Mathew Boudreaux of Mister Domestic learned to sew as a kid, but never really got into it until he had his daughter Helena, who is now four and a half. He thought it would be a great way to connect with her if he could make her cool clothes. With a new motivation to up his attention-to-detail, the quality and coolness far exceeded even his own expectations. Once he started posted his projects on social media, the quilting world quickly took notice of his fearless use of color and print, incomprehensibly fast output, carefree enthusiasm and humor, and ability to seek out, acquire and share new skills. Making projects from fabric weaving to English Paper Piecing to apparel to the 3-dimensional, you can find his fabric party on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. As a fabric designer, get ready to bring this party into overdrive as he translates his chic, edgy, and whimsical style into an in person experience for everyone to enjoy. When creating something visual, Mathew’s creative journey begins in his mind filled with countless ideas and life changing experiences. Those concepts are executed the moment ideas hit by creating two dimensional patterns. His concepts are further developed through the exploration of pictures he has captured and mood boards. The final idealization of a collection is then taken to illustrator. From this point on, Mathew uses an arsenal of skills that he’s gained from being immersed in the sewing industry to create relatable designs for sewists of all ages. He encourages makers to dive right into their ideas, avoid over thinking, and to focus on logistics once the work is executed to fulfill an exciting creative journey.

“...WITH HER INTUITION AS OUR GUIDE,
I SAW AND FELT THE EXPERIENCE ALMOST THROUGH HER EYES” 1. Hi Mathew! Congratulations on releasing your second collection, “Aura!” We understand you drew a lot of inspiration for these prints from traveling to Hawaii with your daughter! Can you elaborate more on how those travels turned into fabrics? Well, Helena and I flew to Hawaii on a whim because she wanted to go and I was like “Um okay, why not?” Now before y’all start thinking I have a money tree, I travel a lot for my day job and had just enough airline and hotel points to take her, so I was all spontaneous and decided to take advantage and create some memories with my daughter. And for much of the trip, I totally disconnected and tried to be as present as I could with Helena and let her make a lot of the decisions. With her intuition as our guide, I saw and felt the experience almost through her eyes, recognizing that we were seeing many of these things for the first time, and we were perpetually in awe and wonder. The visuals were so vibrant and the experiences were so full that my brain was flooded with inspiration when we arrived back
home, and I immediately got to designing with the experience fresh in my mind. I even knew exactly how I wanted it to feel and the colors and was brought back to Helena and my one consistent ritual on our trip. Every morning, the first thing we’d do is get me come coffee, and her some cocoa as we sat in our chairs on the balcony of our hotel room watching the sunrise...and then every night, we’d both have cocoa, sitting in those same chairs watching the sunset. 2. What are your top 5 destinations on your “Travel Bucket List?” The only place I’ve ever been overseas is “Paris” and it absolutely changed my world, so I’d love to go back there again to share it with my husband and daughter. I have to travel to “Australia” at least once before I die..and I’d love love love to go to “London.” Spending some significant time in “Tibet” has always been a fantasy to me, and then “India”... the food, the culture, the colors, it all sounds fabulous. 3. If “Aura” was a person, who would they be? At first I was all like “Um no one,” it’s chill and cool and sexy and stylish and like no one can be all those things, it’s too much pressure, but then “Lenny Kravitz” popped into my head, so let’s say him. 4. After creating your first fabric collection, “Loved to Pieces,” was the design process much easier this time around with “Aura?”
Ooooooh....that’s a tough one to answer. On one hand, I knew more about the process and the inspiration was so fresh and vibrant that it’s almost like I felt the collection created itself as I was experiencing the vacation.. but then “Loved to Pieces” exceeded my expectations for myself and what a first collection could be, so I put a lot of pressure on myself to match that. 5. What was the inspiration behind these prints? Many of the print inspiration came from things that Helena and I saw or experienced. We swam with the dolphins which was captured in the “Hula Dolphins” prints. The “Laki Island” prints were many of the flowers that we saw as we trekked around the island. The “Aloha Spirit” prints were inspired by this gorgeous, wood carved door that was in our hotel. We were lucky enough to actually see a sea turtle swimming in the ocean. The “Loulu Fans” and “Tiki Way” prints were inspired by the ubiquitous palm fans and wicker that we saw. The “Lei Burst” prints were an abstract way for me to capture the sunrise and sunset that we watched every day, and the “Mau Loa” prints were inspired by one of my fabric weaving patterns that I thought was a super neat way to present the sparkle of the water. 6. What are you excited to see makers create with this collection? Oh em gee, what am I not excited to see makers make. It’s like I design each print think-
ing about how I can use each of them, but what makers will do with them I know will exceed anything that I could ever dream of and will blow my mind. Bags, quilts, pillows, clothes, everything I’m basically always in a state of excitement when it comes to makers making things with my designs. 7. How do you stay inspired? It’s very easy to stay inspired when I stay grounded and present. When I get too stressed or on my gadgets for too long, that creative space in my brain quiets and my inspiration dims. I think that’s why “Aura” was so vibrant because it was an entire vacation of being present and I kept my technology to a minimum. Knowing this about myself, I very much expect my collections to represent those moments or experiences in my life where it all slows down and inspiration pours in, and I’m very much excited for everyone to come on this journey with me. 8. What’s on your current playlist? When I’m in my sewing space, the very first thing I do when I sit down is tell Alexa to play “Enya”.” Her music is just magic. When I’m at the gym, I go back and forth between “Beyonce” and “Rihanna” and don’t ask me to choose because it’s impossible. The rest of the soundtrack to my life involves whatever is Helena’s current musical obsession. Right now, it’s the “Equestria Girls Rainbow Rocks: soundtrack and I sometimes even listen to it when Helena isn’t around. Seriously, “My Little Pony” Rocks.
