FABRIC GRID by KATARINA ROCCELLA

“I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way - things I had no words for.” - Georgia O´Keeffe I was born and raised in Belgrade, Serbia, where I live with my husband, who is Italian, and our three kids that are the true inspiration for my work. I have a Masters degree from the Faculty of Applied Arts, and have started on my PhD thesis in Applied Arts and Design, through which I get to explore even more within the fields of painting, graphic and textile design. I was raised in an artistic family, so being “crafty” and creative is something that kept me company since my early childhood. My father is a painter, my mother is a ceramic pottery artist, and my sister is a production designer. Growing up in such environment, I often had opportunities to create and design and have continued throughout my life with an array of mediums like drawing, illustrating, calligraphy, graphic design, linoleum printing, photography, and more recently, sewing. I find inspiration everywhere and I love taking many pictures of things that move me, either by their shape, texture or color. When I took the role of a mother, I found I had very limited time to dedicate to art. So, being home often and with a need to create, I discovered the world of fabric. I began to sew after repairing my mother’s vintage sewing machine and soon upgraded to a Serger. The first results were encouraging, pushing me forward to try more complicated techniques and garment pieces. In a few short years, I was led to drawing and making my own patterns after much practice with making unique and fun pieces of clothes for my daughter. My pattern label, “Like Flowers and Butterflies”, was born in 2006. Lately I am lured by quilts and quilting. I love making quilt blocks and having made a few quilts on my own has given me the desire to try and experiment much more in this field. I blog about my creative adventures at Like Flowers and Butterflies.

“...DESK ORGANIZATION-
MY PAPERS, COLORS AND TOOLS HAVE TO BE HANDY.” 1. Hi Katarina! Congratulations on releasing your latest collection, “Grid!” We understand you’re currently working on your PhD thesis in art where a grid is your main focus, can you elaborate more on why you decided to focus on this topic, and how it turned into fabrics? It’s a very wide topic, exploring and bonding: traditional and modern, old and new, past and present, but basically and practically, I am taking the simple square (equivalent to contemporary pixel) and developing various combinations with it, through paintings and textile compositions - creating unique installations. Of course, there’s a long list of subtopics and historical groundwork, referrals and bonds with different aspects of life and art, but, in case someone might be interested in reading, I’ll elaborate a bit! The modern grid, as appeared in the works of artists of the twentieth century, owes
much to the history of textiles, especially in the field of tapestries, carpets and quilts. The grid and its contemporary manifestation, the matrix, continue to influence the work of artists, especially contemporary artists that weave or use concepts of weaving in their work. It’s quite possible that computer programming evolved from the art of hand weaving, the first known binary code being warp and weft. The formal advantage of a digital Jacquard loom is that because of the ability of the software to assist the weaver in realizing much more complicated designs it is possible to embed more irregular structures into the cloth as well as symbols and images the artist chooses to include. These choices can vary from super abstract or simple structures and shapes to actual reproductions of photographs in textile form. Although a weaving emerges from the grid, part of the way cloth rebels against the idea of a dependable structure is its inherent ephemeral quality. Ideas like the matrix and the grid are used to name not only the un-imaginable reaches of space but also the unseen interiors of our own bodies. The grid and the matrix continue to be viable starting points for contemporary artists to explore the possibilities these structures hold to imagine the visible and the invisible and the connection between body and mind.
In modern life, the grid is everywhere. Butterfly scales form the most beautiful and unique grid, the streets of cities create the most famous urban grid in the world, while we follow our digital media through small pixelated display network. 2. Speaking of art, are there any current artists that have been inspiring you lately? Yes, there are always many of them, but let’s mention just a few that can be related with this field: Chuck Close, Charis Tsevis, Frank Stella, Eva Hesse, Devorah Sperber and Chiharu Shiota. 3. Describe “Grid” in three words. Lines, space and movement. 4. When you’re about to sit down and start designing, do you have any certain rituals you have to do in order to begin your creative process? Desk organization- my papers, colors and tools have to be handy.
5. I’d love to see one of my designs turned into……. Ceramic tiles. 6. What’s your favorite print(s) from Grid? Is there a certain story behind it/them? I am so excited to be able to use my “Grid Positive” pattern as a design wall or board, so that it can be like a “skeleton” for creative interplay. There’s one of the designs“Circuit Rose” that was part of my portfolio, submitted to AGF back in 2012. I am so thrilled that it finally made its appearance in this collection! 7. My 2019 mantra is….? Work hard and enjoy more the simple life moments and blessings.
