“I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way - things I had no words for.” - Georgia O´Keeffe I was born and raised in Belgrade, Serbia, where I live with my husband, who is Italian, and our three kids that are the true inspiration for my work. I have a Masters degree from the Faculty of Applied Arts, and have started on my PhD thesis in Applied Arts and Design, through which I get to explore even more within the fields of painting, graphic and textile design. I was raised in an artistic family, so being “crafty” and creative is something that kept me company since my early childhood. My father is a painter, my mother is a ceramic pottery artist, and my sister is a production designer. Growing up in such environment, I often had opportunities to create and design and have continued throughout my life with an array of mediums like drawing, illustrating, calligraphy, graphic design, linoleum printing, photography, and more recently, sewing. I find inspiration everywhere and I love taking many pictures of things that move me, either by their shape, texture or color. When I took the role of a mother, I found I had very limited time to dedicate to art. So, being home often and with a need to create, I discovered the world of fabric. I began to sew after repairing my mother’s vintage sewing machine and soon upgraded to a Serger. The first results were encouraging, pushing me forward to try more complicated techniques and garment pieces. In a few short years, I was led to drawing and making my own patterns after much practice with making unique and fun pieces of clothes for my daughter. My pattern label, “Like Flowers and Butterflies”, was born in 2006. Lately I am lured by quilts and quilting. I love making quilt blocks and having made a few quilts on my own has given me the desire to try and experiment much more in this field. I blog about my creative adventures at Like Flowers and Butterflies.

“...I WANTED THE ELEMENTS THAT I GATHERED TOGETHER TO BE ABLE TO TELL A STORY” 1. Hi, Katarina! It’s great to have you back for another collection release! Can you tell us all about your new collection Mediterraneo? Hi all! It’s always a pleasure being back to talk about new fabric collection release. Mediterraneo collection is inspired with childhood memories and summers spent in some places along the Mediterranean coast. With this collection I wanted to take you with me to the beautiful journey spiced up with typical Mediterranean fruits, flowers and little animal creatures, all colored with juicy, vibrant and saturated colors that reminds me of the summertime. 2. From the beautiful exotic flowers to the fresh fruit print, this collection is irresistible for spring and summer sewing! What did you envision being made when you were designing this collection? I can’t agree more! I already made several outfits for my older daughter that just came back home from visiting some of the most beautiful places of Mediterranean coast, like Barcelona, Nice, Positano, Sorrento and Capri island. So it was the perfect opportunity even to show off some creations/fabrics with amazing Mediterranean backdrop. You may see some pics
she snapped with help of her friends in the lookbook. I especially enjoyed making her the jumpsuit with Frutteria rayon, as it features amazing drape and enables very easy sewing (just be sure to have new, sharp needle!). I think that this collection offers wide selection of prints that could be used for all kind of creations, from quilts to clothes, and I am always so inspired and amazed by looking at the beautiful projects created by many talented makers that we’re happy to feature in this lookbook. 3. There are so many inspiring countries and cultures along the Mediterranean coast. How did you narrow down what elements from this beautiful region to display in your collection? Absolutely! It’s incredible that there are around 20 different countries surrounding the sea and it wasn’t easy to select just a few elements to play with, but I was concentrated on the things that would be irreplaceable for me when thinking about this area and the places I visited. I wanted the elements that I gathered together to be able to tell a story that would inspire others and share my vision and creativity. 4. What are some countries in the Mediterranean that you have visited and what do you love about them? I’ve visited approx. half of the countries, but there are 3 countries that play the most important role for my inspiration and my life and those are: Italy, Greece, and Croatia and I visit them regularly. The Mediterranean coast has some of the most beautiful cities, land-
scapes and beaches, while also Mediterranean food and dishes are famous in the whole world. 5. For the makers out there looking to take a trip to the Mediterranean, what are some must-see places that you recommend? I’ve tried to “mark” some of the most recognizable monuments (cities) along the coast on the “Cartographe” print with its worldwide famous symbols-amenities. But I think that all of the countries, islands, and little towns have their own unique charm and views, with irresistible mediterranean vibe, that it would be almost unfair to name just a few. 6. Just imagining all of these beautiful places has us thinking of your detailed “Cartographe” map print! What was this design process behind this unique and intricate print? When bringing together the inspiration for the collection, I was looking to find a print that would somehow gather the inspiration and all the other prints together, and vintage map of Mediterranean Sea from XIX century, looked like a great starting point for further sketching, scanning and designing. I thought that it would be important having a print in the collection that would point out the fact that there were some of the most ancient civilisations located around the Mediterranean shores, and theirs cultures and lifestyle was greatly influenced by their proximity to the sea. 7. Now, let’s talk about the “Soleil” free quilt pattern! It’s a beautiful kaleidoscope of color! What did you have in mind when you were designing it?
Thank you so much! I really like how the quilt design is beginner friendly and the explosion of colors somehow reminded me of the sunrise and sunset, so hence the name -”Soleil” which means Sun in French. 8. We are totally swooning over the “Frutteria Bleu” rayon! Do you plan on sewing anything for you and your daughters with it? Like I already mentioned before, yes and the jumpsuit was actually it was the first thing I made from this collection. I can’t wait to get some more of it, so that even other family members can enjoy something made with that print and that beautiful AGF substrate!!! 9. With Mediterraneo being your 12th collection with AGF, how do you constantly find ways of reinventing yourself as a designer? It sounds incredible to realize that, but I like to challenge myself with different kinds of themes and color stories, so I can never get bored of it! There are so many ways of being inspired and I like trying myself in different mediums, exploring and always learning something new! 10. If you had to sew with only three prints from Mediterraneo for the rest of your life, which ones would they be and why? It’s a tricky question and hard to choose, but I would choose: Lantana, Cartographe and Bougainvillush. Lantana and Bougainvillush because they are very typical and lavish Mediterranean florals and Cartographe, because it’s very unique print and would work well with almost anything as neutral print or/and blender.
