“MAGNOLIA TREES ARE MY FAVORITE” 1.Charleston fabrics is all about the beautiful city that you arrived to after taking a cross country roadtrip. Can you tell us all about your exciting trip? In the summer of 2016, we hopped in the car and started off on a cross-country road trip from Los Angeles to Williamsburg - our final destination. We had already seen so many beautiful places but when we were leaving Savannah I decided on a whim that I wanted to stop off in Charleston for dinner. I had seen that there was a really cool dungeon called the Provost and so I was curious about this town. We arrived right after a rain storm. It was damp and lush and the architecture immediately drew me in. The old cobblestone streets, the gas lamps, colorful window boxes filled with flowers, charming storefronts, the smells, and all the history that is imbued in every nook and cranny of that city just instantly had my heart. We stopped off for dinner on Queen Street, thanks to some good tips from my followers on Instagram for a place to eat. 82 Queen, was the name of the restaurant. It felt like you were in an old southern home and sun had gone down so the room was candle lit and moody and oh, the shrimp and grits were so delicious. When dinner was over, it was pouring rain and we left the city, but I knew I’d be back. Those few short
hours made a big impression on me and it stayed with me as I arrived at my new home in Williamsburg, VA. Right away I started the Charleston collection. 2. A few of your prints feature blooming magnolias, quirky barnacles, and fun pineapples. Are any of these elements staples of South Carolina? In Charleston, the magnolia trees are my favorite, the welcoming symbol of the pineapple is everywhere, and the barnacles are my reference to oysters, the crab soup, the shrimp, the seafood that people enjoy in this city thanks to its location by the sea. There is a legend about the pineapple -- it says that a sea captain returning home from the Caribbean Islands would spear a pineapple to the gate of his house to let people know he’d returned from sea and it stood as an invitation to come by and visit. And so the pineapple is a symbol of hospitality. It’s so iconic in Charleston they built a gorgeous pineapple shaped fountain in Waterfront Park. 3. For those who don’t know, you were originally from the West coast and you recently moved to the East coast. What are some things that are completely different but you absolutely love about your new home? As a California city girl, it’s definitely shocking to find myself in Virginia where life is slower paced but we absolutely love it. We’ve settled and adapted so quickly. Here we have room to breath, to bloom and grow! 4. Has your creative schedule changed since the big move?
it’s not stiff, so it can be used perfectly for garments. I need someone to sew me a skirt with this print!!
I’ve always had a somewhat hectic working schedule and I have tried to work “normal” hours, but the hard truth and reality is that I’m a night owl. I work best when the house is quiet and everyone is sleeping. I can do this because my husband takes care of the children in the morning. 5. How do you manage your time between designing, blogging, sewing, and taking care of your family? We think you’re a super woman! Time management is a tough one but we’ve fallen into a sort of routine at my home that seems to work. Besides designing, blogging, photography and sewing, I’ve been spending a lot of time getting our home up to speed. That means shopping, antique hunting, choosing finishes, and going over plans with my husband. There is time allotted for kids movies and going to the park and getting frozen yogurt and also I take Sundays off. I’m in the church choir, so that involves 2 ½ hours a week of rehearsal. My husband and I go to the gym together and I think that’s very important time for us as a couple and as a stress release. So when my days get overfilled I find myself working into the wee hours of the morning. I think when you’re passionate about what you do you don’t notice the time ticking. 6. What do you envision being made with all of your beautiful prints? Especially, the Ananas Cream canvas! I love the Ananas Cream canvas print!! It came out so beautiful with it’s larger scale pineapples and great color balance. Also, AGF canvas is so cool because of it’s hand…
7. Now, let’s talk about Les Petits! Can you tell us all about your idea behind this classic blender collection? Way back when I began sewing I was making mostly small quilty items for my children and I bought a lot of novelty prints. I quickly realized that to achieve a good balance, tonal blenders are needed. In building my own “library” of Amy Sinibaldi prints, I craved the dots, the stripes and checks on the bias. These prints are timeless and so usable, but I also needed them in my colors. Les Petits ticks off all the boxes for me. I seriously love them SO much. 8. What style of quilters do you have in mind when you design your collections? How do they inspire you to create your designs? When designing collections, I think first and foremost… “how would I use this print?” And then I also think about the English Paper Piecer, the modern quilter, the smaller quilty zakka item maker, and the garment sewists. These are my audience. And they are also all ‘me’, as well. So scale and usability become considerations, besides, thoughts of just “Hey, isn’t this pretty!!?” 9. What’s on your sewing list for both of your sweet collections? I’m really excited to make some garments with these two collections. I see the smaller scale check and bias stripe as amazing little strips of binding at the end of a skirt or dress, or on pockets. And of course, I’m still trying figure out a perfect quilt design to make for the bed in our “Charleston” guest room. :) 10. To bring everything full circle, do you see yourself taking a cross-country roadtrip again for a family vacation? I would absolutely do another cross-country road trip. This is an amazing, beautiful country with climates and landscapes so diverse -- I could never spend too much time exploring it. It’s inspiring, and instructive, and honestly… I love being on the road!
