“...HAUNTED, UNLUCKY IN LOVE,
AND LACKING SOCIAL GRACES BUT HE WAS A GENIUS AND HAD A GIFT LIKE NO OTHER IN MUSIC.” 1. Hi Amy! Congratulations on releasing your new collection, “Sonata!” We understand you drew a lot of inspiration from the Classical composer “Ludwig van Beethoven,” can you tell us how this turned into fabrics? I’ve been in-love with Beethoven’s music since we celebrated his birthday in music class in elementary school. I was totally smitten with the music then, but as I’ve gotten older my love and fascination for the man, Beethoven, has only increased. He was a romantic figure to be sure- haunted, unlucky in love, and lacking social graces - but he was a genius and had a gift like no other in music. 2. Speaking of music, do you play any musical instruments? I’m finally learning to play piano. Growing up my family loved music. We always had music playing and we always went to musicals, so naturally I was always singing. I sing
in the choir at my church and spend lots of time going over my notes while I sew and study. I’m an alto, which is tough because we don’t usually get to sing the melody but when you mix the altos, sopranos, tenors and basses together, it’s just gorgeous! 3. Describe “Sonata” in three words. Bold. Gentle. Joyful. 4. What is your process when creating a new collection? I get to choose a new theme or idea for each collection, and that’s the easy part because my interests are simple. I’ve explored my love of books, childhood, music, places like Charleston, and well, I can’t tell you my next yet! But once an idea is fixed, it’s easy to convert that broad theme into ideas based on design elements that make a well rounded group of fabrics. Like ink splatters caused by Beethoven’s quill on a piece of paper, or flowers thrown into the air during an ovation after a concert, or the window boxes Beethoven might have walked by on a street in Vienna. I allow a lot of latitude in my associations. I mean, I know that the average person might think, “ Hey, why so many flowers in a Beethoven inspired collection when he is mostly thought to have been a miserable, grumpy composer who never lived a great love story?” But if you know about Beethoven’s
‘Immortal Beloved’ (whose identity has never been discovered), you can attribute some secret romantic longings and I, in my own way, have decided that the Immortal Beloved was Josephine because that’s what I named one of the prints. 5. I’d love to see one of my designs turned into… Wallpaper. When I drew the elements for “Eidelweis” and arranged them in a casually symmetrical pattern, I was inspired by a picture of wallpaper I’d seen on Instagram. When I look at that print enlarged on my computer screen it looks like the perfect wallpaper for a little girl’s room. 6. If you only could wear three prints from “Sonata,” which ones would they be and why? I absolutely have been dreaming of a dress in “Vienna” (the window boxes) since I drew it. The print is playful, modern, and sweet and I absolutely must have a dress even if I have to pay someone to make it for me! Of course, I love love love the rayon “Pastoral” print and I’ve already made myself an Ogden camisole out of it. I do see a long flowy skirt in it, as well. And the third print I’d want to wear? Probably “Floral No. 9” because it comes in knit and will make fun leggings! 7. Besides Beethoven, what else has been inspiring you lately? Lately, I’m inspired by the deep bold colors
that I’ve been seeing on velvet in home deco. I’m completely obsessed with those jewel tones used as pops of color in an otherwise tranquil setting or color scheme. Because I’m decorating a house that’s new to me, I’m constantly looking at interior design pics (like wallpapers, tapestries, floor and wall tiles, and rug) and this might have a play in my next collection. But maybe not. We’ll see ;) 8. What’s currently on your playlist? Right now, I’m kind of addicted to “Girls Like You” by Maroon 5 and Cardi B. I also just recently found this older acoustic ballad “Hate and Love” by Jack Savoretti and Sienna Miller, but I can tell you my most favorite Beethoven songs: Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-Flat Major, Op. 73: II. Adagio un poco mosso and Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92 : II. Allegretto. I was able to hear the first one live at the Hollywood Bowl conducted by Esa Peka Salonen, and the other one by the LA Philharmonic at Disney Concert Hall, conducted by Dudamel- and it brought tears to my eyes. Music is always playing at my house - and I mean that quite literally because I have different Sonos speakers set up in different rooms and some are set up to play non-stop.
