I was born and raised in Chicago, but decided to move to Scottsdale, Arizona with my two teenage daughters: Anna and Emily, and my husband Kevin to stay closer to my family. I have been passionate about design for as long as I can remember. As a child, my mother would paint and craft, so it was only a natural progression that I would inherit her love of crafting. I began crafting and creating jewelry, but when I first learned to sew I knew I had found my passion. I was hooked on it. That obsession is what inspired my own handmade handbag business and my first book: Inspired to Sew. My style is rather eclectic, and has grown over the years into what you see today. While I love vintage and soft designs, I am constantly drawn to color and bold prints which are very modern, as well as mixing the two for surprising combinations. I don’t hold back when it comes to mixing fabric prints and colors. The world around me inspires me…. I look at photos and imagine faraway pla-ces. I see a color and that inspires a whole collection. I am a color junkie. It was my love for fabric that got me back into graphic design and specifically textile design. In 2009, I created my first fabric line, Full Bloom. Since then, additional lines proceeded. Due to their popularity, they were featured in magazines including Accessories, Romantic Homes, Quilts and More, Studios, Belle Armoire, and many more.

“...I KNEW I WANTED A PINEAPPLE BLOCK, BUT THEN BLAIR HIT IT OUT OF THE PARK.” 1. Hey, Bari! It’s great to have you back for another interview! Can you tell us all about your new collection Indigo & Aster? Indigo and Aster’s main inspiration was animals. I had been painting the animal portraits for the past 2 years or so, and they simply had to make their way onto fabric. So they were the starting place for this line. From there the other prints were created to enhance that theme. 2. Some time ago, you created tons of cute animal paintings for your hashtag #100daysofbirdsandcritters on instagram. How did you decide that you wanted these cute paintings on fabric? So many of my followers requested them that I had to find a way to put them on fabric. I hadn’t envisioned it at first. But once I started getting requests, I decided to put some thought into it.
3. What do you imagine people making with your critters from the “Radiant Menagerie panel”? I imagine bunting, crib bumpers, dresses and skirts, soft children’s books, pillows, quilts. They’re so fun to just cut out and feature one by one or all in a row. One thing I’m dying to see is a little play tablecloth for tea parties! 4. Everyone knows that you’re a huge advocate for mixing leopard print with everything! What’s your advice to makers that aren’t sure how to use this stylish print? Experiment. Mixing and matching takes practice if it’s not your first instinct. Mix smaller prints with larger prints and play with the contrast. Take a color from one print and mix it with a contrasting print of a different scale. It’s all about the contrast and then similarities that bring collections together. 5. We recently saw that Jane Fonda wore one of your prints in the hit Netflix series, Grace and Frankie. Congrats! What prints from Indigo & Aster would you love to see Jane wearing in the next episodes? The main floral and of course the leopard print! 6. Now, let’s talk quilts! Can you tell us all about the “Florasion” free quilt pattern? It’s adorable! My friend Blair from Wise Craft designed the quilt. I knew I wanted a pineapple block, but then Blair hit it out of the park.
I LOVE this design! I wanted each of the animals featured. I think it’s going to be a great quilt for kids!
The easiest was the scallop print. That one I did on paper in watercolor first and had a very clear idea of what it should look like.
7. You recently hosted an amazing sew along with Melanie from Southern Charm Quilts. What other fun events do you have in mind to inspire makers to mix and match Indigo & Aster with your other collections? I’m thinking of doing a contest with the animal panel… I’d love to see what you all come up with.
10. Now, for the toughest question! If you had to choose your top 3 favorite prints from Indigo & Aster and sew with them for the rest of your life, which ones would they be and why? The main floral with the black background, the traditionally colored leopard print and the pink scallop because I feel like these can be mixed and matched over and over and I’d never tire of them.
8. Everyone knows you’re a huge fan of maximalist home decor! How have you incorporated Indigo & Aster in your home? I’ve created a lot of pillows with the floral and obviously mixed with the leopard print. I recently redecorated our guest room with it. 9. This collection is filled with prints in a variety of styles and scales. What was the most challenging print to make and which one was the easiest? The animal panel was definitely the hardest. I had to have a chart for each of the colors so that I could reduce the colors on each in a separate document then put them all together. It was maddening to figure out. And then when I thought it was all done it came to my attention that for the scale of the print I needed to eliminate 4 colors! I had to start all over again. Also, I think I have about 20 versions of the layout of the design.
