“The patterns of our lives have the capacity to connect deeply within us. They are simple expressions of our joy.” I grew up snuggled back in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina, where my love for patterns started a very long time ago. I spent countless afternoons at my mom’s creative quilt shop, sewing, crafting and falling in love with fabric. A childhood spent with hands in my mother’s fabric stashes quickly turned into dreams of designing my own fabrics. My husband and I spent a few years tucked away in a little vine covered cottage on the central coast of California, but have recently returned to our roots. I am mostly inspired by the great outdoors, from the largest of trees to the tiniest of leaves. Creating patterns with summery sweet hues is my happy place. I thrive on botanical gardens, sunshiney days, and nature walks- camera in one hand, sketchbook in the other. My goal has always been to create patterns that are organic and natural, joyful and lovely. I believe patterns are one of the ways that we can express ourselves and make our spaces beautiful. I love to weave parts of my life into each one of them, making the design process and end results very personal and meaningful.

Q &A

Bonnie

CHRISTINE

“YOU ARE CAPABLE OF WONDERFUL THINGS” 1.Wonderful Things is all about positive thoughts inspiration, and beautiful things. How did you gather inspiration for this sweet collection? I once heard someone say, “If you think something nice, be sure to say it”. It’s always stuck with me and something that I try to especially implement with my children. I wanted to create a line full of positive, loving quotes that would inspire everyone who uses it, both young and old. 2.With any creative craft, you learn new things in your creative process. Did you learn anything new about yourself when creating this collection?

Yes! This is the first time that I committed to painting with watercolors for a collection. I took a few watercolor classes, purchased the right supplies and spent a long time getting comfortable with the medium. I fell in love with the process, and the results! 3. Wonderful Things is filled with happy colors and positivity, especially the “Words to Live By” print! What’s your favorite quote from this print and why? My favorite quote (and the one that inspired the name of the collection) is “You are capable of wonderful things”. I think it’s so inspiring and full of hope and beauty. Anything is possible if you set your heart and mind on it! 4. You took an interesting take for the color palette of this collection. The “Honest Whispers” colorway is very soft and delicate while the “Honeyed Wonders” colorway is bright and bold. What made you choose this beautiful contrasting color palette? I think soft and delicate is somewhat expected from me, but I like to be a little unpredictable,

7. This collection is filled with cute prints that would be perfect for babies! Have you made anything for your baby girl Ollie with Wonderful Things? Of course! I’ve made her a lap warmer, flowy knit shirt and snuggly quilt for her bed. I think this collection is really sweet for babies, as well! 8. We’re always amazed how you balance your time with the kids, designing, and maintaining your blog Going Home to Roost! How do you manage your time between the family and your creative ventures? Both of my babies sleep really well, so I use nap time to accomplish most of my tasks. My husband also works from home, so we give each other ‘office hours’ from time to time. It’s truly such a blessing to be able to work from home with them! too. I love using black in my work which I think is a little unusual, and tossing in the vibrant pinks and yellows made it really come to life.

9. What kind of advice would you offer makers that want to pursue creative careers but are afraid to start?

5. How do you think you’ve evolved as an art- We all have big dreams and goals, and if ist/designer from your first collection to design- you’re like me, these can leave you feeling anywhere from incredibly creative and ining Wonderful Things? spired, to completely overwhelmed. When it comes to accomplishing BIG goals, I have Truly in so many ways! I think the overall vision found myself repeating the same steps over for my collections - from finding inspiration to and over again. I’ll start by dreaming BIG, final colors and layout has become a lot easthen fight the overwhelm by breaking down ier. Since I took the time to master the technithe steps in order to reach my goal bit by cal skills of design early on in my career, I can bit. By doing just one small thing every day, spend much more time focusing on design I have made some of my biggest dreams and the story that I want to tell through the come true (like becoming a fabric designcollection. er!). 6.Wonderful Things ranges from delicate flo10. We all have a list of wonderful things we rals, painterly prints, and graphic geometrics. can’t live without. What are some things on Can you tell us a bit about your design proyour list? cess to achieve this variety of prints? I think part of making a dynamic collection is bringing together several types of prints and making them all work together. It means that the final products, whether they’re bags, quilts or coats will be both interesting and beautiful.

Baby snuggles, honey in my coffee, my iPad Pro, fresh flowers, a Camera and sketchbook.
