“I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way - things I had no words for.” - Georgia O´Keeffe I was born and raised in Belgrade, Serbia, where I live with my husband, who is Italian, and our three kids that are the true inspiration for my work. I have a Masters degree from the Faculty of Applied Arts, and have started on my PhD thesis in Applied Arts and Design, through which I get to explore even more within the fields of painting, graphic and textile design. I was raised in an artistic family, so being “crafty” and creative is something that kept me company since my early childhood. My father is a painter, my mother is a ceramic pottery artist, and my sister is a production designer. Growing up in such environment, I often had opportunities to create and design and have continued throughout my life with an array of mediums like drawing, illustrating, calligraphy, graphic design, linoleum printing, photography, and more recently, sewing. I find inspiration everywhere and I love taking many pictures of things that move me, either by their shape, texture or color. When I took the role of a mother, I found I had very limited time to dedicate to art. So, being home often and with a need to create, I discovered the world of fabric. I began to sew after repairing my mother’s vintage sewing machine and soon upgraded to a Serger. The first results were encouraging, pushing me forward to try more complicated techniques and garment pieces. In a few short years, I was led to drawing and making my own patterns after much practice with making unique and fun pieces of clothes for my daughter. My pattern label, “Like Flowers and Butterflies”, was born in 2006. Lately I am lured by quilts and quilting. I love making quilt blocks and having made a few quilts on my own has given me the desire to try and experiment much more in this field. I blog about my creative adventures at Like Flowers and Butterflies.

Q &A

Katarina

ROCCELLA

“...SOME KIND OF FRESH HOMEMADE PASTA - LIKE ORECCHIETTE OR RAVIOLI THAT WOULD BE FOLLOWED BY SOME STUFFED VEGETABLES, SALAD AND A NICE DESSERT, LIKE TIRAMISU. ” 1. Hi Katarina! Congratulations on releasing your latest collection, Decadence! With this being your thirteenth fabric collection, how has your design process evolved from the very beginning to now? Hi! Thank you so much! It’s always a huge pleasure to introduce a new fabric line and some project ideas that are included in the beautiful and inspirational lookbook. Actually my design process didn’t evolve much….I still start everything with some good and trusty “old school” sketching, drawing and painting, usually with pens, inks and pigments. But prior to that, it all begins with gathering the inspiration. Then I start doodling, drawing, painting and scanning. Once I have my motifs, elements and textures, I explore more composition and color arrangement in Photoshop. In Adobe Bridge, it’s easy to place designs side by side and to check how the prints work together.

2. We understand you drew a lot of inspiration from 18th century art and lifestyle, specifically with the Rococo art movement. Can you elaborate on how this inspiration translated into a fabric collection? I like to be inspired by different eras and important art movements. While I usually lean towards more modern aesthetic and stronger (in shapes and styles) periods, like I did with my Avantgarde line, this time I tried to immerse myself into the very lavish and decadent period of the history of art-Rococo. This movement was an artistic period that emerged in France and spread throughout the world in the late 17th and early 18th century. The word is a derivative of the French term rocaille, which means “rock and shell garden ornamentation.” The Rococo art movement addressed the most important controversy of the time – color versus drawing – and combined both to create beautiful pieces. Artists of this period focused more on attention to detail, ornamentation and the use of bright colors. Translating this focus into a collection was my goal while exaggerating the use of colors, details, textures and art elements. There are even some metallic accents on two prints from my Demure palette: “Regal Impressions Chinoise” and “Feathers Royal Ormolu” - touching that true spirit of decorative baroque! 3. If you could invite three people from art history to dinner, who would it be and what would you serve as the meal? Those three people would be: Frida Kahlo, Sonia Delaunay and any of the Bauhaus teach-

ers (Albers, Klee, Kandinsky, Itten to name a few). I would cook some typical Italian food, just like we usually do in our home with some kind of fresh homemade pasta - like orecchiette or ravioli that would be followed by some stuffed vegetables, salad and a nice dessert, like tiramisu. 4. Describe Decadence in three words. Decadent, lush and demure. 5. As a creative, what do you love most about living in Serbia? Do you have a “Top 5 List” of places you often visit there to get inspired? I like Belgrade’s (capital city of Serbia) eclectic style and the beauty of the old meeting the new. Belgrade is one of the oldest cities in Europe and since ancient times it has been an important traffic focal point, an intersection of the roads of Eastern and Western Europe. Its history lasted full 7000 years. The area around two great rivers, the Sava and the Danube has been inhabited as early as palaeolithic period. The hill overlooking the Sava and Danube confluence is called Kalemegdan and it’s Belgrade’s central park and my favourite place, just a short walking distance from my house. It’s also home to several galleries and museums, restaurants, kids’ playgrounds, sport courts and the Belgrade Zoo. From there you can easily reach Knez Mihailova street, the main walking street and center of Belgrade. As the epicenter of culture and history, Knez Mihailova was named one of the most beautiful pedestrian streets in Eastern

Europe. Skadarlija is Belgrade’s former bohemian quarter where writers, artists and actors gathered around the turn of the 20th century. Musicians would wander through the streets, performing their songs for restaurant and café patrons. It’s a tradition that continues today. Those visiting the many restaurants along this cobblestone street can feast on typical national cuisine, such as roštilj or grilled meats, while listening to bands play traditional music. Also, a few other places that you wouldn’t want to miss is the National Museum (newly reopened) Museum of Contemporary Art and “Nikola Tesla Museum.” 6. What would you absolutely love to see makers sew with Decadence? Everything! From small lifestyle and home projects to garments and quilts! I am always amazed by how much creativity is involved in certain projects, especially with fussy cutting and epp projects. 7. If you had to pick three prints from Decadence to wear forever, they would be? Graceful Bouquet Glaze, Regal Impressions Chinoise and Houndstooth XIV Onyx. 8. Five things you can’t live without? Speaking in non-materialistic terms, it would absolutely be my family and art, in general. In more materialistic terms-objects they would be: my art tools, art books, fruits and vegetables, sewing machine, and a computer.
