WILLARD

“I LOVE MEXICAN CULTURE, FOOD, AND FESTIVITIES.” 1.Fiesta Fun is a collection filled with Mexican flair enhanced by your signature modern touch! What inspired you about Mexican culture to create this fun collection? For years I have loved Mexican culture, food, and festivities. Because who doesn’t love a party?...with tacos and confetti? YES. I could eat tacos every day of the week. But what I’m attracted to most with Mexican design is their use of color. They have a wonderful way of mixing bold tones with pastels (and every shade in between) and making it work! With this collection you get many of those combinations---cobalt blue next to mint green. Or tangerine contrasted with peach. It’s a rainbow of fun. 2. The “Mexican Dress Morning” print reminds us of beautiful traditional embroidered Mexican garments. Since you’re a garment sewist, what modern pieces did you envision being made with this print? Yes, I love all the embroidered shirts and dresses that have had a resurgence again. It’s so fun to see moms and kids wearing them! My goal was to capture that beauty of an embroidered shirt, without having to do all the

work of embroidery. I like things that are simple, with big payoff. So the first thing I sewed with this fabric was a simple blouse for myself... and it worked out just as I had hoped! The floral design creates a faux yoke at the top. And it really looks awesome. 3. We believe that fabrics can tell lovely stories about a designer, places, and special moments. Is there a specific memory that came to your mind when you were designing this collection? The Citrus Sunrise is one of my favorites in the collection, because it was inspired by the three giant grapefruit trees my grandma had in her Arizona backyard when I was growing up. Every summer, after spending a month swimming in her pool, and jumping on her trampoline, and making lame music videos with her record player... she’d send us back home across the desert with a box of citrus in our family van. I’m pretty sure my mom was the only one that ate them. But I always loved that smell!...and the color. 4. Here at AGF one of our favorite things about Mexican culture is the food! What’s your favorite Mexican dish? Mexican food….Mmmm. My favorites are tacos, flautas, street corn, anything with melty cheese (is melty cheese a dish? It should be), and good old chips and salsa. I spent most of my life in Southern California (and now in Austin, Texas) so my palette is probably more Mexican-American and Tex-mex at times, but really I love it all. Especially when it’s spicy!...

“Paper” in spanish, and “Picado” means “Punched”. So these banners are made of cut-out patterns and intricate designs. This print is my homage to the folk art, without all the cutting! (I told you I like to keep things easy). There are four different Papel Picado colors, which is awesome because you can use them to make your own faux papel picado garland! Just cut out little rectangles and sew them together in a strand with bias tape. Done!

with a good Diet Coke to wash it down. 5. Have you ever been to Mexico? What’s your favorite place? Yes. Growing up in Santa Ana, CA (and later in Los Angeles) Mexican culture was everywhere. We’d often venture down to Tijiuana to buy trinkets. But as an adult I’ve traveled to the yucatan peninsula multiple times--my husband and I have visited the ruins at Chichen Itza and Tulum. And my favorite Mexican adventure was a trip I took with 5 friends to a small city called San Felipe. It was just the perfect mix of pleasant baja weather, blue ocean water, dancing under twinkle lights, and good company. 6. Fiesta Fun is not only great for quilting but also for creating bright party decorations. What are some of your tips for throwing a great party with handmade decor? These fabrics are easy to work with because they are bold and can stand on their own. If you’re hosting a party, throw a large swatch of fabric over your table, as a table topper (about a 45 x 45 inch square). Or you can make a simple table runner, or a stack of dinner napkins using a variety of prints. Of course I always love a festive garland! 7. This collection also brings to life the crafty essence of Mexican artistry with the print “Papel Picado”! Did you dabble in Mexican crafts when creating this collection? Oh, I love true Papel Picado banners. They are so unique and special! “Papel” means

8. Fiesta Fun is bold and bright and complements your previous collection, Boardwalk Delight perfectly. What kind of prints from both collections do you instantly see being paired together? Yes, combining collections together is a new thing for me and it’s kind of blowing my mind. Twice as many fabrics to use together! As designers we have colors and shades that we love to use---and mine are definitely yellow and orange. So I love how the Soda Straws print and Twinkle Lights from Boardwalk Delight fit right in with Fiesta Fun. 9. What has been the best part about being a fabric designer and what was the most exciting part about putting Fiesta Fun together? I’m still a young designer, so it’s exciting to explore what my style and aesthetic are. I definitely love color, and I definitely love FUN. Mostly I want to design things that are happy and joyful. 10. You’re known for your popular Youtube channel Made Everyday, you’re an author, designer, and a mom. What are some of your time management tips for sewists/quilters that would like to make more time for sewing? Oh man, I might need someone to share those tips with me! Haah. The best thing that I always recommend is to keep your sewing machine out all the time---even if the only space you have for it is a corner in your bedroom, or in a closet. If your machine is out and ready to go, you will want to sew! And in those spare 20 minutes between a baby’s nap time you can churn out a simple skirt or get started on a shirt for yourself!
