“...AND EVEN IF HE’S 13, HE’S STILL ENCHANTED WITH THESE MARVELOUS EXTINCT CREATURES.” Hi Nina! We are so excited about your new collection Esoterra. Can you tell us all about it? Hi! Thank you so much, I am always excited to see my collections printed on textiles. Like every last one created, it immediately becomes the new favourite. With Esoterra I tried to translate my love and vision of dinosaurs and their surrounding using organic shapes, textures, and colors, telling a story through a variety of prints, giving them a luscious and almost exotic look. During Quilt Market we hosted some fan based questions. Here’s what some people want to know about you: Have you ever experienced challenges because you “think out of the box” in your creativity? Absolutely! I always try to challenge myself with new themes and goals toward creating something that even goes a bit out of my comfort zone, thinking “out of the box”. I think it’s the best way to learn and grow, always maintaining our own style.

What is your biggest inspiration when creating your lines and how do you organize your ideas? Nature, travels and my kids are the biggest inspiration for my work. I try to collect and preserve some of my ideas by creating folders on my computer with some photos and sketches. There are always many drawings in different sketchbooks I have, that occasionally tend to jump in when appropriate.;) Can you tell us all about your artistic space/ studio? Is it organized, messy, what are your favorite things about it? We have a small house with beautiful garden in the countryside hills, called Fruska gora, near Belgrade, where I have a tiny studio where I paint, draw and where my printing press is. In our home at Belgrade, I don’t have a proper sewing room or the table that is all just mine (except the mini one that has my computer on), so any corner of our home can easily become my workspace: it can be a couch, the floor or a table. I love creating in the open air, so the porch of our countryside house is one of the most inspiring places for my creativity, being surrounded by the sounds of the nature and the happy voices of my kids playing nearby. Of course, I would love to have a possibility of having a bigger space where all my creative work could be gathered and accomplished, so I am dreaming about that option.

What made you want to explore the idea of dinosaurs on fabric? My son was always a huge fan of Dinosaurs and even if he’s 13, he’s still enchanted with these marvelous extinct creatures. I wanted to create a gender and age neutral collection that could appeal to him, to other kids, but also to all dino lovers. What are you excited to see being made with your exotic prints? Everything!!! From small lifestyle and home projects to garments and quilts!!! This collection is great for boys. What have you made your son with Esoterra? The Amber quilt and one pillow is embellishing his bed at the moment. I am making pajamas for us all in Esoterra, but would love to make him the Classic oxford button up shirt as Becca did for her son, that can be seen in the look book. We all know that leopard print is fabulous on anything! What advice do you have for makers who are afraid to use animal prints in their projects? I am so excited to see that leopard print is very trendy at the moment ( I created that print many years ago and finally the timing and the theme to use it was perfect ) and it’s almost like a new black….it really goes with everything, as blender or as a focal print.

The “Tropicalia Dark” rayon print from Esoterra is stunning! Do you see yourself making garments for yourself in this print? What would you make yourself? Thank you so much! Yes, absolutely - can’t wait to make me some flowy summer dresses, but for my girls as well. It’s one of my favourite prints and AGF rayon is my favourite substrate- it’s a perfect match :) If you could describe Esoterra in three words what would they be? Eccentric, wild and lush.
