“I am Maureen. A stay-at-home mother of three, a lover of all things crafty and creative, and I make things by hand, at home in small town Pennsylvania.” Maureen Cracknell lives in small town Potter Country, Pennsylvania. She is a mother, wife, blogger, quilter, and lover of all things creative and handmade. Just a little over four years ago she started sewing and blogging at Maureen Cracknell Handmade; a simple, positive, and creative blog where she loves to share her projects, fabric stashes, sewing, and special family moments. Two years into blogging, she opened a Facebook page with intentions to share and connect with people who, like her, live with a passion to sew and quilt---most of who follow her blog, which has been supported and grown to over eighty thousand followers. These supporters continually give her encouragement and the opportunity to follow her path of creating and sharing. She’s been a proud member of several fabric manufacturer design teams throughout the years, including Art Gallery Fabric’s popular Fat Quarter Gang, and continues to work as an Independent Designer for Janome Sewing Machines. She is incredibly grateful for each of the opportunities that have led her where to where she is today!

Q &A

“...IT’S SUCH A BLESSING TO BE ABLE TO SPEND A WEEK AT THE OUTER BANKS OF NORTH CAROLINA...” 1. Hi Maureen! Congratulations on releasing your latest collection, Sun Kissed. We understand you drew a lot of inspiration from “spending time in the sunshine.” Can you tell us how this turned into fabrics? The winter’s here in Potter County, Pennsylvania are really long. Typically, by the time March rolls around I catch myself daydreaming about the sun, beautiful beaches and the warm atmosphere of our annual, July family vacation to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It’s the memories of the bright sun beating down on my daughter and nieces seasalty hair, and the waves crashing refreshingly at the tips of my toes while I watch my favorite girls play that inspired Sun Kissed!

2. Speaking of summer and the beach, do you have a favorite tropical getaway? It’s such a blessing to be able to spend a week at the Outer Banks of North Carolina in a beautiful, oceanfront beach house with my big family each year. Earlier this year, I traveled to Hawaii for the first time to visit my sister Catherine and her family. It was a special vacation shared with two of my sister’s and Catherine’s family, with lots of time spent exploring the magic of Hawaii. A trip I’ll never forget! 3. Describe “Sun Kissed” in three words. Bright, happy, dreamy. 4. How did you begin your process for creating this collection? This collection began with a brainstorming session where I wrote down everything that came to mind when I thought about my favorite Summertime memories and my family of beach-loving girls, allowing myself to remember my most meaningful days of Summer. From there, I created the colorstory and started working on prints, and I hope you can see in Sun Kissed the happiness and love that I have for this collection.

5. I’d love to see one of my designs turned into… For the Sun Kissed collection of quilting cottons, it’s quilts that I most hope to see, perhaps ones backed with terry cloth for trips to the beach and sunny day picnics. The canvas is just perfect for a summer tote bag you can make to carry all season long, and the rayon makes the most stunning, flowy, comfy summer dress, hence the name! 6. If you only could wear three prints from “Sun Kissed,” which ones would they be and why? I LOVE yellow, especially the yellows of Sun Kissed, so for sure I would love a sleeveless shirt dress in Summerdress Dreams Ray! I made a bag and a pillow with it so far, and the floral clusters in this print are so pretty, and are some of my favorite florals I’ve ever created! As I mentioned above a tote bag in my Woven Trails Lake Canvas will be perfect to wear all summer long. Finally, because it will be so cute and comfy, I’d love to make tank tops in my Sunspots Strawberry knit. The red & white with denim is classic summer!

7. Besides “all things summer,” what else has been inspiring you lately? Lately, I’m feeling inspired to sew new things for our home. When I first started sewing in 2010, I don’t think there was a chair in the entire house that wasn’t decorated with a handmade pillow. I’m feeling very ready to do a refresh -- to make new curtains, quilts & pillowcases for our beds and replace many of those pillows with new after years of wear from being loved. My home decor style has changed and now I have so many of my own fabrics to use, it’s time and will be such a fun project! I hope you’ll follow along at https:// maureencracknellhandmade.blogspot.com/ 8. What’s on your to-do list for 2019?! First up is to create a new AGF fabric collection and I can’t wait! After that’s a wrap, I hope to rearrange my sewing studio and I plan to get back to blogging more regularly. Keeping up with the blog became a challenge the second half of 2018 and I miss sharing daily there so much! I learned that if I don’t blog, much of what I make doesn’t get photographed and shared and since my blog has been my favorite way to document all that I make and how I change and grow as an artist, I’m itching to get back to it in 2019! I hope to see you there!
