Q &A

Maureen

CRACKNELL

“CREATIVITY HAPPENS WHEN WE CONNECT AND UTILIZE OUR TALENTS TO COMMUNICATE...” 1.Hey, Maureen! It’s great to interview you for another collection release. Can you tell us about your collection, Soulful? My latest collection inspired by the beauty that comes from surrounding ourselves with the things we love most. For me that includes family mementos, pieces of nature, handmade goods, and vintage finds in dreamy colors with pops of deep plum, rusty reds, and teal. 2.Everthing from the florals to the lace inspired print “Deepest Purpose” is so romantic! Would you consider yourself being a hopeless romantic? Creatively I have always been a hopeless romantic and I’m certainly one who LOVES love stories and romance. But mostly I wanted Soulful to showcase the sweet romantic boho look that evokes that dreamy and whimsical side of my style.

3.The colors of Soulful are so rich and elegant! What did you envision when you chose plums, brick reds, and neutrals for your collection? I love brightly colored designs but just as much I love lightly embellished designs and delicate soft hues paired with a romantic, gemstone inspired palette of ruby, amber, and amethyst. While I created this collection I imagined it being used to create beautiful dreamy dresses and quilts in soft, hazy hues with pretty, feminine details. 4. You mentioned that this collection celebrates the “gentle spirit of makers.” What do you think makes people who are creative special? I do believe that every person is born a creative person and life is made more beautiful when you choose to spend the rest of your life learning how to make the most out of your own individual creativity. I’ve also learned that being creative is not always a choice and joy isn’t always a part of the creative process. When I am being creative, I feel most alive and true to myself. It’s one of the greatest feelings to discover your own creativity and to learn things about yourself through your creative work. I’ve always had a passion for art but didn’t realize that sewing and fabric design was my thing until I tried it, and that’s when it hit me! Without a doubt that is special and it’s that passion that makes creative people so special.

how much I had to learn and I know there’s still so much yet to discover! Designing fabrics means constantly learning and making an effort with passion. Most importantly I’ve learned to not be discouraged with the process. That if you love what you do and you have confidence in your ability then you’ll be a great designer.

5. You’re currently hosting a huge sew along with Sharon Holland. Are you planning on designing a few blocks with Soulful? For my Sewcial Bee Sampler quilt I’m using prints from ALL of my AGF collections and it’s been so fun for me to see just how beautifully they all play together. I haven’t added in any Soulful prints just yet, but I certainly will try to include Soulful prints in the last few blocks we have still to make and share! 6. Many of your main prints are very intricate! What was the most difficult print you designed for Soulful? Floral Universe is the most complex floral I have created yet for fabric design. I wanted this print to have more shading and detail to look more like the Rapidograph pen and ink work I used to do. When it came time for coloring I realized early on that the artwork really shined when it was colored minimally and that was a difficult decision for me to accept because I had originally envisioned this print in full color! 7. Soulful is the 5th collection you design for AGF. How do you think you’ve evolved as a designer/artist since your first collection Wild and Free? Oh my goodness by leaps and bounds, and I don’t mean that boastingly, I just realize now

8. Do you have any advice for creatives trying to find their own style? Creativity happens when we connect and utilize our talents to communicate what’s inside, breathing it into existence. Of course, finding your own style can be easier said than done. Tapping into your individual creativity will not always come without a struggle, so be patient. It’s so important to give each new creative idea a try until you find a spark for that inspired flame inside of you, because when you do, it’s magic! 9. In addition to designing beautiful fabrics you always sew stunning projects! What’s one of your most memorable sewing experiences? Oh, this is a tough one! I truly just love making. I think the memorable part for me are the photoshoots that come after I finish a project. It’s been a while, but my husband and I will take my finished quilt tops and quilts out to beautiful parts of the county we live in to take photos to share. There’s always this moment when I’m looking through the lens of my camera and the quilt gets picked up by the wind just a little and the light shines down just so and it’s magnificent and beautiful and unforgettable. 10. Now that AGF offers rayon, have you considered venturing into garment sewing? Absolutely! A day hasn’t passed since I received my roll of Swifting Flora rayon that I haven’t thought about making a skirt for Haila and myself. It’s tough during these busy Summer months to encounter any extra sewing time, but come this Fall I’m making it a priority, I can’t wait!
