Precedents & Analogy

Wearable Chair

A series of foldable and wearable chairs. (The picture to the right is ten students of Petenna walking and exhibiting their chairs.) Once the chair is worn, it adds an extra ability to users , as with it they could sit and take a rest anywhere comfortably. And while providing a function, design can also becomes a manifestation of our stances.

Dragon

A dragon doesn’t exist in reality, it is an imagined and constructed creature by humans. Its morphological and biophysical characteristics all reflect people’s imagination of being strong, powerful and fearful. And strength, power and fear together are exactly the most efficient and through way of claiming personal space simply because they are making people unwilling to approach you.

Personal Space &Agenda

Our understanding of personal space space 1 Personal space is the domian where its owner feel safe and enjoy full isolation from exterior threats/dangers. 2 A person's intimacy with people can also be affected by existence.

Relationships between distance and forms of contacts with people.

And our agenda for this very design is to 1. Create a second skin that expresses our ideas about personal space and provides protection. 2. Use additional components to express territorial claim and enlarge personal space

2

Prototype

before Inflated

The wings develop backwards to avoid blocking peripheral view. (vision is also part of territorial claim)

Inflated

The wings become a portable/ integrated function once worn

Physical model of bone structure

4

Previous idea

The problem of this model was obvious that the bone structure does not serve the purpose of protecting user. Neither did it work well with the inflatable parts.

5

Improvement

well, the inflatable wings that we initially designed were not so technically achievable,so we've decided to recuce number of wings to two and make it fit with the sections.

Therefore in the final model we have given up a bone structure with unnecessary apertures and only keep two.

Through these two holes and their section structures, the inflatables are connected seamlessly.

6

Final Design

As most people are right handed, the protection for a user's left part of body may need to be enhanced.

Half of it would be exposed to strengthen the user's defensive ability.

These t w o horns (or wings) are meant to expand personal space and show off the user's power.

These sections will guarantee smooth connection between the inflatables.

Fabrication First of all we split the model into several parts, unrolled them seperately, and added tabs for them usinging Grasshoper.

4 Ivory Card Boards were used to generate the components with help of card cutter in the FabLab.
