3. For your whimsical “Flora and Fauna” print, how did you narrow down the specific types of flora and fauna to be highlighted in this fabric? I walk my dog twice a day, 365 days a year. When you walk you get to fully appreciate what nature has to offer. The plants and critters seen in that modern spin on a toile print are all flora and fauna I’ve seen during my walks. 4. Name three words that sum up this collection. Without hesitation they would be: natural, romantic, and lighthearted.

“...INSPIRATION MOSTLY DERIVES FROM THE NATURAL WORLD AROUND AND MY OHIO HOME.”

1. Hi Sharon! Congratulations on releasing your sixth fabric collection, Signature! What was the most exciting part about creating this collection? Most challenging? Thank you! I find designing any fabric line exciting, but going wild with florals definitely made for the most fun I’ve ever had creating a collection. Narrowing down the selection of prints was the most challenging part, but thanks to Pat Bravo’s keen eye, we have 14 knockout prints that play harmoniously together. 2. We understand you drew a lot of inspiration from the natural world. Since you were born and raised in Iowa, did a lot of this inspiration come from your home state? My life has always revolved around being outdoors, gardening, and a deep love for animals. My husband and I have uprooted and moved around the Midwest several times (living in Iowa, Illinois, and now Ohio) and it’s fun to commune with the different types of vegetation and wildlife found in each area. For Signature inspiration mostly derives from the natural world around and my Ohio home.

5. Since you’re also a photographer, does your photography often come into play when designing a fabric collection, or do you keep these separate from one another? Photography is just as important a design tool to me as a pencil or computer. I use my camera throughout my creative process. The Traveler print, for example, came to life because of a photograph I took on a trip to New York. While walking in the rain, we passed by a worn sidewalk with dimples in it. I loved the man-made yet random pattern I could see below my feet. I made everyone stop so I could snap some pictures. I didn’t know it at the time but this would later find its way into my Signature collection. That’s one way I use photography. Another stems from my love of styled shoots. When I design a print I’m already seeing (in my mind) the possible end uses for that print and the ways in which I want to photograph projects using that print. 6. What are you most excited to see makers create with Signature? Of course, you know I love quilts. That’s a given. The biggest reward for any surface designer though is to see their prints in use. Projects created from the heart are especially dear to me because those makers chose to include my print in their special project. That’s always exciting! 7. If you had to pick a print from Signature to wear forever, which one would it be and why? I especially adore the Extempore Gala prints and color way. It’s currently the backdrop to my profile picture and I have already made myself a kimono with the rayon. The colors and hand-drawn impromptu florals suit my personality to a tee.
