TALAY THAI “Balancing the splendor of the restaurant’s appearance is a warm and friendly staff, casual but impeccable in their attitude and service.” by Jennifer Prugh Moffitt With all the restaurants to choose from in Palm Beach County, it can be hard to figure out what sets one apart from the others. We are blessed with amazing chefs, beautiful locations, a range of prices, and welcoming staff members. The true challenge is to find all of these things working together in one place. Behold Talay Thai! The second I step from the parking lot onto their sidewalk, I know I am in for something special. Their location is unassuming, nestled into a shopping center right off of PGA and the turnpike; but they have made it their own with lush greenery lining the sidewalk, and beautiful antique rickshaws right outside the front door. The inner décor is intimate, elegant, and charming – a bit more ornate than I’m used to. Even for a simple slow lunch on a Thursday, I feel very fancy and sophisticated dining at Talay Thai. Balancing the splendor of the restaurant’s appearance is a warm and friendly staff, casual but impeccable in their attitude and service. We are greeted at the front door by a woman with a beaming smile, who immediately stops what she is doing to welcome us and show us to our table. Plush, brightly colored cushions beckon from a comfortable booth, and a string trio plays a soft and delicate version of a Coldplay song over the radio. The relaxing ambiance is hard to resist. Our waitress appears immediately to take our drink order, brimming with enthusiasm for the food as she recommends we try the Talay Spring Rolls. The small freshly fried rolls stuffed with seafood and vegetables arrive hot and delicious, and are perfect when accompanied by a sweet and slightly spicy Thai iced tea. The lunch deals at Talay Thai are hard to beat, boasting a range of entrees from Pad Thai to Thai Fried Rice, and all the Curry dishes your heart desires. Heat can be tailored to your taste, from 1 (for the spice-sensitive babies, like me) all the way up to 5 (for those brave souls). Although, as our ever helpful waitress tells us, “Three is HOT.” Each meal comes with a simple green salad, and your choice of freshly made ginger or peanut dressing. I go straight for my favorite boring dish, Pad Thai with shrimp, but there is nothing boring about the Pad Thai here! It is flavorful and light, with crushed peanuts on the side and sweet shrimp mingling with crunchy green onions. Heat level 1 is just perfect for my sensitive taste buds. My lunch mate’s Thai fried rice (an amazing combination with tomato and egg) is a world apart at heat level 2 – you can definitely taste the difference! As we leave our lovely lunch, dangling bags of leftovers from our hands, we linger just a little while in the garden oasis, wondering if we might be allowed to take a rickshaw for a ride around the parking lot. Then I decide I’m too full for that anyway, and walk slowly to my car, thinking about what I’ll eat the next time I come for a visit.

Black Violin THE WORLD RENOWED MUSICAL DUO, WHO ALSO HAPPEN TO BE FORT LAUDERDALE NATIVES, TAKE TIME TO GIVE BACK TO OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY WITH A PERFORMANCE TO BENEFIT PALM BEACH COUNTY PUBLIC ART SCHOOL, PLUMOSA SCHOOL OF THE ARTS.
Black Violin, the classically-trained hip hop duo, will perform their inspired combination of hip hop, rock, and R&B in a concert at the Plumosa School of the Arts on Saturday, November 16 in Delray Beach. The concert is part of the Plumosa School of the Arts Foundation’s “Shooting for the Stars” evening to benefit the elementary school’s students. Black Violin has performed at President Obama’s Inauguration, sold out the New Victory Theater on Broadway, wowed audiences at the legendary Harlem Apollo Theatre, accompanied Alicia Keys at the 2004 Billboard Awards, and collaborated with P.Diddy, Kanye West, 50 Cent, Tom Petty, Aerosmith and the Eagles. Kev Marcus, who plays the violin, and Wil B, who plays the viola, are both Fort Lauderdale natives. “We are so fortunate that an act of this caliber will be performing in Delray Beach for an exciting community event,” said James Mueller, president of the Plumosa School of the Arts Foundation. “This talented duo will inspire the students of Plumosa. Their success fits into our school’s mission in promoting the vital importance of arts education for children and securing the resources to make it happen. Funds raised will directly benefit the kids at Plumosa School of the Arts through our Foundation.”

On Friday afternoon, November 15, Plumosa students and teachers will take part in a concert and conversation with the artists. Wil and Kev will share stories of their own personal journey—about the impact that music has had on their lives and the importance of establishing a solid foundation of positive values. The concert will be held at the Plumosa School of the Arts Auditorium, 2501 Seacrest Blvd., Delray Beach. What does coffee have to do with art? The simple answer is: “EVERYTHING”. Over the years I have earned the dubious reputation of being a Coffee Monster and I have no intention of disputing those claims. I don’t sleep a whole lot. I tend to stay up really late. Sometimes I work until 3 or 4am. This is my magic time-- No phone calls, no errands to run and the wife and kids are snug in their beds.
During the wee morning hours, coffee is my sole and constant companion: my caffeine muse. And I have learned that I am not the only one. Whether by choice or necessity, many of the artists I have talked to tend to favor some form of caffeinated vampire schedule similar to my own. As a matter of fact, when I came up with the idea of doing an illustrated coffee-inspired spread for Art Drone, there was SO much interest, that I wasn’t sure if we would be able to print all the work that people sent in! I am undecided as to whether I should be impressed or frightened about the fate of humanity. So sit back with an espresso, latte, frappuccino or good old fashioned mug of joe and enjoy the coffee show!

Northwood Village, located within West Palm Beach, has seen a drastic makeover in recent years. This is mostly due to their prosperous Wine and Art Promenade, along with an array of restaurants and a plethora of galleries to entice even the pickiest of shoppers. Yet, it’s what sits right next to Northwood Village that the locals are really buzzing about. The newly built artists‘colony, dubbed Lot 23, sits within a neighborhood right next to Northwood Village called Pleasant City, an area most never visit, until now. Lot 23 has been coined “The Artful Side Of Pleasant City”. It is changing the image of the neighborhood from a previously rundown area, to a youthful and artistic space. The vision and execution of this ambitious project comes to us from the mind of Grace Joyce, of the West Palm Beach CRA, who is responsible for the redevelopment of 5 target areas located in the Northwood/ Pleasant City district. Art Hive Magazine had the pleasure of sitting down with Grace as she explains how Lot 23 is changing the mindset of the Pleasant City neighborhood and how the artists are interacting and making a difference within the community. “I realized that through the Northwood Village Art and Wine Promenades that people really liked the quirky art and I really realized that we needed to create an artist community. So I did some research on different places around the country that had different types of artists’ communities. I found that all the artists’ communities were based on the artist’s income and I thought instead of that, what if we based subsidy on a community art program. So the artists would have to interact with the community, specifically with Pleasant City because the buildings are located in that neighborhood. “If we can get service minded artists who are willing to come into a community of opportunity, which Pleasant City is, they can build relationships with the children of the community. If you open a door for a child they will walk through it. They don’t know the things that they don’t know. Someone has to show it to them and who better than an artist. “The goal of this program is to introduce the community to the arts and anything that can enrich the lives of this community. Lot 23 is the only program like this in the entire country that allows the artists to make an unlimited amount of income as long as they volunteer a minimum of 16 hours month as well as implement a program within the community to educate and enrich the children with the artist’s art form. These artists are getting the deal of the century, and the community is getting an opportunity of a lifetime.”
Grace M. Joyce (RIGHT) is the City of West Palm Beach Redevelopment Administrator for the Northwood/Pleasant City Community Redevelopment Area. She is responsible for the budget and redevelopment of the five (5) target areas located in the Northwood/Pleasant City CRA district. Lauren Bothe (LEFT) is the Special Events & Social Media Coordinator for the West Palm Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). Lauren plans and implements all events held by the CRA, including the Award Winning Northwood Village Art & Wine Promenade, Show time at Blum Park, and Heart & Soulfest. Lauren's events have been widely featured in the Palm Beach Post, Palm Beach Magazine, WLRN, and New Times magazine.

Meet The Artists! Cole "Culprit" Rippe
Since the age of 15 Cole’s skill and imagination has flourished in nearly every aspect of the music process from writing, production, performing as both a recording artist and DJ, to his most recent endeavor opening his time to work one on one with aspiring artists who want to learn. With Cole possessing a keen insight of the music industry’s movement toward strong independent labels, he equips his students with the expertise to create professional quality production for a variety of use.
Ivan “B-Boy Navi” Salazar
After being introduced to Breakin by a friend and fellow b-boy, Ivan has been dancing since 2001. Ivan has been competing in B-Boy competitions from the local level all the way up to the national level and has reached his highest accomplishment by winning the 2012 Miami B-Boy Pro-am 2012 championship. Ivan regularly spends time volunteering at Catalyst Hip-hop youth group by sharing his knowledge and experience in Breakdancing.
William “B-Boy Stilez” Deal From an early age he became fascinated with music & dance, and in 1994 he became an aspiring DJ for local hip-hop parties and venues. It was at an event he saw a group of local Breakdancers; Will was immediately inspired and has been dancing since 1996. He sees where he can impart the knowledge he has to the next generation. He maintains high standard such as integrity, respect and honesty around him. William is an Assistant Director for Catalyst Hip Hop Youth Group.
Wayne Smith Wayne currently works as a custom framer at Jerry`s Artarama in West Palm Beach. He’s also a bass player and glass artist. Bass playing and glass work are the two skills Wayne will be teaching at the CCE in Northwood Village as part of his Lot 23 program.
Jason “JaFleu” Fleurant “On January 12, 2010, after witnessing the devastation in my
homeland of Haiti after the earthquakes, something was triggered in me. Inspired and hurt by the images flooding the TV screen, feeling powerless to help I did something I hadn't done since my freshman year of high school. I started drawing. Art began to take a life of its own, and began to be my therapy. Every brush stroke revealing and relieving any and every emotion I had locked up for years. I became my art and my art became me.”
Sharon Leonard Sharon Leonard was born in Birmingham, Alabama. She loves to sew and sing. Her main goal in life is to take back all that has been taken from us through negativity, by reaching the masses telling them of the love of self and others.
Abasi Hanif Abasi has always been a creative person and student of life. After appearing on numerous local mix C.D’s and releasing an album with a childhood friend under the name Majestyk, Abasi would soon venture into the world of spoken word poetry and African drumming. Working his way up from performer to host, he became a powerful force in the local poetry scene. Abasi would eventually begin hosting his own Hip Hop style open mic called “Homebass” where poets, rappers, comedians, singers, and thespians could showcase their talents in a comfortable environment of their peers.

LOT 23
IS AN ART-CENTRIC, NEIGHBORHOOD-SCALE ARTIST COLONY LOCATED WEST OF BLUM PARK ON 23RD STREET, JUST SOUTH OF NORTHWOOD VILLAGE. THE PROJECT IS COMPRISED OF TWO FOUR-UNIT APARTMENT BUILDINGS, THAT HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY RENOVATED AND A STUDIO SPACE NOT TO EXCEED 20,000 SQUARE FEET WHICH WILL BE NEW CONSTRUCTION! The rent for the residential units will be subsidized through the participation in the Community Arts Program (CAP). Each tenant will be required a minimum of 16 hours per month in the CAP. The artist will create the “program” that will benefit the residents located in the Northwood Pleasant City CRA boundary. The venues that will host the CAP will be, the Center of Creative Education, the Pleasant City Elementary School, the Pleasant City Multicultural Center, Blum Park and all CRA functions and events!

MATISYAHU After emerging on the music scene in 2004 with a very distinct look and sound, the former Hasidic Jewish reggae singer has evolved. Taking a decade to grow, both spiritually and musically, Matisyahu is hard at work and staying relevant all the while staying true to himself. He is currently on tour throughout the United States, Mexico and South America while promoting his latest album, Spark Seeker. The soft spoken and eloquent Grammy nominated musician took time to talk with Art Hive Magazine about what inspires him to create. “MY SENSE OF RELIGION AND MY CONNECTION WITH JUDAISM HAS DEFINITELY DEVELOPED AND CHANGED FROM WHERE IT HAD BEEN WHEN I INITIALLY CAME ONTO THE SCENE IN 2004.” ANGELA: How did you come to reggae as the style of music you'd use to express yourself? MATISYAHU: It's always been the number one style of music I've listened to and loved. As I started performing, I started developing a reggae flavor to my style of music instead of simply rapping. I used the Old Testament references similarly to the way the Rastafarians did and it all really made sense to me. Really, the producer I worked with on my first record was interested in creating a reggae roots record and I was totally into that as well. ANGELA: When you sit down and write your music, what is your inspiration? MATISYAHU: I draw my inspiration for my lyrics from a lot of different places but normally the main inspiration comes from the music itself. When I just sit down and listen to my own music or music from a producer I'm working with, it usually inspires me to write. It comes less from a influential place and more of an instinctual place. It's all about the senses. ANGELA: I know you are going on a huge tour this summer! What do you do mentally and physically do to prepare yourself for such a large tour? MATISYAHU: I really just try to pull my act together and try to eat a lot healthier and work out. I also have a voice teacher that I work with, and I have to finish recording the new vocals for my new record before going on tour. Mainly, I just get myself physically healthy and prepared.
ANGELA: I know that when you first came on the music scene you had a very distinct look and recently you've changed, ditching the yarmulke and dark clothes. What prompted the change? MATISYAHU: I really feel like I've changed over time. My sense of religion and my connection with Judaism has definitely developed and changed from where it had been when I initially came onto the scene in 2004. In the last couple of years I've really started taking my own approach to the religion and used what I've learned over the past 10 years and through my experiences in Judaism to create my own unique approach instead. ANGELA: If you hadn't found music, what do you think you would be doing with your life? MATISYAHU: It would be hard to think about that. I really don't spend time ever thinking about the "what ifs" and really just try my best to make the most of what I already have. ANGELA: I know you are going to be coming to our neck of the woods as the headliner for the Friends of Nature Festival in Miami which is all about living a healthy lifestyle. Are you excited about coming down to South Florida? MATISYAHU: I am very much so, yes. I've very much been a believer in eating healthy, organic farming, and taking care not to ingest chemicals needlessly so I'm looking forward to the festival. Change Isn't Always Good by Jennifer Love Gironda I usually try to keep my articles light hearted and fun because folks that know me, well, they know that is who I am. My goal is always to stay inspired and to help others do the same. But sometimes, well…sometimes I get down and for just a second, I lose my sparkle (shhh, don’t tell). The purpose of this piece is to speak about staying inspired despite change, and fear of that change. Over the past few months I have had a series of…well…changes. I moved. I started a new job. Life became kind of hectic and I was thrown off my usual schedule. I was not able to finish pieces every day, only able to start them to be finished later (which if you know the way I work this sent me into a frenzy). My studio space wasn’t set up in my new place, art supplies were everywhere. And truthfully, I didn’t handle it all that well, at all. (If you don’t believe me, ask my husband.)
that I am scared of, that scares all of us artistically? Fear of putting yourself out there and…failing. It is so much safer to stay in the realm of what you already know. All you can do is just keep on going, keep learning, keep evolving, keep creating…whoever you are out there, going through whatever it is you are going through, your art will get you through it. That is how you make progress, how you improve, grow. I know that there are so many bigger problems out there in the world, but when it’s all said and done your creative well-being is important too. So take care of yourself. It is okay to take a mini-trip to sad town, but for goodness sake don’t stay there!
•Give yourself some quiet time for the mundane tasks that pile up and interfere with your creative time. •Seek people that are supportive of you and that build you up…you will surely return the favor. •Don’t be afraid of learning something new, or failing at something new, or both. •…And if all else fails cry, then take a nap and just start over fresh tomorrow. But make time for that art…and don’t be afraid of change. (Throws glitter in the air and does a celebratory leap!)
It was just way too much ‘new’ all at once. I didn’t have a safety net, not even my own home. Faced with learning a new art form for my job I felt inadequate, like I did not have anything to offer from my own background. It was like all that I had done artistically didn’t matter. In the process I have been stubborn and truth be told, scared to learn new things. I let the fear get to me. But, what is it

film REVIEWS THE ICEMAN The Iceman is based on the real life mob hitman Richard Kuklinski who is estimated to have killed between 100 to 200 people in his career. Starring Michael Shannon as Kuklinski, we are shown a dual existence of loving family man and cold hearted killer. Shannon did a stellar job at maintaining the intimidating persona throughout the film and really sold the anger in the times he showed it. The role that really blew me away was Chris Evans, aka Captain America, as the long haired hitman driving an ice cream truck. The guy has great variety in his acting and it really shines through in the indie films he does like this. Every shot and piece of ambience makes this film stand out from other mob films with a sense of dreariness that pervades. The only thing I really didn't care for in the film was the pacing and climax, which in some ways are really the same issue. No time is wasted getting into who Kuklinski is and the plot has a nice stride up until the middle. Things started to fall off and the plot drifted a little. The ending of the film is already bound to the events of real life with the police arresting Kuklinski which shouldn't be changed. The problem is it makes for a relatively down ending to the film and it isn't really profound or exciting. The protagonist is set up and we have no sense of justice for the people who did that to him. Of course the protagonist was a killer so him getting away isn't a good ending but it feels like we follow this guy on his journey just to watch him go to prison and nothing more which feels a bit flat.
GIVE IT A WATCH IF:
- You're a fan of Winona Rider, Michael Shannon, or Chris Evans as they all do a great job in this film. - Films based off of real life events are your thing. - The duality of family man and hitman and how these two personas were literally kept apart till the police came for the guy sounds interesting (it should).
AVOID IF:
- Happy endings or big shoot outs are what you prefer in an ending. - You have a distaste for violence, this film features a bit (go figure). - You want a likeable protagonist.

INDIE FILMS THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES This film tackles the idea of father son relationships and the impact they have on future generations. The cast is phenomenal with Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendes, Bradley Cooper, and more delivering realistic but powerful performances. It's a long film with a bit of an unconventional structure but this experimentation worked out well giving the film a grand scope of time and lineage. The characters work well because there aren't many clear heroes or villains. Everyone just sort of exist in their own way with their actions and words being influenced by the pressures of their world and those around them. Some moments in the film are so packed with crazy tension because of the ties we can see to earlier moments in the film that indirectly set up these situations. It isn't a perfect film but nothing really stood out as a major issue other than maybe a slow start. Important to note is that the length of the film may be a turn off for some, but for those willing it pays off. The film jumps around in time and character perspective so be prepared to witness numerous journeys instead of just one. What is so poignant about this film is that none of the character's are ever really out of focus though as they continue to influence each other even when not in focus. The film goes for big and succeeds with an experience that not many films being released currently offer. The film is technically sound with beautiful cinematography and a fitting soundtrack that helps to establish the world we're watching unfold.
GIVE IT A WATCH IF:
- The theme of father son relationships and relationships in general being explored over a period of time interests you. - You're looking for something different. This film really succeeds in standing out without being pretentious about it. - You enjoy the thrill of watching a series of events and their consequences play out.
AVOID IF:
- Long films bother you, this one runs in around 2 hours and 20 minutes. - You prefer the single protagonist approach. This movie is really about people's influences on each other more so than any one person. - You're not in the mood for a tense film. I wouldn't call this a thriller or anything, but after a slower start the film builds off of this energy and doesn't let down till the end.

ART HIVE SPOKE WITH HIM ABOUT HIS LOVE OF PHOTOGRAPHY AND WHAT INSPIRES HIM AS AN ARTIST.
LUCY: When did you begin taking photos? BC: I started taking photos in high school. I was always an artsy kid, creative. I took a photography class and I was hooked immediately. It was almost like an addiction. Every free second I had at school I would be in the dark room. I loved it there -- the smell of chemicals, trying out new prints. They gave you film, paper, and a camera --everything you needed. I took full advantage. LUCY: You credit your high school photography instructor Mr. Norwood with really encouraging your love of photography. Tell me a little about Mr. Norwood. BC: He saw that I had a particular interest and we understood one another. He fostered an environment where creativity was strongly encouraged and I was able to flourish. I would go in all directions and he loved it. He is all about that.” LUCY: How do you choose the subjects you photograph? BC: When people ask what I’m shooting I say, “I don’t know yet.” I might have a plan to go somewhere. It’s along the way I end up getting the picture I really love because of a small, minute thing… Be open to possibilities… I had an appointment with a model and she cancelled and I got a picture of this homeless man and that made my whole day. If you have set goals, that’s great. But always keep your eyes open. LUCY: You take photos of abandoned houses, hotels, movie

theatres, even an amusement park barren since Hurricane Katrina. What draws you to photograph abandoned places? BC: The thing with abandoned buildings is to capture the soul of a place that once existed but is no more…With the decay, I find so much texture and I really like texture. And I like the adventure. A little bit of trespassing here and there provides some excitement in my life. It’s fun to go where people wouldn’t normally go. LUCY: What advice do you have for a young photographer? BC: Go do it. And do it a lot. Let yourself be uncomfortable and let yourself explore strange and unusual places and subject matters. Don’t ever not take a picture because you think it might be a dumb picture. Get out of your comfort zone. If you need to lay down on the street in front of 100 people to take a picture of a leaf. Do that. Let them wonder what you are doing. It’s OK. the HONEY HIVE “UNLIKELY ARTISTS” AT THE PALM BEACH ZOO by Audrey Lynn
Many things have been said about these artists in the past, both good and bad, like they’re temperamental, creative, wild and obsessed. Some of them even drool while they work. They can’t help it. They’re animals. Wild animals that live at the Palm Beach Zoo! It was a true privilege to go behind the scenes to watch these unlikely artists at work. Lemurs, alligators, otters, kinkajous and more are part of an enrichment program called “Paws for a Cause” offered at the Palm Beach Zoo. Animals create art work by using their paws, claws, noses, beaks, mouths, tongues, tails and more to paint canvases that are then sold to benefit the Zoo. It’s like arts and crafts for two and four-legged creatures. The program is designed to give the animals something fun to do while giving back to their own kind. Claudia Harden, the marketing manager for the Zoo, says, “enrichment programs are designed to make life more interesting for the animals who live in captivity such as a Siamang climbing a tree to get a banana. It keeps them from getting bored.” The Siamang Gibbon apes are the only animals at the Zoo who paint canvases with paint brushes. Now, that’s talent! New Guinea singing dogs have their special talents, too. They have unique rotating paws which allow them to climb trees. Perhaps, that’s why they make such great artists! Sydney, the female singer, seemed to be more into painting than her brother, Mic. He seemed more intrigued by the shredded chicken snacks they were getting from their trainers, Maura Powers and Callie Coxson. Sydney also seemed to enjoy the human companionship a bit more. Unfortunately, some people have chosen to own New Guinea singing dogs as pets. They’re not meant to be domesticated animals. They are wild ones.

Malayan Tigers also enjoy painting canvases. The female and mother of three boys, Berapi, might not be the next Van Gogh but her tiger stripes make her an amazing work of art, herself! Her two-year-old sons frolic around the canvas creating interesting art. Claudia says she owns one of the most treasured pieces, “A tiger lost a whisker while painting and it’s now part of the art.” Of course, Ruby, the African Grey parrot, could always include a feather but not today. Ruby seemed to know what was expected of her when she was placed onto a shiny silver canvas. Using her talons, she added dabs of purple and blue from a Frisbee that doubled as a paint palette. It’s important to point out that the paint the animals are using is a non-toxic children’s paint which is easily removed. For instance, the gopher tortoise, Frannie, got rinsed off after today’s art session by a caring zookeeper. The tigers, panther and black bears, however use their rough tongues to safely remove the paint from their paws.

Andrew Aiken, the President and CEO of the Palm Beach Zoo, encourages everyone to visit the Zoo adding that through the thousands of keeper talks each year guests can learn “simple things that people can do in their everyday life, all designed to really help wildlife and the planet.” The Zoo’s mission statement is simple, as well. “The Palm Beach Zoo exists to inspire people to act on behalf of wildlife.” If you’d like to make a donation to the Palm Beach Zoo or to purchase the amazing art work created by these unlikely artists, go to palmbeachzoo.org and click on “support”. The paintings would make a great holiday gift especially for that person who has everything. Chances are you don’t know anyone who owns an original painting of ocean waves done by an otter! INTERVIEW WITH THE KRAVIS CENTER'S CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

Situated in the hub of downtown West Palm Beach, The Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts has become a prominent institution known for everything from Broadway musicals to arts education for local students. Now in its 28th year, the Kravis Center is evolving to keep up with the ever changing needs of the community by bringing to the stage a little something for everyone. From comedy engagements with the outlandish Joan Rivers, to the smash hit “Dixie’s Tupperware Party”, the Kravis Center can tickle the fancy of just about anyone. All of these diverse shows are exactly what the new Chairman of the Board, Jane Mitchell, expects. “Our goal is to preserve the significant contributions that this fine cultural institution has made. Our community, through its diverse schedule of national and international artists and its comprehensive arts education program, is serving as a home for local and regional organizations to showcase their work and acting and as an economic catalyst to increase travel and tourism in Palm Beach County.” Jane Mitchell is the first woman to become the Chairman of the Board of the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. She is the perfect fit as a previous musician herself, and with her thriving entrepreneurial spirit. Art Hive Magazine had the pleasure of sitting down with Jane to find out what exactly the new season will bring. Angela: As technology becomes more prominent in everyone’s life, how is the Kravis Center adapting to this change on a theatrical level? Jane: We want to stay in pace with what’s going on. We are active on social media and we are bringing new shows that can be for just about anyone. Children are using technology much more and I am excited about a new show coming to the stage, “Video Games Live” that will have 3 giant screens on stage. There will be lots of visuals and special effects on stage. All this will be accompanied by an orchestra that will be performing all the best known songs from video games. It’s a great springboard that can bridge the gap to the younger generation and by having an orchestra play it, it even appeals to the older generation as well. The Broadway series is another success, in its 6th season now, and it has been doing wonderfully. The ticket sales have been the highest on record this year. We want to keep pace and stay in touch with the changing times. Angela: What are your goals as the Chairmen of the Board? Jane: My goal is to hold on and preserve the quality we hold really true to. Let it evolve with the changing times and keep an eye on the cutting edge so we can bring new ideas and be willing to see what the audience will accept. The audience dictates on what we

should have on stage. I have the same mission the founder had and we stay true to that. Our mission has always been the same, to bring world class entertainment to the community and to provide arts education to our community and its children. There is “Something for everyone”. Angela: How has the Kravis Center helped on the educational level, with arts programs being cut out of the school systems? Jane: There is a huge educational aspect we implement here. We offer different shows for children from elementary age to high school. We even offer guidance for teachers teaching the arts. We have our own pamphlets for teaching certain programs and developing curriculum. We work closely with the school districts. We want to fill in were we can when funding is cut from schools. We also have a very active arts camp over the summer where students become educated about stage craft. They write a small performance and even perform it on the stage.
