“I am Maureen. A stay-at-home mother of three, a lover of all things crafty and creative, and I make things by hand, at home in small town Pennsylvania.” Maureen Cracknell lives in small town Potter Country, Pennsylvania. She is a mother, wife, blogger, quilter, and lover of all things creative and handmade. Just a little over four years ago she started sewing and blogging at Maureen Cracknell Handmade; a simple, positive, and creative blog where she loves to share her projects, fabric stashes, sewing, and special family moments. Two years into blogging, she opened a Facebook page with intentions to share and connect with people who, like her, live with a passion to sew and quilt—most of who follow her blog, which has been supported and grown to over eighty thousand followers. These supporters continually give her encouragement and the opportunity to follow her path of creating and sharing. She’s been a proud member of several fabric manufacturer design teams throughout the years, including Art Gallery Fabric’s popular Fat Quarter Gang, and continues to work as an Independent Designer for Janome Sewing Machines. She is incredibly grateful for each of the opportunities that have led her where to where she is today!

Q &A

Maureen

CRACKNELL

“I AM MOST INSPIRED BY MY SURROUNDINGS” 1. Garden dreamer is all about beautiful blooms and botanical memories. What is your most vivid garden memory? My dear friend Leslie and I used to work together or just simply sit and enjoy her garden while our children played together. She had the most beautiful perennial flower garden in town, and I was so incredibly lucky to have met her. She taught me most of what I know about flowers -- the names of so many, which ones love the sun and which prefer the shade. Those few Summers that we spent watching our littles play amongst her flowers are some of my most favorite memories of all. 2. If you had to describe this collection in three words what would they be? Happy, Colorful, Dreamy. 3. The “Love Garden” panel consists of delicate flowers coming together to create a heart. What kind of projects do you envision with the panel? The first thing I had to do was back a quilt with

it! I’ve wanted to create a panel since I first started designing fabrics and I’m so excited this particular print is my first. I envision it being used for quilt backing, garments, table runners and tablecloths, even curtains would be amazing. I really want to cut away the inside of the heart, using a reverse applique technique to pair with a second Garden Dreamer print. I think I’ll try that idea out on a pillow soon! 4.Did the town you live in inspire you in any way? Are there specific flower fields or botanical gardens you visited while creating this collection? I am most inspired by my surroundings when it comes to my fabric designs, whether I’m outdoors taking in the beauty of the different seasons or indoors surrounded by the things I’ve collected and love so much. Much of this Garden Dreamer collection was inspired by and created to honor my friend Leslie who I mentioned above in my first question. She passed away from cancer several years ago, just a few months before I started sewing and she would be so thrilled by all of this. 5. Since this collection is a beautiful nature study of flowers, what’s your favorite flower? Isn’t there a saying, “I’ve never met a flower that I didn’t love”? This is so true as far as I’m concerned! I will share that my favorite flower bouquets will always be the ones my children pick for me. I hope that never ends!

6. On your blog “Maureen Cracknell Handmade” you shared sewing days with your daughter Haila and your niece Ceci. What projects have you made with them using Garden Dreamer? So far we have used the Moment in Time canvas paired with a quilting cotton and AGF Denim to make fun tote bags. They are both just beginners so I’m always looking for fun projects that take just about an hour or so to finish something both pretty and usable. They are both naturals and we have such a blast sewing together! Over the upcoming holiday we have plans to make Garden Dreamer pillowcases and we can’t wait! 7. You never cease to amaze us with all the projects you sew! What are your top three projects pending to be made with Garden Dreamer? The first thing I couldn’t wait to make was one of my herringbone quilts and I wasted no time whipping one up just as soon as my fabrics arrived! That was my #1 and now I’m looking forward to designing something new. This collection is so colorful and is such a great one to pair with so many Pure Element solids, I know that will inspire my next Garden Dreamer quilt. Of course I’ll have to make at least a dozen pillows, as usual! Oh, and I also recently redid our dining table and so a new runner will definitely be the next thing I make! 8. We love how you share everything you

make! Do you have any advice for makers who are self-conscious about their projects and are afraid to show them on social media? When I started sewing and immediately fell in love with it I made a simple goal -- make just one thing each day. My blog became a place for me to document those things not knowing what sharing the journey would turn into for me. I wanted to share what I was making so I alone could see all the ways I would improve, and boy have I ever! It’s so fun to look back at those early posts filled with really bad pillows, photographed in some dark corner of my home and see how far I’ve come. But that’s the least of it, along with showing your projects you are joining the most wonderful community of makers, filled with amazing, inspiring, encouraging people. It’s so much fun! 9. Since you adore quilts as much as we do, what’s your favorite quilt block? This past year I’ve been all about the half square triangles! When I’m not sure what quilt block I want to make I always start with HSTs and then once they’re made there’s endless possibilities of how to arrange them. Different collections and fabric themes inspire different layouts and color placement, but I’ve learned over the year that time spent making HSTs is always time well spent! 10. Garden Dreamer is your fourth collection, time really flies! How do you feel you have evolved as a designer since your first collection? Oh my, I am so much more comfortable with the entire process! When I first started designing I was very self-conscious and afraid, just as you mentioned new makers can sometimes be. I knew this is what I wanted to be doing, so I stuck with it even when I lacked confidence. I was also very lucky to have my mentor Pat Bravo and other designers and friends encouraging me along the way. Now, I could design fabrics all day. Already I can’t imagine not doing this and I feel so grateful everyday that I get to!
