Passionate persistence and an inďŹ nite love for design

have led Pat Bravo to design

forty collections

over the past fourteen years. Legendary tells the story of her best-selling designs,

and brings them together harmoniously

through what is Pat’s signature:

AN EXQUISITE USE OF COLOR.

“I see the world for its beauty and majesty. The intricate, the ornate, the royal… All of this catches my eye. You can say I have soulful eyes.”

My passion for sewing materialized at the age of 9, when I sat down at my mother’s sewing machine for the first time. At the age of 13, I joined a sewing school in my native Buenos Aires, learning everything about fabrics, dressmaking, and patterns. For many years I lived in this wonderful world, until it was time to go to college. I decided to study law and sew on the side, but soon realized that this was not my dream. I dropped out and took three years of painting classes and around this time, I met the love of my life, Walter Bravo. Thirty-three years later, we’re still married and have a beautiful son together. He is my friend, my confidant, my everything… and my partner in our company, Art Gallery Fabrics. In 1989, we moved to the United States and I became pregnant with my son, Alex. My life changed radically after the move. Everything was completely new for me: the people, the culture, the food, the city. It was such an intense period of adaptation, that for a good amount of time, I had no energy to do the things that I loved and cherished. That all changed when Walter got me my first sewing machine! With that, I immediately came back to life! I fell in love with quilting, sewing triangles and squares together, eventually teaching myself everything that could be achieved using traditional quilting techniques. Throughout the years, my taste started evolving and I began to cross the bridge towards art quilts. First, I started with landscapes and with time my style became more abstract. I had a hard time finding color variations in batiks and that’s when I decided to paint my own fabrics. I began to see that quilters loved them, and not too long after that, Walter and I founded Art Gallery Fabrics. I am convinced that everybody is born to do something in life. This is what I was born to do and I am sure that this is what I will do for the rest of my life.

Q &A

Pat

BRAVO

“...AND MY EXCITEMENT AND PASSION TO CREATE THEM HAS NOT DIMINISHED, BUT INCREASED.”

1. Hi Pat! Congratulations on releasing your 40th collection, “Legendary!” How does it feel to achieve this amazing milestone?! It feels awesome! It’s a unique feeling, an achievement I never imagined, even in my wildest dreams. I remember several years ago, when I started painting fabrics by hand, the emotion I felt of being able to create a new concept in fabrics with completely new colors for the market that thousands of quilters started to use. Then I printed them with different motives, and I saw how much they liked them. When I had the chance to create my first commercial line in bolts, I thought I was touching the sky with my hands! It has been 14 years and 40 collections, and my excitement and passion to create them has not diminished, but increased. I feel very proud! LEGENDARY celebrates this achievement with a special group of 24 fabrics taken from my most famous designs. I guess my fans out there will

be very happy to see many of these designs, reprinted! 2. Now that you’ve created so many fabric lines over the years, what’s the biggest takeaway when it comes to creating a fabric collection? That’s a very good question! Many times people ask me how I find inspiration after having created all these collections, and the inspiration is a little bug that never stops revolving on top of my head; it never goes away! I always find a new story to tell, an idea that transforms into designs. Mostly, my source of inspiration has been fashion, especially in the last 4 or 5 years, even more so. Fashion allows you to constantly change, to evolve. As a designer, I feel that I have evolved over the years; little by little I have been shifting to a more rustic style, the “arts and crafts movement” which has to do more with a “handmade look” that is so dear to me. The colors have also changed; they are much more saturated now. That is why people appreciate that my collections are versatile and can be used for accessories, home decor, apparel and lots of quilting! 3. Describe “Legendary” in three words. Descriptive of my true self as a designer, avant-garde in color, memorable for the period of my life which it was created.

4. I’d love to see one of my designs turned into… Oh my God… can I say…. EVERYTHING? These designs are perfect for rich home decor and saturated/boho quilting; dreamy hippie apparel and the most artsy bags and pouches, kind of… “I’m free to create my own dreams”. If you want to go for modern quilting, you can mix them up with my upcoming new line of quilting blenders MATCHMADE (available in January 2019), with colors specially coordinated to match my LEGENDARY line. 6. If you only could wear three prints from “Legendary,” which ones would they be and why? Well, this question is so difficult to answer because ALL the designs are so precious to me and mainly because they represent a heartfelt period of my life. It’s hard, but if I have to chose three they would be WONDERLUST from my original INDIE; BRIT BOUTIQUE from CARNABY STREET and FEMME METALE from ROCK’N ROMANCE. 7. Now that you’ve created forty collections, what can we expect next!? I’m working on perhaps the most important collection of my life. It’s dedicated to the memory of my mom, and it will bear her name. It has all the designs she adored

through the years. I’m so excited to create a collection she would be proud of! I’m putting my heart and soul on these designs. I hope people will love it as much as I do. 8. What’s currently on your playlist? I’m all into the 80’s, that’s why disco dance! ABC, Donna Summer, Electric Light Orchestra, Kool & The Gang, Yaz, Chic and many others continue to bring happiness to my life. In addition, since I was born in a latin american country, the idol of all times of latin music Luis Miguel is the artist I love the most. He is the latin Frank Sinatra. This is all I hear!
