“THESE COLLECTIONS HAD BEEN BREWING INSIDE ME FOR QUITE SOMETIME.” 1.Hey April, Can you tell us about yourself and how you got into textile design? I feel very fortunate for the unconventional path that led me to fabric design. Sewing has been a part of my family’s history for as many generations as we can trace back. I personally started out sewing at a pretty early age and I’ve always wanted a creative career, however fabric design was not on my radar until much later. In 2008 I helped my mother open her fabric store, Sew To Speak. It was about a year after that when I attended my first Quilt Market as her buyer that my eyes were opened to this brilliant industry. When I saw the booths of all the fabric designers I fell in love immediately and knew I was were I was meant to be. It felt like coming home.
Not long after my first Market I began teaching classes and publishing my sewing patterns, all the time secretly longing to be a fabric designer. Then by the way of several perfectly aligned coincidences Pat and I met. She asked me to be part of her, then brand new, idea for Limited Edition Designers at AGF. I’m ever so grateful that she took that chance on me! Now I’ve produced six collections for Art Gallery and I’m every bit as in love with fabric design as I was when I first discovered it! 2. For this season you’re releasing two collections in one month! Exciting! How did you manage your time to create both collections? Well to be honest these collections had been brewing inside me for quite sometime. So, when I sat down to the drawing board they truly poured right out of me. I pulled some late nights nearing deadline, but the work never once felt tiring or forced. I think when it’s right, it’s right. Arizona After and Heritage are two of my favorite lines to date and both are very meaningful to me. Heritage for it’s connection to my family roots and Arizona After for
4. Many of the prints in your collections are earthy and have a southwestern flair. Do you have any special memories that took place in the southwest?
its connection to my very first collection and the realization of a dream! Time management can often be an issue with two young kids and many commitments but everything fell into alignment this time! 3. Arizona After revisits many ideas from your first limited edition collection Arizona. What inspired you to update the original collection? I have wanted to elaborate on my Arizona collection for a while. Being that it was my first line and I was entirely new to fabric design I didn’t have a lot of the knowledge that I do now, 5 collections later. So while I absolutely love that first collection the way it is. I’ve longed to revisit and perhaps try to improve upon it in new ways. Also, because the first line was a Limited Edition collection, I was ‘limited’ to only 8 prints in one colorway and that simply isn’t enough for a fabric lover like me! I was so excited to be able to reproduce some of my favorite prints in new colors and to add new designs to the line that work with both the originals and the After’s.
I get that question a lot and it’s a great one. The fact is that I didn’t have any first hand memories of the southwest until very recently. All my inspiration and style has come via osmosis, or maybe inherited, through my my father and my grandmother and the art and stories they shared with me. My dad grew up in southern california and my family traveled around that region a lot but that was long before I came into the picture. However, our home growing up was very influenced by a southwestern vibe. My own art has always been deeply inspired by that fact and by the old photo albums and slides I spent hours looking at as a kid. I’ve dreamt of the desert since childhood so finally this spring I took a trip with my husband and daughters to Joshua Tree California. It was everything I’d hoped and more. We were able to visit my great grandparents memorial and see where my father was born. The cacti were even bigger than I could’ve imagined and in many ways I felt like I was retracing my relatives footsteps. It was a very special trip and now I can finally say that yes, I have some very special memories that took place in the southwest! 5.Heritage is all about special moments and memories that you’ve had with your family. How has your family been part of your creative career? I’m surrounded by creative family members on both sides of my family. Like I mentioned, my grandmother and my father are incredible artists, both of whom have that same earthy quality. My father is a woodburner, sculptor, builder, mobile maker, and all around fine artist and craftsman. And his mother is an illustrator, writer and a historian. They both greatly inspire the style of my work. My mother, and my grandmother on her side, were the catalyst for me when it comes to the type of art I make today. They taught
me to sew and surrounded me with handmade quilts and clothing. My parents and my grandparents have always made art available to me and saw the need for it in our lives. When I think of the four of them and the influence they had on me, it’s no wonder I became a fabric designer. It’s the perfect combination of the creative qualities I admire in each of them and I have been very blessed to have the encouragement and love of family through every step along my creative path! 6. In addition to being a fabric designer you’re a talented pattern designer! Which prints from your new collections would you love to see paired up with your patterns? I’m very excited about rayon at the moment so I’d have to say that I’d love to see The Staple Dress in Treasured Karmes. Well, maybe a Staple in one of every rayon print, and one of each in The Date Night Dress, and The Riding Peplum too. Goodness, I simply can’t narrow it down. I want to make every single thing in rayon!! Haha. 7. Many of the prints in your collections are great for adult garment sewing and gender neutral kids sewing. Have you made anything for your kids?
8. You dabble in everything from designing, to sewing, to even exploring other crafts like macrame. When was that ah-ha moment when you realized that you were a maker? I’ve been making for as far back as my memories go. I tried out so many crafts as a kid. I loved everything, from sewing to beading, macrame to paper mache. I think I was simply born with a need to make stuff. However, my real ‘ah-ha’ moment came after I had my own children and a new fire for crafting was lit. After having my daughters, art became a vital part of my identity. I had to fill myself up with what I was most passionate about so that I could show them that joy. It’s the way I share myself with them and with the world. I know that seems entirely contradictory but I think fellow parenting artists will definitely understand. Crafting for me is both a form a meditation and self expression and without it I’m incomplete. 9. What’s your advice to living a creatively fulfilled life?
GO FOR IT! Living a creative life can sometimes be scary and it often feels vulnerable to share your creative self with outsiders but don’t let the critic inside your mind fool you.
