularly partake, while others have opted to bring the fun to their own backyard. Rumor has it the Bush family has an at-home pickleball court, as do Washington power couple Greta Van Susteren and John Coale. What makes the sport so appealing? For starters, you don’t need any equipment besides a ball, paddles and some motivation. And because the court is a petite 20 by 44 feet, no intense sprinting is required. The close proximity between players means games can be more social without intense physical strain or technical knowhow. Backyard courts let you get in on the game while maximizing real estate value, hence why construction firms have seen a growing request for the recreation design element du jour. For the leisure player more interested in documenting for Instagram than achieving athletic excellence, brands from Anthropologie to Maisonette are ready to equip you with ultra sleek accessories, like lightweight honeycomb polymer paddles in gold ombre or white marble. Once you’ve tried your hand at this addictive sport, don’t be surprised if you find yourself plotting out the ideal spot for a court of your own.

Bouldering Walls

In lieu of travel to faraway cliffs or even local rock-climbing gyms, amateurs and rock ninjas alike have been transforming garages, rec rooms and even bedrooms into personal bouldering zones. The

adrenaline-boosting, cardio-strengthening blast of rock climbing has long attracted celebrity devotees from Jimmy Chin to Jason Momoa. The newfound luxury — and thrill — of scaling your own walls, however, has brought renewed attention to the sport. Gone are the days of the clunky eyesore that was the nineties-era rock wall. Instead, architects and builders are crafting installations that double as both exercise equipment and high art. Avantgarde sustainable fashion designer Nicole McLaughlin’s 10-foot wall, designed by Utah-based Grasshopper, “operates as both an unconventional art piece and a part-time stress reliever,” letting her clear her mind and chase a quick sweat. The company’s stateof-the-art adjustable walls use a hydraulic pulley system to shift angles for constant challenge, with an elegant sculptural design that blends seamlessly into a small-scale environment. Families with children will dig California designer Regan Baker’s 8.5-foot wall situated in a Menlo Park abode. It boasts brightly colored handholds that can be rearranged for different difficulty levels or adjusted to match interior color schemes. For those wanting to get out of the house, perhaps the answer is actually to consider going up.

Cocktail Pools

Take one look at the luxury estates hitting the global market, and you’ll notice a common trend. Nestled in between the alfresco sport courts, conversation fire pits and pro-level pizza ovens is the cocktail pool, a combination spa/pool that can function as either an oversize Jacuzzi or a miniature lap pool, typically clocking in around 12 by 14 feet. Enviable features include jets, heaters, benches, wave makers, cascading waterfalls and even solar-heating panels for a sustainable edge. HGTV personality Tarek El Moussa and Selling Sunset star Heather Rae El Moussa note that their “spool” (spa plus pool — another common nickname) lets them heat things up to hottub temperature for the kids and, when combined with powerful directional jets, also stands in as a lap pool for aerobic exercise. For those seeking to maximize time, space and elegance, cocktail pools are truly a game changer.

have remained consistent, says Colón. He explains that the IAIA — as well as tribal groups across the country — is turning to contemporary art to develop future leaders to create an era of self-determination for Indigenous peoples. They’re doing so through critical thinking about a community’s presence via creative expression and so-called survivance: rejecting the romanticized images of Native peoples as victims and turning disenfranchisement on its ear, at once contemporizing cultural designs and transforming art into activism. Colón, like Peone, believes that using the power of contemporary art to tell their own narrative is a new freedom for Native peoples. “These are new and sustainable practices — preservation and perpetuation of Indigenous communities,” he asserts. Is a renaissance afoot? “I sure hope so,” says Santa Clara Pueblo mixed-media artist Rose B. Simpson, whose work — like her stunning 1985 Chevy El Camino lowrider, “Maria” — was part of a groundbreaking traveling exhibition centered around Native women artists, Hearts of Our People, seen in museums across the country. She explains that her sculptural creations are meant to encourage a healing journey of “inward navigation” through social and cultural realms. “A lot of my work is about that deep dive into internal awareness,” shares Simpson, who’s now part of a movement that’s been happening long before the 21st century. She believes cultural representation through creative storytelling offers Native peoples the opportunity to create a more hopeful future and to challenge the idea of dependency on others to regain their power. “My daughter’s future is in a state of her own strength — something we’ve never known,” she says passionately. “It’s exciting to see how future generations can navigate more intentionally. Learning how to navigate their internal awareness puts a lot of power in young people. It’s a level of awareness that increases our voice in the world.” But then Simpson pauses. Her pragmatism surfaces. After all, a renaissance takes great effort. “We have more work to do,” she underscores.

schedules, vendors, breathtaking artwork and logistics for getting more than 115,000 worldwide visitors through the winding streets of Santa Fe, New Mexico. She’s counting down the days until the centennial anniversary of the legendary Santa Fe Indian Market, the largest and most prestigious such event in the country. It’s a job few could manage. But Peone — a finance whiz who’s known for rebuilding tribal bank accounts — says her role as executive director of the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts is a calling. “An awakening is happening,” she asserts. “People think the market is just about art, but it’s also about politics.” Peone points to the emergence of contemporary artists like Cara Romero, a Chemehuevi fine art photographer who uses digital images to highlight the legacy of Indigenous people. Or Cannupa Hanska Luger, whose 2018 installation of thousands of handmade clay beads represented victims of gender violence. And Peone says hosted online roundtables give creatives a platform to discuss the issues that influence their work: social justice, Native rights, voter engagement and the like. More than simply an awakening, Indigenous communities are igniting at a time when the rest of the world seems to be imploding. Indeed, contemporary art is proving not only to be an increasingly important economic engine for tribal groups but also an opportunity for artists to become prominent activists who can bring about meaningful change. “It’s an unprecedented era now to share our true selves with the world,” explains Felipe Colón, academic dean at the Institute of American Indian Arts, where an enrollment surge has created the largest student body in the school’s 60-year history. Native educators believe decolonizing studies gives strength to cultural storytelling, creating a legacy of leaders from the past and blending those practices with what’s being taught today. “There’s a confluence of things happening,” Colón notes. “With the recent Hollywood discovery of TV shows like Reservation Dogs and Rutherford Falls, people feel like they can relate to the traumas of Indigenous people now. There’s a feeling that the injustices suffered by Native people — water protection, environmental issues and more — are traumas now centered in the contemporary experience. This is a big moment of resonance.” While the world is in flux, Indigenous communities

THEY WERE THE 1970S EUROPEAN IT COUPLE, ADMIRED

for their jet-set taste in both design and fashion. He was François Catroux, the late legendary Algerian-born interior designer beloved by clients like Guy de Rothschild and Diane von Furstenberg. She is septuagenarian Betty Catroux, the cool, lanky Parisienne muse of Yves Saint Laurent who is celebrated to this day for her androgynous style. Earlier this year, Sotheby’s auctioned off art and furnishings from the duo’s apartment in the Palais Maeterlinck overlooking the French Riviera. It’s here that the designer indulged his eclectic sense of style, blending time-honored antiques with contemporary pieces in a light-filled flat that felt elegant, dreamy and a touch futuristic. With more than 100 items up for sale, it was a chance to pull back the curtain on how this very private couple lived and what cherished objects they collected over the years. Style-loving bidders from around the world took part in the much anticipated auction, which was broadcast live online from Paris and brought in more than €2.5 million. One of the most coveted lots, a pair of Ron Arad patinated steel chairs that set the tone in the mod apartment, sold for €81,900. Dubbed “After Spring” and “Before Summer,” the sleek 1992 chaise lounges epitomize the sculptural aesthetic François favored. Meanwhile, a very colorful and playful console designed in 1988 by Ettore Sottsass attracted global attention and far surpassed early estimates with a final price tag of €28,980. Known for his movie star good looks and his eye for fast sports cars, François was an adventurous collector who traveled the globe, curating his own private art collection. One of his favorite pieces was a liquitex and graphite work on paper by Tom Wesselmann entitled “Bedroom blonde with purple pillow” (1984). Garnering strong interest, the painting sold for €351,300, more than twice the anticipated price. Simple biomorphic shapes seemed to fascinate the designer, an aesthetic he admired in a pair of Lucio Fontana polished brass sculptures, “Concetto Spaziale, Natura” (1967). With international interest, the works sold for €252,000. One of the most personal items wasn’t a contemporary piece but rather an antique François kept throughout his life. The 12-panel lacquered Chinese Coromandel screen dates from the 18th to 19th century and stayed with the couple through various homes. In spirited bidding, the massive screen sold for €47,880, making it one of the most anticipated lots of the day. Also of note, a lacquered metal console François designed himself in 1967 fetched an unexpected €26,460. François wanted to live out his final days in this airy abode in Nice. But as the project was nearing completion, he became ill. So sadly the couple spent only a few nights in their dream home by the sea. In the end, this artfully appointed apartment would become his final project — a lasting testament to a life of style, elegance and Riviera glamour.

Artful Living

HOW WE DESIGN OUR HOMES IS IMMENSELY REVEALING. A LIVING ROOM TELLS ALL:

what we need, how we see ourselves, how we welcome guests. Interior design, in many ways, shares a lot in common with dressing — chiefly, the balance between formality and comfort. One person’s modernist masterpiece leaves a friend asking, Am I supposed to sit on that? What I like about interiors I also like about clothes. They should be personal, pay respect to good traditions, feel lived-in, and be well-appointed but not too fussy. If I meet a man who has a well-worn brown velvet couch, I know he and I have a lot to talk about. I should add that my mother, who lives in Minneapolis, is a very talented professional interior designer. My father, also talented, might be considered an enthusiastic amateur interior designer. This means they agree on many things and disagree on a few. Mostly this has to do with the clinical definition of the term “clutter.” My father is a great book stacker — there’s no reason, in his view, that the number of books a house can hold should be dictated by the amount of available shelf space (especially when that shelf space filled up a decade ago). Since I live in New York City where space is at a premium, I don’t have the luxury of extra anything. Well, that’s not exactly true. The acquisitive gene has passed from my parents to me, which is why my library is so large it’s currently in storage. My former apartment certainly had a lived-in feeling. I compared it to an English arts club, if the members stopped paying their dues. The rugs (there were many) were worn out and a few had holes in them, but I didn’t mind. I inherited my mother’s love of mixing texture and pattern. I still like a fairly united sensibility: dark brown wood, old leather, deep colored rugs. So club chairs draped with flannel blankets, textiles and striped pillows. All this arranged in a way that’s inviting. I finally bought a couch a few years ago — these things take time! — from John Derian so I can stretch out and take a nap in style. The same way it’s good to have a tailor, it’s good to have an antiques dealer. I visit the wonderful Melanie Bendavid at her home in the Catskills for rustic furniture and ceramics. Meanwhile, my mom frequents Robert Riesberg in the Twin Cities for serious antiques worthy of an English salon. My girlfriend and I recently moved, which is always a fraught experience, especially for people who do not practice any of Marie Kondo’s principles. Our current apartment (just down the block from the old one) mercifully has more space. To make it ours, we decided to paint the walls. We wanted to do this right, so I spoke to a color consultant from Farrow & Ball. It was one of the most illuminating conversations I can remember. He knew what shades of white were flattering in what light and how they could be paired with other colors. The same way not all white shirts are the same, not all white paint is the same. We settled on Off-White, which is one of their oldest colors — a chalky neutral that’s soft and warm throughout the day (and not white at all). The other stroke of genius was to paint the doors and the baseboards Mouse’s Back, a lovely gray brown. In short, he knew a lot. And I realized how little I knew. This was akin to seeing a tailor: You know what you like, but you don’t always know why. What I learned from our friendly consultant was a whole world of possibilities and relationships. How colors are affected by natural light and change throughout the day. Now the apartment feels as though it belongs to an English couple who just came back from Florence, which makes sense because I love Englishmen who try to dress like Italians. I still believe in some basic principles. A room shouldn’t feel like a museum. If you aren’t at ease in your own home, that’s far from ideal. Similarly, you shouldn’t wear clothes that don’t make you feel like yourself. (And if you don’t feel like yourself in a tuxedo, wear it in private until you do.) Some advice for the male readers: If you have any posters from the good old days — of your beloved team (go Vikings!), your favorite band or that cherished Martin Scorsese film — it’s time to retire those. You’re no longer living in a quad on campus. On that note, donate your black leather furniture to a charitable organization. And don’t buy the largest TV you can afford; your home is not a sports bar. But when it comes to art, books, antiques, ceramics and textiles, be not afraid. These are some of life’s great pleasures. Like all things worth doing, learning about them takes time. Interior design, like personal style, is part of the road toward self-knowledge and expression. Wherever you are on the journey, that’s a good place to be. A Minnesotan turned New Yorker, David Coggins is the author of the New York Times bestseller Men and Style, and writes a style column for Artful Living.

THERE’S A BIT OF LA DOLCE VITA HAPPENING IN MINNEAPOLIS’S

North Loop neighborhood. Fueled by community and ingenuity, destination retailer Martin Patrick 3 and acclaimed chef Jamie Malone came together earlier this year to celebrate the sweet life. The immersive experience inside her new dining studio, Petite Atelier, included an exquisite tasting menu with wine pairings by sommelier Bill Summerville, cocktails from 3leche, a fashion show, and a stunning tablescape featuring maximalist Italian brand La DoubleJ. The opulent occasion, dubbed A Dinner with La DoubleJ, was the culmination of years of building relationships. Malone has long been an MP3 client, and their natural rapport led to a creative culinary collaboration during the height of the pandemic. Her popular Keep It Grand kits — fine-dining takeout as an offshoot of her now-shuttered eatery — were accompanied by luxe MP3-curated home pairings, such as bar-cart essentials. (This concept still exists as Weekender with its delightful tag line, “Feed your inner bon vivant.”) Last spring, Malone approached MP3 about her newest concept, Petite Atelier, situated just a block from the beloved boutique. She tapped the team to consult on interior design and tabletop picks, ultimately opting for La DoubleJ, a high-end homewares brand known for its bold colors and pattern-infused pieces. “I think Martin Patrick 3 is one of the best stores in the country, and I’m delighted to be able to do anything together,” Malone exclaims. “MP3 brings so much elegance, and La DoubleJ brings whimsy and happiness.” MP3 Marketing Director Anthony Serino says the spectacular lifestyle soiree was a natural next step as both brands not only survived but thrived during rocky times. “I think people are starved for social

72

Artful Living

interaction and fun,” he explains. “Being able to meld these brands and communities creates this incredibly wonderful atmosphere that allows people to connect authentically. What the La DoubleJ brand stands behind — “Live like an Italian” — plays into a bold, beautiful, colorful lifestyle experience, which is something we live and breathe with our community.” That verve echoes the vibrancy of the North Loop neighborhood. “Every week, something new and exciting is popping up here, and with it, this neighborhood continues to create these magnificent common outdoor spaces to congregate,” Serino explains. “It feels very lively and dynamic. I’m so excited because, as a community, we need it.” The evening’s tasting menu featured delectable dishes like pike quenelles de brochet, black truffle and veal-stuffed quail, and lemon ricotta cake with chantilly and spiced preserved pears — all served to guests seated around one long table for a true communal experience. “This event was right in line with Jamie’s vision for the dining studio, creating an inventive culinary experience with the feeling that you’re at a private dinner party,” Serino says. Not unlike the dining experience MP3 encourages customers to create at home, too. Serino is struck by how the serendipitous collaboration between MP3, Malone and La DoubleJ resulted in a unique dinner-and-a-show experience that accurately reflects that singular Italian directive to live in the moment. “The North Loop is such a special space,” he concludes. “It’s such a wonderful, community-oriented place to be.” Head to our website for an exclusive Q+A with chef Jamie Malone about her dreamy tablescapes.

SINGAPORE

BEST FOR FOOD FANATICS To be clear, you’re probably not going to opt for a second home in Singapore just for the food. Most foreigners who buy property here do so for the safety and stability — with the added bonus of a phenomenal food scene. As you likely recall from the hit movie Crazy Rich Asians, this destination is known for its hawker centers: open-air food courts that serve up delicious street fare and are a staple of the Singaporean way of life. Local expats say that eating their way through these super accessible spots is a favorite pastime. But make no mistake: Street food isn’t the only epicurean draw here. The isle also has a booming fine dining scene, with haute cuisine outposts like Les Amis and Wolfgang Puck’s CUT leading the way. The crux? While you do have to have the capital to buy in (condos cost multiple millions, on average), the payoff can clearly be quite tasty.

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

BEST FOR OUTDOOR DEVOTEES

If you want to be one with nature, you could plop yourself in the middle of the woods Henry David Thoreau–style. Or you could get that daily dose of the outdoors without having to go full-on recluse in Cape Town, leaving room for possibilities like dining out on the waterfront or taking in a new art show at the convention center. Situated between the mountains and the ocean, the legislative capital of South Africa offers the best of both worlds for active types, meaning you can pair an epic Table Mountain morning hike with a chill afternoon beach session, all in the same day. And oh, the wildlife! Travel just a few hours inland and you’ll find yourself in prime safari land, where you can spot lions, zebras and giraffes galore. A top safety tip: Do as the locals do — plus avoid wandering around by yourself at night. Buying into the coveted neighborhoods of Bantry Bay, Camps Bay, Clifton, Green Point and Sea Point helps, too. Not only do these areas attract tons of expats, their prime safety location makes them a wise investment to boot.

PANAMA CITY, PANAMA

Although Panama City doesn’t often appear on those big cosmopolitan city lists, it’s a buzzing metropolis worthy of your attention. The capital is filled with attractions that make you feel alive, from its vibrant historic district to its thriving restaurant and nightlife scene to its sparkly skyscrapers that remind you that things are happening here. The location can’t be beat, either. Not only are you an easy drive from some of the country’s best beaches, rainforests and national parks, you’re also just a quick flight away from the Caribbean, the rest of Central America and South America. This destination is increasingly popular among entrepreneurs, who come for the booming startup scene, as well as retirees, who enjoy the appealing benefits and cost of living. Bonus: Many homes are updated and modern, and insiders say you can expect to see good capital gains if you buy right.

It’s easy to see why this popular stretch of coastline on the southernmost tip of Portugal consistently lures discerning world travelers. The region is known for its incredible goldensand beaches, its otherworldly rock formations and ancient castles, and its bustling nightlife tradition. But Algarve is appealing on a more practical level, too, as the area boasts solid infrastructure, a top safety record and a high quality of life. Second home buyers also love the variety here. Properties run the gamut from luxe villas in Vilamoura (with its massive marina and golf courses) to more modern condos in Lagos (known for its charming old town juxtaposing newer parts of the city). The latter is especially seeing rapid change, with growing demand for high-end condos close to downtown and the beach. Experts say one of the biggest upsides of Algarve is that foreigners can get loans at appealing interest rates and a favorable LTV ratio — meaning setting down some roots here is a no-brainer.

NICE, FRANCE

BEST FOR LUXURY LOVERS This one shouldn’t come as a surprise, as luxury buyers have flocked to the French Riviera for centuries. Nicknamed Nice the Beautiful, this glamorous resort town has all the finer things in life: sparkling Mediterranean views, beautiful beaches, upscale shopping, and robust wining and dining offerings. The area is also renowned for its sunny climate and its rich cultural heritage (the town was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site last year, after all). Although Nice has long been a magnet for the rich and famous, drawing everyone from Hollywood stars to actual royalty, it still manages to ooze Old World charm. Expats are often drawn to the affluent areas outside the city center, like Cimiez and Mont Boron, where houses tend to be more spacious. That said, while many apartments in the more bohemian Old Town are in fact quite old, some have been renovated — and revamping one yourself poses a unique investment opportunity. For this story, we tapped some top international real-estate experts, including former Finder Singapore Director Sara Lyle Bow, Real Estate Trend Alert Editor Ronan McMahon, Compare the Market spokesperson Hannah Norton, and InterNations Founder and Co-CEO Malte Zeeck.

PICTURE THIS: A WEEKLONG VACATION THAT TAKES YOU

straight back to childhood. No, not the part fraught with angst and awkwardness, but the carefree blissed-out days of youth devoid of responsibility and tinged with the nostalgic scent of bonfire baked into your jeans. This is adult summer camp, a growing travel trend that lets grown-ups relive the life-changing experiences that only camp can offer — but with craft cocktails in place of Kool-Aid. We know what you’re thinking. Sure, camp was fun, but I’m more of a Frette-linens-and-sommelier-curated-wine-list kind of person these days. Fear not. The adult version of this summer holiday manages to seamlessly marry the breezy back-in-the-day tomfoolery with a hefty dose of high-end amenities. But you can forget Europe for such a sojourn and instead set your sights on Wisconsin, a hotbed for adult summer camps. Once a prohibition speakeasy for thirsty Chicagoans, Camp Wandawega

in Elkhorn looks like something out of a Ralph Lauren ad campaign. Owners David Hernandez and Tereasa Surratt have used their design chops to renovate his beloved childhood destination. Here, mornings begin with a wake-up bugle call — or Johnny Cash over the scratchy PA system — beckoning well-rested guests over to the canteen for coffee and pastries. Afternoons are for activities like shuffleboard, tennis, basketball, volleyball, canoeing, hiking, archery or perhaps hatchet throwing. Leisure seekers, meanwhile, can fill their thermos with chardonnay and hit the craft cabin for some pottery or weaving. Self-care is big at camp and takes many forms, from meditation to high-end wine tastings to deep conversations around the fire. Evenings at Wandawega commence at dusk for s’mores by the bonfire or beers on the beach. Dinner is taken in the high-end dining hall, then camp goers cap off the evening with a night hike or stargazing workshop.

its cardinal rules: For the first 24 hours, you can’t tell anyone what you do for a living. It sounds trite, but life-changing experiences — and relationships — aren’t relegated to childhood. “Some of my best memories are from when I was a camper, so why stop making those memories when you’re old enough to have some real fun?” asks Drew Griswold, director of Camp Halcyon, an adults-only summer camp in Wautoma, Wisconsin. He explains that guests range in age from 21 to 71 and include both groups and solo attendees, adding, “And just like at kids’ summer camp, they always leave with a new best friend.” Yes, as the endless social media memes tell us, adulting is hard (see: working, parenting, aging, having it all, etc.). But luckily for us, there is an escape. At adult summer camp, you can turn back time to your most magical moments — even if just for a long weekend. Head to ArtfulLiving.com for our list of top adult summer camps.

Sleepaway camp traditionally folds into a poignant time in our lives, when we’re discovering ourselves, testing the limits and enjoying a newfound sense of freedom. The adult version acts as a time machine back to that age, before we started whittling away our time on Zoom meetings and social media feeds. For writer Tracy Block, her first adult camper experience provided a much-needed departure from the daily grind: “It was a wonderful distraction from the stressors and hustle I face behind the computer every day,” she explains. “Being unplugged, outside and in nature was a great respite for me.” Sure enough, busting out of our tired grown-up routines and ruts is a common theme. Campowerment, which hosts retreats in Ojai, California, and the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, challenges guests to embrace their identity outside of their occupation. The chichi camp appeals to powerful women with luxury digs and curated offerings — think private hotel-style rooms, yoga classes, leadership sessions and wine-drenched happy hours. But perhaps the biggest attraction is one of

Everything on the menu is meant to be shared family-style. Turkish manti dumplings and pillowy hummus piled high with ground beef and pine nuts are popular starters. The panoply of vegetarian options ranges from pide bread stuffed with cheesy black truffle or lentils, sumac and pickled peppers to cauliflower roasted with tahini and hazelnut dukka to sweet jeweled rice studded with almonds, barberries and saffron. This is bold, flavorful food that won’t weigh you down.

After a multi-year revitalization, Union Station is as grand and busy as ever, with new public art installations for ArtworxTO: Toronto’s Year of Public Art. Don’t miss the I am land that speaks West Wing exhibit curated by Maya Wilson-Sanchez, the third chapter of a mixed-media series exploring embodied connections to land through paintings, photographs and sculptures by emerging artists. Each summer, this landmark transportation hub bustles with commuters and tourists, coming to life as a cultural and entertainment destination with markets, pop-up activations, live music and dance performances. The original 1920s storefronts have been preserved along the Front Street Promenade, and glass moat covers add a sleek modern touch while honoring the building’s heritage. Plus the new Foodie Aisle features grab-and-go fare like burgers, tacos, roti and dim sum prepared by top area chefs.

DINE

Stepping into Casa Loma, the city’s famous Gothic Revival–style castle, for dinner feels like arriving at a royal banquet. And the feast at Don Alfonso 1890 is certainly fit for a king. Father/son duo Alfonso and Ernesto Iaccarino developed the menu, transporting their Michelin two-starred eatery from the Amalfi Coast to a verdant conservatory in Canada. Signature dishes like mackerel with vermicelli noodles, caramelized onions and Sicilian pine nuts showcase a modern Mediterranean flair. While the eight-course tasting menu is based entirely on recipes from the original restaurant in Italy, other offerings have been reimagined with local and regional ingredients. For example, Manitoba bison replaces beef fillet wrapped in Swiss chard and mozzarella with tomato chili reduction. Plus this intimate 60-seat spot was recently recognized by 50 Top Italy as the best Italian restaurant outside the country by a voting panel of 300+ industry insiders.

SILVER LAKE POOL & INN

W

hile we all love luxe getaways, there’s no place like home — especially a friend’s super stylish home. Hoteliers are tuning in to this craving, clicking their heels together to create more intimate, meaningful accommodations. Even in the most lavish of destinations, natives and guests alike are gravitating away from grandeur and toward something subtler and more spirited: the neighborhood inn. On a balmy weeknight in Santa Barbara, four friends are huddled together on a tufted sofa in the Palihouse microlobby, which looks more like a living room. Collected portraits grace the pale blue walls, a random bowl full of tennis balls rests in the corner, and Saltillo tile floors, rattan light fixtures and leafy palms feel unmistakably Old California. As it gets late, the locals plan their next visit, gushing over their new favorite spot in town. It’s like home, one quips, only better. Neighborhood inns are in again. And while they’ve always been residential in spirit to make guests feel at home, they’re being taken up a notch by creative owners, designers and influencers. A detour from flash, grandeur and opulence, these smaller hotels feel cozy, personal and drenched in nostalgia — think honor bars, passed-down banana bread recipes, and playlists personally curated by the proprietor. Most importantly, they come with an unwavering sense of place. At every turn, there’s a thoughtful, often quirky detail designed to reflect its destination and offer this gentle yet affirmative reminder: You are here.

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL One thing innkeepers love to hear over and over again is that their property has personality. Just as they seek to steep a sense of place into their hotels, they also want to infuse heart and soul — their heart and soul, that is. Which means they’re often the only ones fit to dream up the design. For Avi Brosh, former real-estate developer turned Palisociety founder, design gave him the confidence to create his empire of neighborhood inns. After losing his savings in the recession, he took his last property, Palihouse West Hollywood, and learned the hospitality industry fast, vowing he’d be the only one to design his inns. “I’m not a classically trained designer,” Brosh says. “My sensibility is more residential in nature, and I’m trying to create personality in these spaces. You do that by mixing styles and periods. And you include unexpected things they would never teach you in design school — like a bowl of tennis balls,” which he puts in all of his hotels. Brosh’s aesthetic is eccentric, layered and curious. Each of his outposts from the Pacific Northwest to the East Coast is unique in architecture and style, always echoing its locale. To

wit: Miami’s is set in a restored art deco building; Seattle’s is across from Pike Place Market with its own coffee house; and Silver Lake’s is a sparkling Los Angeles oasis. One commonality? All pull from nostalgia. When creating Palisociety, Brosh tapped memories of traveling with his family on a shoestring budget to European-style inns that felt more like homes than hotels. This helped frame each of his highly stylized, very un-corporate-feeling boutique properties, where the design is entirely schemed by him, down to the color palette, the wallpaper, the umbrella stripes, the bar menu and that inexplicable bowl full of tennis balls. “I wanted this company to be very proprietor-driven,” Brosh exclaims. “I didn’t want it to feel cold and corporate. I didn’t want it to feel transactional. I want you to come and understand a little piece of me as a person.” Innkeepers get to be wildly expressive within their walls while also breaking the mold in their environments, even in the most high-end markets. Life House Nantucket, for example, is a complete detour from the island’s elite old guard properties. It’s one of the micro inns under the Life House group, founded by Rami Zeidan in 2017 with a mission to “connect people with new places by celebrating the heritage of the neighborhood.” On Nantucket, the team transformed a former sea captain’s house into a 14-room “nonchalant coastal cottage” with a library and a lush garden terrace just a stroll from downtown’s cobblestone streets. Here, you feel truly submerged in local life, not just on the periphery. And that insider feel is exactly what the original inn always aimed to do. Proprietors have been putting their stamp on their spaces since the beginning. What started across the pond with English pub owners offering weary travelers room, board and a house pint evolved into an entire genre of beloved neighborhood hangouts. Inns became highly personal spots that were more than just a place to sleep. They were fun, with locals dropping by for a pint or two. By the time the concept moved west, business got even more personal, with notable figures taking the keys. When actress Doris Day took over Carmel’s 1906 Cypress Inn, the late animal activist left such a mark that the pet-friendly hotel offers vintage sidecar biking experiences for dogs to this day. Plus locals still frequent her Mediterranean terrace for happy hour. As centuries have passed and our world has become oversaturated with sites offering limitless luxury, proprietors are once again dialing down on size to deliver a more intimate experience. “This idea of creating the best version of the neighborhood inn backed by a very sophisticated operating model is working,” affirms Brosh, who believes that designing by instinct helped lead to his success. Take Palihouse Santa Barbara, which is his eighth hotel and set in the historic Presidio neighborhood. It opened its doors in 2021 during the height of the pandemic yet has been sold out almost every weekend. Bold design moves have been as important as big business decisions, enticing guests to linger longer in the lobby to take it all in. While Brosh laughs that there’s a fine line between collector and hoarder, he thinks it’s the personal touches that people remember: the heirloom pieces, the eye-catching portraits, the vintage photographs, the bowls full of shells (or tennis balls!). It’s his personal point of view that’s executed ever so elegantly and distinctively that puts that signature stamp on each property. “My blood, sweat and tears are in every single hotel,” he says. “When they’re open, it’s a collapse-on-the-floor type of situation. I’m all in.” Going all in isn’t easy. And it isn’t for everyone. “There’s a tension to good taste,” Brosh adds. “You can’t teach that. You either see it, or you don’t. I think the way you get there is by being somewhat fearless.” And if the vision isn’t there, the best move is to let someone else make it shine.

118

Artful Living

S TA R P O W E R Curating interiors to a high level of sophistication takes a careful eye, and not every hotelier is born with it. Rather than infuse a point of view that simply isn’t there, smart innkeepers call in help, turning to the pros. Outsourcing good taste to a true designer can be a win-win, especially when that someone is a fearless expert. It’s no secret that many top-tier hotels are designer-driven — think Kelly Wearstler, Kit Kemp, Ken Fulk, Jonathan Adler and Philippe Starck. In taking a page from this playbook, proprietors are enlisting big names to rethink their small spaces. Mark D. Sikes recently put his signature blue-andwhite spin on Holiday House, the 1951 Palm Springs inn designed by acclaimed architect Herbert W. Burns. Nathan Turner, meanwhile, reimagined part of the old Alisal Ranch in California’s Santa Ynez Valley, layering in modern Western decor, textiles and antiques for a look that would make even Ralph Lauren swoon. Million Dollar Decorators star Martyn Lawrence Bullard, known for his more-is-more mentality, successfully pulled off small-scale pattern play at three California inns: Casa Laguna; the Sands in Palm Springs; and the recently opened Prospect in Hollywood, where fearless decorating is on full display. “When it comes to small-scale design, restraint is something we all have to learn,” he notes. “But mostly, it’s about not being afraid to just go for it.”

MAYFLOWER INN & SPA

“I think of small inns as the hotel equivalent of a dinner party. It’s an intimate environment, usually not suited for the masses.”

The Prospect bears plenty of Old Hollywood nods; suites are themed for movie stars who lived in the building or down the street, like Greta Garbo and Elizabeth Taylor. Bullard imbued guest quarters with whimsy and luxury, using stripes, pattern and chinoiserie for that in-room experience he thinks you can only really get at a boutique property. “The whole idea of travel is to garner a sense of place, and the beauty of small hotels is that they allow you that luxury,” explains Bullard, who loves to wallpaper the ceiling, throw a chandelier off to one side for romance, or curate a cocktail bar with indulgences and maybe even a bottle of absinthe. “It’s the little elements that make the American inn an exciting place to visit right now. For me, it’s the curation of how things all come together and the excitement of the unknown.” If predictability is a buzzkill for boutique hotels, color is the antidote. And Bullard’s inns, like Brosh’s, are full of it. In full disclosure, Bullard admits sometimes as a guest he likes to stay at the Four Seasons because you know what you’re going to get. But as a designer, it’s the unpredictable interplay of color, fun and surprise that gets him going. “People come to a hotel to stay a night or two, and they want fantasy,” he muses. “You want it to feel welcoming, luxurious, unexpected and enveloping so they never want to leave.” Building romance and fantasy is a talent, and it’s what Bullard believes really hooks the guest, making the memory and prompting repeat visits. But nothing injects more personality into an inn than its locale.

L O C AT I O N , L O C AT I O N , L O C AT I O N A neighborhood inn only works if it expertly mirrors its surroundings. For Bullard, that means bold Moroccan tiles and lanterns to play off the 1900s California Mission roots of Casa Laguna. For Brosh, it’s Mediterranean-meets-art-deco furnishings in Miami. And for most designers, it’s all about grounding a property with a sense of place. When uber chic Auberge Resorts desperately needed to perk up one of its oldest establishments, Connecticut’s historic Mayflower Inn, they tapped a trusted pro who knows how to create a persona out of a place. Celerie Kemble — who recently designed the Dominican Republic’s playful Playa Grande Beach Club (the subject of her new tome, Island Whimsy) — came onboard eager to bring the property into the modern era, bidding goodbye to stuffy white glove service and saying hello to color in a fresh new way. “We wanted unpretentious, informal and very, very pretty,

in a flip-of-the-hand way,” notes Kemble, who piled in perky pinks, spring greens and sky blues during the refresh. In respecting the roots of the 1894 inn, which at one time served as a boarding school, she also knew what it wouldn’t be. Authentic would not mean pastoral 1800s. There would be no white tablecloths with vast sightlines in the dining room. Instead, Kemble channeled sunny country picnic moments, literally opting for earthy bugs and oversize leaves in her patterns. To honor the history, Kemble retained original elements then layered in vintage books, cracked picture frames, collected mirrors, hooked rugs and paper flowers. It’s Little Women meets Alice in Wonderland, with plenty of curiosity at every turn. So much so that guests may be surprised to find out the inn is under the umbrella of a big corporation. “It feels like there’s an invisible host, instead of being run by a hotel group,” Kemble quips. “People are hungrier for intimacy than they are for grandeur. Grandeur puts you out of sorts; it reminds you that you’re a temporary consumer. Intimacy is life experience. To make something authentic, you have to make something new.” And new meant color and pattern everywhere, which

she applied through contract-grade fabrics and wallpapers from Schumacher and Sister Parish. While it may feel like a kaleidoscope, there’s a connected thread of inspired hues that reflects what’s outside the window in the Connecticut countryside. Adds Kemble: “My theory is that your eye is at rest when there’s a lot of color, just like in nature. When it’s too controlled, it makes me anxious.” Looking out the window was all the inspiration designer and Surf Shack author Nina Freudenberger needed for her two recent California hospitality projects. “White Water was inspired by the incredible beauty and nature surrounding the inn, particularly Moonstone Beach,” she says. “The colors were drawn from the seagrass, the boardwalk and the Monterey pine. For San Luis Creek Lodge, I was blown away by what an incredible place San Luis Obispo is — so sophisticated and totally connected to nature. I wanted each room to feel that same way.” To accent the furnishings, she filled guest rooms with accessories by local artisans for a West Coast spin, ensuring everything from the palette to the pillows reflected the views. It was important that the spaces feel like a getaway yet warm and residential. “Inns should feel more domestic,” Freudenberger declares. “As opposed to just providing a place to rest your head, the environment should respond on a micro scale to what’s happening in the area. That allows the traveler to feel connected and inspired by their experience.” Sometimes travelers are looking for a truly niche experience, allowing creatives to really let loose. Boston-based designer Rachel Reider teamed up with Lark Hotels to give their inns distinctive destination-driven personality. Nearly all of the brand’s boutique properties are in New England, from a seafaring Colonial in Kennebunkport, Maine, to the après-ski-esque Field Guide Lodge in Vermont to the retro Hotel Salem set in a former Massachusetts department store. The Maine and Nantucket outposts sport preppy Vineyard Vines suites, where decor is filled with stripes and swordfish, and the window fabric trim is made from the beloved belts, letting both brand and location play host. A bit much? Perhaps. Staying in a brand-driven suite on an island is akin to wearing the band T-shirt to the concert. But it’s a trend proprietors are cashing in on — especially when they have a growing portfolio of properties to play with.

THE NEW ERA OF

R O A D S I D E M O T E L S The American motel is having its second moment in the spotlight, and it’s even brighter than before. Thanks to the pandemic bringing back road trippers, these low-budget, high-design pit stops are getting lit up with “no vacancy.” These iconic pieces of Americana are absolute reflections of their location, thoughtfully salvaged by design-minded hoteliers for today’s traveler. Here are five to visit.

TOURISTS // North Adams, Massachusetts

This woodsy Berkshires retreat tops many designers’ bucket lists, and for good reason. Inspired by the classic roadside motor lodge, the 48-room sixties-era modern country inn is immersed in nature, with trailheads out each door for endless adventures — that is, if guests can leave the fireside lodge, where vintage Mario Bellini Camaleonda sofas beckon.

CAPRI HOTEL // Ojai, California

The latest Shelter Social Club offering, this 30-room 1960s motel reopened in 2020. The California-meets-Mediterranean-oasis vibe is everywhere, from the lush landscaping to the pastel palette inspired by Italian design of yesteryear. The original rock fireplace and low-slung seating in the lobby feel like a groovy, cinematic step back in time.

JOIE INN // Anna Maria Island, Florida

Ashley Petrone, the influencer-cum-designer behind @arrowsandbow, has shared with the world (well, at least her nearly 710,000 Instagram followers) her recent journey of buying and redesigning a four-room inn on the Gulf of Mexico. Opened in 2021, this selfie-ready spot is decked out in a “sunset and seashell” palette, with painted rainbows and rattan furniture.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY TIM STREET-PORTER, JAMIE KOWAL, YOSHIHIRO MAKINO, ZACH BRESNICK AND SYDNEY BROWN

CUYAMA BUCKHORN // New Cuyama, California

Yes, this 21-room inn is in the middle of nowhere, but people still come for the wildflower blooms and to experience this relic of a 1952 motel reenergized by co-owner and designer Ferial Sadeghian. She restored the original sign and saloon, even recreating a wall of vintage taxidermies. The greenhouse and poolside cocktail bar nod to the local farm-to-table dining.

THE DRIFTER // New Orleans

Midcentury architecture meets the Big Easy at this 20-room 1956 property, which was reimagined in 2017. Inspired by the Beat Generation, the Drifter is full of carefree moments — from its creative murals to its hopping pool scene, not to mention the global cafe, frozen cocktails, and rotating food trucks on call.

CHAIN REACTION It’s almost a dirty word in the hospitality industry, but cringy or not, “chain” is very often the secret to the modern innkeeper’s success. Far from the Hyatts and Marriotts of the world, smaller hotel chains like Lark, Life House and Palisociety are able to keep doing what they do well by scaling. For Brosh, every time he opens another Pali property, it gets easier and easier. Not just because of the learning curve, but because he has a centralized system and core staff in place. “The status of the neighborhood hotel has always been fractured,” notes Brosh, adding that independent innkeepers, usually a couple, simply did too much minding their single property. While this can add up to a memorable experience (cue the adorable family-run inn on an Italian hillside!), those owners are doing all the bookings, billing and banking for one establishment. Sure, it’s charming, but it’s also highly inefficient. “Our 25-room hotel has the same horsepower as a 250-room hotel,” Brosh explains. “Even though it feels local, inspired, bespoke, personal and purposeful, it’s being done with a very sophisticated mindset in terms of all of the banker-type things you have to do when you’re building hotels. And the industry rewards scale.” Scaling has rewarded Brosh with not just financial success, but also time to create. Time to spend on inventive details: the bistro chairs, the perfect cup of coffee, the bowls full of tennis balls. And time for his staff (who don’t wear name tags or recite canned scripts) to spend with guests, since all the business is handled behind the scenes. Says Brosh: “We approach the entire portfolio of hotels as a collection, and because of that, we’re able to operate at a very sophisticated level. Nobody here has to run around with a bunch of keys. They just focus on making sure people have a good time.” This kind of authentic presence is a big part of the secret sauce for cult favorite West Coast hospitality group Shelter Social Club, too. Founded by Kenny Osehan, it’s the poster child for successfully scaled family businesses; his parents, aunt and cousins own nearby inns and eateries under the brand, allowing for plenty of cross-promotion. While each spot, including the Ojai Rancho Inn and recently opened Capri Hotel, is independent in design and spirit, they all have cool communal areas — be it the lobby, a poolside bar or an inviting fire pit — that lend a clubby atmosphere like a laid-back house party. And there’s always a familiar face at the door. “We make personal connections with each person who walks in, letting people feel instantly at home,” says Osehan, who has mastered the art of modern innkeeping. “We have a lot of repeat clientele who get to know our team and come back just to hang out with us.” Another undeniably cool hangout? The old-school motel. The resurgence of the roadside inn (see page 123 for our top picks) has revived relics that may have otherwise been demolished, giving way to shiny resorts or mega-chains. Instead, forward-thinking entrepreneurs are getting their hands on them first. Kimberly Walker transformed a dusty 1954 hilltop motel into the now sought-after Skyview, complete with vineyard views and local wines. Perched high above California’s Highway 101 in Los Alamos, the property was previously so notoriously abandoned it had long ago been dubbed Bates Motel. Today, it’s wildly occupied with modern amenities and just enough weirdness to draw crowds every weekend. There aren’t any shower curtains, but in a nod to Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, the restaurant is named Norman. “I think of small inns as the hotel equivalent of a dinner party,” explains Walker, who also operates the nearby Granada and Hotel Ynez under the Nomada Hotel Group, with two more renovations underway. “A well-executed inn is the owner’s design experience created for their guests. It’s an intimate environment, usually not suited for the masses.” And that’s the crux: These neighborhood inns aren’t made for the masses. She adds: “People are craving spaces with stories to tell. Properties rooted in the history of the locale are timeless and will keep their relevance as long as they evolve with the guest.” With Skyview’s evolution came farm-to-table menus, craft cocktails, cool bikes at the ready and private outdoor showers. Yet eclectic nods to the past abound, from vintage room keys to the original neon sign, once again alerting: You are here. And like most of these revivals, once you’re there, you won’t want to leave. It’s like home — only better.

CHARLES STINSON DESIGNS AN INDOOR/OUTDOOR ARCHITECTURAL MARVEL.

ARCHITECTURE

THERE’S ALWAYS BEEN SOMETHING SPECIAL ABOUT THIS SPOT, EVEN BEFORE THE DEBUT OF THIS

stunning home, which today rises like the prow of a boat from the point of a peninsula, pushing forward into the water. But now there’s another level of magic. Architect Charles Stinson designed the natural white limestone residence to be an indoor/outdoor oasis for a busy, outdoorsy family. In fact, as dreaming and designs got underway, so did news that the homeowners would soon be welcoming twins, giving Stinson some new considerations to puzzle over. Two wings are anchored by a great room, and every space is connected to the outside, with a grand entrance to an infinity pool with cascading sides leading to the lake. “It’s not only about defining these spaces you live in, but letting the light in and connecting you to it,” Stinson explains. As such, he designed the windows and roof overhangs to allow for natural illumination without glare, letting light in during the winter but blocking sizzling rays come summer. The windows also line up for cross ventilation. “Instead of creating a house like a cave, this house is like a hole in the trunk of a tree with a great view,” he notes. “It’s like living in the spaces between the branches and leaves. There’s a definite but ever-present changing light and view around you. Birds fly along one side of the house, you see them on the other side and their shadows come right through.” One wing features the kitchen, with a huge built-in breakfast booth and custom cabinetry by Braaten Creative Woods with interior Italian plaster finishes by Darril Otto. Behind that, her office, a huge laundry and mudroom with a craft area, and the four-car garage. Above that, entertaining spaces and kids’ bedrooms. The other wing comprises his office and the owners’ suite. Connecting the two wings is a great room 2.5 stories high, with a catwalk and a staircase on each side.

ARCHITECTURE

Interior designer Kim Streeter took on the palette and furnishings. “We started with blue and brown, because those were their wedding colors and they’ve maintained a love for those colors,” she explains. She succeeded in balancing the luxurious, airy abode with a sense of coziness; being very family-oriented and having younger kids means they want interactive spaces that make it easy to connect and spend time together. “We chose a lot of special pieces and finishes, but we also wanted it to be comfortable and inviting so it wasn’t too intimidating for guests to come and enjoy,” she adds. Because the owners entertain frequently and spend lots of time with extended family, the kitchen and living areas were paramount. “The kitchen is usually the HQ for family time,” says Streeter. “When the mother is cooking the meals, the kids are often hanging out in the casual seating area in the kitchen, having a conversation about how the day went. We designed that space to be pretty flexible, with durable fabrics and rugs.” Custom cabinetry is capped with Cambria countertops and complemented by Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances. Farther afield in the great room, Streeter layered in more formal, upscale pieces primed for entertaining, such as a Minotti furniture grouping, customized to a height that makes them easy to get in and out of. A nest area closer to the front of the home offers a smaller secondary conversation nook. Streeter says the owners’ suite was a fun project: “a Zen, timeless space that met their needs for great light, a soaking tub and a steam shower.” It’s truly a getaway within the oasis-like abode. They also custom designed their closets, taking into account exactly how they wanted to organize them. And the kids gave input on their rooms, outlining their preferences (which changed over time as the house was designed). In the end, the owners use every inch of their home and look forward to many joyous, active days — inside and out. “This house allows the family to be totally private and still connected to nature; it allows their spirits to soar,” Stinson confirms. “They just love it. They really do.”

THE ELEMENT OF WATER ESKUCHE DESIGN AND RANDOLPH INTERIOR DESIGN CREATE AN EMPTY NESTER PERCH OVERLOOKING LAKE MINNETONKA. B Y K AT I E D O H M A N

THIS LAKE MINNETONKA HOME IS A STUDY OF CONTRASTS

— between light and dark, the element of water and its rippled reflection. An empty nester couple was ready to give up their traditional Bloomington digs for something fresher and lighter. More modern, but not cold or hard-edged. But first, the original house had to come down. With the help of architect Peter Eskuche and Mikan Custom Homes, the footprint was moved, pushing the future structure closer to the street to allow for more “front yard” overlooking the lake and boasting not only the best light but also ideal places for grandkids to play. The narrow lot made designing tricky. The 4,500-square-foot house is a mere 40 feet wide, but the priority was to feature expansive water vistas. “We maximized every square inch we could,” Eskuche recalls, noting that it was a true accomplishment to create a home with all views facing one direction: the lake. The owners expressly wanted water views immediately upon entering the front door, but this ultimately proved physically impossible. That said, interior designer Sarah Randolph took it as a challenge to set the tone for the entire abode right there in the foyer. She sourced a striking Area Environments wall covering through Holly Hunt, customized the color and hung it upside-down for an ethereal effect. Then one step to the left and — ta-da! — there’s Lake Minnetonka in all its purifying glory. The foyer stairway is drenched in natural light, thanks to sun studies Eskuche did on the property before finalizing designs. Threeinch white oak treads almost float up to the second floor, and a gauzy, showstopping light fixture dubbed the Wrinkle bobs above. Then came the main living and entertaining space: a great room crowned by a Visual Comfort light. Thanks to the residence’s easy-flow layout, it opens up to the lakeside “social kitchen” and dining area. A moody, sexy scullery is accessible from both the foyer and kitchen, which includes a large wine fridge, double ovens and overflow storage. Another standout feature? The bar, which was a priority for the husband. With a backsplash of glass tile, it’s designed to feel like a reflection of the shimmery surface of the water. “It’s another spot with contrast, which we thoughtfully placed throughout the house — a really dark punch of color right there,” Randolph shares. Off the kitchen is a space that also serves as a contrast to the rest of the house. As Randolph explains, “I told them, ‘You need to think of this room like wearing a cashmere suit.’” Phillip Jeffries wallpaper creates a woolen effect, enveloping the perfect place for the owners to snuggle up and watch TV — that is, when they aren’t gazing out the expansive windows. “The powder room is another pièce de résistance,” Randolph notes. A sink was configured from huge agate-like onyx slabs and backlit to stunning visual effect. Not bad for slabs that were accidentally smashed when a forklift driver got his shoelace caught up on a pedal. “I knew we would chop it up and glue it back together,” she says. “It’s absolutely mind-blowing.” The lower level features another living area with an Italiantiled fireplace, a bar, a bathroom, and two guest bedrooms with coordinating (but not matching) wallpaper. And a preppy, coastal bunkhouse accommodates the smallest of sleepover friends. But perhaps the most special moment in the entire residence, Eskuche explains, is the birdhouse oasis, located just off the owners’ suite. This 12-by-12-foot spot isn’t overly large, but it’s supremely secluded and boasts one of the best lake vistas. Positioned around a fire pit with capabilities to drop screens for privacy and bug control, it’s a respite from the often-busy household. “The upstairs balcony isolates them from everything; if they have a ton of people in the house, they can go up on the porch for some quiet,” Eskuche comments. “Overall, they didn’t do any space in this home subpar. It was such a fun project to design.”

STRAND DESIGN BRINGS A MODERN APPROACH TO A MINNESOTA LAKESIDE CABIN. BY W E N DY L U B OV I C H

CABIN

Artful Living

IT TAKES SOME DESIGN BRAVURA TO DROP A

standout steel-clad domicile into an up north enclave. But that’s precisely what Minneapolis architectural designer David Strand did with this Spicer cabin, dubbed Blackbox. The sleek, modern structure pairs simple geometry on the outside with clean elegance on the inside. “It’s definitely a big, black volume,” he says. “But it’s nestled in there and doesn’t expose itself until you are upon it — and then it just feels calm.” That sense of calm is infused throughout this year-round getaway, which boasts not one but two water views: Lake Florida on one side and peaceful wetlands on the other. For owner Ryan Garry, the 4,100-square-foot home’s simple lines and open spaces offer an easy approach to cabin life, making weekends a curated affair. “David’s designs match my general feelings of challenging the conventional and acceptable ordinary way of life,” Garry notes. “I simply don’t like following the rules.” To be sure, you won’t find dark, dated log cabin vibes here. Instead, bright daylight floods the double-height living room, which feels airy and spacious. Expansive glass panels and a folding-wall system bring the outside in. Then up on the second level, a glass rail frames a favorite seating area designed to bring spatial continuity. “I always make sure rooms are purposeful and have the right human scale,” Strand explains. “That way you’re drawn to the spaces and excited to use them.” During the week, Garry is a criminal defense attorney in Minneapolis. Come weekends, he spends family time at the lake home with his wife, Teresa, and their two children. His father has a cabin just a few doors down, and his brother owns a house nearby. So lake life is a full-on family tradition, and this sun-filled abode is the perfect gathering space. “After a day of cruising on the boat, we usually all get together for a big family dinner,” Garry shares. “A crew of 17 means smoked ribs, brisket and plenty of tacos.” Accommodating those family festivities has always been part of the plan. That’s why the home’s design remained streamlined, letting the rich materials shine. Walls clad in white oak lend a sense of warmth. Crisp ivory paint feels fresh. And the polished concrete floors underfoot add a lush honed layer. Each room is allowed to breathe with little visual clutter, emphasizing the basic geometric planes. “For a second home, we want to step away from our day-to-day lives and create a totally different kind of home, like we’re on vacation,” Strand muses. “This home offers a blank canvas, allowing the people to provide the chaos.” Part of that chaos is a sense of play — which is also baked into the design. Outside, for instance, a circular concrete paver grounds a fire pit, transforming it into the ultimate s’more-making station. And inside, a special room on the main level holds Garry’s prized golf simulator. With a glass door overlooking the lake, it has become his sun-drenched hideaway. “Usually golf simulators are hidden somewhere in a dark basement,” Strand points out. “But here, we created a dedicated space that’s become a favorite hangout.” Finally, there’s the matter of the enormous moose head hanging in the living room. Even though this modern abode eschews traditional cabin references, this specimen proudly lords over the space. Some family members weren’t so sure about the decor choice, but it’s become a piece of cabin lore. “The origins of the moose remain a conundrum,” Garry cheekily confesses. “Depending on which version is told over cocktails, it was either obtained in the wetlands of northern Alaska or the back pages of Google.” For a tour inside this home, visit ArtfulLiving.com.

MOUNTAIN MAJESTY

TEA2 ARCHITECTS TAKES ROCKY MOUNTAIN RUGGEDNESS TO NEW LEVELS OF REFINEMENT. BY MERRITT BAMRICK

Summer 2022

ADVENTURE

RETREAT

THE MOUNTAINS ARE CALLING — AND HAVE BEEN SINCE THE

1970s — for one Minnesota couple. During Bill and Carin Simpson’s family treks to Breckenridge over the past five decades, they’ve been swept up by the Colorado ski town’s rich history and the camaraderie of fellow vacationers they now call friends. And since life has quieted down, the avid winter adventurers were eager to fully immerse themselves as locals (for most of the year, at least). Having worked with TEA2 Architects on their Lake Harriet home, the Simpsons excitedly tapped the Minneapolis firm to bring a totally different style to the mountains. “Our history with the clients and expertise in distinctive retreats made us a perfect fit,” says Senior Project Manager Petra Schwartze, who worked alongside Principal Dan Nepp to articulate the exterior and develop the interior architecture from existing plans by local firm bhh Partners. After years of searching for a house, the Simpsons decided to start from scratch on a 60-acre parcel of land abutted by national forest on three sides, just a couple miles from downtown Breckenridge and the ski gondola. “There were plenty of beautiful homes with aspects we loved, but nothing felt just right,” Carin shares. Thoughtfully stitching together the clients’ design inspiration and the mining town’s unique architectural history, the team created a getaway that honors the area’s eclectic spirit and boasts all the luxuries of resort living. The two-story ranch highlights the vernacular architecture beautifully. “We wanted to harness all the character without the cliché,” Nepp explains. Historically, mining town structures would start small; miners and ranchers would add on as their families, workshops and access to materials grew over time. “It seems haphazard, but it’s acutely programmatic,” he adds. This method is emulated in the house’s long floor plan and ancillary spaces. While the 5,800-square-foot home may appear sprawling, “it lives smaller than it looks,” notes Schwartze. Core living is all on the main level so it’s comfortable for the Simpsons (plus pups Bogey and Bunker) for the typical day-to-day. A walkway between the living areas and owners’ suite creates a bridge of privacy, so when it comes time to host the children and grandchildren, auxiliary rooms offer a mix of both large and intimate spaces carved out for congregating. And even at 10,300 feet above sea level, the entire family can enjoy some extra R&R thanks to oxygen enrichment systems built into the bedrooms to help alleviate any altitude issues. Also indicative of the vernacular architecture is the team’s strategic mix of building materials. Stone, log siding with chinking, and multiple roofing substrates like CeDUR shake shingles and Corten steel all contribute to the ever-evolving mining town aesthetic. The same vocabulary of timber and stone is showcased throughout the abode to connect the interior to the exterior, as seen in the stunning hearth surrounds and lodgepole ceilings. This rich material palette tends to absorb light, but the team’s expert navigation of eastward and westward angles brightens up any dark corners. Upon entering the foyer, you’re graced by an inviting family room that features completely seamless multi-slide glass doors, creating an uninterrupted triptych of the Rocky Mountains. The residence is essentially etched into the hillside, so the team exposed as many rooms as possible to the amazing views and natural light. The dining room, also fully encased by sliding glass, lets the architectural elements shine while providing a connection to the outdoors all year round. In the kitchen, a dormer window shines a light on custom, circlesawn oak cabinets installed by Minnesota company Siewert. TEA2 also designed the cabinetry in the artfully crafted bar, complete with rustic touches of cowhide and rivets. A reclaimed live-edge countertop by Wood from the Hood (more Minnesota touches!) warms up the gathering space. “We were able to create a harmonious whole from so many unique elements by refining their intersections,” Schwartze explains. “We kept the integrity of each piece, celebrating the material for what it is.” The so-called Nest, a chalet-style hangout at the top of the hill, is where you’re likely to find the Simpsons catching epic sunsets after a full day of hiking, snowmobiling or skiing the runs that Bill made himself on their land. “There’s a true mountain town vibe here,” gush the owners — not just of Breckenridge, but of their own personal getaway. They credit the final result to an active partnership with TEA2, one that championed both the project’s eclectic nature and the pioneer spirit.

NATURE

NATURE AND NURTURE HOW TO BRING THE GREAT OUTDOORS IN. BY LAURA SCHARA P H OTO G R A P H Y BY V I C TO R I A C A M P B E L L

WE INSTINCTIVELY KNOW THAT NATURE IS NURTURING. IT

has been studied and confirmed that stepping outside to feel the sun on your face, sitting by a lake or an ocean, hugging a tree, or just digging your hands and feet in the dirt has a positive effect on our mood and mental health. So why not bring that same Zen energy into your home? Adding natural elements to your abode is easy to do and has an incredible upside. Here are five simple ways to nature up your home.

Plants

This may seem obvious, but flora is my top go-to for naturally improving your space. Plants are known to create a soothing environment and can lift your mood. The power of plants doesn’t stop there; even caring for them reduces stress — hence why so many of us love gardening. If you feel like you don’t have a green thumb, start simple with small, easy-care options or even an indoor herb garden. I originally purchased some small fiddle-leaf fig trees from a local nursery a few years ago, and today, they’re almost six feet tall. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching them grow and appreciate the life they bring to my house. If you’re a frequent traveler or snowbird, there are also plenty of beautiful faux plants that look very real. I own many faux plants myself as the more green I see, the happier I feel.

Petrified Wood

Another favorite element to nature up your home is ancient petrified wood. Consider yourself lucky if you find some along a trail or in a riverbed as petrified wood can range from 20 million to 300 million years old. I have collected some during my outdoor adventures, and I like to showcase it on bookshelves to remind me of the special occasion when I found it. Not up for a scavenger hunt? You can purchase petrified wood decor from

retailers like West Elm. If that’s not your thing, try other natural elements such as driftwood, rocks and crystals.

Photography

You’re already going to adorn your walls with art, so why not make it natural? I love the idea of a black-and-white nature photography wall. Use a hallway or stairwell to showcase images you’ve taken on your own adventures or purchased from a professional photographer you admire. Whether it’s photos of wildlife, ocean waves, sunsets or trees, it all points you in the direction of happiness.

Scents

One of my top hacks to bring the outdoors in is scent. Incense and essential oils can make it smell like you’ve transported a forest right into your living room. For incense, I love P.F. Candle Co., which offers scents like cedar, sagebrush, sandalwood and teakwood. And Norden Goods makes some of my favorite essential oils. I start up my diffuser and light incense every Saturday morning to bring my mind immediately into the woods as I drink my morning coffee.

Fresh Air

Finally, open up your windows for some fresh air. Indoor air is just not the same as a fresh breeze. Bonus if your home is surrounded by trees as they boast natural stress-relief compounds called phytoncides. Pines and evergreens are loaded with them — another plus to living in our evergreen state. Laura Schara is a lifelong outdoor enthusiast and cohost of the television series Minnesota Bound.

Baldamar marks the turning point where we usher in the new standard for style, service and steak. It means the menu’s made with old-world craft at its core and modern day meat eaters in mind — with flavors forged in fire and folded into pure primal perfection. It’s where every steak is aged 40 days and 40 nights for a taste of biblical proportion, and where crazy-fresh seafood means it was caught during your morning commute. At the bar sits every spirit imaginable, and someone who isn’t afraid to use them. This is more than a new steakhouse. It’s a line in the sand. It’s not just where you celebrate special occasions. It’s where you create them.

impressive 115% increase in searches for “barkitecture” from 2020, while interest in “catifying” our homes has grown fourfold. Top brands and designers are coming in hot to meet the demand. Jason Wu recently collaborated with direct-to-consumer retailer Cat Person on a “haute cat-ure” (get it?) collection of feline essentials that was an instant hit. “Cats are kind of like my best friends,” says the famed fashion designer. “I wanted to design accessories and care items that a human being would want to use.” Similarly, animal lovers can’t get enough of brands like British furniture company MADE, which offers pet-sized replicas of its best-selling sofas. That’s right — you and Fluffy can recline on matching settees if you’re so inclined. Those in need of some interiors inspiration can simply look to the stars. Paris Hilton recently had a doggy-sized replica of her massive manse built for her famed pups, replete with heating and designer furniture, to the tune of $300,000. Lady Gaga, meanwhile, treats her très chic French bulldogs to Versace linens. Actress Priyanka Chopra and crooner Nick Jonas’ Chihuahua, Diana, likes to lounge on a mini sofa that looks straight out of a Victorian estate. The phenomenon even got the reality TV treatment with Barkitecture, which had an eight-episode stint on streamer Quibi in 2020. The show followed contractor (and former Bachelorette contestant) Tyler Cameron and interior designer Delia Kenza as they created ostentatious dog digs for celebrity clientele. Actress Rumer Willis’ pooch, Dolores, got a custom Airstream-esque trailer. Singer Teyana Taylor’s two hounds were treated to a stylish shed complete with a chandelier and custom portraits. And Real Housewives star Kyle Richards’ pack of pups now enjoys a mini version of her $8-million California estate. But barkitecture isn’t just about the flash — in fact, most of the time, it’s downright functional. Take, for example, the at-home dog wash. Not to be confused with the oversize stainless steel tub you’ve no doubt seen at the vet clinic, this elevated element is the canine equivalent of the steam showers and deep soaking tubs we humans lust after for ourselves. Tastemaker and Gather at Home author Monika Hibbs’ custom-tiled dog bath has become a statement feature in her house. But when she was building it in 2020, inspiration was hard to come by. “There were maybe two photos I could dig

of three, he has his own swanky suite with a custom bed, a digital fireplace and an uncanny portrait hanging on the wall. The best part of all? This lucky boy isn’t even human; he’s a golden retriever. Teddy’s lavish lifestyle encapsulates the so-called barkitecture trend — the concept of designing your home with your pets in mind — that has quickly become the cat’s meow. Despite its name, barkitecture isn’t just for pups. It describes any space that undergoes an animal-friendly upgrade, from surprisingly chic cat climbing walls to unexpectedly extravagant guinea pig habitats. Done right, it’s tastefully sumptuous and aesthetically pleasing. Sure, it could be considered over the top, but it’s all relative. After all, who deserves the royal treatment more than our precious pooches? Spoiling our four-legged friends isn’t new, but treating them to fancy homewares is. HGTV star and interior designer Taniya Nayak traces the trend’s explosion to an uptick in pet adoptions during the pandemic, when millions of people added animal companions to their households. Couple that with our newfound appreciation of work-from-home culture, and you’ve got a recipe for canine-oriented change. But Nayak was ahead of the curve. When she welcomed her English bulldog, Flynn, into her life six years ago, he took over the house with his “adorably grumpy disposition.” Intent on ensuring her abode didn’t look like a hot mess, the design expert opted for unique pet accessories that complemented her refined style. Case in point: The pup eats exclusively from a Le Creuset doggy dish. Today, this philosophy has officially entered the mainstream consciousness. Our pooches are snoozing in white sherpa beds, while our kitties ascend climbing trees that resemble art sculptures. We proud pet parents, in turn, are snapping pics and sharing them on social media. The proof is in the numbers: Pinterest cites an

up,” she recalls. These days, her design is Pinterest famous. But does this fixture actually see any action? An emphatic yes. It’s so practical, Hibbs gushes, that it gets used multiple times a day, especially because it serves double duty as a foot bath for the whole family. Another hot barkitecture element? Fabulous feeding stations, as expertly executed by Orange County–based firm Blackband Design. The team’s 2017 project has garnered attention from Better Homes & Gardens along with countless interiors enthusiasts. And it’s easy to see why: It’s built into a recessed section of the kitchen island and composed of Calacatta Eccellente marble to match the countertops and backsplash. “We took the idea even further with a pot filler for easy water bowl refills,” explains interior designer Rachel Azzolina. On top of that, the height and size of the bowls meet the unique specs of the owners’ two golden retrievers, fondly dubbed daughters. “Our clients dream big for their families,” she reasons. Since then, Azzolina and team have fielded barkitecture requests galore. Whether creating a catio or a doggy dream house, their goal is to “mimic and flow” with their clients’ established style. We humans care a lot about that sort of thing — but do animals? Probably not, say the pros. But although plush furnishings aren’t necessarily high up on our pets’ list of prerogatives (or so we think), functional renovations can certainly make their lives better. Consider catification, the fast track to feline happiness. Renowned cat behavior and wellness expert Jackson Galaxy, who hosts the Animal Planet hit show My Cat From Hell, coined the term back in 2013. It’s all about devising a stimulating environment for Princess that doesn’t “wreck your aesthetic,” he explains. His cat superhighway concept lets felines navigate a room without touching the ground. Why? “Because they need vertical spaces,” he notes. Not only does this ease cats’ tendency toward territorial aggression, but it also lends itself to some seriously innovative design projects. Contractor Peter Cohen is a catification king. Galaxy (a friend of his) describes his space as “unparalleled” in its feline-forward amenities. And he’s right: Cohen’s Santa Barbara abode puts Teddy Lower’s tricked-out bedroom to shame. With catification touches galore — superhighways, cocoons, scratching posts and the

like — the home is the ultimate feline sanctuary. So what’s the case for canines? Galaxy, who has three dogs of his own, says that their “territorial needs are less than cats’” because — in animal expert speak — they “already own the joint.” He goes on to explain that “most of what you can do to enrich a dog’s life is outside,” like going on daily strolls through the neighborhood. That’s not to say you can’t get creative or that your pooch won’t enjoy some special accommodations. Just look at Architecture for Dogs, a brand conceived by Japanese graphic designer Kenya Hara. The team comprises renowned architects and designers who create high-quality furnishings and accessories geared toward unique breed characteristics and behaviors. Yes, their creations look like high-level artwork, but it’s all grounded in insight. To wit: There’s a sloping play station for dachshunds, who famously have difficulty climbing due to their super short legs. A mirrored structure is primed for poodle reflection gazing, as the breed is thought to have remarkable self-awareness. Every good girl and boy deserves a custom creation this good — no species left behind. As it becomes de rigueur for pet parents to devise luxe lodgings for their furry friends, chances are your hamster or lizard will have their time in the spotlight, too. And our favorite brands will no doubt be there to capitalize on the craze. There’s big money in it, after all. The pet industry rakes in serious bank year after year — north of $100 billion and growing, per Morgan Stanley. When it comes to over-the-top digs for our dogs, it’s hard to say if this trend is truly for our benefit or theirs. But really, does it matter? We can all agree that design elements that let us pamper our precious pets are an easy way to up the feel-good vibes of any home. Thanks to the barkitecture craze, the idea of being sent to the doghouse these days is no longer a viable threat — but instead a welcome invitation.

asks home industry leaders to posit what hasn’t yet been considered. “It’s a balance of styles that still pushes the boundaries,” says Brandon Berg, Andersen Windows & Doors Senior Vice President of Research, Development and Innovation. “Each of these experts is what we call a ‘possibility maker’ because they’re not following trends — they’re setting them.” Architect Cavin Costello reframes the pioneer spirit in the Southwest, while builder Jeff Sweenor inspires the next generation with time-honored techniques along the Eastern Seaboard. Atlanta-based interior designer Jessica Davis draws inspiration from her globetrotting upbringing. And California artist/designer Justina Blakeney encourages us to get in touch with our own creativity and, in turn, consider what contemporary design means to us. Berg explains that Andersen is uniquely positioned to deliver on those dreams: “We want to work with people who are bold in design and performance, because that’s exactly what our products are.”

JUSTINA BLAKENEY DESIGNER

“Confidence, creativity and joy are contagious,” Justina Blakeney affirms. Perhaps that’s why her lifestyle brand, Jungalow, floods some 1.6 million Instagram followers’ feeds with contemporary, bohemian designs. The spirit to create — and to share and celebrate that creativity — has been ingrained in the entrepreneur from the very beginning. Growing up in Berkeley, California, she remembers spending her days in Tilden Regional Park and her evenings drawing and painting. (Even today, many of her designs start as doodles or watercolors.) Her parents, both developmental psychologists, supported and nurtured her artistic interests from an early age. “They allowed me to simply be myself,” the designer, artist, author and speaker shares. “It was about following my heart and exploring what I loved.” After graduating from UCLA, she followed her heart to Italy, where she spent seven years working in Tuscany and Florence. “I have always admired how Italian designers mix the old with new, or bright colors with neutrals,” she muses. Her passport was well worn by the time she returned to the West Coast in 2009. The designer excitedly moved into her first solo abode, a 1920s bungalow in Los Angeles, and infused it with greenery and a connection to the outdoors evocative of her childhood. As she peppered her new place with bold colors, prismatic patterns and earthy textures, she invited others along for the ride on her blog, Jungalow (a fusion of “jungle” and “bungalow”). “My interpretation of contemporary design is whatever moves us in the moment,” she offers. “It’s less of a choice and more an osmosis of things coming together when we’re feeling our most creative and inspired.” For the artist, that happens when she’s hands-on in a project — like transforming her blog into a thriving digital platform. Jungalow has since blossomed into a small but mighty team of women encouraging their community to tap into their own creativity. Blakeney makes it easy to get started, noting that even small changes can affect how we live. “Think about the activities and routines you want your home to support,” she says. That’s how you figure out what you need. Then comes the fun part: “playing with colors, patterns and textures that light you up.” Design is an experiment, one that comes fully to life once surrounded with people, pets — and plants! (There are 52 and counting in Blakeney’s home.) Plus the brand is committed to planting at least two trees with every order. The good news is you can take some of Blakeney’s free spirit with you anywhere, thanks to product lines spanning furniture, decor, textiles, stationery, gifts and accessories, all so shoppable from jungalow.com and the exclusive Opalhouse Designed with Jungalow collection available at Target. The good-vibes-only nature of her style is largely what makes Jungalow so successful, because it’s so relatable. One thing is certain: It’s Blakeney’s wild world, and we’re all welcome to join in the fun.

CAVIN COSTELLO

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROEHNER + RYAN

ARCHITECT

Two days after Cavin Costello earned his master’s degree in architecture from Northeastern University, he packed his car and moved across the country to Phoenix, sight unseen. At the peak of the 2009 recession, it was a total leap of faith. But then again, since when has the westward spirit been wary of the unknown? Soon thereafter, he met Claire Aton, another recent grad who was equally passionate about improving the architectural future of her hometown. Their quick connection and the fickle job market paved the way for several months of day trips to experience the state’s rich history. They discovered an undeniable pioneer spirit, first harnessed by the region’s ranchers and miners. It’s a spirit they celebrate by honoring the past and inspiring the future through their firm, the Ranch Mine. “The ranchers and miners serve as our inspiration to design spaces that afford us the opportunity to imagine beyond what we see,” says Costello, who’s now married to his fellow adventurer. The husbandand-wife team first gained notoriety thanks to a 2011 Arizona Republic story that highlighted renovations they’d completed on their house. And then, the calls came in fast. People were eager to transform their own abodes from the unknown to the inspired. Costello learned early on that transformation is as close as your own two hands; his father, a civil engineer, built their family home in rural Connecticut. Suffice to say, his pioneer spirit had early roots. Now, the Ranch Mine is a standout in the Valley and beyond for the team’s ability to break the boundaries of conventional thinking. “If your house had a mission statement, what would it be?” Costello posits. That fresh mindset draws in thoughtful clients who are emboldened to “build a house for their passions.” For one couple, that meant an integration of music, yoga and sustainability. The solar-powered structure sits at just 12.5 feet tall, preserving neighbors’ mountain views. In place of a formal dining area, a stunning piano room serves as a central space. A generous fruit and vegetable garden complements the courtyard. And a unique utilization of windows gives the yoga studio a secret. The obvious choice would have been floor-to-ceiling, but Costello’s contemporary approach kept the compact windows close to the floor, revealing the desert vistas as a reward for a truly grounded yoga practice. “At its essence, contemporary design is basically free of style,” the architect explains. “It must respond to people, place, culture and climate.” This belief helped earn the Ranch Mine a 2019 HGTV Designer of the Year Award for the firm’s Red Rocks project, a residence clinging to the side of Camelback Mountain. The 1970s Spanish Colonial Revival was a perfect example of style over function, so the team reconfigured the entire layout and simplified the additive features. Now, the showstoppers include large expanses of glass and more than 2,000 square feet of exterior patios — welcoming a connection to the outdoors and the famous Arizona sunsets, all with a pioneer spirit soaked in.

JESSICA DAVIS INTERIOR DESIGNER

Artful Living

PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY FOLLOWILL AND AARON GRANT

Jessica Davis has always been design-obsessed. When she was 12, she wrote a letter to Southern Living magazine, detailing her backyard renovation ideas, including hand-drawn landscape plans. “The editor did write me back,” laughs Davis, who has since transformed that childhood passion into awardwinning hardware company Nest Studio and design firm Atelier Davis. Her perspective is largely influenced by her time living around the world. She grew up in Sydney, Hong Kong and Dallas, and after earning degrees from Princeton and the New England School of Art & Design, spent her early career working for a large hospitality design firm on the East and West coasts. Now settled in Atlanta with her husband and two young children, Davis is highly sought after for her creative contemporary vision. The designer, whose thesis focused on urban planning and the modern American home, approaches projects from both an aesthetic and a practical standpoint. Each space is meant to be truly livable, with an inventive mix of luxurious and accessible design. Davis first developed this dynamic blend working as a producer on the TV show Bob Vila’s Home Again, where she sourced furniture, decor and materials. “I watched Bob Vila growing up, so the chance to work for him felt like a dream,” she shares. But she was eager to realize her potential, and an opportunity to create hardware for a friend’s lighting company came at just the right time. Nest Studio earned support quickly. “I was into blogging and was an early adopter of Pinterest,” says Davis, which helped drive traffic to her online shop. Two product lines have now grown to 10 and are featured in 60+ show rooms internationally. The collections celebrate her love of mixed materials (like acrylic and brass in the Transparency series) and layers of dimension (as seen in the handpolished metals of the Step series). And over at Atelier Davis, her team injects personality into spaces that tell a story about the people who live there. Both studios are entirely women-owned and are operated by a team of mothers. “As a mom, I wanted to support work/life balance for other talented working moms,” Davis asserts. “It’s something that’s near and dear to my heart.” And it’s something that’s a direct response to environment — not unlike her approach to design. As needs change, contemporary design responds. “To me, contemporary means design that’s happening now, in the specific time we’re in,” she muses. She notes that, like so many people, the pandemic accelerated her need for a functional everything-athome lifestyle — ergo, a forthcoming addition to her abode that will skew more contemporary than the rest of the residence. It includes a stronger connection to the outdoors and a more open floor plan than you’d typically see in a midcentury home. And finally, there’s her studio space: a “glass box” office that will sit upstairs and channel the steel frame windows Davis grew up admiring as a kid in Hong Kong, where it all began.

JEFF SWEENOR

PHOTOGRAPHY BY NAT REA

BUILDER

Long before he built houses, Jeff Sweenor built teams. He rowed crew for the University of Rhode Island and helped earn a 1984 national title. By 1987, he was competing on the U.S. team, training for the following year’s Olympic Games. “Rowing is an incredibly team-oriented sport that relies on perfect synchrony,” he shares. It’s this mentality that inspired him to found his eponymous design and build firm just two years later in 1989. But champions aren’t built in vacuums. In Sweenor’s case, they’re built in chocolate shops. He credits much of his work ethic to growing up with his family’s fifth generation candy business. By the time he was in high school, they expanded to Wakefield, Rhode Island, converting an old commercial office into their shop. Not only was the candy made from scratch, so too were the renovations and even the equipment. Sweenor learned the basics of carpentry, plumbing, electrical and refrigeration. He built everything with his dad, including a 40-foot cooling tunnel for “chocolate-covered anything.” When the time came to purchase his first home, he chose to build it instead. “I was never afraid to take something head-on because I grew up with my family’s entrepreneurial energy,” explains Sweenor, who teamed up with local pros to construct the abode. He meticulously learned the craft alongside them and has honed those skills for more than 30 years. Throughout that time, Sweenor Builders has grown from developing spec and starter houses to creating beautiful legacy homes that dot the New England coastline. Now touting 65+ staff members and an in-house millwork and cabinetry shop, the company is a standout for its seamless — one might say synchronous — integration of capabilities that makes for a rewarding client experience. One project in particular celebrates quality craftsmanship through contemporary design. Built in 1971, the residence’s congested floor plan and scattered windows detracted from riverfront views and clear sightlines. The innovative renovation retains the coastal character, while sleek exterior materials like black vertical longboard, AZEK panels and cypress cladding give it a modern upgrade. The firm optimized overhead space by utilizing a low-pitch roof and clerestory windows to let light fill the newly expanded interiors. “Clean lines and the ability to complement natural surroundings make the house one of the most contemporary on the river,” notes Sweenor, who gets a glimpse of his team’s handiwork every time he rows by. The builder’s dedication to both craftsmanship and community is palpable. “Every day, I’m striving to be the best in the world at something,” he shares. “It’s much more than a habit; it’s a way of life.” His two adult children have since joined the team — a sweet homage to his family business upbringing. Sweenor also connects with local students, offering on-the-job opportunities as future career paths. “These are skills you’ll use forever,” he says excitedly to the next team he’s building.

GREEN GODDESS INSIDE LOTUSLAND, MADAME GANNA WALSKA’S CALIFORNIAN BOTANICAL PARADISE.

TO EXPERIENCE LOTUSLAND IS TO

appreciate the idiosyncratic character of its creator, Madame Ganna Walska, an aspiring opera singer whose lasting legacy turned out to be not on the stage, but in the soil. Her uniquely individual stamp is still very apparent, yet the garden that survives her has evolved and grown, as gardens do, and acquired a more complex identity. Even those of us familiar with it still struggle to define what makes it so magical. Perhaps its refusal to be easily categorized is part of the mystery. As it has evolved as a nonprofit public garden over the past few decades since Madame Walska’s death, there has been a concerted effort toward sustainable horticultural practices and developing a sustainable business model. The botanical collections have grown and aged, however, without losing their powerful and sometimes exotic identities. There are some new additions and others have been expanded or refreshed, but the whimsy and character that were the inspiration for the original garden survive and assure Lotusland a special status as one of the most remarkable and magical places in the world. –Marc Appleton (Foreword)

BLUE GARDEN

It has been said that Madame Walska was an artist who used plants as her brush and the land as her canvas. Perhaps nowhere in Lotusland is that artistic sensibility — one could call it a painterly approach — as sensitively deployed as in the Blue Garden. Defined by a palette of powdery, silvery shades that encompass a staggering array of tonalities, this inviting garden features a surprising range of grasses, cedars and palms that somehow unite to form a harmonious whole. The thought of a monochrome garden might at first seem a bit dull, for what do we think about when we think about gardens if not a vibrant array of colors? But what makes the Blue Garden — and the vogue for single-color gardens that goes back to at least the 19th century — so compelling is the richness, variety and visual excitement that can be teased out of this singular approach.

JAPANESE GARDEN

Peace, tranquility and harmony are hallmarks of the traditional Japanese garden, as is the seeming simplicity that belies the careful thought that goes into its planning and care. Covering more than 1.5 acres, the Japanese Garden at Lotusland is also the largest of its themed landscapes. Gardener Frank Fujii balanced Madame Walska’s flair for the dramatic with his penchant for simplicity, advocating a harmonious balance of plantings, stones, and other natural and manmade elements. Design principles and techniques reflect the Edo era–style strolling garden, including shakkei, where the illusion of space is manipulated to capture a distant view and make it an integral part of the immediate landscape. The sleight of hand works beautifully to create a microcosm of natural beauty. Cedars, pines and other conifers reinforce an Eastern sensibility, while Moonrise Japanese maples, Akebono cherry trees and Chinese fringe trees add texture and color that evolves throughout the year.

LOTUS GARDEN

Mysterious, exotic and celebrated for its beauty, the lotus is among the oldest flowering plants in existence. As such, it possesses a rich history of deep social and spiritual significance in both the ancient and modern worlds. In ancient Greece, the lotus flower represented innocence, purity and modesty. In Hinduism and Buddhism, it is considered the most sacred flower and is a symbol of life, renewal and transcendence. Like most culturally meaningful plants and animals, this symbolism is rooted in actual elements of its biology. The lotus starts as a seed in the mud. It grows many rhizomes before emerging into the air and blooming, revealing a beautiful flower unmarred by the muddy waters from which it arose, and in which it is still rooted. The mud is said to symbolize the basis of life (the physical world), while the flower represents spiritual enlightenment. Its life cycle, growing out of murky waters into the air, symbolizes transcendence — another reason Madame Walska may have been drawn to the plant.

Gummy Grande and Heidi Ault

Friends of the Institute Gal pals Elizabeth “Gummy” Grande and Heidi Ault love to throw a good party. So it made sense that when Ault joined Friends of the Institute — an organization of members dedicated to supporting, enhancing and sustaining the collection, programs and influence of the Minneapolis Institute of Art — and was tapped to oversee Mia’s annual Art in Bloom preview party, that she would ask Grande to join her. Grande’s mother-in-law had been a Mia docent, so it was an easy yes from her — though they were both a little worried about living up to the event’s reputation. “Art in Bloom is such a huge celebration because to have a treasure like Mia free and open to the public is just incredible,” says Grande. “I think of it as a beloved event that’s now really a part of the city, expanded past the museum.” This year’s jubilee included a festive seated dinner in Mia’s Jade Corridor. Then the duo learned how inclusive and easy it is to be a Friends member, raising money for bus transportation for schoolchildren and supporting Mia as a free, available treasure trove of art for the greater Twin Cities community. “The Friends are open to absolutely anyone,” Grande enthuses. “You can volunteer as little or as much as you’d like.” Members also get special access to lectures and other educational events. This year, as part of the Friends’ centennial celebration, the now-seasoned pair has been busy planning a fashion show for the vaunted volunteer group to take place in October. Additional festivities dot the calendar, including a Cargill Gallery exhibition, a walking tour of the historic Washburn-Fair Oaks neighborhood, and a partnership with the Hennepin History Museum to view artifacts and photos of the first Friends president. Plus the joy and life that the Art in Bloom flora brings will be permanently memorialized with a fitting gift funded by the Friends: the painting “Still Life with Dahlias, Zinnias, Hollyhocks and Plums” by Eugène Delacroix. “How cool is it that your organization is responsible for a signature artwork that’s so special and beautiful?” Ault exclaims. “It’s super exciting to be a part of this legacy and to know it will be in the museum for hundreds of years to come.”

Alex Lelchuk Lelch Audio Video

Alex Lelchuk and his team of 37 in-house lighting and audio/visual designers, engineers, technicians, and project managers are helping architects, builders, and residential and commercial clients see the light — literally. He started his business in his basement a decade ago, focusing on smart home automation. But then he discovered lighting was a truly underserved market segment in the Twin Cities. So over the past four years, Lelchuk has added lighting design and specification services to his shop’s tech-savvy lineup. “No other companies are bringing lighting in-house locally, and it’s not readily available in the marketplace,” he explains. It’s true: Lighting has all too often been an afterthought until very recently. Because of this, the training and understanding necessary to achieve great lighting are hard to come by. “Lighting should be personalized to each space but so often is overlooked, and the same standardized product ends up being installed everywhere,” Lelchuk says. His search for a simple solution led to his own light-bulb moment: If his company could demonstrate lighting, clients could more easily navigate their needs. And so the lighting lab was born, featuring in-ceiling fixtures as well as undercabinet options, LED strips, toe kicks and more. Customers can compare good/better/best options side by side and truly understand the difference between canned lighting, wall washing and grazing, and the like. “Our team is educated and certified, and we’ve partnered with a variety of manufacturers to continue our education,” he notes. That includes innovations as complex as lighting that mimics our circadian rhythms. But most importantly, Lelch focuses on helping clients, architects and builders with lighting schedules and install details, so that the technology doesn’t get in the way of the homebuilding and design process. “We are addressing the fundamentals from lighting design, applying higher quality fixtures and the right effects, ambiance, aesthetic and look,” Lelchuk concludes.

Phillip Radke, MD Lagos Aesthetics

Phillip Radke, MD, knows a thing or two about the windows to our souls. After all, he’s an oculofacial plastic and reconstructive surgeon (a branch of ophthalmology). And he has zeroed in on what makes people look refreshed, energetic and youthful. So when, at Edina Eye, he was tapped to help develop Lagos Aesthetics — a department focused on cosmetics of the face — he set straight to work. “It’s my wheelhouse when it comes to what I do,” he says. “I focus and trained extensively on enhancements of the face, particularly surrounding the eye and its many unique structures.” Radke offers surgical solutions suited to each patient’s individual facial concerns, including upper-forehead, mid-face and full-face surgery. And with a team of aestheticians and a nurse injector he trained himself, Lagos also features a broad spectrum of Botox/fillers, laser treatments and more. “I have very stringent expectations with our staff and knowing they’re well-trained and versed in anatomy and the medicine behind it,” he explains. “We use tried-and-true, evidence-based medicine as our guide, whether it’s surgically based care, our approach to laser procedures, or Botox/filler dosage and placement.” This intellectual prowess is complemented by an environment where patients truly feel like family, Radke says. The tightknit team makes sure everyone feels welcome, comfortable, and empowered to ask questions and return to the office to achieve any goal, at any time. “We want our patients to look refreshed, rejuvenated and more youthful,” he notes. “We want them to feel like they’re turning back the clock on themselves, using the least aggressive way to get the results they want.”

Nicole Benjamin-Fink, PhD Conservation Beyond Borders

In the past 94 days, the world has lost 74 rhinos. That statistic is currently fueling urgency for Nicole Benjamin-Fink, PhD, founder of Conservation Beyond Borders. Without intervention, our children’s generation will not see the majestic rhino in the wild — or at all. “Iconic species are teetertottering on the brink of extinction,” she says. Conservation Beyond Borders comprises a group of researchers who are developing science that helps inform decision makers from the local to the international level as they address the most challenging conservation concerns of our time. Everything starts locally, BenjaminFink explains, by gathering expert knowledge in individual communities from all stakeholders involved. Then, regionally, decision makers benefit from understanding and quantifying tradeoffs in actionable conservation strategies. “That’s where we come in,” she notes. “Conservation Beyond Borders provides decision makers with road maps and procedural guidelines to adopt and enforce conservation-based behaviors that are predictable in terms of success and impact.” That is to say: The organization helps identify guaranteed strategies to save wildlife — alongside human populations — that will actually work. But real life is more complex than estimates and numbers, which is why she uses machine learning and mathematical algorithms to help quantify the cultural, social and economic tradeoffs. “For decision makers, it serves as infrastructure for making choices about their conservation strategy that are science-based, informed and effective,” she affirms. “Two defining insights from the past three decades of scholarship are that actionable strategies are needed to reverse extinction triquetrous in locations where humans and wildlife coexist, and that conservationbased solutions fall short when failing to employ cohesive guidelines that address peoples’ livelihoods,” she continues. “The poaching crisis has left the shores of Africa and Asia. The illegal wildlife trade not only has a devastating impact on our planet, but there’s also a revolving door between rhino poaching, human trafficking, the sex trade and political instability. In a time of social environmental responsibility, our wildlife seems to have been left behind.” The hopeful news, Benjamin-Fink says, is that there are actionable strategies that can reverse the extinction trajectory and bring species back from the brink. “Our impact is measured by the number of wildlife we save, the number of qualified wildlife veterinarians we train and the number of wildlife-based jobs that really do change lives,” she declares. “The thing to think about is how we can best employ machine learning to quantify the data that’s captured by expert knowledge in order to produce effective conservation strategies that consider wildlife, the environment, economic frameworks and the human population that lives within those areas.” Those looking to support Conservation Beyond Borders can purchase tickets for the organization’s gala, taking place in June. Attendees will be immersed in an interactive experience with African wildlife at a private Minnesota estate, all to benefit wildlife.

PUBLISHER’S TAKE WE FINALLY MADE IT TO SUMMER AFTER WHAT FELT LIKE

a never-ending winter — on top of the past few years of waves of anxiety, isolation and tragedy on the global stage and at home. We can’t erase the emotional turmoil that this time has burdened humanity with, but we can take care of one another as we navigate life moving forward. Have grace with yourself and others going into the summer. We all deserve some fresh air and positivity where we can find it. This season, I’m embracing alfresco dining, time spent in my garden, weekend mornings at the farmers’ market, road trips to see family and hopefully the chance to jump into Lake Superior. Mostly, I’m trying to stay in the present moment as my daughter grows incredibly quickly right before my eyes. There is nothing more magical than seeing her world expand, one adventure at a time. A few things that are inspiring me this season: Chic English garden style is calling my name. This beautiful bespoke set featuring fabric from Flora Soames’ Pavilion Collection has me rethinking my little outdoor space and embracing the contrast of flora and stripes. Matilda Goad & Co Scallop Linen Napkins are the perfect pop of color to contrast against my burl wood dining room table and incorporate a bit of maximalism. I’m currently on a mission to have fewer, better things in my home. I’ve been loving handmade ceramics for both their beauty and function. Rachel Saunders Ceramics’ elegant pieces often sell out quickly because they’re so highly sought after. Keep an eye out for new creations from this interdisciplinary artist. The Of Gardens Candle by Moro Dabron is both a beautiful decorative vessel and a remarkable home scent with top notes of bergamot, lemon and neroli. Once the wax has melted down, the stoneware vase is perfect for a few short garden clippings or is a standout simply displayed on its own year-round. And finally, a really good SPF is absolutely essential for summer adventures. Tower 28 SunnyDays is affordable, expertly formulated and great for sensitive skin.

My very best,

Publisher
