Agenda setting

Identified Issues How to protect the existing vegetation in the site?

How to attract / redirect people passing by the site?

Allowing trees grow from within the building would make it more like an entension or even part of its surrounding natural environment and make the interior more interesting

How to make the project a sustainable one?

Compensation for the loss of vegetation in the site.

Identified Opportunities To exhibit historic background information. To make use of the uneven topographic pattern

In fact the site is not flat, although the slope is not quite visible but can be well perceived when you walk on it. Slight gradients is an inner dynamic of the site and can also give dynamic to the design

Free arrangement of space and volume can be used to achieve this.

To integrate the kiosk/ pavillion into its surronding environment

A traversing path makes the building intimate and pivotal to the site it locates in.

Visualising Agenda

The Interceptor is the car of Max in the movie Mad Max (1979). It is originally a XB GT Ford Falcon Coupe and has received several modifications for the film.

It looks pretty moderner than the cars in 70s as it tends to directly show its functions when the form cannot conceal them.

Visualising Agenda Continued As a matter of fact the site of South Lawn has gone through several major changes since 1854 (development in and after the World War II ,1950s and 60s as well as University master plan in the 1970s) Therefore, at least from my point of view the site is filled with uncertainty in the long term. So the design could learn from the nature of a car, its great mobility and flexibility. The trye is the most significant component of a car in its movement. Using a round shaped tyre to support the the car body is obviously better because rolling friction is genrally smaller than sliding friction or static friction thus reduce the loss of kinetic energy.

The Interceptor is a prominent example of modern manufacture. Its shell is formed by many panels, which allow more possibility of its form and shpe. If the shell is made of one single piece of iron or steel a,its resultant shape would be subject to many other parameters(resilence, stiffness, etc).

Cars generally depend solely on fosil fuels and generates air pollution. Which is not sustainable. But what if the gas emission could be recycled?

Visualising Agenda Continued Transfluent Glasses (car window)

A protected tree, incoprated into the pavilion. (sunroof)

Recycled tiimber to support the building. (tyre)

Rainwater flows along the groove between panels, and providing water for the fish pool. (exhaust)

The pavilion employs the idea of fabrication of a car with panels

Site Response

Where to put the design

As Francis suggests, an off-centre position would be more aggressive and competitive. Moreover, directly placing the project at the centre of th site without putting the building's relationship to its surroungding buildings or the vegetation around would cause serious problems.

Site Response

Where to put the design

The design locates in a sophisticated context. Every surrouding buiding of it has generated axis. The optimal position of the project should avoid blocking the axes. Tress should also be protected. (If logging is inevitable, refer to Page 1)

Optimal Location

Site Response Winds and Sun

The prevailing winds in Melbourne are westerlies and southerlies Therefore the roof maybe should expand southwards and westwards, bending down a bit to respond to the winds and provide shelter for people who do not have an unmbrella with them in rainny days..

In the winter people long for exposure to sunshine ,while in the summer ultraviolet can cause disease. So the actual depth of the room should be between Depth 1 and 2, namely 0.54 to 3.65 times the height of the room.
