“Year’s end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us. Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right.” -Oprah Winfrey This may or may not come as a relief to you, but the holiday season has come to an end. The New Year is here and 2014 offers exciting promises for Art Hive Magazine. In this issue, we are proud to bring you true local talent, directly from Palm Beach County. For starters, we are thrilled to feature an ‘Ink Master’ star, musician, and model Lea Vendetta as the face of ‘Art Hive Indie Bride’ for January 2014. We were privileged to spend the day with her during her photo shoot at the ‘Sundy House’ in Delray, and share in her positive, creative and inspirational spirit. Micah Kvidt’s photography of Lea really shows him to be a master of his craft. Another Palm Beach County resident, Artist Jason Fleurant “aka JaFleu”, is the subject of this issues ‘Artist To Know’. He’s a painter who’s star is on the rise. JaFleu’s work is quickly gaining notoriety and his art was recently featured in a gallery during Art Basel 2013. Also, look out for stories and interviews including Lee Ann Lester, the creator of Art Palm Beach, features including 2 amazing charities united in helping children, Art Basel fun and much, much more from our talented staff writers! We are so grateful and thankful to be with you in the new year and hope that 2014 has as much promise and inspiration for you as it does for us at Art Hive. We think Oprah Winfrey said it best, “Year’s end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us. Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right.” - Oprah Winfrey.

HAROLD'S COFFEE “THE INVITING STAFF AND ATMOSPHERE CAN LEAD YOU TO YOUR COFFEE EUPHORIA.” by Angela Yungk Coffee is what makes the world go round. We drink it morning, noon, and night. Yet it seems like the best coffee is usually a well kept secret, only known by the locals that keep it alive through their daily consumption. And if you are one of the lucky ones to learn of this secret society of coffee drinkers, then you know you can never go back. This issue I visited Harold’s Coffee Lounge in Northwood Village. Harold’s offers a neighborhood hangout, artistic haunt and they also happen to produce some of the best coffee in town. Shhh, don’t tell anyone!
Carbonated coffees and teas can be the substitute for any soda fiend. If you are looking to get a good buzz, you have to try the delicious and unique blend of the Chocolate Peppermint carbonated coffee. Freshly brewed carbonated flavored teas can also give a mid-day boost to anyone. For the fruit lover, coming this year will be organic cold press juices from local farms. Harold’s also offers goodies. The aroma of fresh baked pastries fill the cafe throughout the day, to pair with any cup of joe. Keith Palagye, owner of Harold’s (named after his psychiatrist), has a fresh approach to the standard of what coffee should be. Creating coffee that is meant to be enjoyed and savored. The inviting staff and atmosphere can lead you to your coffee euphoria. Drinking a “regular” cup of coffee will never be the same after you visit Harold’s. - ANGELA YUNGK

Harold’s Coffee Lounge features an open patio in the front of the shop where you can drink your coffee or just hangout for an afternoon with your friends. Paintings from local artists hang inside the walls and they even feature a backyard with oversized murals on the fence that surround the perimeter. Harold’s uses the Japanese Kyoto style of brewing coffee that takes 12-16 hours to produce just 1 liter of coffee. Because the acidity is taken out when you brew this way, it leads to some of the best tasting coffee possible. All the coffee at Harold’s is free trade along with handmade syrups to add to any cup.

ARTIST TO KNOW “EVERY BRUSH STROKE REVEALED AND RELIEVED ANY AND EVERY EMOTION I HAD LOCKED UP FOR YEARS. I BECAME MY ART AND MY ART BECAME ME.”
DO YOU KNOW
JaFleu?
Sometimes, maybe often times, inspiration is born out of tragedy. So, when Jason Fleurant witnessed the inescapable images from the devastation of his homeland of Haiti in early 2010, he did something he had not done since high school. Feeling hurt and powerless to help, he started drawing. At this moment, JaFleu was born.

“ART TO ME IS A MEANS TO
ESCAPE.” “Art started off with me just sketching the daily images I saw, on copy paper while at work. Then it moved to me getting art pencils, then to cheap water colors, then to cheap paint. After being told by my friend Yanatha that I should try my hand at putting the work on Canvas, I never looked back. Art began to take a life of its own and began to be my therapy. Every brush stroke revealed and relieved any and every emotion I had locked up for years. I became my art and my art became me. What I hope my artwork always reflects is the idea that rules do not matter in art and that you don't have to be confined to the idea that you can only paint this way, or do this thing. I've never been formally trained and everything I've learned has been by trial and error. I hope my art work always reminds people that out of tragedy and darkness beauty can emerge like the rose that grew from the concrete. I hope it shines as a beacon to others, to the forgotten and abandon street corners and blocks, like where I'm from. Letting them know that there is more to life and that art is not a joke, as we were unfortunately trained by society to believe, but as a way to reach past where you currently are. Art to me is a means to escape. It means being able to, as I once heard from a woman named Anita, 'Express the inexpressible'. It means that I have a way to become Neo in my own ‘Matrix’ and bend reality. It means a weapon that I could use to speak about issues with no restrictions and really have an impact. I've always heard that 'Words have the power of life and death' and that 'Pictures are worth a thousand words'. So imagine the power of creating a painting. I'm an artist. I believe in the power of art, and the right of every man, woman, and child to create. I believe God gives us all talents and puts us on the path to make something out of it, and we have the option to decide whether to follow or not. I've found my path, and I hope to create art that will be thought provoking, inspiring and beautiful, as well as therapeutic to my own soul. Yet, when it is all said and done, my main hope is to leave a 'Beach Chair'. A legacy for my unborn children, nieces and nephews. I want to leave them something they can be proud of, and hopefully it will make life easier for them. I am Jason Fleurant, but I also am JaFleu...an artist who is just dreaming out loud.” For more information on Jason and his work, please visit him on his website, jafleu.blogspot.com and facebook.com/JaFleuTheArtist.

“IT TAKES AN INDUSTRIAL-STRENGTH EGO TO BELIEVE THAT YOUR WORK IS GOOD ENOUGH TO SHARE IN THE FIRST PLACE, BUT THEN THE EGO NEEDS TO DO DOUBLE DUTY AS A KIND OF MENTAL ARMOR TO DEFLECT THE SLINGS AND ARROWS OF FICKLE PUBLIC OPINION.”
EGO
I think egos have gotten a bum rap. The ego is said to be “a person's sense of self-esteem or self-importance”. Psychoanalytic theory describes the ego as “the organized conscious mediator between the person and reality especially by functioning both in the perception of and adaptation to reality”. 1. That doesn’t sound so bad. Translated into normal language, it turns out that the ego is the part of your mind that allows you to recognize your own worth and then utilize that knowledge to function in the real world. Sweet. So why would “having an ego” be considered a bad thing? Allow me to ramble for a bit (as if you have a choice)… Every artist I know is very much an individualist. That being said, many of my friends who don’t make art have rainbowcolored hair, piercings, tattoos, or wear 14
ART HIVE MAGAZINE
Adventure Time t-shirts. “Those types” of people often get asked: “Why are you trying so hard? You think you’re special or something?” Well in my opinion, everyone is special. But one would indeed require a healthy dose of self-confidence (i.e. ego) to sport a two foot tall blue mohawk because that, my friend, will be attracting some attention. Consciously or unconsciously, we artists tend to put ourselves on a pedestal. (We’re special, remember?). But personally, I don’t think that the act of creating art is very daring in and of itself. Nearly every kid who can hold a crayon will doodle given the opportunity. Then there are those who pursue art as a vocation. They invest years into learning how to express themselves through painting, sculpture, dance, prose or verse. Yet during the course of their education their egos have been safely cocooned in the knowledge that they are being critiqued as a student. The most difficult part of an artist’s career is when they emerge from the academic chrysalis to show their art in a public forum. It takes an industrialstrength ego to believe that your work is
good enough to share in the first place, but then the ego needs to do double duty as a kind of mental armor to deflect the slings and arrows of fickle public opinion. Offering my art up as a sacrifice to the whims of petulant critics hasn’t gotten any easier over the years either. My paintings and drawings are not simply squiggles on a piece of paper. I see my art as a visual extension of my inner psychic machinations— a very personal expression of my secret vulnerabilities made visible. Simply put: If you insult my art, you insult me. To hang a painting in a gallery or publish it in a book feels like throwing my own child into a pool of piranhas. It has taken many years to cultivate a strong enough belief in myself to be able to get to the place where I am not only willing to take the flack of critics but also to appreciate their honest critique. So to all you artists out there-- take my advice and hang on to your ego—but keep it on a short leash. And don’t let it poop in anyone else’s yard. - JON HUNT 1. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ego

BEE nice. I may be silly, and maybe I took a little liberty with the title of my article for this issue, but I am seriously writing about the importance of being nice. It may seem like common sense, but you would be amazed how many people out there are not nice to others…and it makes a difference. “I'VE LEARNED THAT PEOPLE WILL FORGET WHAT YOU SAID, PEOPLE WILL FORGET WHAT YOU DID, BUT PEOPLE WILL NEVER FORGET
HOW YOU MADE THEM FEEL.” ― MAYA ANGELOU
support your fellow artists. We are all out there trying to get our work seen, our music heard. No one likes to feel unnoticed or unappreciated. The smallest act on your part, attending a show, posting a positive comment on a work in progress, sharing information about shows or opportunities that you feel may be of interest…it all adds up, and it can really make a difference for someone. Even though it is just you and your paintbrush or pencil, or your guitar, or your words on paper…. truthfully we are all in this together. The larger cause is advocating for the arts…that way we can continue to do what we love.
BEEing nice means…be 16

someone that others want to work with. Be on time, heck, be early. Be polite, be professional, take notes or find some way to remember the information. Keep promises and appointments. Speak highly of others…and if you can’t say something nice just do what my momma always said, don’t say anything at all. You will be taking the higher road, remember that and feel good about your choice to hold your tongue.
BEEing nice means…
be nice to yourself. Don’t be too hard on yourself, take time for you. You can’t do your best work and you probably aren’t that great to be around when you are tired or sick. Yeah, we artists have a special sleep schedule (for some of us that means none…
like Jon Hunt!)… but at the end of the day you know what you need to function and to ‘play well with others’. You are worth it, take care of yourself. You are a good person, a talented person, remember that. Maybe I am too sunshiny and sparkly. But one thing I always think to myself is, ‘would I want to work with ME?’. You can be the most talented person in the world, but if you can’t interact with others in a positive way then you are really doing yourself a disservice. It’s true that there are tons of artists, musicians, actors and writers that aren’t pleasant to work with…you don’t have to be one of them. - JENNIFER LOVE GIRONDA

the creative VOICE
From Fashion To Flowers:
The Art Of Pineapple Grove Artist Inge Behrens An artist from a young age, a seamstress in her teens, a fashion designer and pattern maker in her early 20s in 1960s Germany, Inge Behrens discovered a love of oil painting while living in California in 1994. Her paintings are joyful celebrations of flowers, close-up and dazzling with color.
“THAT WAS ALWAYS MY DREAM TO LEARN HOW THE OLD MASTERS PAINTED… LEONARDO DA VINCI, MICHELANGELO, VERMEER…RUBENS.”
LUCY: When did you know you were an artist?
painted… Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Vermeer…Rubens.
IB: I was drawing even before I went to school. When I was sick my mother only had to give me a pencil and a piece of paper and I was happy…Watercolors I did on my own always…from first grade on.
LUCY: You paint landscapes from your travels and you completed a series of smiling faces of Buddha after a visit to the temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. But time and again you return to flowers. Why do you paint so many flowers?
IB: It was never boring. It was never the same. When you finished one subject or dress or collection…before you know it you have a dozen different dresses in different colors. I loved it because it was so inspiring. Also, I had a great, great boss and she gave me absolute free hand. She would pick and choose from what I designed. LUCY: It wasn’t until 1994 that you went to a private art school to learn oil painting. By then, you were living in California after raising your family. What inspired you to study oil painting? IB: That was always my dream to learn how the Old Masters 18

IB: I like flowers. For me, it’s soothing and uplifting. It’s beautiful. When a young man’s courting a lady they bring flowers. So when you can’t buy flowers at least you have them on your wall. LUCY: How do you select the colors for the flowers that you paint? IB: When I paint flowers, it’s mainly the shape and the numbers of petals but otherwise I do how I like it. I gave the lotus a different color than pink…it’s actually a pink lotus…(but) I decided to make it blue. LUCY: What do you enjoy most about being an artist? IB: The freedom of it. That you can put something on the canvas (even) when they say, “You’re crazy.” There’s a big freedom you have on the canvas. For more on the art of Inge Behrens, visit www.ingeberhens.com and her gallery at 181 N.E. 2nd Ave. in Pineapple Grove in Delray Beach. - LUCY LAZARONY

LUCY: At 15, you moved to Hamburg and apprenticed as a seamstress for three years. By 22, you were designing cocktail dresses and opera gowns sold in very high-end ladies boutiques in Hamburg. And as your own pattern maker you showed others the easiest way to create each of your designs. You designed and created dresses and gowns made of silk, chiffon, lace, very fine wool and fur. What did you enjoy most about fashion design and pattern making?

when creativity means BUSINESS
INTERVIEW WITH ART FAIR PIONEER
by Angela Yungk
LEE ANN LESTER
Lee Ann Lester is known in the art world as the pioneer for some of the most innovative art fairs around the world. Along with her husband David, Lee Ann runs some of the most successful art fairs including Art Palm Beach, American International Fine Art Fair, Miami Art Design, and The SeaFair - The Megayacht Venue. All of which are run under the direction of the (IFAE ) International Fine Art Expositions. IFAE gives the public a taste of the art world from the extravagant and luxurious, to emerging and contemporary. Art Hive Magazine had the pleasure of speaking with Lee Ann on how she started this avant-garde way of producing art fairs. Angela: What is your background in art? Lee Ann: Well that’s a long story! I’m a psychologist by training and David is an attorney. I have always been involved in the arts. We had our careers and we went to an art event and we thought “Oh wouldn’t that be fun to have a gallery”. So we opened a gallery and slowly but surely we gave up our careers. We then had 3 galleries and we went to an art fair and we told the organizers, “You know you don’t understand art dealers and how they think.” And they said, “Well, if you think you can do a better job, than you can start one.” So we started a Chicago fair and started Art Miami and then the company went bankrupt. And unfortunately the man who was the CEO, who was our very good friend who had been the publisher, committed suicide and it was very tragic. Then they gave us the fairs. By then we had taken over the Miami Fair and we launched the Chicago Fair and Art Asia Hong Kong. Then we had to decide, do we want to be gallery owners or art fair organizers? We decided to be art fair organizers. Angela: Do you think being a woman in the art world has been a help or has it hindered you at all? Lee Ann: It’s interesting because I started in the corporate world, but in the arts world strangely enough, it’s been a female dominated industry for many years. So I think that it’s been an easier industry for women to be entrepreneurs. Angela: You reached out to the local arts districts, what was your goal in doing this? Lee Ann: Well, a couple of reasons. First is because I think art has so many different mediums. Art creates communality and understanding. I think because of the issues that are facing us as we are going forward, we are going to need a great deal of ingenuity and creativity to face the innovations, and that is going to come from the creative arts and the creative arts society. I think that Palm Beach and much of South Florida is becoming a true destination for many artists who want to come work here and 20

I think it’s because Miami is such a global city and the transference from one culture to another and blending is a great laboratory for artists to explore different cultural and different means of mediums. The motto I use is “Art lives here”. For me reaching out to the community is saying, “Let’s bring all these artists together”. It doesn’t have to live in the convention center just 5 days out of the year. It lives every day of the year, 12 months out of the year. I think I am very fortunate as a native of San Francisco, were I was able to visit museums and galleries of people who had gone before me. Generations who had left that legacy. And I thought that was important that those of us that are here and who have leadership roles should bring that legacy to the county. I think truly, Palm Beach can become a beacon for innovation. Angela: What is the intention with Art Synergy? Lee Ann: We need to have citizens and entrepreneurs that are proactive. We have to stimulate those ideas. They are going to come from here. What Art Synergy posed for me, was the possibility for me bringing together like minds. We have all these creative communities growing and expanding and artists exploring all these creative mediums. How do we get this information out into the greater community? How do we get people into these beautiful redeveloped areas to enjoy this quality of life that art can bring them. Art Synergy is the inaugural year of the first county wide art walk taking place at 6 different arts districts throughout Palm Beach County. Coinciding with Art Palm Beach, Art Synergy will feature museum openings, galleries receptions, and lectures. Art Synergy is the first of its kind to introduce the public to the array of talent that lives in Palm Beach year round. For more information on Art Palm Beach visit artpalmbeach.com and more on Art Synergy and the 6 districts involved visit artsynergypbc.com.

Lea Vendetta is an accomplished tattoo artist who has been adorning skin professionally since 1996, with an impressive client list that has had her tattooing across the globe. The Paris, France born bombshell's impressive skill set and talents even landed her a spot in the inaugural season of Spike TV's Ink Master, where she had an opportunity to tattoo and compete against her peers, who also happened to be world's top tattoo artists. If that hasn't been enough to occupy her time, Lea can also add accomplished painter, model and musician to her repertoire. Though Lea has called South Florida her home for a number of years, her ventures have lead her to relocate to the west coast, Las Vegas to be specific. Art Hive Magazine had the opportunity to not only interview her but also to do an extensive photo shoot of her and have her be the cover girl of our Art Hive Indie Bride event. There seems to be no obstacle too large that this petite powerhouse can't conquer.

Lea: When I was about 13 years old a group of us went on a field trip to England and stayed there for about a week. It was common to stay with a family and we stayed with an older traditional English couple. The woman looked like Margaret Thatcher and her husband was a serious looking man who looked as if he had been in the military in the past. One day during the trip, my friend ran into the room, all excited, and said, "Oh my God! Did you see the old man!? I just saw him getting out of the shower and he's covered in tattoos! He was wrapped in a towel and he saw me looking at him and he ran into his room! I couldn't believe my eyes!" I was so intrigued by this because he looked so traditional and straight laced that it was hard for me to believe he was covered in tattoos. We ended up kind of spying on him for the rest of the trip to try to get a look at his tattoos and finally saw them the next day. In the eighties tattoos were definitely not considered normal and were still stereotyped as "bad" so it really surprised me that he looked like a regular, put together person with clothes on, and underneath he was covered in tattoos that he could show whenever he wanted. I though it was really cool that he had this good-guy, bad-guy thing going on. That was a small episode in my life that I can remember that really planted the seed for me as far as liking tattoos. After that, as I grew up, tattoos were kind of popping up everywhere. My friends were getting tattooed and the bands I liked had tattooed musicians. I remember noticing tattoos were being considered more as art around that time too. There was a designer I liked back then, John Paul Gaultier, who hired a model with a shaved head and a tattoo on her skull for one of his campaigns. I thought it was just so cool.
Jessie: So being that the tattoo field is very male dominated, do you feel that being a female tattoo artist is an advantage or disadvantage? Lea: Even though it’s a changing field, it’s definitely male oriented. As a woman, it was definitely hard. I guess it was harder because when I first started out I felt like my work and everything I was doing was more scrutinized. Because of that feeling, I do feel like it pushed me further to work harder and show others that I can kick ass and tattoo as well as a guy, and that there is no gender difference. It seems like with guys there is a lot of camaraderie, and as a woman, you don’t really feel that. Once you prove that you are a great artist and as good as a guy, they can’t say anything bad and the “club door” opens so to speak. On the other hand, when I started tattooing, there weren’t as many women doing it so people were surprised and intrigued. I encountered some people who didn’t want to be tattooed by a woman, but others were very open to it. Even though there are good and bad things that come from being a woman in the field, I’m the kind of person that see the glass half full. I always see the best in any situation. Jessie: You’re a very accomplished painter as well as a tattoo artist. Who would you say are your artistic influences? Lea: A lot of my influences happened at around the age of 14. I remember I was going to art school and taking a lot of art history classes. Even though the artists we were studying were impressive and interesting enough, they really didn’t “speak” to me. So, I ended up looking for other artists and influences on my own. One day I found a little book store somewhere in the South of France and found this book about a German painter named Otto Dix. His

A Tes Amours 2 art was so dark and intense. Well, in this book I found a painting he did of a woman in a sideshow of a circus who was completely covered in tattoos and I really connected with that. I was so impressed and really connected to him, especially because it was from the 1930’s and not something that would be considered normal. He has definitely been a large influence on me. From then on, I’ve followed his work and seen his full retrospective of artwork in shows all over the world. Jessie : You were on Spike TV’s Ink Master in it's inaugural season. Do you feel like being on the show was a positive step for your career? Lea: Overall, yes it was a positive experience and a great platform leading to other ventures. It was great national exposure too. It brought me a lot of attention that lead to offers in other avenues other than tattooing. It kind opened another dimension for me. Now, it’s not just about tattooing and painting. There are a couple of projects that I’m working on that I can’t quite talk about yet because they are still in their early stages, but the attention the show brought me helped facilitate these new projects to happen.

Lea: I’m moving to Las Vegas at the beginning of the new year. I’m still going to tattoo, paint and model, but now from Vegas. I'm also really excited to be working on a music project called Blck Str. When I was a teenager, I was always involved with musical projects that my friends would do. I would be on stage doing back up vocals and had so much fun. I'm not sure why, but I left the music behind and focused mostly on the visual arts. I feel like the music is calling 28

do it YOURSELF
This tutorial will make people do a double take. I GUARANTEE IT! In a past life I worked in the wedding business and know first hand just how expensive bouquets can be. When my best friend's wedding flower dreams looked like they were out of reach, my duties as the MOH and a spark of creativity lead me to create what I call Jessie's HYBRID BOUQUETS!
What You'll Need:
1 Bouquet Of Real Roses 4 Fake Bunches Hydrangeas ( Best You Can Afford) A Few Stems Of Random Flowers ( Best You Can Afford) Scissors,Vase, Floral Tape, Ribbon, Pins, Clipper ( Floral Clippers)
TIPS Go coupon crazy! Check out every place that sells the materials you are looking for and research the coupons and sales available, including both online shops and brick and mortar stores. Many craft and hobby shops also offer coupons via their apps for your smartphone. Many stores even allow you to combine coupons. This tip goes hand in hand with the next one... Recruit your friends. These flowers are for your big day, so you're going to want to buy the best artificial flowers you can afford. If you really want to save big bucks on making your wedding flowers, you're gonna need a little help from your friends. Recruit those closest to you to download those coupon apps on their smart phones, online and the like. Most craft stores have a limit to how many coupons you can use in a day, so having friends purchase select materials with you over time can mean BIG savings.
Remove everything off the fake stems.
Bunch hydrangeas together to make the base. Cut to desired size.
Look in unexpected places. Instead of hitting every floral shop in town, try going to places such as wholesale flower markets and green markets. I purchased all the real flowers I used for these hybrid bouquets from my local ice cream shop that just happened to sell wholesale flowers too! Practice, practice, practice. Nothing will make you feel more confident than doing a practice bouquet (or two).
Wrap bunch together tightly with floral tape. TUTORIAL PHOTOS Š SOFIE BROWN ; WEDDING PHOTOS Š BROOKE IMAGES

Position random stems. Cut . Wrap tightly.
Cut fresh roses underwater and remove thorns. Cut. Place. Wrap carefully and gently.
Pin ribbon, wrap around tightly and repin! DONE!
As soon as you're done making your bouquet, place it in water. You can even make it the night before and store in a fridge over night. Below are actual wedding photos of my beautiful best friend, Sofie, on her wedding day. She was originally quoted $250 dollars for a super simple ,stripped down version of the bouquet she wanted. I ended up making her bouquet as well as the bridesmaid bouquets for only $160. TOTAL. Good luck and here's to committing creatively!

indie film REVIEWS
by Alex Chimienti
KISS KISS BANG BANG
BLUE VALENTINE
What better indie film to watch for the holidays than the directing debut of one of my favorite writers, Shane Black. Arguably the best performances of Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer are on display in this fun “every day man gets pulled into insane action and suspense” kind of movie. What really sets this movie apart from others is the dark humor that Shane Black excels in. This movie can genuinely make you laugh, put you on the edge of your seat in suspense, and tug at your heart strings all in a matter of minutes. The cinematography is clean and fits the almost noir like vibe that the movie pokes fun at. I will warn this, the movie isn’t shy of its R rating so this may not be the holiday film meant for children to join in on. Above all else, the film is self-aware and playful with the hardboiled genre that it parodies. It knows that it has an audience and has fun with breaking the third wall and addressing the viewers as they follow the cast on a strange tale. It may not be a revolutionary experience but it is at least an enjoyable one. I’m happy to recommend this movie because it successfully offers a little bit of something for everyone. It has the tension of an action film without the unrealistic shoot outs and lame quips. Some dread and suspense mix for an engaging crime film that’s unpredictable in the good kind of way. Of course, the comedic chemistry of Kilmer and Downey alone is reason enough to give this movie a shot. Not to mention the Christmas theme thrown into the film that of course offers an interesting take on things.
If you’ve been keeping up with the Art Hive Indie Film Reviews you may remember The Place Beyond the Pines. Or not. It’s not like I put work into it or anything. Any who, this is an earlier film that director/writer Derek Cianfrance and actor Ryan Gosling had teamed up to create. It’s a romance drama film that jumps back and forth between a young couple in love and their marriage in disarray in present time. By all means this is a sad film and I say this with due respect. The sadness you experience while watching a film like this is cathartic, one that hits you hard but that none the less you can appreciate as beautiful. Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams portray an amazingly real couple that goes from being so madly in love to at wit’s end with each other. Chemistry and anti-chemistry aside, both actor and actress are insanely impressive with their work in this film. Likewise, the quality and harmony of the cinematography and lightning let you know exactly what emotion or theme each scene is getting at. By far one of the strongest components of the film is the score which was done by the indie rock band Grizzly Bear. Almost acting like an alarm, the smallest change in the music warns you exactly what you’re in for in the next scene or sequence. Like I said above, this film isn’t a cheery experience for everyone to laugh about. From the first kiss to making love, it wreaks of the essence that is a trip through a bad relationship. There isn’t a message to be delivered, just a surprisingly real look at things that makes for a remarkable film.
CHECK IT OUT IF:
CHECK IT OUT IF:
- You enjoy actively thinking while a film goes on and feeling like you’re a part of the discovery process. - You have an appreciation for a darker sense of comedy. - You’re a fan of either Val Kilmer or Robert Downey Jr. Even if you aren’t, this film may change your mind.
SKIP IT IF:
- You have a distaste of violence. By no means is the movie riddled with gore, it just deals with death and isn’t shy about the coldness of it. - Kind of tied into the point above, if you’re offended by a comedic view of some morbid things you should probably skip this. - You really don’t care for Robert Downey Jr. as he plays his usual snarky self.
42
ART HIVE MAGAZINE
- You enjoy an intense emotional ride that feels like a slice of life. - You’re a really big fan of movie soundtracks and scores. The work done for this film by both Grizzly Bear and Ryan Gosling himself are powerful. - You enjoyed The Place Beyond the Pines. It isn’t the same theme or feeling but it has the same essence and power as Gosling and Cianfrance are certainly a talented mix.
SKIP IT IF:
- You aren’t a fan of emotionally tragic stories. - You feel awkward with passionate sex scenes. The movie is a very intimate look at the fictional couple. - You like your movies to have a clear message. Of course anyone can take any meaning from a film but this one is more about the journey than a lesson.
