VIRTUOSA by BARI J.
FABRIC PROJECT CATALOG
Virtuosa reminisces
on Bari J.’s days as a theater performer,
reimagining plays through dramatic yet melodic designs where the orchestra, the scenery, the chorus and the performers are reinterpreted.
Bold floral prints are mixed with harmonious geometrics
symbolizing the arc of a story. All set against two distinct palettes;
the mysterious romantic
and the warmhearted extrovert.
“Color is of the utmost importance in design.”
I was born and raised in Chicago, but decided to move to Scottsdale, Arizona with my two teenage daughters: Anna and Emily, and my husband Kevin to stay closer to my family. I have been passionate about design for as long as I can remember. As a child, my mother would paint and craft, so it was only a natural progression that I would inherit her love of crafting. I began crafting and creating jewelry, but when I first learned to sew I knew I had found my passion. I was hooked on it. That obsession is what inspired my own handmade handbag business and my first book: Inspired to Sew. My style is rather eclectic, and has grown over the years into what you see today. While I love vintage and soft designs, I am constantly drawn to color and bold prints which are very modern, as well as mixing the two for surprising combinations. I don’t hold back when it comes to mixing fabric prints and colors. The world around me inspires me…. I look at photos and imagine faraway pla-ces. I see a color and that inspires a whole collection. I am a color junkie. It was my love for fabric that got me back into graphic design and specifically textile design. In 2009, I created my first fabric line, Full Bloom. Since then, additional lines proceeded. Due to their popularity, they were featured in magazines including Accessories, Romantic Homes, Quilts and More, Studios, Belle Armoire, and many more.
Q &A
Bari J. “...I ALSO WANTED TO EVOKE A SENSE OF JOY WHICH IS WHERE THE ORANGES AND BLUES COME IN.”
1. Hi Bari! Congratulations on releasing your latest collection, “Virtuosa!” We understand you drew a lot of inspiration for these prints from your own personal experiences of performing in theatre. Can you elaborate more on how that inspiration turned into fabrics? I have a strong affinity for the theatre, I drew inspiration from various plays, the sound of music translate to prints and the general feeling that is derived from the joy of theatre. 2. Speaking of theater, what’s your favorite performance of all time? My favorite play I’ve ever been in is “A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream.”As for shows I’ve seen, I still love “Rent.” I’m dying to see “Hamilton.” 3. How did you come to choose the colors used in this collection? I wanted a sense of drama so purples and
deep dark, moody colors immediately came to mind. I also wanted to evoke a sense of joy which is where the oranges and blues come in. 4. Describe “Virtuosa” in three words. Happy, dramatic, uplifting. 5. What’s the most important thing to you when creating a fabric collection? That it tells a story and has an emotional pull. 6. Besides theatre, what else has been inspiring you lately? I’m obviously always inspired by art, but watching my daughter become involved in costume design has opened my mind to the costumes and sets we see on screen. I’m obsessed with “The Marvelous Mrs Maisel.” 7. What are you most excited to see makers create with “Virtuosa?” Home decor. I covered a few chairs and stools in it and I’m over the moon about how it looks in homes. I also can’t wait to see the dresses everyone makes! 8. Since you adore home decor, can you share with us three important tips to remember when styling a space? Choose items you love… if you love it there’s a way to make it work. Use florals in differing scales, and tie them together with a shape or color. Use a mix of high and low
priced items, handmade and store bought as well as vintage and new for a collected and curated look. 9. What’s currently on your playlist? I just added the new “A Star is Born” soundtrack.
