Dream

HOLLAND Hi Sharon! Now that your Everlasting collection is out in stores, can you tell us about the inspiration behind it and how it turned into fabrics? Were they inspired by a love story? The story behind my new collection is definitely a love story inspired by my daughter, Anna. She reminds me, in so many ways, of all the joys of summer. A large part of this collection celebrates her June wedding, so you'll discover several of the fabrics aptly reference marriage, but you'll also find some special memories from my childhood woven in as well. For example, the print called Summer’s Dream plays tribute to my favorite bird—the swallow. I have sweet memories of watching the swallows follow and swoop around my father as he mowed the lawn on a summer’s evening.

What would you LOVE to see makers create with this collection?

If Everlasting had a soundtrack, what songs would be on it?

When I was designing this collection I envisioned garments. Sewing clothing is not really my area of expertise, so I’d really love to see someone make pretty dresses, fun tops, and cute kids clothing with these prints!

Any upcoming projects or collaborations we should know about? I’m planning an Everlasting blog tour, the last half of July. I’ve lined up some absolutely amazing makers and am so excited to see what beautiful Everlasting projects they’ll be creating!

vv What is a “day in the life” like? I'm a creature of habit and like my routine—boring as it may be! The sun is my alarm clock and my dog is my motivation. We are out the door first thing for a morning walk. Then after breakfast and coffee, it's time to tackle the not-so-fun administrative tasks like email, social media, paperwork, pattern writing, etc. The rest of the day is for sewing, designing, painting, embroidery, photography, or any other artistic pursuits. And because I'm a delicate flower, it should be noted that I'm much more productive on sunny days than gloomy ones. Then a break comes to walk the dog again in the afternoon, which is always a great opportunity to clear my head and work through anything I’m stuck on as well as a chance to get inspired by nature and recharged for the rest of the day. The evening is always spent with my number one fan—my wonderfully supportive husband! We typically unwind with something on TV, which is the perfect chance for me to practice my needlework. Then rest and repeat!

You design and make a lot of quilts. How does this process differ from designing fabrics? In some ways, the two types of art are the same process for me, because I like continuity and storytelling in my designs. A quilt is just another chance for me to add chapters to a collection’s story. I put great thought into the look and name given to a quilt pattern--just like when I’m naming the fabrics. As far as what quilt design to create, I consider what I’d like to make, what my followers would like to make/learn, and which designs would best show off the prints! How did you narrow down the prints for this collection? Was there a certain print that you started designing first that eventually lead to the others? Sometimes a collection starts from a print and sometimes from an inspiration image. This collection started from an inspiration photo I’d found on Pinterest. The colors and juxtaposition of femininity in a moody natural setting really spoke to me. There was a natural elegance to the image that reminded me of my daughter and her classic beauty. From there the first print I added to this collection was Bouquet Muse and, like a muse, that print inspired the rest of the collection.
