“...AND WHEN I SWITCHED TO RED AFTER
MY MOM’S SUGGESTION, IT CHANGED THE WHOLE GAME AESTHETICALLY.” 1. Hi, Pat! We’re so happy to interview you for the release of another amazing collection! Can you tell us all about Indie Folk? Hi all! Thank you so much for this interview. Indie Folk is a very special collection to me. When I designed the first Indie group in 2011, I fell in love with the style as it became very popular for makers. After I did that first group I knew immediately that a sequel would come later in time. Last year I designed Indie Boheme. The more I dug into this style the more I wanted to create! So Indie Folk (the third installment) came in early summer of 2017. A designer always says that their last collection is the dearest, but for me all the Indie series are the most precious. I love these 3 groups!!
world the closer and more connected we are with everything. I’m the kind of designer that visually absorbs art and creativity 24/7. Since I’m very influenced by history and fashion, themes for new collections constantly pop up in front of my eyes. I swear that inspiration always gets me! All you need is to look at your surroundings, in the form of reading a book, looking at a magazine, watching a fashion runway, and I can keep going on and on…
3. Like many makers, we are swooning over the rich color palette in Indie Folk! What did you have in mind when you were creating the colorways for your collection? Thank you! I’m in love as well! This color palette is very special, because somehow it’s a departure from colors that I used to incorporate in the past, and for that I was influenced by a very special person in my life, my mom. I designed this collection in the middle of having to deal with her being diagnosed with a terminal cancer so I spent a lot of time in her bedroom with my computer. She kept telling me how pretty the designs would be if I could make them with lots of red, and she was right! Red is not a color that I use very of2. Recently we hosted fan based questions on ten but after seeing the designs recolored, it the AGF facebook and one recurring question is becoming more of a friend to me! She died fans had for you is: Where do you get your in9 weeks ago. I think subconsciously I wanted spiration to continuously have fresh ideas? to dedicate this collection to her, so I used It’s very difficult not to get inspired with a world that has become very creative and colorful in many of the colors she asked for the designs. I don’t regret that decision at all, it’s a true the last years! There’s so much to see and to testament to her memory! tell. The more we are immersed into an online
4. With every collection you design, you’re known for your intricate prints. What is your favorite print from Indie Folk? My favorite design is Khokhloma Burgundia, because I originally colored it in green and when I switched to red after my mom’s suggestion, it changed the whole game aesthetically. 5. Which print was the most difficult to design? Also Khokhloma, it took me almost a month to complete! It has a triple layer of leaves and flowers in different colors to create more dimension. I was full time on it until all the artwork was perfectly positioned and I achieved the exact repeat I wanted. 6. Throughout your Indie trilogy the essence of boho style is present in a variety of ways. What kind of boho vibes did you focus on with Indie Folk? The essence of an elegant boho home, where I want to live these days. A home very rich in colors. Warm, inviting and livable. 7. With many years of experience in fabric design, how do you think your style has evolved over the years? It really has evolved for sure! Maybe not in the intricacy of my designs but in the themes. A more “bohemian” side of me has been showing up lately, with a deeper love of craftsmanship and everything “handmade” and “homemade” and more organic. I enjoy working on those themes more than ever!
8. Do you have any advice for makers who are afraid to sew with bold colors and prints? Where do you think they should start? That’s a great question! People usually think that using many bold and deep colors together is a receipt for failure and they couldn’t be more wrong! Deep colors are great when used together because they make a great statement. If you add neutrals in the mix, it turns to be the perfect balance, so don’t forget to throw in linen, khaki, soft beige, navy and black. They go perfectly with the bold mix! 9. Can you tell us a little bit about your “Folklore” free quilt pattern available in the lookbook? I have many large scale prints in this collection, so I wanted the free quilt pattern to be simple for the fabrics to speak by themselves. Makers can also see that I didn’t use any solids in the design this time, because I used “Flecks Indigo” as a simple fabric, to add texture without color. It works perfectly as a background fabric. I hope makers enjoy this quilt pattern because is super easy to make! 10. If you could describe Indie Folk in three words what would they be? Intense, livable and happy! Hope you love it as much as I do!!
