Of the 25 homes the Sarasota design team worked on last year, one most certainly stands out: the home of Charley and George Turon.

“Our home is based on the Modena, which we modified, substantially, to reflect how we live,” says Charley. Her husband George adds, “We liked the presentation of the Modena. It was a beautiful palette for us to put our touches on.”

“The Turons were coming from a traditional residence, and originally were thinking about a transitional ambiance for their new home,” says designer Julia Siska. “As we worked together, their ideas morphed into a different, fantastic vision.”

The vision may have begun to shift when George discovered an innovative glass application from Canada. The ThinkGlassTM countertop on the kitchen island–a single piece of custom-made glass with LED lighting that transforms the color of the glass to match the mood of the moment–was a signal to Julia of the more contemporary, even edgy, direction the couple was headed.

The final result is nothing short of spectacular. The home is dramatic yet comfortable. Open yet private.

Soaring yet intimate. Compelling materials, amazing features, and creative touches have coalesced into an incredible residence.

Charley and George expanded the Modena floor plan in every direction to create the home of their dreams. “We only added 500 square feet,” says George, “but that changed the whole feel.”

The resulting home is quite large–well over 6,000 square feet–yet Charley promises that each room of the home is used. Consider the three bedrooms in the main house in addition to the master suite; the Turons had a plan to make sure each of the rooms was functional. One is reserved as a true guest suite. Another serves as a very nicely appointed fitness room. And the third holds a family treasure: a Steinway grand piano that’s been in the family since 1892. Family photos and George’s childhood toy box, a hand-painted beauty from Germany, personalize the room even further.

The den is another example of making the most of every room’s potential. The raised level is all-business, with a handsome desk and a fullwall credenza and bookshelves. A few steps down from the office level, the design team created a comfortable seating area where the couple can enjoy movie-watching in a cozy setting.

With the exception of a few carefully chosen treasures and family heirlooms, everything in the home is new, and a result of the collaboration between the Turons and the Design Studio team. As the Turons worked with the Design Studio to select their home’s finishes and fixtures, it became an easy decision to also trust the Arthur Rutenberg Homes design team with furnishing this home.

“Some designers bring their vision to your design,” says George. “This team brought their skills and talent to our vision.” Adds Charley, “They understood us and what we liked. It was very easy to work with them.”

The Turons have high praise for the entire Nelson Homes team, and especially appreciate the Arthur Rutenberg Homes concierge concept.

“It was wonderful to have someone to follow up on details, to take notes, and to schedule meetings,” says Charley.

The luxury of having designers who are so intimately acquainted with your home plan is another plus.

“Our clients love the concept of the Design Studio,” says Julia. “No one knows their home plan, and how it works, better than we do.”

“And,” she adds, “our clients don’t have to pound the pavement to make their selections. They can see their home start to come together, room by room, right here.”

Julia personally chooses every item displayed in the Design Studio, guided by her insight into the local market and a keen understanding of the clientele who builds with Arthur Rutenberg Homes. The result is a thoughtfully curated collection of everything from tiles to textiles. And, when a client has an idea that is out-of-the-box, the design team can easily accommodate the request, sourcing products, materials, and even specialized craftsmen and installers if necessary.

That willingness and ability to work outside of the box came in handy with the Turon residence.

“This home is different than anything we’ve ever done before,” says Julia.

From sourcing a unique backsplash for the casita kitchen to working with a specialized installer for the concrete countertops, the design team enjoyed the challenge of helping the Turons bring their dream home to life.

It helped that the Turons had previous homebuilding experience, and were good decision-makers. Still, this project was a big one. As Julia guided Charley and George through the myriad of selections to be made, design assistant Amanda Knorr entered the information into the computer in real-time. Making the bigger decisions like flooring and cabinetry (in this case, an abundance of warm hickory floors and deep chocolate-toned cabinetry) set the groundwork for selecting the details like window coverings and lighting. Julia likens it to

When Julia and Amanda complete a design session, they take the client on a visual walk-through of all the selections, room by room. Every element is reviewed and confirmed, working with swatches and samples displayed on the selection wall and cross-referencing with a printout of all the chosen items. For Charley and George, the review took a bit longer than usual; the typical Arthur Rutenberg home design plan results in a printout of some 36 pages of detailed information…the Turons’ printout ran to 50 pages.

Once the Turons finalized their decisions, the third member of the Design Studio team, Kristen Colin, sprang into action to coordinate purchasing and to ensure everything arrived on schedule. Her role is to address any issues, from supplier timelines to damaged goods to anything and everything else that might need attention.

“When we put together a full project,” says Julia, “it’s all hands on deck.”

All along the way, the design team provided the Turons confidence in their decisions, and assurance that everything would go smoothly.

“Our clients often tell us how easy we made the process,” says Julia.

The more time you spend in the home, the easier it is to believe when Charley claims, “Building this home was great fun, from clearing the ground to the day they handed us the keys. It’s been fun, and we are so pleased.”

The home’s whimsical and delightful touches–from the hand-applied torn paper application on the master bedroom ceiling to the television hidden behind a bathroom mirror–are balanced by a ton of very smart and practical systems and ideas.

The Modena is a smart home, with an entire room dedicated to the electronics that control everything from energy to the sound system. The Turons’ home is also very green. Their Arthur Rutenberg Homes builder, Nelson Homes, Inc., builds green as a standard.

“In this caliber home, it is expected,” says franchise owner Derek Nelson. “We are always trying to exceed customer and industry expectations.”

The result is a home that does more than offer the Turons the comfort and savings of energy efficiency; it’s also about responsibility.

“Being mindful of the earth is the right thing to do,” says Derek.

“Livable” is the word that comes to mind in every way, from the comfort provided by the home’s technology, to the delight provided by its design. For instance, the dining area includes two full-height wine coolers for easy access while entertaining, while the casita’s walk-in wine room houses the balance of the Turons’ wine collection. The dining area’s built-in buffet also accommodates some family heirlooms that see more use now that they are right at hand.

“This is where I keep my mother’s sterling silver, as well as my mother’s and my grandmother’s china,” says Charley.

The flow of the home is also conducive to entertaining.

“We have a large event coming up,” says Charley, “and normally I wouldn’t be so relaxed about having so many people. But here the flow allows you to be a part of it.”

From appetizers at the bar, to dinner at the nearby table, to last-minute kitchen prep, hosts and guests stay connected. That’s part of the charm of the home; it may be very spacious, but the open plan fosters togetherness, and the size never overwhelms.

“You don’t feel like you’re lost in the structure,” says George.

“We’ve seen homes that are large, with space just for the sake of space,” he adds. “That’s not us.”

On the other hand, there is plenty of room to provide privacy when guests come to stay. The casita allows guests to follow their own schedule, rising for an early breakfast perhaps, or reading or watching TV late into the night, without interrupting the household routine. Julia and her team also made sure the casita gets plenty of use even when guests aren’t around, furnishing the casita’s main living area with a pool table, plus multiple screens for watching sports.

Creamy white leathers, polished stainless steel, sleek ceiling fans, and touches of turquoise pull together a fresh and sophisticated look throughout the home. Complementing the stunning interiors are the views from every angle.

Perfectly placed windows, full-height glass walls that slide away out of sight, as well as the clear view screens enclosing the outdoor living area, maximize the Turons’ enjoyment of their surroundings. “The views make it like each day you’re looking at a different painting. And at night, the stars here are just amazing,” says Charley.

Charley and George moved into their home in December 2015, with the goal of being unpacked and organized in two weeks. Because the Design Studio team organized the selection, purchase, and delivery of the home’s furnishings, move-in went off without a hitch.

Making the process easy–and even fun–truly pleases the design team; Julia reflects further on what contributes to their sense of fulfillment on a job well done.
