BRAVO

“AN OLD PRINT CAN BE MODERN IF YOU GIVE IT A TWIST.” 1. Hi, Pat! We must admit that your vibrant personality and incredible talent never ceases to amaze us! Can you tell us a little about yourself and about your favorite things? Hi! Thank you for this interview :) I’m Pat Bravo, a creative at heart and lover of all things beautiful. I’ve been designing fabrics for AGF since it was established in 2004. I was born in Argentina and have sewn since I was 9 years old. My mother is to a great extent responsible for that, since she always encouraged me to do all kinds of crafts. I went to a primary school specialized in home economics and there I learned crochet, needlepoint etc. Ruffles always fascinated me, and my mom sat down next to me while I was doing long strips of ruffles in the sewing machine for my dolls’ dresses. At the age of 13 I did a seamstress course at a fashion academy in Buenos Aires. Although it is true that I like sewing in general, home décor sewing was something which I felt much affinity with. I also took some painting classes with emphasis on color during a short period of time. I don’t have a formal background in quilting or design but this is what I call to be self-educated, I guess? From all the things I love, the one I can say is number one is to read. I’m a history junkie and that has been my biggest source of inspiration for

my collections; so my reads mostly go around history or fashion. I also love watching documentaries and to travel to inspiring places to dream and to relax. 2. You’ve designed over 30 collections for AGF and continue to surprise us with every new collection you design! Where do you find constant inspiration for your unique designs and ideas? It is so interesting because I think inspiration always finds me! Inspiration come from the least expected things: watching a movie or a documentary, reading a book or a magazine, or surfing the web for a new fashion trend. The desire of expressing myself with fabrics through a different point of view: History and Fashion. It made me discover a niche in the world of fabrics that I like to call “contemporary elegant”. People usually relate the term “history” with something “old”; for me it is completely the opposite! An old print can be modern if you give it a modern twist. All historical periods allow me to do exactly that. The result is a “modern and young” fabric but that also has “character, design and elegance”. Inspiration never ends and I like to call it my best friend! 3. Do you have any advice for creatives that want to venture into fabric design but don’t know where to start? I love to see new artistic talent emerging everyday and my advice would be to be true to themselves finding their own style and not try to emulate other artists. Your own style would be unique to you and people will immediately notice that and embrace it. Always

dream BIG and think that extraordinary things can happen to all of us! Having a complete and visually pretty portfolio is a must do for submitting to fabric companies or if you want to license your artwork to other companies in general. Also, I think a detailed plan to make your brand visible is very important. 4. We’re all excited about the release of Indie Boheme! We’re loving the bright pinks and deep colors! What was the most exciting part about designing this collection? Ohh, thank you for the love of pink! I always say that “Life is pink and pink is life”, and for those who know my former collections, pink is present on each and every one of them! Indie Boheme is the sequence to my first Indie collection released in 2011. It was very well received by the quilting community and AGF reprinted it several times. After it sold out, quilters and sewists asked me to reprint it again, and in the back of my mind I’ve always kept the idea of designing another Indie collection, a new one. Bohemian style has always been very dear for me, so I went for it! I am so so happy to introduce this collection to the quilting & sewing community and hope they like it as much as my original Indie line. Indie Boheme is my interpretation of a very happy place where flowers are abundant, birds sing all day and ethnic decorative elements embellish our surroundings. It is very vibrant, with a mix of pastel and deep colors and eclectic designs from romantic florals, to birds, thin lines, crosses and plaids and filled with faraway decorative elements. My favorite part was to combine all these designs to be part of one bohemian story. 5. What are some projects you would love to see with this collection? Boho style goes with everything! I am curious to see how quilters as well as garment sewists and accessories’ makers will use my prints. I believe this collection will appeal to all of them. It is great for children sewing as well because it has many happy designs included. Also I envision lots of home decor projects with this collection, like pillows, table runners, slip covers, comfy throws and scrappy small area rugs. I find the designs perfect for all things

bohemian! 6. Are there any sewing techniques/styles that you’re currently obsessed with that you would love to try with Indie Boheme? I’m currently hosting the EPP Party with Mister Domestic on Instagram where we are sewing along different blocks in English paper piecing. I’m trying epp with this line and love how it looks. I’m truly obsessed! I will like to try it in traditional applique in the future since I think Indie Boheme is perfect for this technique! 7. What prints from this collection do you think will challenge makers to think outside the box? The main print that comes in this line is sure to challenge more than one sewist! It is called Bohemian Patchwork and is a composed print that has 12 designs inside. It looks like a giant patchwork made of flowers, stripes and bohemian decorative elements that can be used in so many ways! Whole, fussy cutting, in stripes, foundation paper piecing, you name it! I was thinking of bohemian folks that like to use patchwork in their home decoration so I thought a print like that would be wonderful to use in their sewing projects. 8. Throughout your sewing journey we’re sure you’ve experienced many things. What’s one of your most memorable sewing experiences? I can say that I have had many, but the most important for me has been seeing my fabric designs being used by other sewists. It feeds my soul and my heart every single day and inspires me to design more fabrics for many years to come. 9. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the term Boheme, it represents a laid back lifestyle and an interest in art and literature. Pat, would you consider yourself a modern day bohemian? I sure am a bohemian at heart! I like to incorporate art, literature and music from many cultures and distant places, and fuse them in one style that I find uniquely my own.
