ON PURPOSE My father recently passed away. His death was very sudden, and it caused me to pause and contemplate how quickly life can change. Dad didn’t have his affairs in order to say the least, and the amount of unnecessary stuff that he had accumulated was incredible. More startling was the fact that he did not have a plan for the end of his life. His best friend later told me that Dad thought that he was going to live forever and that there was time ahead to get matters in order. Things were not good between us, and I have had a hard time sorting out which grief is the worst: the shock of what just happened, the ache of what had never been or the void of what will never be. My mom asked me to write Dad’s obituary, and this forced me to reflect on my own life and how I want to live and be remembered. The outcome of this ordeal has inspired me to become more intentional about my choices. It has also prompted me to get my own business in order, to have a better plan for my family and for the next stage of life. I have decided to take more time off work and see more of the world. So I started making a list of all the places I want to visit. But then I realized that ideas like travel bucket lists and books like 1,000 Places to See Before You Die are flawed — it’s just unrealistic to see that many places. Instead, I settled on a few destinations and began to focus on when and how to go. Welcome to the travel issue of Artful Living, one of our favorite annual themes. It is chock-full of ideas and inspiration on where to go, from South Africa to the Galápagos Islands to a James Beard Foundation cruise. Our goal is to inspire our readers with a fine collection of vacation possibilities. Be sure to check out our two-part feature about power in the North. Anne Roderique-Jones has written about some of our most talented people. Although some of these influencers no longer live around here, their experiences here helped shape their highly successful careers. And don’t miss Rudy Maxa’s play-by-play of the region’s greatest falls from grace. Speaking of imaginative stars, we thank Mandy Ebert, our creative director, for elevating our artistic expression and bringing an improved level of design and sophistication to our pages. It’s a new year and a good time to get matters in order, pare down, settle relationships and become more purposeful. Consider planning a trip somewhere new or returning to your favorite destination. The best travels often involve spontaneous and serendipitous experiences that aren’t easily described or replicated. Cheers,

“Although Louise planned every picture meticulously, her photographs look like she just serendipitously chose the perfect moment to snap the girl with her scarf blowing in the wind,” explains Valerie Steele, director and chief curator of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology. “They were more like stories than portraits.” Indeed, this photograph is equal parts glamorous and fanciful, recalling a bygone era of travel. Imperial Glamour FABERGÉ’S DECORATIVE ART EVOKES AN ERA OF SUPREME CRAFTSMANSHIP. BY MARGUERITE HAPPE
For many, Fabergé’s whimsical, intricately crafted Easter eggs represent the extent of their knowledge about the legendary Russian jeweler. Indeed, the works created for the imperial family between 1885 and 1916 are considered the last great commissioned objets d’art. But Peter Carl Fabergé’s impact on both the tradition of the artist-jeweler and the influence of Russian decorative art was far more pronounced, explains Vladimir von Tsurikov, director of the Museum of Russian Art in Minneapolis. “Fabergé incorporated the techniques and aesthetics of the European masters into a uniquely Russian expression,” he notes. “In our Unknown Fabergé exhibit, which runs through February 26, we’ve curated a collection of 80 objects that transcend and enhance the imperial eggs,” says Von Tsurikov. “They have never before been presented in this way and likely will never be again.” From “Ice Pendant,” crafted in rock crystal and diamonds, to the intricate “Sedan Chair,” laden with mother-of-pearl and enamel, the museum will showcase works created by the Fabergé workshop, many from private collections and on display for the first time. “Right now, diplomatic discourse between Russia and the United States is suffering,” notes Von Tsurikov. “So when Minnesotans visit exhibits like this one, they are not only honoring a long and extraordinary imperial and cultural tradition but are actively working to prevent cultural exchange and relationships from dissolving.”

DESIGN DRIVEN PLANSMATTER OFFERS ARCHITECTURALLY SIGNIFICANT VACATION RENTALS. B Y K AT E N E L S O N
Design-minded jet setters, the world is officially your oyster. That’s thanks in part to the Minneapolis duo who developed PlansMatter, which makes architecturally significant vacation rentals available for travelers to experience and appreciate. The company partners with homeowners to highlight hand-selected, high-style properties across the region, country and globe. “We believe good design can inspire and improve life in both small and large ways,” explain cofounders Connie Lindor and Scott Muellner, themselves both architects. “The more we elevate the importance of design, the better our lives — and the world — will be.” The PlansMatter team carefully curates the properties in its modern-focused portfolio, ensuring each abode has a unique “architectural intention and a story to tell.” Here are our picks for a design-driven stay.

GUNFLINT LAKE CABIN GRAND MARAIS
SADDLE PEAK HOUSE TOPANGA, CALIFORNIA
THE POLE HOUSE FAIRHAVEN, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA
The recipient of an AIA Minnesota Honor Award, this cozy cabin was conceived by Minneapolis architecture firm VJAA. The secluded home allows visitors to appreciate the simple things in life: taking in the surrounding fauna and flora, listening to the wood crackling in the fireplace, and letting go of the day’s worries with a much-needed sauna session.
Designed by Venice, California–based Sant Architects, this incredible abode sits amongst the Santa Monica Mountains overlooking the Pacific. Explains principal Michael J. Sant: “The house explores several oppositional relationships that combine to create a harmonious sense of balance and encourage a profoundly intimate experience of nature.” The property features a main house and studio, an infinity pool and hot tub, and California chicness to boot.
Built by Frank Dixon in the seventies and recently re-envisioned by Franco Fiorentini of F2 Architecture, this stunning structure is one of Australia’s most iconic homes. From its enviable spot suspended above Fairhaven Beach, the abode offers 200 degrees of oceanfront sightlines accompanied by the soothing sound of the waves crashing onto the shore.

PHOTOGRAPHY © DREAMSCAPES BY DAVID DREBIN, PUBLISHED BY TENEUES. “DREAMS OF CENTRAL PARK,” 2006, PHOTO © 2016 DAVID DREBIN. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.
The English language has no equivalent for the German word fernweh. But while the term may not be universal, the feeling certainly is. It’s an amped-up wanderlust, a gut-wrenching longing to experience far-off places, a homesickness for anyplace but home. Internationally renowned photographer David Drebin’s recently debuted Dreamscapes is the ultimate embodiment of this idea. The book epitomizes the phrase “A picture is worth a thousand words.” It is nearly devoid of text, save for brief captions describing what’s depicted in page after page of daydream-inspiring imagery. From the haunting “Hollywood Dreams” to the luxe “Luxembourg Gardens” to the ethereal “Tokyo Dusk,” Drebin’s treatment of destinations near and far casts them in a new light, leading readers to linger a little longer on each stunning spread. After graduating from New York City’s Parsons School of Design in 1996, Drebin became known for his compelling photography of celebrities, entertainers and other larger-than-life personalities. He considers himself a multidisciplinary artist “telling tales of seduction and escape around the world and back again.” Indeed, his work is as cinematic as it is dramatic. Destined for a prime locale on the coffee table, Dreamscapes is the perfect companion for a chilly winter morning. Grab a warm cup of joe, curl up with a cozy throw and give in to the fernweh.

Going Once, Going Twice A CHICAGO AUCTION HOUSE BIDS HIGH. BY W E N DY L U B OV I C H

In a fickle auction world that has been dominated for decades by the likes of Christie’s and Sotheby’s, enter Wright: a visionary Chicago company that has gaveled its way into collectors’ homes across the globe. Specializing in midcentury and contemporary design, the premier auction house’s artfully curated live sales have become an obsession for tastemakers, one lot at a time. “Our location makes us more accessible and allows a level of creativity unattainable elsewhere,” explains founder Richard Wright. “Our clients truly appreciate these qualities.” And the collectors flock to more than just the auction room. The company’s website, dubbed Wright Now, lets buyers lust after a Karl Springer étagère or a FontanaArte sconce 24/7. “Wright Now appeals to the buyer who might not want to bid in the heat of the moment,” Wright explains. “It also allows us more freedom to present really wonderful works by less well-known makers and designers who are not established in the auction market.” While Chicago is home base, casting auctions farther afield has paid off. Most notably, a July 2016 sale in New York City broke records when it took in more than $4 million for iconic furniture and tableware from the Four Seasons restaurant, with lots selling for four times their estimates. Among Wright’s favorite finds? “The Noguchi ‘Chess Table’ is sublime, melding function with pure form,” he explains. “‘Child’s Chair’ by Charles and Ray Eames is a diminutive, molded-plywood form that is modern and whimsical at the same time. And the Papa Bear chair and ottoman by Hans Wegner are simply so darn comfortable.”

Knock, Knock A KNOCKOUT CONCEPT FOR CREATING A FIRST IMPRESSION. B Y C H R I S P L A N TA N P H OTO G R A P H Y BY 2 N D T R U T H
With all the rings, beeps and buzzes connecting us to our electronic devices, I’m becoming a bit nostalgic for a good sturdy knock on the door. Not only is this a pleasing auditory alternative to the doorbell, it’s also a striking way to properly greet guests and signal to them the kind of home at which they have arrived. Knockers have been around since the invention of the door, but they’ve endured unique transformations in both form and symbolism over the centuries. We see evidence of their use in ancient Greece and in China, where dragon’s head knockers signify protection. People have long embellished their entryways with all varieties of designs, many of which are inspired by mythology, nature and religious teachings. Good-luck knockers are commonplace, taking the shape of cats, clovers, horseshoes, wishbones and all manner of charms. And the popular hand knocker is thought to be a symbol of the hand of Fatima, a talisman protecting the house from evil. The lion’s head in particular has always intrigued me. It’s so widely used that even new hardware and home-décor brands are offering their own unique versions. A fixture in human history since the beginning of recorded time, this figure has come to represent many things: pride, protection, strength and supremacy. While the noble beast is known as the king of the jungle, this knocker symbolizes that the lion serves the master within, suggesting the might of those who dwell behind the doors. Today, there are many ways to recapture the grandeur of our entrances. Knockers are a great way to signal the panache within. Traditional or modern, the door knocker is a well-placed calling card for you and your home’s style.

The Artist’s Way NATHAN JACKSON CARVES HIS WAY INTO HISTORY. B Y K AT E N E L S O N P H O T O G R A P H Y B Y T R O Y A . D AV I D S O N
Alaska Native Nathan Jackson is the world’s most accomplished totem-pole carver. But that wasn’t always his intent. He had finished his military service and was working as a commercial fisherman when a serious bout of pneumonia landed him in the hospital for 55 days. He found himself growing restless there, so he fashioned a carving knife and began creating miniature poles. Jackson realized he had a talent for the work, eventually attending the esteemed Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico, to hone his craft.

A rare recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts’ National Heritage Fellowship Award, the 78-year-old master carver has created more than 50 totem poles that stand tall across the world. Today, Jackson works out of the Edwin DeWitt Carving Center (colloquially known as the carving shed) situated in Saxman, a few miles from the southeast Alaskan town of Ketchikan. The village is also home to the world’s largest collection of standing totem poles, among them many of Jackson’s creations. He continues the traditions of the Chilkoot Tlingit tribe, often employing time-honored tools but occasionally using their modern counterparts when the job calls for it. Poles are typically made from a single Western red cedar log and require months on end to take from conception to completion. They feature symbolic animal, human and supernatural forms and are painted using natural pigments. Each tells a tale, often falling into one of three categories: commemorative, mortuary or ridicule. And this craft has become a family affair, it seems: Jackson’s son, Stephen, has long been considered a carving prodigy. Along with a handful of others, the two work side by side in the carving shed restoring existing poles and creating new ones, many of which are commissioned. The artists teach and learn from one another in the endless pursuit of excellence and in a concerted effort to ensure the enduring legacy of this important tribal tradition.

THE PORSCHE MACAN EXPERIENCE THREE TWIN CITIES TASTEMAKERS TAKE THE LUXURY SUV FOR A SPIN.

Andrea Swan, ARCHITECT Coming from a family of Eastern European descent with a preference for German-made cars, I was positively giddy at the chance to experience the Porsche Macan. I’ve always found the brand to be smart, sophisticated and luxuriously stylish. I am the mom of two young children and am often driving to construction sites, so practicality and safety are key. The Macan surpassed my expectations in many ways. The front and rear cameras made it so easy to move without stress or suspense. And when driving home in the first snowstorm of the year, I felt zero loss of traction. The dash was created by the same people who design for Boeing, I was told when I picked up the SUV. Not only is the design of the controls intuitive, which makes operation safer, but it’s cool, too. And the heated and cooled seats, heated steering wheel, and auto temperature controls all made for a comfortable ride. But the practical things are what the mom in me truly appreciated: the clever location of the rear-door opener. The perfect height for getting my toddler in and out of the car seat. The Wi-Fi that came in handy on longer trips. The large tank size and efficient gas mileage, which meant I only had to fill up every couple weeks (an activity I loathe). I’m admittedly not a huge auto aficionado. But now, after the opportunity to experience the Macan, I’m preparing myself for the emotional goodbye that will inevitably occur when I have to return it. It’s been a first-class Cinderella experience, and the ball is coming to its end. I may just have to consider keeping it so that the fantasy can continue.

Chris Plantan, CREATIVE DIRECTOR AND PRODUCT DESIGNER Porsche: It’s not just driving. It’s an experience. With its unrivaled beauty and proven performance, this illustrious brand has always piqued my interest. So I was thrilled at the opportunity to participate in the Macan Experience. While anticipating the first ride and pulling up to the dealership, I found myself thinking about this match made in heaven. It made me contemplate why we choose the cars we do. As consumers, we buy not only products that we need, but those we see as consistent with our self-concept. We want our products to match who we think we are. I’ve worked hard to build my career, and the choices I make are very deliberate. And leaving a good impression is more important than ever. Can a car help with that? The Porsche Macan did just that and more, appearing aggressively athletic on the track and enviably stylish on the street. Setting aside its beauty, the functional Macan had everything I was looking for, from the expansive dash and ability to view the road ahead to the ease of getting in and out. Being able to get products and presentations out of the vehicle and into the office was easy thanks to intuitive design elements and innovative convenience technology. The sales and service staff are enthusiastic about their brand, their team and the cars they drive. They made sure my experience was pleasant and professional. With the attention to detail and continuous innovations in product and service, it’s no wonder people who drive Porsches love them so much.

Colleen Eversman, PHOTOGRAPHER “There is no substitute.” Porsche’s slogan couldn’t be closer to the truth. There really is no substitute for this beautifully designed, expertly built vehicle. When I arrived at the dealership, I didn’t know what to expect. The experience was beyond impressive. My sales representative was deeply knowledgeable and thorough — no feature went unexplained. My initial thought when I got into the driver’s seat was, Is this a dream? As I got to know the SUV, I started thinking about how it was fitting into my life. I was surprised how it made me feel more distinguished; I felt proud to be driving the Macan. The interior leather is rich and supple, and the ride itself is smooth yet powerful. The heated steering wheel, custom seat settings for the driver and passenger, panoramic sunroof, and Apple CarPlay are some of my favorite features. I spend a lot of time driving to meetings and shoots, running errands, and taking my dog to the park, so having a vehicle that can meet my utility needs while looking and driving great is a win-win. Luxury comes in many forms, but the Macan is in a league of its own. To experience the Porsche Macan for yourself, visit Porsche Minneapolis.

Life at this plantation-style luxury resort seems to move at the pace of sweet molasses. The just-opened Montage Palmetto Bluff offers superb accommodations in an oasis-like setting. The property sits within the 20,000-acre Palmetto Bluff community, a centuries-old maritime forest surrounded by 32 miles of riverfront in South Carolina’s low country. A signature experience upon arrival is the canine ambassador program. Visitors are welcomed by purebred Labrador retriever pups. The pooches — Cooper, May and New — are named after the rivers set amidst the forest.

The property was inspired by an elegant 72-room mansion built by Richard Thornton Wilson Jr. in the early 1900s. A devastating fire destroyed the manor in 1926; ruins are still visible, and some of the original features have been incorporated into the present-day design. The resort offers a total of 200 guest accommodations, including a charming collection of rooms, suites and cottages as well as 35 private Montage Residences. Dining options abound. Named for the state flower, main restaurant Jessamine is known for its creative Southern cuisine. The Canoe Club draws its inspiration from the nearby May River, serving up local seafood. Situated alongside the lagoon, Fore & Aft focuses on casual fare. Buffalo’s, with its infamous biscuit bar, is a fan favorite. Guests can buy gourmet foods, fine wines and unique gifts at the on-property general store, RT’s Market. The good life also happens to be the sporting life at Palmetto Bluff. Visitors can enjoy nature walks along the preserve trails, horseback riding at the state-of-the-art Longfield Stables and skeet shooting at the Shooting Club. A wealth of other amenities includes the Jack Nicklaus–designed May River Golf Club, the Palmetto Bluff Conservancy and Wilson Landing Marina. Spa Montage boasts outdoor relaxation areas with hot tubs, plunge pools, eucalyptus steam rooms and redwood saunas. And there’s even a yacht for river excursions. Grace is a 103-year-old vessel that has been masterfully restored and is perfect for sunset cruises along the coastal waterway. Redefining Southern hospitality, Montage Palmetto Bluff radiates magnetic charm at a peaceful pace.

Tucked away under fine-dining restaurant Element 47 in Aspen, Colorado’s slope-side, five-star resort The Little Nell lies an unforgettable wine cellar where guests can enjoy a one-of-a-kind private tasting. Master sommelier Carlton McCoy holds court over the hideaway, which is reminiscent of a speakeasy. To gain entrance, guests are escorted through the eatery’s kitchen, down two flights of stairs to the parking garage and through an industrial-looking door to the red-lit cellar, appropriately dubbed the Red Light Lounge. Inside, McCoy’s hip-hop playlist fills the air, and the walls are adorned with Sharpie signatures of those fortunate enough to have found themselves here. With Tupac blaring through the speakers and a glass of bubbly in hand, you are guided through the space, which is lined with seemingly infinite shelves of crystal decanters and 21,000 bottles of wine valued at more than $5 million. The whole experience is fascinating yet approachable. Cellar visits are customized and can accommodate up to six guests. For Red Light Lounge reservations, contact Carlton McCoy at 240-620-2146.

If You Go GETTING THERE Dorado Beach is situated 35 minutes from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport and 30 minutes from Isla Grande Airport. WHEN TO GO The best time to visit Puerto Rico is from January to June. Spring weather is pleasant, with average daily highs in the mid-80s. WHAT TO EXPECT An unincorporated U.S. territory, this Caribbean island features pristine beaches, mountains and waterfalls. Carrying a U.S. passport is not necessary, nor is exchanging currency. Cellular service is typically covered on domestic plans.
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY CONDÉ NAST VIA GETTY IMAGES
Dorado Beach recalls an era of glamorous travel, when glitterati and globetrotters jetted down to Puerto Rico for some time in the sun. It all really took hold in the late fifties, when Cuba became a no-go and businessman Laurance S. Rockefeller reclaimed this historic property. One of his first RockResorts, the destination reached “it” status when Vogue published a beachwear fashion shoot photographed on location at the newly minted hot spot. Today, Dorado Beach is once again the place to go. Ritz-Carlton recently completed a $342-million renovation on the property, making it the first Ritz-Carlton Reserve in the Americas. The underlying concept? Uncommon luxury in unusual places, catering to discerning travelers seeking personalized service and unforgettable experiences. Each of the 100 rooms and 14 suites sits right on the beach. Service is personalized, and a round-the-clock embajador (ambassador) is assigned to each guest to cater to every whim. Dorado’s mobile app makes scheduling dinner reservations, entertainment, pool time and the like a snap. Guests can enjoy 1,400 acres of natural beauty with three miles of uninterrupted coastline as originally envisioned by Rockefeller. An 11-mile walking and biking trail winding through the preserve is named for its former owner. Water is a main attraction here, with several pools situated throughout the resort (including family and adult-only options). Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ambassadors of the Environment program offers such watersports as kayaking and snorkeling. Other activities include hiking, tennis, hitting the links on one of three professional-caliber courses, and indulging at Spa Botánico, a five-acre facility complete with a pineapple garden, lily pond and soaking pools. Helmed by acclaimed chef José Andrés, Mi Casa is one of the island’s most heralded Spanish restaurants. Encanto Beach Club Bar and Grill serves up freshly grilled fare right along the oceanfront. Positivo Sand Bar offers tapas and sushi in a trendy atmosphere. La Cocina Gourmet marketplace features Puerto Rican coffee, housemade gelato and other indulgences. And finally, guests can partake in culinary classes at La Cocina Gourmet Culinary Center. Su Casa is a remarkable five-bedroom home perfect for families or groups. Offering an infinity pool, a private embajador and ocean views galore, the 8,000-square-foot house dates back to the early 1920s, when the property was a grapefruit and coconut plantation owned by Clara Livingston. An expert aviator, she built her own landing strip known as Dorado Airport. Close friend Amelia Earhart is rumored to have stayed at Su Casa just before her disappearance. In an era when a storied past is hard to come by, Ritz-Carlton has succeeded in restoring the splendor of Dorado Beach.

When you arrive at Amanyara, something tells your entire essence, indeed every fiber in your body, that it’s time to relax. And so do you. You’re so distracted by the property’s overwhelming beauty that you don’t really hear the name of the delightful elixir you’re handed, but you know it’s exquisite and exactly what you need after a day of travel to the West Indies isle. You’re still reveling in the wonder of it all when you are whisked away to your pavilion that’s placed in such perfect seclusion that you almost think you have this Turks and Caicos paradise all to yourself. As you settle into the simplistically chic space that is so trademark of the Aman brand, you finally realize what your fellow globetrotters mean when they say they could abandon life as they know it and set down roots somewhere. And that’s
not by happenstance. Meaning “peaceful place,” Amanyara is designed to feel like home — albeit a sophisticated, super-luxe version of home. You’re taking in the sweeping ocean views through the floor-to-ceiling windows when suddenly the urge hits you: It’s time to go explore. And so you grab a cruiser bike that’s so conveniently placed right outside your door and make your way back to the public spaces. You realize you’ve stumbled upon afternoon tea, so you decide to stay awhile, sipping and snacking as you marvel at the bar’s incredible teak structure. Before long, you find yourself lounging in one of the poolside cabanas, dipping your toes in the tepid water and savoring a refreshing Basil Dazzle. And then it’s time to dine, time to sup on something so wonderful you didn’t even realize had been missing from your life all this time.

When you wake the next morning, you remind yourself that there’s no need to do anything here except be. After a leisurely breakfast, you partake in some pond-side yoga, telling yourself that you’d surely commit to a daily practice if it were always this peaceful. Next, you treat yourself to a massage, and when your masseuse gently wakes you post-treatment, you have no clue how long you’ve been asleep. You decide to stay in this dream-like state well into the afternoon, settling into an oceanfront chaise and admiring the white-sand beaches and turquoise water — because yes, this is Turks and Caicos, but really it’s so much more. It’s in this moment that you fully understand why Aman junkies exist. And then, before you know it, it’s somehow already time to depart. At first, you’re filled with despair. Turns out you can’t stay forever. You can, however, take a part of this peacefulness with you when you go. And that, you realize, is Amanyara’s greatest gift.
If You Go WHAT TO KNOW Just on the heels of its 10th anniversary, the five-star Amanyara is perched on a promontory along the western shore of Providenciales, the most populated of the Turks and Caicos islands. It sits within an 18,000-acre nature preserve. WHAT TO BOOK Thirty-eight standalone pavilions offer tranquil pond views, private infinity pools or prime oceanfront real estate. The ultimate stay, 20 villas feature private acreage, large living spaces and three to six bedrooms set around an infinity pool; they are serviced by personal cooks and housekeepers. WHAT TO EXPECT Amanyara is anything you want it to be, offering a fully customized experience. Guests can enjoy watersports, naturalist activities, exploration safaris, fitness and wellness offerings, and everything in between.

BILL HARROP’S ORIGINAL BALLOON SAFARIS
This South African institution is located just outside Joburg. After a short drive, you’ll arrive for your balloon safari before sunrise, greeted by Bill Harrop himself, with a pitcher of hot chocolate and a pot of fresh coffee. The thrill of the one-hour journey as you ascend a kilometer off the ground is indescribable, and your time high above the Magaliesberg range, taking in the majestic valleys and wildlife, will not be forgotten. Upon landing, bubbly is poured to celebrate the experience. From there, you are served a delectable breakfast at the Clubhouse Pavilion and Restaurant. Harrop will likely win you over with his Northumbrian porridge, best served with a pinch of salt, a sprinkle of sugar, a dollop of cream and a dribble of whiskey.

TRUMPS GRILLHOUSE & BUTCHERY
Nelson Mandela Square is a fashionable area home to shops, cafés, luxury hotels and fine-dining restaurants. For a great lunch spot, head to Trumps Grillhouse & Butchery. Start with the delicious beef carpaccio and a bottle of Pinotage. Trumps is known for its meat, so you can’t go wrong with a sirloin and a side of chips. For a lighter meal, order the kingklip, seasoned with spices and grilled in lemon butter. And save room for dessert; the cheese board, with its variety of local fromage and housemade jam, is not to be missed.

ROBBEN ISLAND
Once a leper colony, a mental hospital and a training base, Robben Island is best known as the prison that housed anti-apartheid activists, including Nelson Mandela, who spent 18 years incarcerated here. Today, this World Heritage Site offers daily tours that celebrate both its tragedy and triumph. Lead by former political prisoners, the tour winds around the island by bus and foot, with stops at the leprosy graveyard, lime quarry, army and navy bunkers, and maximum-security prison. As you peer into the cells, it becomes clear why UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee marked this location for its triumph of the human spirit.

Begin with the Atlantic Ocean, mix in a James Beard Award–winning chef and a world-class sommelier, pour the contents into a sleek power yacht with 310 lucky passengers, and you’ve got the recipe for the first-ever James Beard Foundation cruise. Presented by Windstar, this eight-day foodie extravaganza started in Lisbon, Portugal, and made its way to Barcelona, Spain, with stopovers in Morocco and five Spanish cities, including Málaga, Almería, Cartagena, Ibiza and Tarragona. For the maiden voyage, three-time James Beard Award winner Michel Nischan acted as culinary ambassador, hosting cooking demos, leading market tours and creating gastronomic experiences from the foodstuffs procured at each port of call. Sommelier Steve Olson served as drinking guide, hosting cocktail demos and fine-wine tastings as well as leading a tour of the landscape of Spanish wine. With the help of the Wind Surf culinary crew, these two talents turned out a steady stream of five-star experiences — think Spanish tapas, luscious jamón, Moroccan tagines, outstanding Tempranillos and rich Riojas.

Guests are free to do whatever they please at each port and can create custom explorations. Optional onboard activities abound, and entertainment is refreshingly devoid of Vegas-style revues. This cruise is a foodie’s paradise. Leave it to Windstar to combine culinary excellence and unusual native experiences to create an uncommon adventure.

THE SPORTING LIFE Tory Burch brings her activewear line to the Flatiron District. BY W E N DY L U B OV I C H
Tory Burch, the chic designer known for her classy-preppy creations, is turning her sights to the sporting world with Tory Sport, a line of casual clothing that goes from the tennis court to the coffee shop. Sassy striped sweaters recall the athletic wear of the seventies but with a modern ease. Brightly trimmed, color-blocked jackets, half-zip anoraks and handsome track pants make dressing down foolproof. The esteemed fashion house sees this sporting style not as a trend but as a significant shift in the way women dress. These are “coming and going” clothes that last from morning yoga to afternoon errands, activewear for women of all ages with a touch of crisp glamour. A spacious new store in the Flatiron District is devoted exclusively to the Tory Sport line. “We thought about the casual vibe of a seventies surf lodge and reimagined it with Scandinavian design principles,” explains CEO and designer Tory Burch. “With clean, simple lines and a completely flexible interior, the store balances functionality with style.” Inside, the focus is on clothing and accessories fit for golfing, running, skiing and swimming. Fabricated in modern performance textiles, the designs have both sporting function and retro flair. Tory Sport, 129 Fifth Ave., New York, 212-777-2226, torysport.com

Wildly successful Italian food emporium and dining destination Eataly is serving up a second helping in the Westfield World Trade Center complex in Lower Manhattan. “Each Eataly location is dedicated to a value,” explains CEO Nicola Farinetti. “At Eataly Downtown, we’ve chosen bread as our theme.” Baked in specially designed ovens, unique breads from around the world will be featured each month. Osteria della Pace is the marquee restaurant, with chef Riccardo Orfino at the helm. He serves up fresh takes on childhood favorites, like spaghetti ai tre pomodori, a sauce marrying two kinds of Italian tomatoes with an American variety. Shoppers can immerse themselves in the curated Italian marketplace offering thousands of imported products, from olive oil and aged balsamic vinegar to fresh truffles and dried pasta. If you fancy a tasting, there’s a mozzarella bar, fresh pasta bar and juice bar. For something sweet, nosh on freshly baked, bite-size pasticcini, the perfect accompaniment to espresso. Transforming a stodgy office building into a hip haunt, SLS Hotels has opened its first Manhattan outpost amidst great anticipation. The buzz surrounds French design guru Philippe Starck, who put his quirky yet cool imprint on the 14-story structure, his first New York hotel in more than a decade. SLS and Starck are a proven duo, having collaborated on properties in Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Miami. Each showcases the designer’s witty take on juxtaposition: grand baroque mixed with quiet minimalism, high-gloss disco next to organic wood grain. And there’s always a surprise tucked in somewhere. The Bazaar is the first New York restaurant from James Beard Award–winning chef José Andrés. Known for exotic cocktails that bubble into a smoky haze and art-inspired tapas, the Spanish chef brings a certain panache to the hotel dining scene. SLS stands for style, luxury and service, and it’s geared toward a jet-set crowd. From trendy NoMad, it’s just a quick stroll to Madison Square Park or the shopping along Fifth Avenue. Then come evening, return to your own Starck-designed retreat with a Park Avenue address — the ultimate stylish stay. SLS Park Avenue, 444 Park Ave. S., New York, slshotels.com/parkavenue

Now, after a yearlong renovation, the Beverly Hills location just reopened in an expanded space as the company’s posh new flagship. Many of the 200 rare varieties discovered during Barenholtz’s travels are available in the United States only through American Tea Room. FARE FACTORY A downtown trattoria dishes up authentic Italian. BY AMBER GIBSON
The Factory Kitchen opened in 2013 with a nondescript name in a similarly nondescript location. But home-style Italian meals by chef Angelo Auriana, a native of Bergamo, Lombardy, keep locals coming back for more. The downtown trattoria embraces the casual concrete left over from its former life as a fish factory, and the reclaimed-wood tables anchor the spacious, casual dining room. Garage-door windows open up to let in the light and breeze, making for a convivial indoor-outdoor environment. The mandilli di seta, supple handkerchief pasta reminiscent of lasagna sheets, is a must-have. It’s topped simply with a Ligurian almond-basil pesto so bright and herbaceous that diners often ask if they can buy a jar to take home. The wine list is predominantly Italian, highlighting reds and whites from around the peninsula. Instead of traditional tiramisu for dessert, light ladyfingers are swapped for denser buckwheat cake, softened with a soak in espresso. It’s the ideal foundation for a mound of fluffy mascarpone mousse and a sprinkling of toffee crunch — a sweet ending to an Italian feast. SEASIDE SANCTUARY Mediterranean glam meets SoCal mellowness at Casa del Mar. BY AMBER GIBSON
Aquamarine ceramic tiles from Spain and hand-carved wooden tables from Italy set the scene at Casa del Mar’s Terrazza Lounge. And the sunset views and briny ocean breeze from the two-story, floor-to-ceiling windows never get old. This luxury beachfront property maintains its regal 1920s history yet feels modern with such design updates as an eight-foot chandelier with hand-blown glass beading, striped cabanas, and stenciled, ceramic ceiling tiles. Santa Monica’s grandest beach club balances serenity and luxury with white Italian Calacatta marble bathrooms, light blue walls and coral sculptures in its 129 guest rooms and 17 suites. Inner peace and radiance abound at the intimate Sea Wellness Spa; opt for a gentle HydraFacial after yoga on the beach. The cuisine at both Terrazza Lounge and seafood-focused Catch showcase Southern California’s bounty. And great shopping and the Santa Monica Farmers Market are just blocks away. The décor here is unapologetically pretty but not too fussy. The crowd is naturally beautiful, more flowing skirts and wedge sandals than contoured makeup and stilettos. And the personalized service — they’ll even remember your favorite tea — makes it hard to check out. Casa del Mar, 1910 Ocean Way, Santa Monica, 310-581-5533, hotelcasadelmar.com

PLAYING WITH FIRE Smoky South American barbecue storms the West Loop. BY AMBER GIBSON
Before sitting down at El Che Bar, chef John Manion’s ode to Argentine barbecue in the West Loop, admire the dancing fire and the sizzling steaks in the open-hearth kitchen. There’s no better way to rev up your appetite. A chef’s table for 10 offers the best view of the action. That is, unless you’re feeling especially adventurous. In that case, opt for the chef’s counter, where you can feel the radiating heat and nibble on new dishes. On a date, the sexy distressed-leather banquette is a more intimate choice. Everything on the menu is cooked by fire. Housemade morcilla is an asado mainstay, grilled to order with sweet-corn vinaigrette and succotash. Fatty lamb ribs literally fall off the bone, while head-on prawns are so succulent you’ll eat the shell. And the char on these steaks puts Windy City steakhouses to shame. You’ll be too full for dessert, but do indulge in the housemade ice creams and the flaming chocolate cake. Every dish here has plenty of substance to back up the pyrotechnic showmanship. NORDIC NOSH Upton 43 ushers in a new era of Swedish chicness. B Y K AT E N E L S O N
Scandinavian food is not inherently sexy. And yet chef Erick Harcey elevates gravlax, Swedish meatballs and the like to new heights, beyond the flash-in-the-pan fads of bacon foam and compressed watermelon cubes. This is real food prepared and presented really well. And that’s what makes Upton 43 such a fan favorite through and through. A fixture of the Twin Cities foodie scene, Harcey made a name for himself with his North Minneapolis gastropub, Victory 44. But the acclaim and accolades keep pouring in for his latest creation, an ambitious eatery housed in a former hardware store in Minneapolis’s Linden Hills neighborhood. Upton 43 is an ode to Harcey’s grandparents, and the unassuming authenticity of that tribute shines through in every meal. Scandinavian-chic design prevails throughout the light-filled, spartan space, letting the food take center stage. Family recipes, like those Swedish meatballs paired with potato purée and gravy, mingle on the menu with innovative dishes, such as the chicken liver served with pickled blueberry and granola crisp. For dessert, the elderflower ice is a can’t-miss. The real treat is the chef’s table, an intimate multi-course dining experience that puts 14 lucky diners right in the Upton 43 kitchen. Harcey and his team often host guest chefs (think Piccolo’s Doug Flicker and Corner Table’s Thomas Boemer and Nick Rancone) in the experimental space where they can “push boundaries in food, flavors and techniques.” It’s here where new friendships are forged over plates of inventive cuisine and clinks of wine glasses — a most Swedish tradition. Don’t scoff. The Turkish rugs and kilims you’ll find in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, are more authentic than anything you’ll buy as a tourist in Istanbul. Rug & Relic owners Steve and Tove Bormes personally know all their Turkish weavers and artisans, and can guarantee the quality of their craft. “Rugs and kilims hold a special place in my heart,” notes Tove.“They represent the hard work and passion of multiple people.” In a past life, Steve and Tove were an arborist and a law professor respectively. Today, Turkey is the couple’s second home. They’ve spent two of the past 12 years there, in three-week stretches. “I like to think Steve and I know just enough Turkish to make the sharks nervous,” Tove says with a wink. Traveling to remote villages to find the best weavers, the duo has discovered many more treasures, including copper, porcelain, pottery and scarves. “The farther out of Istanbul we got, the more amazing and beautiful things we found,” explains Tove. “Most pieces we bring home are vintage or antique, but we also create our own designs, which are then fabricated by friends there.” Rug & Relic, 410 E. A STITCH IN TIME Iowa is home to the last standing Frank Lloyd Wright–created hotel. B Y K AT E N E L S O N
Historic Park Inn, the last remaining hotel designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, sits in quaint downtown Mason City, Iowa. Originally erected in 1910, the edifice fell into disrepair during the 1920s farm crisis and became a boarding house. It was eventually abandoned and in such sorry shape that demolition seemed its likeliest fate. But in the early 2000s, a group of preservation-minded locals banded together to save the historic building. They formed the nonprofit Wright on the Park and oversaw an extensive renovation restoring the property to its former glory. Wright’s own drawings served as a guide for the $18.5-million project that concluded in 2011, when the revitalized hotel reopened. Today, Historic Park Inn has taken its rightful place on the National Register of Historic Places and has become an international point of interest. Inside and out, the structure is pure Wright, with unique touches like cubical lanterns and art glass. Period pieces have been thoughtfully reproduced, including Robie House lights, barrel chairs designed by the architect himself, and bronze Mercury statues created by Richard W. Bock, a longtime Wright associate. No two of the 27 guest rooms are alike, with the pièce de résistance being the originally restored two-room Historic Suite. The 1910 Grillé combines Prairie Style décor and fine dining. The second-floor ladies’ parlor, with its balcony overlooking Central Park, is in full and working order. The gentlemen’s parlor, a lower-level hideaway where men were free to drink and smoke, has been transformed into a bar, billiard room and wine room. Frank Lloyd Wright die-hards can get their fix with a docent-led tour of the property. Historic Park Inn, 15 West State St., Mason City, Iowa, 641-422-0015, stoneycreekhotels.com

STATE OF THE ART Some of the best things in life are free. BY FRANK ROFFERS
A non-collecting institution, the Aspen Art Museum prides itself on exhibiting the most significant evolutions in international contemporary art. The structure itself, with its bold, lattice-like faรงade, was designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, recipient of the 2014 Pritzker Prize. The museum is a manageable 33,000 square feet, with four levels and eight exhibition spaces, including six gallery spaces, a rooftop sculpture garden and an outdoor commons. It features first-time solo exhibitions by emerging contemporary artists from around the globe as well as works from established artists that focus on new, unrecognized or under-appreciated subject matter with cultural, social or political significance. Admission is free thanks to generous support from art aficionados and philanthropists Amy and John Phelan. Aspen Art Museum, 637 E. Hyman Ave., Aspen, Colorado, 970-925-8050, aspenartmuseum.org

AN INTROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS OF POWER IN THE NORTH.
Power is a precarious thing these days, particularly in the North, where benevolent kings reign supreme. And compared to its East and West Coast counterparts, power here on the North Coast truly is a horse of different color. It’s self-effacing bordering on self-conscious, polite if not downright prudish. In fact, it’s hard to put your finger on it because, by and large, it simply doesn’t want to be acknowledged. But we’d have it no other way. Around these parts, we’re enamored with the modest mogul, caught up in a romanticized fantasy where power doesn’t corrupt. And perhaps that’s because we’ve got so many shining examples of when it doesn’t. In the pages that follow, we present some of the most influential people to come out of — and come to — our region. They dominate in fields from the arts to sports to brand building, leaving their unique signature on our world. And for many of them, the values they learned here have helped shape their success (even that damned Midwest humility). But alas, there are always a few bad apples, aren’t there? As much as we love a hero around here, we can’t get enough of our villains. They’re the train wreck you can’t stop watching, the click bait you can’t seem to resist. That’s why we’ve outlined in gory detail the North’s most painful falls from grace, a guilty pleasure that’s yours for the reading. Because while we like to think of ourselves as good neighbors, we tend to be fair-weather friends when it comes to our most powerful.

THE NORTH HAS PRODUCED — AND ATTRACTED — SOME IMPRESSIVE INFLUENCERS. BY ANNE RODERIQUE-JONES
PAM BORTON
PRESIDENT AND CEO OF BORTON PARTNERS
Most Minnesotans know Pam Borton as the University of Minnesota women’s basketball coach. Indeed, she spent 12 years with the Golden Gophers and became the winningest coach in the team’s history. Today, she’s still coaching, just not for a college team. As president and CEO of Borton Partners, she acts as a senior executive coach, taking already successful people to the next level. “I did this as an athletic coach for 27 years, and I’m still coaching people,” she says. Although she recently moved to Pennsylvania, Borton still considers the Twin Cities home and returns here twice a month. “Minneapolis is a vibrant community where I take responsibility and enjoy being a community leader,” she explains. “I continue to give back and develop leaders in this community because it’s a place that has given me so much.” This includes heading up TeamWomenMN, whose mission is to inspire, encourage and support women in reaching their full potential. Borton cofounded the nonprofit to impact the lives of women and make a difference in their development as people and as professionals. “The most important thing I did was surround myself with very talented women who have given so much of their time, leadership and energy to this organization,” she notes. “I would never have been able to do this without my board members, all the members and our community partners.” But being a leader isn’t always easy, as Borton knows from experience. “The challenges I faced in my career were mostly when I faced adversity and was under fire publicly,” she says. “I learned very quickly to develop thick skin, surround myself with the right people, always do the right thing and believe in myself. And I would remind myself why I was doing what I was doing: It was always about impacting lives, making a difference and developing people to reach their full potential.” This has surely helped prepare her for her role today. “With my female clients — I also see this in men, but they just hide it better — a lack of self-confidence seems to get in their way and hold them back from being great,” she notes. And if anyone would know about achieving greatness, it’s Pam Borton.

CHRIS LINDNER PRESIDENT OF FOOTJOY If you’ve ever sported a pair of Keds, it’s Chris Lindner you have to thank for looking so cool. He was the genius behind the marketing campaigns featuring brand ambassador Taylor Swift, giving the century-old company a fresh face. The president of FootJoy certainly seems to have a knack for building lifestyle brands (think Converse, Nike, Saucony, Sperry and the aforementioned Keds). But before he was a Massachusetts marketing guru, he was a Minneapolis kid who grew up a few blocks from Lake Harriet. “We used the lake year-round,” he notes. “Whether sailing, canoeing, running, swimming or ice skating, there was always plenty to do every season. We were always outside.” This love of sports jump-started Lindner’s long-standing career in iconic performance branding. “Growing up in Minnesota just might be a real advantage for all of us,” he muses. “We’re taught these amazing Midwestern values to be hard-working, honest, enduring, open-minded, grateful and respectful. How can you not when it’s 20 below zero late into the winter months?” He adds that his North roots instilled four core values he thinks about every day as a business leader: authenticity, compassion, creativity and humility. It’s likely he gleaned some of these traits from his parents. Lindner’s mom owned a boutique, and his father ran a successful dental practice. “When I think back, they really encouraged us to get involved and try different things,” he says. “I always had a job: mowing lawns, shoveling snow, delivering papers, working the retail floor of a sporting-goods store, even being an usher at the Edina movie theater. My parents encouraged us to experience working.” He also attributes his success to the Twin Cities’ dynamic creative community — and a few key individuals. He says marketing guru Matt Majka is the best boss he’s ever had. As for branding expert John Marinovich, Lindner explains: “He hired me at an agency when I frankly didn’t have any experience for the role. He literally took time out of his busy day to teach me the business. It was like a crash course in advertising and consumer marketing. He inspired a real passion and provided a springboard into the business. I still carry those lessons with me today.”

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY NIKE
Greg Hoffman started his career at Nike 24 years ago as an intern in the design department. He recalls driving 27 hours from Minneapolis to Portland, Oregon, in his parent’s loaner van then sleeping in it for a week to get the gig. That journey ultimately led him to become the company’s chief marketing officer. Hoffman grew up in Tonka Bay, where he worked at Meadowbrook Press book publisher during his high-school days. “This taught me at an early age that you could make a living at something you were really passionate about,” he says. “In marketing, if you are passionate about what you are creating, it will show up in the solution and the consumer will feel that passion.” He went on to attend the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, where he “really learned the importance of mastering your craft, never being satisfied with mediocrity, and having high standards.” And like most highly accomplished people, he attributes his success to his mentors, “the coaches, professors and managers who know the difference between good and great, and did the right things to put me in a position to achieve it,” as he puts it. For Hoffman, inspiration comes from four main areas: design, nature, sports and travel. “I have had the good fortune to see a lot of live sporting events around the world, such as the Olympics and the World Cup,” he says. “I draw inspiration from these moments, from witnessing the highest level of athleticism and competition. Those are the stages where we put our products to the ultimate test.” He’s also inspired by North notables with a “dream-big” mentality. As Hoffman explains, “We have a saying at Nike: ‘Lead from the front.’ This is embodied by individuals who really defy the status quo and set the trends for others to follow. I mean, Rod Carew stole home seven times in one season. And Prince was one of the greatest innovators in any field.” He considers himself fortunate to live in Portland, with its many natural wonders. “It always seems that Oregon and Minnesota are up for the award for best place to bike,” notes Hoffman. “I think it’s a tie.” Which is partly why he and his family visit his parents in Chanhassen every autumn, which he considers the state’s best season. “Each trip, we try to include a walk around Lotus Lake, a trip to the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, and a Twins or Vikings game if possible,” he explains. “I will always have a strong connection to the Land of 10,000 Lakes.”

OLGA VISO
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY WALKER ART CENTER
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AT THE WALKER ART CENTER If you don’t know her by name — and, let’s face it, you probably do — you’ve likely graced the halls of her museum. Olga Viso is the executive director of the Walker Art Center, one of the most distinguished multidisciplinary art centers in the world. She’s got an impressive résumé, having served on the board of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and as a trustee at the American Association of Museum Directors. And in 2013, she was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve on the National Council on the Arts. Viso in 2008 came to Minneapolis, where she received a warm welcome. Today, she oversees the artistic program and operations of the entire Walker, working closely with its board of trustees to ensure that the museum is well-supported and well-funded. “While I may periodically curate an exhibition, my job is to ensure that the Walker’s talented team of curators and programmers has the resources it needs to bring the most exciting, adventurous new art and artists to audiences in the Twin Cities,” says Viso. And her accomplishments at the Walker are many. “I am immensely proud of the campus transformation that is currently underway,” she explains. “It is not only renovating the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden for the next generation of visitors but also expanding its footprint by five acres on the hillside surrounding the Walker.” Some 20 new sculptures and outdoor commissions will be brought to the campus, joining the 40-plus works returning to the space in new locations. The objets d’art will be unveiled in June 2017, when the upper and lower gardens reopen. Viso notes, “I am also proud that the new sculptures represent the voices of artists coming from seven different countries in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America, as well as important artists from Minnesota, including Frank Big Bear and Aaron Spangler.” Viso has worked on a number of collaborative projects with her colleagues at other Twin Cities cultural institutions, most notably serving on the steering committee for the West Downtown Cultural District, which is breathing new life into the Hennepin Avenue cultural corridor, as well as playing an instrumental role in the Guerrilla Girls Twin Cities Takeover, in which nearly 30 arts and educational organizations collaborated to bring the feminist pioneers to town for a city-wide festival. Adds Viso, “A few years ago, I also launched a monthly consortium of the directors of the 10 large cultural organizations in the Twin Cities committed to advancing diversity and inclusion initiatives.” When she’s not at the museum or attending to one of her many extracurricular projects, she and her husband, who live in Northeast Minneapolis, often host visiting artists in their guesthouse. Now who’s welcoming whom?

William McGuire’s career was fast-tracked when the health company where he served as chief operating officer and president was acquired by Minnesota-based UnitedHealth Group in 1988. A year later, he was named president, and within a couple of years, he was anointed CEO and chairman of the board. With McGuire at the helm, the company grew rapidly, and in 2006, UnitedHealth enjoyed $70 billion in annual revenue. That success made McGuire’s fall from grace that year all the greater when the Securities and Exchange Commission made him the poster boy for a crackdown on corporate chieftains who for years had received backdated stock options from their companies. The maneuver involved carefully timing the awarding of stock options to executives when the share price was near a low so that the value would be greater when they sold the stock later at, presumably, a higher price. The Wall Street Journal wrote extensively about McGuire, perhaps as much for his backstory as the size of his backdated options. A pulmonologist by training, he was also a philanthropist, a student of butterflies, and an avid collector of wine, art and furniture. The SEC discovered that numerous other CEOs, including Apple’s Steve Jobs, had received backdated options, and at least five execs were given jail time. In 2007, McGuire agreed to a settlement that required he pay out $468 million in fines and restitution. And he was barred from serving as an officer or director of a public company for 10 years. But his philanthropy continued — in 2009, he and his wife donated a butterfly collection valued at $41 million to the University of Florida — and he maintained his civic presence. In 2012, he bought the Minnesota Stars soccer team and steered through a political thicket to land the right to build a dramatic, privately financed stadium for the team (now called the Minnesota United FC) on the site of a former bus barn at the intersection of I-94 and Snelling Avenue in St. Paul.

Amy Koch may have set a record in the state Senate, but being the shortest tenured majority leader in the history of Minnesota is a dubious honor. In January 2006, Republican Koch won the seat for the 19th District, embracing portions of Hennepin and Wright counties. Almost seven years to the day and a year after she rose to majority leader, she resigned that post because, as the press quoted her the day she made her announcement, “Sometimes, I think, it’s just time.” But it was only a matter of time before the whole story came out: The married senator was engaged in an affair with her communications chief, Michael Brodkorb, who was also married. After word had gotten around the Senate, the duo was confronted in September 2011 by Minnesota Senate Republican Caucus Chief of Staff Cullen Sheehan. Koch confirmed they were romantically involved, explaining that her husband knew of the affair and that she wanted to handle the situation quietly. The clandestine couple thought their secret was safe, but Sheehan told Deputy Majority Leader Geoff Michel. Concerned, he later that year orchestrated a political intervention, bringing Koch to a secret, three-hour meeting at the Minneapolis Club with some of her political allies. As Koch later revealed, Republican Senator David Hann told her, “You are going to resign tonight.” He explained that Brodkorb would be fired the next day. Koch resigned her leadership position and did not seek reelection. Brodkorb filed a wrongful termination lawsuit, asking for $500,000 in damages. He ultimately settled for $30,000.
JOHN STUMPF
Until last summer, things seemed to be going swimmingly for Pierz native John Stumpf. The son of a farmer and one of 11 children, he in 2007 became the well-respected CEO of one of America’s four mega banks, Wells Fargo. Stumpf steered the financial institution through the nation’s financial crisis while earning tens of millions of dollars in salary and stock grants. He masterminded a major deal in 2008, when Wells Fargo acquired Wachovia for $12.2 billion in stock, a move that gave the bank a national footprint. But that shiny career came to a crashing end last September when the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau announced it would fine Wells Fargo $100 million for creating two million “ghost” accounts without the consent of the customers whose names were put on those checking and credit-card accounts. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency piled on a $50-million penalty, and the city and the county of Los Angeles tacked on another $35-million fine. Members of the finance committees in both the House and the Senate erupted with anger and demanded Stumpf’s head during testy hearings (Senator Sherrod Brown accused the bank of “stonewalling”) after learning the scam had gone on for five years. Some 2,300 employees lost their jobs, and Stumpf resigned in October 2016. Both he and Wells Fargo’s head of retail banking forfeited $60 million in stock. Stumpf’s wallet could grow even lighter as an internal investigation may result in more clawbacks of bonuses given to executives.

Perhaps Trevor Cook should have stuck with his part-time gig as a sports bookie. He might not currently be serving more than two decades in prison. Cook was Minnesota’s own mini Bernie Madoff, the mastermind of a Ponzi scheme that purported to make money for investors (the phony statements they received said so, after all) while mostly enriching himself and several confederates. For four years beginning in 2005, he and his colleagues sweet talked $194 million out of the bank accounts of some 1,000 investors who believed he operated Plymouth-based currency trading firm Universal Brokerage Services. But the FBI, the SEC and other law-enforcement entities claim only about $109 million of that money was ever sent to currency-trading firms. About $52 million was repaid to investors in what the government called “lulling payments.” And another $30 million was pocketed by Cook and his coconspirators to fund their lavish lifestyles. A graduate of Christian prep school Minnehaha Academy and a former caddy at the Minikahda Club, Cook quickly became known as a major partier during his time at the University of Minnesota, spending freely on booze and strippers (one of whom he hired as his administrative and sexual assistant). He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in applied economics, got a job as an investment banker and by 2007 opened his own money-management firm after buying the 117-year-old Van Dusen Mansion for $2.6 million in cash. In 2009, the SEC and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission filed lawsuits accusing Cook of running a Ponzi scheme, using the money of later investors to pay off earlier ones. Prosecutors seized $13 million spent on land in Panama, and Cook turned over Fabergé eggs, bejeweled purses, a watch collection and $363,700 in $100 bills. On top of that, he admitted to cheating the Internal Revenue Service out of $2 million in taxes. In 2010, Cook pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud and one count of tax evasion. He was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison.

“It pains me deeply that my good name and reputation have been put into question by allegations that are entirely false and based wholly on rumor, hearsay or innuendo,” said former Archbishop John Nienstedt a month after he resigned as head of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis last June. It was an ignoble end to his eight-year tenure as archbishop, with rumors swirling about scores of reports of priest abuse as well as bankruptcy and civil and criminal charges. An internal probe by the archdiocese — authorized by Nienstedt in 2014 — wound up naming him as part of the problem, though he has never been charged with a crime. Investigators collected affidavits from priests and former seminarians who implicated Nienstedt in a variety of situations, including his presence in a gay nightclub in Detroit, an attempt to buy “poppers” used as a sexual stimulant, and inappropriate touching and sexual suggestions involving at least two seminarians and one teenage boy. He denies the accusations and insists his accusers were prompted by his objections to same-sex marriage and “difficult decisions I made as their superior.” Further dooming Nienstedt career’s was a raft of allegations that he turned a blind eye to reports of other sexual misbehavior involving priests under his jurisdiction. At last check, he was living in Northern California, where he consults with the Napa Institute, helping write and edit religious documents. He remains a priest.

FALLEN SPORTS FIGURES CLEM HASKINS In 1986, former NBA player Clem Haskins was hired by the University of Minnesota to rebuild a men’s basketball team tarnished by scandal. But within 13 years, he had created his own. The day before the 1999 NCAA tournament, the Pioneer Press reported allegations that a tutor at the school’s academic-counseling office had secretly written more than 400 pieces of coursework for several players. It was later revealed she’d received $3,000 from Haskins himself. The team was put on probation and stripped of wins, including its 1997 Big Ten conference title. Haskins was forced to resign and was banned from coaching until 2007. Now retired, he lives on a 750-acre ranch in Kentucky.

Perhaps one of the fastest and most unusual falls from grace — and subsequent rehabilitations — involved Eden Prairie dentist Walter Palmer, who went on a reported $54,000 hunting trip to Zimbabwe in the summer of 2015. Under the tutelage of a local guide, he unwittingly shot and killed a beloved lion named Cecil who lived in Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park. The news went viral, and Palmer was labeled a pariah and worse. Angry protestors outside his Bloomington clinic kept him away from his practice for weeks. Palmer’s profile attached to a trophy-hunting organization called Safari Club International credits him with 43 kills, including deer, caribou, moose, buffalo, a polar bear and a mountain lion. His only hunting-related brush with the law was a 2008 conviction of poaching a black bear in Wisconsin that was killed 40 miles outside a legal hunting zone. He was fined nearly $3,000 and placed on a year’s probation. But nothing could have prepared Palmer for the worldwide condemnation he received following the shooting of Cecil. Social-media posts around the world blasted him. The door of his vacation home on Marco Island, Florida, was spray painted “LION KILLER!” Pickled pigs’ feet were left on his driveway. Palmer eventually returned to his practice. The Zimbabwe government said his papers were in order and no charges would be brought against him. His guide, on the other hand, did face trial, but the charges were dropped. Even a year after the incident, London’s Daily Mail published photos of Palmer and his Porsche Cayenne Turbo as he headed into the W hotel in downtown Minneapolis. The headline read: “EXCLUSIVE: Not a care in the world for the millionaire dentist who slaughtered Cecil the Lion with his bow and arrow exactly a year ago as he drives his new $120,000 Porsche to a cocktail bar.”
University of Minnesota wrestling coach J Robinson was fired last September after 30 years with the school following an investigation that revealed he failed to take corrective actions when he became aware that wrestlers were selling and abusing Xanax. He provided his supervisors with a list of student athletes he believed were involved, but athletic director Mark Coyle said he was not helpful or forthcoming with additional knowledge. He was fired “for cause,” which made him ineligible for a $500,000 severance check. In a letter to Coyle, Robinson disagreed with the findings, attacking the university’s lack of support for coaches addressing student-athlete drug issues. He has since moved his popular wrestling camp to the University of Wisconsin–River Falls.
FRED SMOOT Minnesota Vikings first-year safety Fred Smoot was a key member and alleged organizer of 2005’s infamous “Love Boat” scandal that took place on Lake Minnetonka. After crew members witnessed inappropriate sexual activities on the boat, the three-and-a-half-hour cruise was cut short. Formal charges were filed, and Smoot was ordered to pay a fine and perform community service. Years later, he asserted the incident was like going to any other club in the city and stated, “You know, cities like New York, D.C., Miami, Atlanta — this type of stuff happens every day.”
N O RWO O D T E AG U E University of Minnesota athletic director Norwood Teague resigned in August 2015 after it was revealed he had sexually harassed two employees during a night of drinking at a university-sponsored event. He inappropriately touched both women and sent text messages to one. As his alcohol consumption increased, his behavior grew worse; he eventually pinched one of the women’s buttocks and asked if he could perform oral sex on her. The behavior was reported the next day, and University President Eric Kaler requested Teague seek an alcohol-abuse assessment. He took full responsibility for his actions, noting he was taking steps to address his alcohol issues. Teague received no severance package and was barred from campus.

Until 2008, Twin Cities mogul Tom Petters enjoyed the fruits of operating the third largest fraudulent hedge fund in the country’s history. Court documents put his 2007 worth at $1 billion. He owned luxury cars, yachts and three mansions in three states (including one in Wayzata worth $5.3 million). His esteemed Petters Group Worldwide had thousands of employees and owned 100-plus businesses, including Fingerhut, Polaroid and Sun Country Airlines. Petters was hailed a business genius, a symbol to all that a middle child of seven growing up in St. Cloud could reach the brass ring. He even propounded a long list of inspirational quotes, including “If a window of opportunity occurs, don’t pull down the shade.” But the shade came down abruptly following the defection of insider Deanna Coleman, Petter’s vice president of operations (and, briefly, his lover). A couple other execs agreed to cooperate with an investigation that involved Coleman wearing a wire while Petters talked of felonious activities. It soon came to light that, in true Ponzi fashion, as more lenders gave him money, he’d pay off earlier loans or roll them into new ones while carving out millions for himself and his coconspirators, including Coleman. Indicted in December 2008, Petters was ultimately found guilty of orchestrating a $3.65-billion Ponzi scheme. The charges included mail and wire fraud as well as conspiracy to commit money laundering. In April 2010, he was sentenced to 50 years in prison, the longest term ever ordered in a financial-fraud case in Minnesota history. Petters maintains his innocence to this day and continues to file petitions — thus far unsuccessfully — for a new trial and new judge. One of his inspirational quotes has the ring of irony: “There is no such thing,” he once wrote, “as a minor lapse of integrity.”
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY SHERBURNE COUNTY JAIL AND J. VESPA/WIREIMAGE FOR FINGERPRINT COMMUNICATIONS
Once upon a time, Denny Hecker was a successful car dealer in the Twin Cities. In the nineties, he collected expensive watches, jetted around the country on a private plane, and owned vacation homes in Colorado, Minnesota and Mexico. But in 2008, things started to go south when authorities received complaints that his dealerships hadn’t been paying tax, title and licensing fees. An investigation soon unearthed larger scams. Beginning three years earlier, he and a couple associates had begun altering documents that defrauded commercial lenders out of tens of millions of dollars. By the end of 2009, the hole Hecker had dug himself was $767 million deep. He filed for bankruptcy, figuring if he could get that “gorilla,” as he put it, off his back, he could still live comfortably on $1 million a year in consulting fees and the sale of some of his businesses. But federal prosecutors had other ideas. In 2010, Hecker was charged with conspiracy to commit wire and bankruptcy fraud, earning the latter charge when he tried to conceal assets by transferring more than $110,000 to a friend who had instructions to hold it for him. Hecker eventually reached a plea deal, and in February 2011, he was ordered to pay $31 million in restitution and to serve 10 years in prison. At his sentencing, U.S. District Court Judge Joan Ericksen said, “The actions you’ve taken are not consistent with someone who can be trusted, and you have not been as truthful as you could have been in the court system. Therefore, you do not get a break. You’re going to get the full 10 years, which is appropriate and necessary. Behaving like a scoundrel is not tolerated in the court system.” For his part, Hecker maintained his innocence, blaming his problems on deals gone bad, an ill-advised bankruptcy and the poor advice of the people on whom he relied. His release date is slated for 2018, when he’ll be 66.

As a child, Judy loved visiting Frank Lloyd Wright homes with her family. Her husband, Bob, recalls receiving a postcard of the designer’s legendary Fallingwater when he was 10. And when the couple decided to build their home overlooking Beaver Creek, near Vail, Colorado, they had their eye on the organic Prairie School aesthetic that made Wright a design icon. The trick was finding an architect capable of not only designing a dwelling that didn’t overwhelm the scenic yet steep lot but who could also create spaces that would accommodate guests while remaining cozy for two people. “We didn’t want an architect who would simply copy Frank Lloyd Wright’s style,” says Bob. “We wanted to find someone who really gets how to use materials and designs that blend seamlessly into the environment in a way that is peaceful and calming.” After poring over home books and magazines, they landed on Twin Cities–based Charles R. Stinson Architecture + Design. At first, the idea of hiring someone from out of state seemed ambitious. But Judy and Bob were eventually won over by Stinson’s passion for detail — and his enthusiasm for working with these two architecture aficionados.

Home B U I L D
Meticulously constructed by Mark Fox of Fox Hunt & Partners, the result is a stunning example of the power of collaboration. Situated on the edge of an aspen forest, the home is protected from the cold northern winds, yet it captures the sun’s warmth with large, southern-facing windows that offer jaw-dropping views of nearby ski areas. In winter, snow sitting atop the roof makes the home look as though it’s snuggled beneath a down comforter. Come summer, the beiges, browns and grays of the stone exterior feel like they’ve been plucked straight from the surrounding landscape. Inside, a lower-level guest area feels like a five-star resort, complete with guest suites, a bunkroom, a movie theater, a massage room, a sauna, an exercise room, a wine cellar and an award-winning sound room just for music. “For years, all we did was work,” explains Judy. “We really wanted to spend time with our families and get to know our nieces and nephews better. It was critical to create a space where people felt comfortable and wanted to stay.” Upstairs, a foyer reminiscent of a mountain peak welcomes the couple into a living space that makes the most of those incredible views while maintaining an intimate feel thanks to thoughtful nooks. “The house has a human scale, even when it’s just the two of us,” says Bob. While extremely proud of the end result, Stinson credits the homeowners with much of the project’s success. “They loved both the big ideas and the little details,” the architect explains. “I felt like we were creating a work of art.”

BIG
TIME THE BUILDERS ASSOCIATION OF THE TWIN CITIES HONORS INDUSTRY LEADERS. BY MARGUERITE HAPPE
Every year, the Builders Association of the Twin Cities gathers the upper echelon of builders, remodelers and trade partners for an evening of glitz and glamour at the Building Industry Gala. On the BIG Night, BATC recognizes excellence in business, craftsmanship, community involvement and ethics. The event showcases the extraordinary effort and dedication evident amongst the organization’s membership. Along with a host of other coveted awards, BATC named Homes by Tradition the Builder of the Year and Vujovich Design Build the Remodeler of the Year. Enjoying a solid reputation for excellence, Homes by Tradition has specialized in building houses ranging from $600,000 to $1.5 million in the south metro area since 2004. For president Dean Nelson, this accolade reflects a long tradition of superior ethical standards. “The majority of our projects are referrals, and I think that’s because our internal business philosophy results in a positive and rewarding experience for our customers,” he explains. “In any home project, there are many moving parts, and we manage everything from accounting to paperwork to customer support in a manner that is always fair and ethical.” Ed Roskowinski, president of Vujovich Design Build, echoes the sentiment of appreciation for the industry and the tradition of the awards: “Our company culture really values integrity, trust, and relationships with both our clients and our trade partners. For us, it’s about the long-term relationship.” The company’s 40th anniversary closely follows the accolade. “Our roots are in the historic restoration realm, and we primarily remodel architecturally significant homes,” explains Roskowinski. “We have a long history of executing solutions to complex and complicated problems, regardless of scale. I still get excited every single day about problem solving to fit specific client needs and challenges. My team and I feel tremendously honored to be recognized by BATC for our hard work and dedication.”

Making An
ENTRANCE KOLBE WINDOWS & DOORS ON THE ART OF FIRST IMPRESSIONS. BY MARGUERITE HAPPE
How long does it take to see, evaluate and dispense judgment? Scientists claim it requires mere seconds for something to make an impact on the human mind. Despite best efforts to avoid judging metaphorical books by their covers, we are almost infallibly influenced by our first impressions. According to Ron Hopkins, general manager of Kolbe Gallery Twin Cities, this is one reason to treat your home’s entryway with the utmost of care: “If the entrance door isn’t of the highest quality, that makes a statement,” he notes. “The materials often determine the impression of quality. For example, a solid-wood door conveys a different impression than a simulated-wood door.” Updating exteriors with custom colors, systems and technology is one of this season’s hottest home trends, and not simply for aesthetic purposes. “Most homeowners aren’t aware how many configurations can be used to address aesthetics and functionality,” says Hopkins. “From multi-point locks to electronic locking systems that utilize compatible integration devices like keypads or biometric readers, entryway technology can improve a home’s appearance while being tremendously functional.” For those looking to revitalize their home’s efficiency and appearance, Hopkins explains that it’s crucial to ask several questions: How can this entryway reflect my personal aesthetic? If I want to include glass in the door, what options offer privacy while still letting in light? What unique features can be used to maximize the opening, such as sidelights, transoms or pivot doors? “Entrances are all about improving curb appeal and crafting a statement,” notes Hopkins. “From automation to custom colors and more, we help our clients create high-quality, aesthetically pleasing entryway systems for any style.”

All in Good Time KOHLER SIGNATURE STORE BATHROOMS BLEND ELEGANCE AND EASE. BY MARGUERITE HAPPE
Novelist Henry James led a life laden with quotable remarks, but the most abiding ones were those addressing the absolute urgency of the human lifespan. Quoth he: “The right time is any time that one is still so lucky as to have.” And this attitude toward time as a gift is of utmost import in our digital age. When Kohler Signature Store Senior Sales Design Consultant Emily Pueringer describes her work, it’s apparent she understands one of the key aspects of thoughtful, purposeful design: the extraordinary opportunities to save — and thereby reinvigorate — her clients’ time and lifestyles.

Her latest project showcases her intricate attention to detail as well as the tremendous possibilities that the Kohler Signature Store affords when it comes to creating efficient, beautiful, functional spaces. The overarching objective here? To create an open, relaxing ambiance while incorporating smart storage and timesaving, easy-to-clean fixtures. “These clients first came in to renovate their bathroom because they had a leak; they came to us because they weren’t sure where to begin,” says Pueringer. “I guided them through the remodel with our partner Quality Cut Remodelers, making the process as enjoyable as possible.” Her extensive background in tile and decorative plumbing came in handy when it came to the comprehensive tile install. “The overall feel is refined rustic, so we used incredible wood-look tile that requires no special care or maintenance,” she explains. “It’s easy to clean and features radiant heating yet provides a more natural-looking environment. We even used the tile in the shower instead of tiny mosaic tiles with extensive grout to clean.” Pueringer also incorporated custom creations from Ann Sacks and the Kohler Signature Store’s Surfaces tailored tile program, a select offering of tiles for a variety of applications and budgets.
The Kohler Sunstruck freestanding oval bath visually opens up the space and allows for simple care. “This is a family home, with kids frequently using the tub,” explain Pueringer. “Single-lever chrome faucets, which we used throughout the bathroom, are easy to clean and very functional. The tub cellar remains very striking and comfortable.” Robern cabinets, carried by Kohler, allow for smart storage to make daily cleanup a breeze. “With the cabinets, everything has its place,” says Pueringer. “They not only have USB strips to charge your cell phone but include a magnetic strip along the inside to hold tweezers, nail clippers and more. Nothing has to live on your countertop anymore.” If the choice of medicine cabinet and the amount of grout initially seem like minor details, they take on wholly larger significance when it means less time cleaning and more time enjoying life with family and friends. “Here at the Kohler Signature Store, we truly are experts at what we do,” notes Pueringer. “From smart storage to in-floor heating to easy-to-clean, high-quality fixtures, we’re a one-stop shop for bathroom and kitchen design that truly enhances your quality of life.”

Edwin Lundie Style AN ICONIC ARCHITECT’S CREATIONS ACROSS FIVE DECADES. BY P E T E R O ’ TO O L E
We had just moved into our Edwin Lundie–designed Cape Cod cottage in St. Paul when we heard about the annual Lundie cabin tour along the North Shore. We booked a stay at the Lutsen Lodge (also one of the architect’s creations) and soon found ourselves in the good company of fellow Lundie admirers. Not only did we catch that Lake Superior fever, we also returned home to appreciate even more how his iconic architecture is defined by the use of traditional materials and the talents of local artisans — conveying the spirit of authenticity and the charm of human craftsmanship. As we began restoring our home, we found the sketches and plans for our cottage, along with the drawings and elevations for every one of Lundie’s commissions, all meticulously filed in the University of Minnesota’s Northwest Architectural Archives. Having recently published a photography book about Paris, I was seeking a new subject. Serendipitously, I had found both a topic and a passion: illustrating the architect’s drawings, together with my photographs, in a tome about his illustrious career. I returned to the archives every week for the next three and a half years and dedicated myself to meeting the devoted owners of Lundie homes across the North. Lundie began his career just out of high school as an apprentice to Cass Gilbert, known for his design of the Minnesota State Capitol. He went on to become lead architect for Emmanuel Masqueray, the French-trained designer of the Cathedral of Saint Paul and Minneapolis’s Basilica of Saint Mary. By 31, Lundie had started his own practice. From his city houses to his country estates to his vernacular designs for the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum buildings, his creations continue to resonate today.

In the 1920s, Lundie finely articulated a solid Cotswold home for a St. Paul client who favored the aesthetics of the early English countryside. He employed such materials as slate, brick and rough-cut Minnesota limestone, integrating details including oriel windows, quartersawn millwork and distinctive chimneys — a unique embellishment that characterized the architect’s creations. In the thirties, Lundie designed an English Tudor along Gem Lake. His client also requested stables as well as cottages for the grooms and caretakers as he and his neighbors enjoyed running their horses around the lake. The home’s comfortable interior spaces evoke an Old World charm and feature Lundie’s signature pegged plank floors, batten doors and hand-detailed finishes. In the 1940s, the architect designed a country estate reminiscent of historic Williamsburg set into the rolling hills near Winona. Its interior finishes reflect the periods from early Colonial through Georgian, with wrought-iron hardware, custom light fixtures, and hand-forged hinges and latches.

Over the next two decades, Lundie revived the earliest Scandinavian post-and-beam and stave-construction techniques, using local timber, stone and craftsmanship. He designed nearly two dozen structures in this style, including a Swedish red cabin along the North Shore and his finale, the peaceful Brule River cabins. Through his inherent sense of planning, he afforded his clients beautiful sightlines from the forest edge to the waters below. Time and again in his journey as an architect, Edwin Lundie demonstrated flexibility and sensitivity in his willingness to accommodate his clients’ wishes while blending architectural styles in a vocabulary recognizable as his own. His creations remind us of his skill in composition, his appreciation for the landscape in its unique relationship with each of his structures and his respect for the people within them. Edwin H. Lundie: Five Decades, A Journey of Art & Architecture is available through the Minnesota Historical Society shop.

JOHN KRAEMER & SONS John R. Kraemer, vice president
Top tip: Choose a builder who you can trust and who you think you’re going to have fun with. You’re making a large investment in terms of time and money. If it takes a year to build your house, you’re going to want to work with someone you can trust and have fun with.
How to get inspired: There are so many good tools online today. When we used to meet with clients, they’d bring a folder of magazine tear outs they’d saved over the years. Now we have Houzz and Pinterest, which can really help people figure out what they want. Your company’s trademark: Our trademark is our quality, our longevity and our service. There are a lot of here-today, gone-tomorrow builders. We’ve been in business for 38 years because we take care of our clients long after they move into their new home.
Most memorable project: For a musician who is big into entertaining, we actually built a nightclub on the lower level, complete with a
recording studio, stage and bar-top tables. We also built a bowling alley, two-story sport court, golf simulator and wine room — it was really all centered around entertaining.
Secret to a great project: It sounds cliché, but it’s the same as the secret to a great marriage: communication. Common misconception: That building can’t be fun. With the right builder, it’s entirely possible to truly enjoy the process. We have a track record of making people happy and having a good time.

STREETER & ASSOCIATES Steven Streeter, president
Common misconception: That modern homes are less expensive and easier to build than traditional homes. At Streeter & Associates, we partner with leading architects to build both modern and traditional homes. Due to the need for meticulous finishes and craftsmanship, a modern home often requires more time, effort and expertise with the fit and finish. Trend you love: Mixing modern details with traditional living. Trend you’re over: Waterfall or wrap countertop details. Top tip: Early planning and collaboration with the architect, builder, interior designer and landscape architect are key to the success of a custom home.
How to get inspired: Working with an experienced and professional team allows clients to safely explore options and enjoy learning about the process. Tour recently completed projects with your builder to view a variety of custom home designs, materials and building products for inspiration. Your company’s trademark: We build timeless modern and traditional homes that are designed by leading architects and designers. Our craftsmanship is extraordinary and highly customized for each client.

HAGSTROM BUILDER Peter Hagstrom, president
Reason to build: The biggest reason to build is that you have the ability to have exactly the home that your dollar can afford. You can start from scratch and create your vision to your fullest extent, picking your lot, your home style, your lifestyle elements. No other experience will allow you such flexibility and no outcome will offer you such reward. Top tip: Ask questions. It’s amazing how few questions people interviewing a prospective contractor ask. Remember this involves two of the most important things to a family: your home and your money. This is an investment, and you should balance emotional desires with business savvy.
Common misconception: That the lowest bid is the one you should go with. Better builders will all tell you this is actually a red flag. Comparable bids, considering all the pertinent, necessary elements, should be within a decent range of one another. If there is one that is substantially lower, buyer beware. Trend you love: I love mixing finishes in a home and believe that the beauty of the home is found in the details. In my latest project, a modern farmhouse, I combined white oak and bead board with custom steel staircase rails and concrete bathroom vessels. The juxtaposition of finishes creates an unexpected sophistication. Trend you’re over: Infill homes that all look the same. While I strongly believe that a new home in an existing neighborhood should be harmonious, it certainly doesn’t need to be homogeneous.

Your company’s trademark: This is who we are: a builder who leads the construction process, communicates strongly, implements quality, and understands architecture and design.
How to get inspired: Travel to destinations that incorporate your architectural style; these could be boutique hotels, certain parts of the world or show houses featured in national magazines. Trend you love: Bringing windows down to countertops or almost to the floor consistently throughout a new home. This really enhances the indoor/outdoor relationship while showcasing high-end design.
Trend you’re over: Too much gray paint — it is devoid of imagination. There are so many colors out there; add an accent wall or create a space that is more exciting than a blank slate. Most memorable project: Building a home on a lake, where the homeowner wanted an indoor swimming pool, a sauna, a sport court and an ice rink. So fun for the kids, it could be called Disney North.
Secret to a great project: When selecting your builder, trust is critical. Every homeowner must trust the builder to manage the costs and quality of the project, because a home becomes one of your most valuable assets. Find a compatible relationship between you and the builder as this person will be a big part of your life for the next few months to years as you create your home.

NOR-SON Eddie Near, director of project development How to get inspired: Think beyond rooms and finishes. Dig deeper into your passions, hobbies and interests. Take note of architectural styles and details while you travel or dine at your favorite restaurant. Take pictures of experiences that speak to the essence of your family. Reason to build: To get a truly personalized home that showcases you as a person and surrounds you with comforting spaces that no one else can explain but you. You can cast your own vision and create your own memories.
Common misconception: Not understanding level-of-finish expectations and construction costs. With sites such as Houzz and Pinterest, clients have easy access to numerous images and inspiration — but they don’t always have an understanding of what it actually costs. Your company’s trademark: We’ve been fortunate to deliver visions of the most entrepreneurial clients, the most creative designers
and the most detailed artisans who are driven to create opportunities, memories and legacies. We interpret needs, deliver experiences and create environments that enhance how people live and work.
Trend you love: Rustic elegance — the combination of timber and stone with a modern twist of luxury. Trend you’re over: Feeling the need to succumb to trends. It’s refreshing to see clients venture out by mixing materials and styles. Most memorable project: The French-inspired Forever Estate on Smithtown Bay holds a special place for me. The newlywed owners had an amazing vision for how they wanted to live their entrepreneurial life of business ventures and family adventures.

Ice BREAKER A LIFELONG FISHERWOMAN HITS THE ICE FOR THE FIRST TIME. B Y K AT E N E L S O N
Growing up Minnesotan, I’ve long had the fresh waters of our 10,000 lakes running through my veins. Summers were spent in lake country reeling in sunfish, perch and the rare walleye. I learned how to cast long before I learned cursive. I squealed with delight when overturned logs revealed fat nightcrawlers, our bait of choice. I basked in the season’s endless sun and the serenity of the still lake. Never, however, did I brave the chill of winter to partake in open-water fishing’s frigid counterpart. And why would I? Ice-fishing lacks everything I love about the summer sport (namely, the summer). Never one to pass up an opportunity for adventure, however, I enthusiastically accepted when I was challenged to give it a try for the first time last year. But even in that moment of stubborn resolve, my confidence faltered as my mind swirled with questions: How would we stand the cold? Would the ice crack beneath us? Would the fish even bite? What if I had to pee? If I had to do it, I was going to do it right. Which is why I recruited my friend Travis Frank to show me the ropes. A lifelong outdoorsman, he has long served as a producer for Ron Schara’s award-winning media company (think Minnesota Bound) and is one of the North’s preeminent pro fishing guides (though he’d be the last one to tell you that). Most importantly, he handled my barrage of questions with such ease that I was almost looking forward to my maiden ice-fishing experience. Almost. The day before we were set to hit the Lake Minnetonka ice, I bought an absurd amount of those little hand warmers and rounded up all the winter garb I could get my hands on. Frank stifled a laugh as he watched me roll out of my car, bundled up like a little kid after the first big snow. We made our way out to one of his secret spots and pulled all the gear from the bed of his pickup. He fired up the auger, narrating as he drilled a hole, then handed it over to me. If I were going to do this, I guess I wasn’t getting the kid-glove treatment. Settled into the surprisingly snug pop-up, Frank and I fixed our eyes on the underwater-camera screen. He explained that, much like us, fish tend to be sedate come winter, so line movements should be slow. Which was perfectly fine by me, as that was all my bulky gloves would really allow. I was starting to get antsy when I finally caught my first fish — a tiny bluegill, but a fish all the same. All told, we hooked some 60 fish that day. As the hours passed, I began to understand the appeal of ice-fishing: the cozy cocoon of the pop-up, the quiet solitude of the frozen lake. And as we packed up our gear, I gazed around at the glowing homes sitting along the shoreline, tucked snugly beneath a blanket of stars. Perhaps this ice-fishing thing wasn’t so bad after all.

Firearm enthusiasts, rejoice. A self-proclaimed “guntry” club (gun club meets country club), Stock & Barrel Gun Club offers an upscale take on the traditional, often utilitarian firing-range setting. The upscale concept debuted in Chanhassen last May to much fanfare, and a second location opened in the fall in New Hope. The flagship locale’s posh environment features amenities including a comfortable lounge area, an expert-staffed pro shop and 14 25-yard shooting lanes equipped with a state-of-the-art air-filtration system to reduce smoke and lead exposure. While the range is open to the public seven days a week, Stock & Barrel offers three membership levels. Corporate memberships are available to business groups, such as leadership and sales teams. The Liberty membership includes unlimited range use, lane reservation, and members-only pricing on firearm rental, ammunition and retail items. The elite Caliber Club membership allows access to a keycard-restricted lounge, private firing lanes, and an exclusive locker room with secure storage. It also comes with such perks as guest passes, free rentals, firearm cleaning and more. The Caliber Club Lounge is rustic luxe, replete with an inviting fireplace, wet bar, cigar lounge and large-screen TVs. And all Stock & Barrel members have access to the range 30 minutes before it opens to the public. With a focus on safety, education and training, Stock & Barrel regularly hosts classes for enthusiasts of all ability and experience levels. Topics range from basic firearm safety and handgun shooting to advanced carry skills and drawing from the holster. The Chanhassen facility is home to a virtual range, which is available to members and also utilized in education sessions to help novices develop good judgment across a variety of scenarios. When it comes to Twin Cities firing ranges, Stock & Barrel really is top gun.

Super Natural PRACTICING PRESENCE IN THE GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS. BY EMMA CUTLER
PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMMA CUTLER
It was hard to put a name to the feeling as this was not something I had felt before — the humidity on my skin, in my bones, not like a ton-of-bricks-Minneapolis-summer humidity. No, this was different; it was cut with a refreshing, unfaltering sea breeze. I was at the end of the world where volcanic matter rises up from the darkest depths of the ocean, where the sky and water seem to go on forever. I was disconnected from the outside world in a way I had never been before. And as soon as I accepted this, as soon as my agitation passed, I was free.

I was aboard the grandest yacht on the water, Ecoventura’s brand-new MV Origin, cruising the Galåpagos Islands. Designed with luxury in mind, the sleek 145-foot vessel accommodates a mere 20 passengers in 10 exquisitely appointed staterooms. It was in this intimate setting that I was introduced to the wonders of the archipelago. Among the 13 devoted Ecuadorian crew members were two naturalists, men who had learned to swim shortly after learning to walk. They have experienced volcanoes erupting, whales breaching and tourism evolving in their beloved home. After the first couple panga (dinghy) rides, hikes and dives, I was transformed, no longer concerned about Instagramming my experience. I realized I wanted to soak up as much information from the naturalists as possible.

Their knowledge of the archipelago was astonishing, and they took pride in sharing their love for the land and water. I wanted to know the natural world like never before. The convergence of three major oceanic currents brings a remarkable mix of marine life to the Galápagos, with some of the most beautiful beaches in the world tucked away here. We snorkeled with manta rays, black-tip reef sharks, penguins and charming baby sea lions. We marveled at the flightless cormorant, the waved albatross, the Galápagos petrel and the swallow-tailed gull. We saw frigatebirds soaring, blue-footed boobies dancing, pink flamingos feasting and marine iguanas sunning. And we reveled at the fact that 20 percent of the marine life of these islands is endemic, found nowhere else on earth. The time to go the Galápagos is now, and the MV Origin is the most ecofriendly yacht cruising these strange, beautiful, important islands that gave birth to Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species. It is one of the only destinations in the world where you can fully disconnect, a telling reminder that constant connectivity isn’t an accurate measure of the survival of the fittest.

Throughout my nearly three decades living in Minnesota, I’ve fudged my way through my story of origin. When someone would ask if I were native to the Land of 10,000 Lakes, I’d explain that it’s all I’ve ever known — though I wasn’t born here. Which would inevitably lead to further inquiry: Well, then, where were you born? In Alaska, I’d explain, in a small southeastern town called Ketchikan. Soon there’d be cooing over the postcard-worthy backdrop, the bountiful wildlife, the laid-back lifestyle. But the discussion would grind to a halt when I would sheepishly reveal that I hadn’t returned since I was a toddler. I’ll get back there, I would halfheartedly promise as the topic of conversation shifted. But to be honest, until very recently, I didn’t really have a yearning to return. Once the travel bug bit, I started checking other destinations off my list, inevitably pushing my birthplace to the bottom of the page. I just wasn’t interested in visiting an Alaskan hamlet when I could be exploring the elaborate temples of Bangkok or strolling the cobblestone streets of Prague. But you simply must go, I’d be told time and time again. And you must be at least a little curious, I’d be urged over and over. And then, all of a sudden, I did want to go back. And I was curious. But I was also overcome with an unexpected anxiety: What would it be like to be a tourist in my own hometown? Could I find my way home?

Instead of planning the bejesus out of the trip, as I am so wont to do, I found myself avoiding the subject altogether in a futile attempt to avoid these perplexing emotions. When it came time to pack my luggage, I shifted into autopilot and convinced myself all was fine. And then, while I was standing in the airport security line, that unexplained apprehension returned. It lasted for the duration of the journey to Seattle and then on to Ketchikan, an itinerary that somehow seemed lengthier than the long haul to Asia. When I finally arrived shortly after dusk, it was dark and foggy, what I assumed this part of Alaska must look like most of the time. The next morning when I pulled back the bedroom curtains to reveal picturesque Nichols Passage, I felt my angst slowly starting to melt away. Later that day, when I explained why I was there, that I was born there, a new line of questioning emerged: Did I feel a connection to the city? I smiled, unsure how to answer. To be honest, I didn’t. The oversize Salmon Capital of the World sign, the cruise ships moored at the dock, the myriad tourist traps

hawking their tchotchkes and trinkets — it didn’t feel like home. But then I decided to cut myself — and my birthplace — some slack, to stop taking it all so seriously. And that’s when I dove into the experience wholeheartedly. I fished for salmon, my biceps burning after reeling in an elusive king. I took a floatplane out over Tongass National Forest, marveling at the millions of acres untouched by man. I watched a bald eagle pluck a fish from the water with its mighty talons, its prowess on full display. I stood amongst the towering totem poles in nearby Saxman Village, humbled by their history. I toured the town with Joe Williams Jr., hanging on his every word as he explained the rich culture and heritage of his people, the Tlingit tribe. And then, all of a sudden, it hit me: a feeling of connection, of belonging, of hometown pride. The unadulterated beauty of the land, the pure air that somehow fills your lungs a little fuller, the undeniable sense that a great adventure awaits right outside your door — I can lay claim to it all. And Alaska, as it turns out, can lay claim to this Minnesotan’s heart.

“We’ve always looked upon it as a people business.”
Hubert White has been outfitting Twin Cities gentlemen with a certain timeless taste for more than a century. Three generations have led the store through sartorial and social changes. What’s the secret to the downtown Minneapolis shop’s success? It’s not simply good taste. It’s the close personal relationships with clients. “We’ve always looked upon it as a people business,” says proprietor Bob White. “Yes, we carry some of the best products in the world — and we’re very proud of that. But as soon as you get too wound up in that and forget about clients and the rest of the people who make it work, you’re in trouble.” And so when the Hubert White team travels to New York City to buy for the upcoming season, they keep in mind current clients and their tastes. “We edit everything down so we know it’s something our clients will be proud to wear,” explains White. “There are nuances every season, and we have worked really hard to find the best.” hubertwhite.com

JOHN WOLF LIQUOR BOY
“Who else opens bottles of Louis XIII for their customers?”
L I Q U O R R E TA I L
Meet the man who is curating your liquor cabinet in a warehouse-style store. His name is John Wolf, and he’s the owner of Minneapolis’s storied Chicago Lake Liquors as well as Liquor Boy, located in St. Louis Park. Wolf quickly realized that customers craved an edited selection that didn’t break the bank; they wanted a Costco price with a more personal shopping experience. So he created Liquor Boy, hiring a knowledgeable staff and creating a fun environment to raise the collective spirits of the Twin Cities. And it’s not only the store itself that’s a cool concept. While the staff helps with everything from stocking the bar for lavish weddings to offering pairing suggestions for intimate dinner parties, Liquor Boy also hosts exclusive events. Recently, it was a tasting of the $2,900-a-bottle Louis XIII by Rémy Martin at Martin Patrick 3. “Who else opens bottles of Louis XIII for their customers?” he muses. “No one except Liquor Boy. It’s crazy, but that’s who we are.” liquor-boy.com

“It’s a time machine. Time is f inite.”
Nick Fancher still loves the smell of jet fuel burning in the morning. “It’s an extremely addicting industry,” he says. “It’s a blessing to have a hobby that I can do for a living.” It’s a hobby he fell in love with at the tender age of 12, after riding in the back of a plane during a cousin’s flight lesson. Although he has his pilot’s license, Fancher doesn’t fly the fleet of planes in commission at his Minnesota-based company, Private Jet Solutions. “I’m a business person and marketer to the core,” he says, which is how he spied an opportunity to develop a thriving private-charter and jet-acquisition business even in a quieter economic time for business and personal travel. But it isn’t just about skipping the security line. “It’s a time machine,” Fancher says. “Time is finite. It’s really neat to see families come together more than they could normally and spend some quality time together. It’s also exhilarating to help companies be more successful — often, privately held companies are adamant that face-to-face business still matters, and they outperform because of that.” privatejetsolutions.com

WINEMAKING
“We saw it as an adventure.”
Bill Spell and his wife, Tiki, had long been wine drinkers, collectors and fans. Then they met a promising young winemaker and decided to partner with him, becoming the owners of Spell Estate winery based out of Santa Rosa, California. That leap is not one that happens every day, but the Minnesota natives saw it as a natural fit, something they enjoyed doing together and could see themselves doing long into the future. “We saw it as an adventure,” says Bill. The same three goals they began with continue to fuel their passion to this day: Make a high-quality wine, have industry critics validate it through ratings and see the wine on restaurant lists, being served to people enjoying it. “If we could do that — we’d be satisfied,” he notes. “Success follows that.” Seems that strategy has worked out. The Spells were dining out in Minneapolis recently and, upon asking for a wine suggestion, were recommended the Spell Pinot Noir. “That was pretty cool,” Bill admits. “When that happens, you can say to yourself, ‘Yeah, this is working.’” spellestate.com

THE HELP THE TRADITIONAL WHITE-GLOVED BUTLER MORPHS INTO AN ULTRA-MODERN MANAGER. BY MARGUERITE HAPPE

Magazine of the North
An invisible world underlies the manicured lawns and spotless manses of the ultra-wealthy. From oil magnates and corporate moguls to royals and oligarchs, ultra-high-net-worth individuals often find themselves laden with multiple homes, yachts, private aircraft and acreage. As such, today’s rapidly flourishing industry of household staffing produces a flurry of employees who pull strings and coordinate schedules to ensure that properties and people remain immaculately arranged — for those whose lifestyles warrant it, of course. At the very heart of this often-massive effort remains one of the most poignant figures: the butler. The identity of the modern-day butler is in flux, caught between traditional expectations and modern managerial requirements, explains Steven Ferry, chairman of the
International Institute of Modern Butlers. “There is passion today — an emotional connection instead of the stiff upper lip,” he says. “But none of this could work without the centuries of expertise developed by butlers on how to provide service in the closeness of the employer’s home.” Ferry himself served as a private estate manager before training as a butler under famed household professional Ivor Spencer in the late eighties — something akin to an investment banker cutting his teeth with Warren Buffett. When I first ask him about the labyrinthine industry of the modern-day butler, Ferry instantly corrects me: “I believe you mean estate or household manager.” Indeed, a butler in today’s world must possess a skill set that would utterly bemuse the Jeeves of yore. Competence in mixology as well as food and beverage

service are essential, notes Ferry, as are fine art and furnishings selection and care; cigar selection, care and service; crystal, silver and jewelry selection and care; use of in-home entertainment, control and security systems and modern communication devices; care of fine automobiles and chauffeuring; management of flight and nautical staff and equipment; and more. Training in this specialized industry is no low-budget affair. The eight-week program at the Netherlands’ International Butler Academy, for example, runs some $15,000. Ferry tells me that television shows such as Downton Abbey have likely contributed to the strength of the job market. According to Sara Vestin Rahmani, owner of British household-staffing agency Bespoke Bureau and the British Butler Academy, international demand for a traditional butler is growing. “For the new super-rich, an English butler is a status symbol,” she explains. “They bring sophistication and Old World charm to the halls of otherwise ostentatious homes, a touch of class alongside the gold taps and garish chandeliers.” The market for household staff is exploding even in the North. Rahmani has placed several butlers throughout the region and hopes to further develop the market in years to come. “We find that our Midwestern clients are keen to experience some old-age British charm in their lives and homes,” she notes. She adds that Northerners tend to be fair, straightforward and generous employers. And across the region, more luxury hotels than ever before are offering butler services as an amenity. The Langham, Chicago, for instance, employs a rotating staff of eight butlers specializing in scheduling, unpacking and pressing clothing, watching after children, and even drawing baths.

The household-staffing industry is a competitive if lucrative field. Today’s butler might find work at luxury hotels, in palaces, on super yachts or in the cabins of private jets. The pay scale varies depending on position, experience and placement. A beginning salary might start around $40,000, while someone managing multiple estates, a budget in the hundreds of millions, or tens or hundreds of staffers can bring in $600,000 a year. And while the duties of a household manager have certainly evolved, Rahmani says that the most important aspect of the job remains the intimate relationship between employer and employee. “As the relationship grows, the butler gets to observe his master’s quirks, his weaknesses and his vices, some of which are not always palatable,” she explains. “Once the butler has earned his boss’s trust, the lines between master and servant begin to blur. A butler will never expect to be treated equally, nor would he want to be, but the hope is that one day the master will come to rely upon having the butler by his side. This is the unspoken understanding: that one day the balance of power will shift and the butler will know more about what his master wants than the master himself.”
