“I see the world for its beauty and majesty. The intricate, the ornate, the royal… All of this catches my eye. You can say I have soulful eyes.”

My passion for sewing materialized at the age of 9, when I sat down at my mother’s sewing machine for the first time. At the age of 13, I joined a sewing school in my native Buenos Aires, learning everything about fabrics, dressmaking, and patterns. For many years I lived in this wonderful world, until it was time to go to college. I decided to study law and sew on the side, but soon realized that this was not my dream. I dropped out and took three years of painting classes and around this time, I met the love of my life, Walter Bravo. Twenty-seven years later, we’re still married and have a beautiful son together. He is my friend, my confidant, my everything… and my partner in our company, Art Gallery Fabrics. In 1989, we moved to the United States and I became pregnant with my son, Alex. My life changed radically after the move. Everything was completely new for me: the people, the culture, the food, the city. It was such an intense period of adaption, that for a good amount of time, I had no energy to do the things that I loved and cherished. That all changed when Walter got me my first sewing machine! With that, I immediately came back to life! I fell in love with quilting, sewing triangles and squares together, eventually teaching myself everything that could be achieved using traditional quilting techniques. Throughout the years, my taste started evolving and I began to cross the bridge towards art quilts. First, I started with landscapes and with time my style became more abstract. I had a hard time finding color variations in batiks and that’s when I decided to paint my own fabrics. I began to see that quilters loved them, and not too long after that, Walter and I founded Art Gallery Fabrics. I am convinced that everybody is born to do something in life. This is what I was born to do and I am sure that this is what I will do for the rest of my life.

Q &A

Pat BRAVO “...THAT FEELING OF “TOMORROW,

I ALWAYS HAVE THE CHANCE TO MAKE MORE AND BETTER THAN TODAY” THRILLS ME!” 1. Hi Pat! Congratulations on releasing your latest collection, “Matchmade!” We understand the whole idea of creating this collection was to coordinate with your existing collections. Can you elaborate more on how you felt the need to create these fabrics? Hi! I am super excited to introduce my latest collection “MATCHMADE” to all of you! I hope you don’t feel surprised because these kind of lines are not what I normally do, but I felt it was necessary! Always my style has been very intricate, fashion, ornate and edgy, and when quilters look for simple fabrics to combine with my main collections for a quilt, they can go for the extensive line of “Elements” that AGF has, but I also wanted to offer something different. This line is unique because it combines prints with a lot of negative space, small scale, and colors that perfectly match with all my previous lines. For me, it’s really important that quilters can have that kind of fabric look next to

my main lines. I hope everyone likes it! On the other side, they can use them by themselves as a “solid but not very solid” fabrics to create entire quilts and many other projects. 2. How did you narrow down the colors chosen for this collection? Colors were really easy! This time, I wanted them especially to match my main collections, so I went on a hunt to search which colors I’ve used the most in the last few collections. Pink, blue, mustard and yellow were the emerging main colors I used, and then I went on creating designs based on those four color groups in different intensity levels to help quilters have enough contrast options. They have many lights, mediums, and darks for all kind of project demands. 3. Describe “Matchmade” in three words. “Multifaceted” would be a great definition, but also “colorful” and “timeless”, because they are fabrics to use overtime to help create different projects. 4. When you’re about to sit down and start designing, do you have any certain rituals you have to do in order to begin your creative process? Candles are a must, of course! Peony or rose are my favorites! When I design, I prefer music over a movie because movies distract me. My desk is usually a mess, I have

color cards, inspirational images, and magazines all over the place, notepads (because I take a lot of notes), and a glass of Coke Zero that has to be present at all times. Sometimes, coffee or tea. I’m a dreamer and I dream more when I have a rich and stimulating working environment around me. 5. Talking about design, after you finish a collection do you take some time to reset? Which places would you choose to go on vacation? I normally don’t take days off after finishing each collection, but I enjoy so much going on vacations! The problem is that I never have time, haha! When I can find some days, my favorite places to go are a beach/ tropical destination to quiet my mind or to a European city if I’m looking for inspiration. 6. What would you love to see makers create with Matchmade? Everything! I have to admit that my intention was to help makers have great designs for all kind of quilting projects; but clothing, home decor, and accessories are also an option. 7. Besides patchwork, is there another trend that you would love to see emerge in 2019? No, patchwork for me is a trend that has always been and will continue to be for a long time. It’s the historical memory that we have of it what makes it never go out of style because we relate it to all pleasant moments

and sensations: the warmth of the home, family, the joy of giving a gift made by us. We are in a period of history where we seek the truth, the simple, the natural and where we stop valuing the wild consumerism and the appreciation of everything made by hand takes force. What better than a quilt as an example! 8. What’s your mantra for this year? Mantras are great! They are eye openers for our lives. There’s this quote written by F. Scott Fitzgerald that I will always refer to for life: “It’s never too late to become who you want to be. I hope you live a life that you’re proud of, and if you find that you’re not, I hope you have the strength to start over.” It’s so inspirational to me! I am in a period of my life where I prioritize how proud I am of the good things I do each day. Life needs to be worthy for me. I am a big believer of “lost causes” and “I can change the world” constant state of mind. That feeling of “tomorrow, I always have the chance to make more and better than today” thrills me!
