celebrated every year, in order to recognise the role of the youth in the liberation of South Africa from the apartheid regime. We also celebrate this day in memory of all the youngsters who lost their lives during the protest.

In the movie “Higher Learning” actor Laurence Fishburne tells Oshea Jackson and Omar Epps that “..information is power. Without information one cannot seize power”. This publication is not about power, but it is about information.

June 16th is a national day dedicated to South Africa's youth. It commemorates the Soweto student uprising of 1976. On the morning of June 16th, a series of protest were taken to the streets by student from numerous Sowetan schools.

Since the vision for Overport Express came too life, it has always been about informing, educating, enlightening and uplifting. So this publication that you hold in your hand will be slightly different from what you are used to.

“On their pathway they met with heavily armed police. The police fired teargas on demonstrating students and later live ammunition.”

No photos of policemen with conscated contraband. No stories about murder and rape. No missing children’s photos. There’s enough of that going around already. We peddle information. Not sensation. Just information.

The protest began in the response to the introduction of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction in local schools. Between 3000 and 10 000 students participated in this protest. Some students raised posters that read “TO HELL WITH AFRIKAANS”.

e-commerce is now part of business in

OVERPORT Yes you read correct.

There is a tendency to think that mobile and retail technology can only be used to power big established companies. Wrong. It’s even easier to power up small companies with online technologies and applications these days. This is exactly what Durban Halaal Meats set out to prove in 2014 when they approached digital marketing

agency Fluence to not only develop a website for them, but also enable users of the website to buy meat and meat products right there on the website. This has created such a stir that the Durban Halaal Meats website got hacked in December last year and had to be rebuilt from the ground up. Since then the site is airtight and the company’s clients can now shop to their heart’s content.

The company’s website contains a beautifully arranged and categorised gallery of products from which buyers can choose what they want. They then choose how much they want to buy for and go through to checkout where they pay and have their purchases delivered in record time. This entire process can be facilitated on a desktop computer, a tablet or a smartphone. The company plans on taking this a few steps further in future, but when asked what those steps entail, owner Muhammed Ameer just smiles and let us know that we’ll be the rst to know when it happens. So there you have it people. You don’t have to leave your house to buy meat anymore. Just click, pay and voila. E-commerce. Right here in Overport.

Baking Pan an offical supporter of Taryn Leigh For the last 21 years the Hogg family of Sydenham have been taking care of their daughter Taryn Leigh (pictured) on their own with no assistance from anyone. It was only recently that it was discovered that Taryn Leigh will need some assistance in the form of a special wheelchair, and the family was not by means to purchase this much needed piece of equipment. So in stepped Ultimate Braai Master nalist Zane Jacobs - also from Sydenham - and organised a Fundraising Dinner in aid of purchasing the wheelchair. Zane and his team managed to sell the venue out at R200 per ticket. Come

the night of the event and in walks the group from Baking Pan. The owner’s wife then makes the announcement. Management at Baking Pan have taken it upon themselves to sponsor the chair in full. What this means is that whatever funds were raised could now be used for ongoing assistance and medical care. All in all, it was great seeing a business that operate in the Overport area acknowledge that their business would be nothing without the communities that support it.. and therefore they want to - as a business reciprocate.

Not surprisingly, the steps to prevent weight gain are the same as the steps to lose weight: daily exercise, a healthy diet, and a long-term commitment to watch what you eat and drink.

Obesity?

Stroke

What is Obesity? In general, overweight and obesity indicate a weight greater than what is considered healthy. Obesity is a chronic condition dened by an excess amount of body fat. A certain amount of body fat is necessary for strong energy, heat insulation, shock absorption and other functions. Obesity is best dened by using the body mass index. The body mass index is calculated using a person's height and weight. The body mass index (BMI) equals a person's weight in kilograms (Kg) divided by their height in meters (m) squared. Since BMI describes body weight relative to height. It is strongly correlated with total body fat content in adults. An adult who has a BMI of 25-29 is considered over weight, and an adult who has a BMI over 30 is considered obese.

Health Risks of overweight and obesity. Coronary heart disease- as your body mass index rises, so does your risk for coronary heart disease (CHD). CHD is a condition in which a waxy substance called plaque (plak) builds up inside the coronary arteries. These arteries supply oxygen rich blood to your heart. Plaque can narrow or block the coronary arteries and reduce blood ow to the heart muscle. This can cause a heart attack, chest pain or discomfort. Obesity can also lead to heart failure. This is a serious condition in which your heart can not pump enough blood to meet your body's need.

High Blood Pressure Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps blood. If this pressure rises and stays high over time, it can damage the body in many ways. Your chances of having high blood pressure are greater if you're overweight or obese.

Being overweight or obese can lead to a build-up of plaque in your arteries. Eventually, an area of plaque can rupture, causing a blood clot to form. If the clot is close to your brain, it can block the ow of blood and oxygen to your brain and causes stroke the risk of having a stroke rises as BMI increases.

Type 2 Diabetes Diabetes is a disease in which the body's blood glucose, or blood sugar, level is too high. Normally, the body breaks down food into glucose and then carries it to cells throughout the body. The cells use a hormone called insulin to turn the glucose into energy. In type 2 diabetes, the body's cells don't use insulin properly. At rst, the body reacts by making more insulin. Over time, however, the body can't make enough insulin to control its blood sugar level. Diabetes is a leading cause of early death, CHD, stroke, kidney disease, and blindness. Most people who have type 2 diabetes are overweight.

Sleep Apnea Sleep apnea is a common disorder in which you have one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while you sleep. A person who has sleep apnea may have more fat stored around the neck. This can narrow the airway, making it hard to breathe.

·Exercise regularly. You need to get 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity activity a week to prevent weight gain. Moderately intense physical activities include fast walking and swimming. ·

Eat healthy meals and snacks. Focus on low-calorie, nutrient-dense foods, such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Avoid saturated fat and limit sweets and alcohol. You can still enjoy small amounts of high-fat, high-calorie foods as an infrequent treat. Just be sure to choose foods that promote a healthy weight and good health most of the time. ·Know and avoid the food traps that cause you to eat. Identify situations that trigger out-of-control eating. Try keeping a journal and write down what you eat, how much you eat, when you eat, how you're feeling and how hungry you are. After a while, you should see patterns emerge. You can plan ahead and develop strategies for handling these types of situations and stay in control of your eating behaviour's.

It is imperative for a Landlord to know the Tenant’s rights in the South African context and not just the Landlord’s rights and obligations because: Ÿ

The Landlord will know when a Tenant is overstepping his/her rights. This may help speed up the eviction process. Such knowledge may stop a Landlord from abusing a Tenant’s rights unknowingly – a fact that may negatively effect any successful eviction. The Landlord can hold the Tenant to his/her obligations with conviction.

What are some issue you have with landlords or tenants? Let us know. OK hello@overportexpress.co.za

let’s explore some important questions that many landlords and tenants seldom know the answers to: What are a Tenant’s rights and obligations when a lease expires and the Landlord allows the Tenant to carry on staying on the South African property? Can the Tenant’s right to remain in a property be cancelled if the Landlord is selling that property? In general, a Landlord, as well as a Tenant, both have the right to give notice to each other, to cancel any lease agreement between them (see Rental Housing Act 1999, for more information.) Both the Landlord and Tenant must give at least one month notice to the other party when wanting to cancel the lease. (Rental Housing Act 1999) The Consumer Protection Act (CPA) gives additional rights to the Tenant by allowing them to cancel the lease provided 20 business days notice is given. HOWEVER should the above additional rights of the Tenant be exercised, the Tenant may be obligated to pay a “reasonable” cancellation fee.

No, the Tenant has the right to stay in the property until the lease expires whether there is a change in ownership or not (provided the Tenant’s obligations as per the lease are met). Is a Tenant obligated to use the rental property in a certain way? Yes, the Tenant can only use the leased premises for the purposes as stated in the lease agreement. Is it a Tenant’s right to sublet the leased premises?

When can a Tenant’s right to occupy a home be No, the Tenant must have the permission from the Landlord. affected? A Tenant continues to have the right to occupy his/her Can a Tenant make alterations to the property home, as long as he/she complies with the obligations without consent from the Landlord? stated in the lease agreement. No. Can the Landlord do anything to the property without the knowledge of the Tenant? Do you have more questions No, it is the Tenant’s right to be consulted on issues affecting the Tenant. For example: Repairs and renovations, lock changes etc.

A Clean Community Is A Beautiful Community Has anybody driven through Roslyn Avenue lately? Or down Mallinson Road. One need not look. The smell hits you like a ton of bricks on most days. Dumping is becoming a serious concern in our areas. More so on Roslyn Avenue opposite the entrance to College Road and by the pathway on Mallison Road. This is one way of destroying your own community. There are dumping sites available and members of the community should make use of it instead of exhibiting this unacceptable behaviour.

Dirt on our streets creates a playeld for stray dogs, causing an even bigger mess. It is not a pretty site for road users and visitors that come into the area. As fortune would have it, to every problem there is always a solution. For us that solution would be to make use of the landll site in Clare Estate. There are also recycling containers at Makro for unwanted everything, with specic containers for the different types of waste. But something that we may overlook in the bigger scheme of things is that what may be waste to you could can be useful to those less privileged. There are people from informal settlements standing outside the landll site waiting for your unwanted goods such as old furniture and clothing. So not only will you be a good Samaritan by not dumping your waste illegally, You’ll also be saving your community the embarrassment of having to look at dirt on our streets every day.

Let’s Talks Taxis

Who’s really providing a service to who? good. They can come and go with ease.

Is your journey to work or school every morning a nail biting, tummy twisting and nerve wrecking affair?

Many people in the above-mentioned communities depend on the local taxi service to attend to work, shops, doctors or just to visit family and friends. And just like every other business, the customer's satisfaction should come rst.

Great question yes? The local taxi association provides the Sydenham, Overport, Asherville, and Springtown communities with a very vital service. They get us to work every day. They get our kids to school. And the aunties that shop on Grey Street have it

However, it has been noticed that taxi drivers are not really too concerned about service. All they seem to care about is money. This can be seen in the way they overload their taxis at the swimming pool after 5pm or when they load on Berea Road

on their way to town. This is becoming very common, and it leaves many passengers sitting uncomfortably whilst paying the full fare.

Something else we’ve noticed is how friends of the drivers would occupy the front seat and only jump out when the back is full, or sit there for the entire trip. This means someone jumping off halfway has to go right to the back and battle when they jump off. Thirdly, speeding is a very serious issue. It endangers innocent lives, all just to make a few extra rands.

Then senior citizens who travel by taxi are not being respected. Drivers and “condais” speak to them anyhow. Not fair guys. You cannot speak to an old person like they are lighties and expect your full R7 for the trip. If only taxi drivers can realise that without passengers they don’t have jobs. We at Overport Express would like to invite the community and the taxi association to talk to us and help come up with solutions to these issues. Send your thoughts to us via email on hello@overportexpress.co.za LETS ALL ARRIVE ALIVE.

This stereotype of professions could have originated from the poor. The is the type of parents who are really forceful in their children's pursuit of rst class professions. They do not hide their expectations. They pressurise their children to do well in school and unless results are stellar they are punished. They need their children to be the best in the community to preserve their name and reputation.

Education is vital in every child's life. Both parents and educators play a very important role in the education process of a child's life “But mum I don't want to go to school!” are words that are heard all too often around the world. Why sit in a classroom learning things, when you could be outdoors having fun? Knowledge is power, and power is unfortunately something that is hard to come by these days. High school education is exceptionally important for proper human development, but what about tertiary education? Is a college degree really necessary, and if so is it worth the immense amount of debt, that many of us are in? Education importance is a subject that is up for debate to many, but it can be hard to deny the importance of knowledge in everyday life. It is

about understanding right from wrong and having the knowledge you need to stay aoat in today's society. Education allows us to process the information we receive on a daily basis and make conclusions and inferences based on what we already know. It is all too common to see parents “forcing” their children to study something they want instead of what the children want to study themselves. If dad is a doctor and mum is a nurse that does not automatically mean the child needs to go into the medicine eld too. Every child has their own dreams and talents. Instead give the child the chance and choice to be an individual and follow their dreams. In some cases parents have a circle of

This becomes more important than the child's happiness and satisfaction. Parents often back up their behaviour by saying, I know what is good for you, and that is becoming a doctor or lawyer and earing lots of money.

031 207 4095 hello@overportexpress.co.za

Gradually this teaches the children to be competitive in their approach to life, which is detrimental to their abilities to nd peace and work cooperatively in the future. Giving your child your child the choice to study does not mean, the parents do not care about the child's welfare, but as long as the child's raised to think ethically, they have done their job well. All they should want is for their child is to be happy and satised with their jobs. In order to do that the parents will support their children all the way in the pursuit to happiness.

Do you know anyone following a career path they did not really choose themselves? Share the story with us. hello@overportexpress.co.za

Psoriasis Psoriasis is a common skin condition that can affect anyone; although it's more common in people between the ages 15 and 35, according to the National Psoriasis Foundation, if you have Psoriasis your skin cells grow faster than normal.

Refresh

What causes Psoriasis? Research has been unable to identify a singular cause for psoriasis but studies suggest psoriasis is an autoimmune disease it begins in the immune system. The result of your immune system is overreacting to stimuli. In a properly-fuinctioning immune system, T-Cells, a kind of white blood cell, protect the body against infection and disease by identifying and destroying foreign material. With psoriasis, T-cells overreact, mistaking healthy skin cells for dangerous ones, and set off a chain of unneeded immune system responses.

Banks are Dead Long live Banking

We take the holistic approach in ensuring your well-being in mind, body, soul and spirit.. through massage therapy .

ARE BANKS A SAFE HAVEN FOR YOUR MONEY? OR IS IT JUST ANOTHER BUSINESS? When I was 19 years old I started my rst job. I subsequently opened my rst bank account with United Bank, and this was way before employers started depositing money into bank accounts. I opened my account because I was going to start saving for my future, so I religiously kept my payslip closed on Fridays until I got home, gave my mother her half of my money and my rst move after that would be to deposit R20 with United.

It’s now 2015 and as I look back at my tenure as a client of United and later ABSA over a period of 18 years, I cannot think of one occasion on which I was invited into a consultant’s ofce during the 3 years that I saved R20 per week (that’s just over 3K) or ever after that to ask me if I’d be interested in any of their other savings and investment instruments. I even held unit trusts for a few months, but had to cash out to buy second year university text books.

I did this religiously for the 3 years I worked in that factory and it came to a screeching halt when I enrolled at university to study toward a Bcom degree. I did not do any banking, transacting or saving for the next 3 years, but I stayed with United through their transition to ABSA and only left the bank in March of 2010.

Banking got a lot more sophisticated over the years, and monitoring clients’ transacting habits, trends and patterns are so much easier these days with the technologies in place. It would be the easiest thing in the world to have a look at who saves most frequently, who deposits more than they withdraw, who’s addicted to the ATM, who transacts over the counter all the time etc. and offer these people better ways to bank so that they can benet from all the services the bank offers. No, they’d much rather jump at the opportunity to offer you an overdraft, a loan, revolving credit and every other instrument that the bank can use to suck you dry.

I’d like to point out that my saving of R20 per week over a period of 3 years was not a result of anything the bank did. That was all me. Having grown up so poor that at one point I only had one pair of shoes which I wore to school and church ONLY (had to go barefeet after school everyday, the whole day on Saturday and two thirds of every Sunday), I wasn’t going to let that happen to me ever again.

In 2004 I owed Standard Bank just over R1000 because I was dumb enough to borrow money from a micro nance company named Blue Sky Trading/Leona Finance here in Durban. These people somehow cloned my debit card and could transact on my account, which they did – racking up that R1000 in bank charges I ended up owing Standard Bank. I paid the bank that money and when I applied to open a business account, I was declined because of that R1000 I owed and paid. I mean how difcult would it have been to see that I paid the bank back what I owed, putting me in the “good books” once again?

Now we have Capitec Bank, that offers better banking services. But in contrast, their ATMs in Durban have the longest queues you’ve ever seen at any ATM. And as great as that is, they too don’t really encourage saving or provide better education on saving, investment etc. This despite the fact that 90% of their clients open a savings account. The only conclusion I can draw is that the best way to save is the old fashioned way – under the mattress. Even back then banks did not encourage saving, but tried to some extent to project themselves as institutions that facilitate saving or provide a safe haven for your savings. These days nothing in their branding says anything about WE WANT YOU TO SAVE MONEY. Nope. It’s all about punting different types of accounts with different types of fees attached to each one. Looking back to when I was a factory worker, there was never a problem with getting your money in a payslip. Banks fought tooth and nail to get weekly wages of the working class (the poor of this country) paid into bank accounts so that they can get their hands on some of that money as well - as minuscule an amount as they can get from each individual. And still they have never encouraged this category of client to do the very thing we think banks exist for – SAVING. Do not be fooled. There is no such thing as a savings account. It doesn’t matter what the branding or the positioning statement says. Your bank is a business. Not a safe haven for your money.

Top 10 You’ve probably been part of the Android vs iOS debate. Or the “why must iPhones be so expensive when they’re made in China” argument. Or perhaps you’ve wondered why can’t these new smartphones have the battery life of a Nokia 3310. That means you have probably also wondered which are the best smartphones in the market right now.

smartphones in the world RIGHT NOW

In 4th place is Samsung again - with the Galaxy S5. Although a newer generation is available, the S5 still packs a punch. Being able to change your phone battery yourself and give your phone more storage capacity are rare gifts in the information age. And with a new generation available, this one shouldn’t be too expensive.

Well, wonder no more. We’ve settled on a list of 15 smart phones, but because of space we’ll give you only the Top 10.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 is number one. Looks alone set this little gadget miles ahead of its competitors, with its gorilla glass bac and front with metal underneat to round off its “blingola”. Samsung has also done some work on the camera stabilising function and increased aperture for stunning photo taking.

The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact is up next. It’s tiny compared to most other devices like it but has a lot to offer. It’s waterproof for starters. And the feature to beat all features.. You can go up to 2 whole days on a full battery. Heaven for heavy data users if you ask me. (I wonder what the iPhone users say about that)

And second to last. Samsung again with the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. With this device they brought their Agame in the phablet space. This device features looks, speed, battery life and a great camera. And the cherry on the top. Samsung again at number 10. This time with their Galaxy Note Edge. It has most of the same features as the Note 4 but adds the pizzazz of a curved edge display.

Buckle up! We’re ready for take-off

Next is the new LG G4. We hear it’s got a camera that makes the S6 sit up and pay attention. Screen resolution is also a game changer and this little number shows you everything in HD. Believe that. Some may call this one “the turtle” because it also comes in a leather back option. Now there’s practical if you’ve never seen it up close.

LG - like Samsung also has another horse in this race with the LG G3 at number 8. This might still be the best phone LG ever made. It has a never before seen high resolution screen and it’s camera is mad fast as well. All this however knocks the battery life down a notch.

There they are. The cream that rises to the top. You’ll obviously know what we’re talking about if you own any one of these smartphones. In 5th place is Apple’s moneyspinner - the iPhone 6. Faster than any phone Apple had before, nice and bigger for apps and other screen stuff, and it’s a real beauty.. aesthetically pleasing. very pleasing. redening the smartphone. The Motorola Moto G - not very popular in South Africa - is 6th. This gadget is made for people who want things to happen on their phone at lightning speed. It comes in an LTEcompatible version and has tolerable battery life. In 7th place is a manufacturer that seems to have lost its way - HTC. Their latest gadget, the HTC One M9made the number 7 spot. It’s a beautiful device - internally and externally. Who can resist a 20megapixel camera ?

TO EACH HIS OWN. We may not agree on which phone is really better, but we agree on this. Life is so much better with a smartphone than without.

How can Tech-Know: Getting technology improve business? Started A lot of young people are starting businesses, and many more aim to do so at some point. But many do not know what the starting point should be, or what they need to have in place to start. We have put together a checklist for you. It’s only a list. Nothing more. Read and let us know if you can add anything to this list.

You need the following: A product or service. How else would you be in business if you don’t have something people want and are willing to pay for Ÿ A name. Naming your business could be the most important thing you do to get started. Ÿ Ethos/Mantra. Put your business’ reason for existing or what it stands for in words. Ÿ Unique Domain name. If you’re serious about business, just stop using Gmail as your business email already. Get real business email @yourcompany.co.za Ÿ Internet. Get a high speed internet connection. Ÿ Email. get email on that unique domain of yours. Ÿ Logo. This will be your unique identier across all the marketing channels you use. Ÿ Business Cards. Don’t let anyone tell you that they’re no longer necessary because you have WhatsApp. Ÿ Website. This is of course something you do when you’re ready, unless you want people to buy what you sell - from day one. Ÿ Personal Social Media. Make sure you and everyone in the business has these. Ÿ Business Social Media. A multi-platform online presence for the business. Ÿ Company Prole. Kinda like the CV of your business. You WILL need this. Ÿ Business Registrations. You will need this if you are looking to do business with established companies. Ÿ Accountant. Very necessary. Someone you trust. Ÿ Invoicing software. Unless you like struggling Ÿ Legal counsel (depends.. on many things) Ÿ Mentor. Or some form of mentoring. Ÿ Relationship of Accountability. These work wonders for keeping you sharp and on your toes. Ÿ Ongoing education (online or ofine) Ÿ Someone that can create content for your business. Trust me on this one. Ÿ

There are probably innite ways that technology can improve your business. Some take large investments in time and money to implement while others can be implemented in minutes and cost absolutely nothing. Other ways that you might use technology to improve your business are specic to your business or your industry. For his article, we focus on those things that can be applied to many businesses quickly and effectively.

Software is one of the best ways to harness technology to improve your business. It's relatively cheap to acquire compared to physical products, and it can have an immediate, signicant and positive impact on your business. There are millions of software solutions available, and if you can't nd what you're looking for custom solutions can be quickly developed and implemented. There is almost certainly a software solution that could improve the operation of your business or its products and services. VOIP (Voice Over IP) is a great technology to take advantage of. VOIP replaces the majority of hardware involved in a standard phone system with a server running software. VOIP software solutions provide tons of features and innite congurations not available with a standard phone system. There are many enterprise grade VOIP solutions available, with costs ranging from free to tens of thousands of rands. You can convert a small ofce to full VOIP by using an

existing server and a few thousand rands in equipment.

Wiki is a funny name, but a powerful technology for collaboration. Whether you have one on your intranet, website or both, a wiki allows you to share knowledge in a very accessible, yet controllable, way. Everyone in your company could share useful information like process manuals, news, product ideas, etc. on your intranet. You and your customers could share support information and user experiences on your website. Wikis are simple to add to any intranet

or website and increase the knowledge and relationships between employees and customers. Blogs are another powerful technology for sharing information, though with less of a focus on collaboration. Blogs "push" information to readers, they're kind of a "stream" of information. Blogs can be useful for internal information, but provide even more value externally. A blog can bring more return visitors to your website by providing new interesting or exciting information. You keep complete control of the blog's content, but they should be written from a more personal perspective than press

releases. A blog can become another medium for communicating with your customers. One that keeps your customers interested, excited, and coming back.

Open Source software encompasses a large set of software solutions that are freely available to use, modify and distribute. Many of these solutions can be quickly implemented by businesses to improve their productivity and offer more value. In fact, there are powerful and mature Open Source software solutions for all of the technologies mentioned above. Also, businesses can enhance their products and services with little investment by incorporating Open Source software. There is Open Source software for many business tasks from administrative to production, all of which you can begin using now at no cost. Technology can improve your business in many ways, many of which you probably haven't even thought of yet. However, technology can be expensive. Software is a relatively cheap form of technology that businesses can use to improve every facet of the business. Open Source software is the most accessible software, allowing businesses to continuously innovate and stay competitive with very little investment.

MAN POWER: How to choose a hairstyle that’s right for you.

hairstyle, there are a few other inuential factors to b e t a k e n i n t o consideration:

Maintenanc e – consider how much time you’re willing to put into your hairstyle every day.

Choosing a new hairstyle can be both intimidating and exciting. But it can also lead to the most unbelievable transformations. Even for a man who prefers to avoid complications, a new hairstyle could be the perfect way to embrace change.

Products – It is important to determine how much time and money you are willing to invest in your hairstyle.

A hairstyle is something utterly personal, something that should always reect both your personality and your aesthetic, and above all something that should boost your condence and make your overall look feel complete. If you don’t know where to start, and even if you do, we’re going to help you experience change from a different perspective. Choose the right hairstyle for your face shape Before even beginning to search for inspiration, you should start off the selecting process by determining the shape of your face. This will help you make an informed decision about which hairstyle is bound to suit you best. Acknowledge your hair Acknowledging your hair is mandatory whenever you’re contemplating a new hairstyle. The texture, density and movement are the ones that will help your stylist determine what he/she can do with your hair. Hide your flaws, play up your strengths There are hairstyles out there able to hide your aws, and than there are those which are able to play up your strengths, but why choose between the two when you can have both?

Other influential factors Before proceeding in choosing your new

Stick with something basic if you want a hairstyle that will have you out of the bed and out the door in a matter of minutes, and choose a more ambitious style only if you’re willing to spend time and money keeping it looking its best. Personal style – A haircut should be able to complement both your personal

style and your personality, so think about the kind of clothes that are currently building your wardrobe before making the leap. Don’t opt for a sharp look if your style screams edgy or unconventional. Look for inspiration Looking for inspiration is what we all tend to do rst. Sometimes is that same wave of inspiration the one awakening the desire to try out something new. But indulging into this step only after you have dealt with the previous ones, will probably save you time. P i c k a g r e a t stylist A great hairstylist doesn’t have t o necessarily come from the most expensive salons, although if the fame precedes him that’s exactly where you’ll be nding him. Either you’re ready to spend a little fortune on your new hairstyle, or you’d rather pay a visit to the good old barber, make sure the person in charge of your hair is someone whose opinion you value. The ultimate decision should always belong to you.

ninety percent of what you say does not come out of your mouth it comes from the look and feel of your business card, the autosignature on your email, the signage on your building, the words on your press release, what people feel when they visit your website, or the posts on your Facebook fanpage. Sometimes even your ad in a print publication.

Let us help you make that ninety percent count.

What is..

RAMADAAN

For our non-Muslim readers who have Muslim friends, relatives, neighbours or colleagues, and you’ve always wondered what really happens during this period. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and a time when Muslims across the world prepare themselves for a month long fast. This fast takes place during the hours of daylight.

How do Muslims keep Ramadaan? Muslims strengthen their faith by praying more or reading the Qur'an more during this time. Many Muslims will attempt to read the entire Qur'an at least once during the month of Ramadaan. Many also attend special services in mosques during which the Qur'an is read.

the fast will often be broken by different Muslims families coming together to share in an evening meal.

Eid-ul-tr The end of Ramadan is marked by a big celebration called “Eidul-tr” - the festival of the breaking of the fast. Muslims are not only celebrating the end of fasting, but thanking ALLAH for the help and strength that he gave them throughout the previous month to help them practice self –control. The festival begins when the rst sight of the new moon is seen in the sky. There are special services outdoors and at mosques, processions through the streets and of course a special celebratory meal, eaten during daytime - the rst daytime meal

Because Ramadan is a time to spend with friends and family, the fast will often be broken by different Muslims families coming together to share in an evening meal. Fasting is intended to help teach Muslims self-discipline, selfrestraint and generosity. It also reminds them of the poor, who may rarely get to eat well. Muslims also take this time to refocus their attention on God and practise self-sacrice. Ramadan is much more than not eating and drinking. It is common to have one meal (known as the suhoor) just before sunrise and another (known as the iftar) directly after sunset. Because Ramadan is a time to spend with friends and family,

Muslims will have after one month. Eid is also a time of forgiveness and making amends. During Eid-ul-tr, Muslims dress in their nest tradition clothes, give gifts to children and spend time with family and friends. At Eid it is obligatory to give a set amount of money to charity to be used to help poor people buy clothes and food so they too can celebrate. The team at Overport Express would like to wish the Muslim communities of Overport, Asherville, Sprineld, Sydenham and Sherwood well during the fast.
