North Branch Community High Rise Residential
| Chicago, IL
Aug 2017 - Dec 2017
The North Branch Community is a project located at the north branch of the Chicago river and the developer is aiming to transform a former steel factory into a mix-use space with commercial, retail and residential facilities. The goal is to extend the 606 walking trail under expressway to termitate on the site, develop the riverwalk and a new water taxi stop and foster a healthy community area for the residents and the neiborhoods around the site. Land Size: 259,084 Program: - 35% of site reserved for open space: 90,680sf - Commercial: 800,000 sf - Residential: 200,000 sf - Retail: 70,000 sf - Parking requirements: 0.5 spaces / 1 residential unit, 1 space / 5k sf commercial space
Site Strategy Because everyone comes to a place with distinc interests or purposes, so we want to distribute them towards their program of interest in the most direct way. We established two main roads to connect the site with the streets and the 606 trail and then connected all the other programms with pedestrian routes serving as visual cues for indication of access.
Building Concept For the residential building design, we focused mainly on solving a problem generated by the highrise way of living. According to research, highrise residential buildings significantly increased the chance of interaction between people but lowered their chance of establishing meaningful connections between each other. Our intend is to reconnect people by establishing interest groups.

We established amenity spaces that support five different types of activities. These public floors divide the linear building into different sections. People living in the buildling could be able to circulate through the building core towards their destined space of activity. They are then able to establish meaningful connections with each other in these common spaces by sharing the same experience on activities they all enjoy.

The ground floor of the residential building is split with a walk way which connects the commercial garage with the riverside restaurants. Two staircases are located at the end of the walk way which lead toward the second floor gallery and bar area. Each residential floor includes one bedroom, two bedroom and three bedroom apartments. This makes sure that the building is populated with a diverse range of family typologies. Curved balconies extend from the living room and bedroom of each apartment and provide the occupant with great views of the Chicago river.

Carpenter’s Residency Artist Residency and Gallery
| Blacksburg, VA
Jan 2017 - May 2017
The project is located to the East side of Virginia Tech campus on Draper road. The building is intended to function as a residency for a carpentry artist. It also features a personal woodshop and an artist showroom. The Building was designed to welcome students and visitiors to look at the artist’s work and learn about wood working. The design put a lot of attention on the visual integration with the surrounding buildings on Draper road, at the same time maintaining the circulation between the parking lot on the east and the road on the west.
Design Process I started the design process by focusing mainly on the distribution of the three main programs: residency, woodshop and the gallery space. The residency was designed to be on the upper level considering privacy and sound isolation. The placement of the woodshop and the gallery maintained the cross ventilating nature of the site at the same time enabled the visitors to access the building with visual satisfaction.
After the programing was set, I refined the design of the building with construction and tectonic hierarchy in mind. Weathering steel was selectied as the facade material due to its visual charateristics and its ability to bend. The project shows a very clear hierarchy in the use of materials and a contrast between heavy and light.

CLT Structure Apartments Apartments
| Brooklyn, NY
Aug 2016 - Dec 2016
The project is located in downtown Brooklyn, NY. We focused on using CLT wooden panels as the main structural system of the building. The design of the apartment complex aimed mainly on combining the warmth of the material and the occupants’ experience. Structural integrity and circulation are also important in this project. A structural system combined of CLT panels and mass timber is used to maximum assembly efficiency.

Ground Floor Plan
The site is adjacent to four similar apartment complexes. The parking lot of the apartment building is integrated with the parking lots of the other four apartments. The design of the parking lot also featured a big lightwell with bridges spanning on top. Sufficient access to sunlight allows plants to grow in the underground parking lot.
Parking Section
Section Oblique
The street level of the apartment complex is open to the public. Walk ways penetrate the structural walls on the North - South axes, leaving arched openings in the walls. Masonry was used as a facade material to prevent the laminated wood from weathering. People could be able to socialize in the public area, and the four apartment units are lofted above the street.

Structural Diagram
The sturcture of the apartment building is a combination of timber beams and CLT panels. Structural CLT was chosen because it is fast to assemble, structurally stable, has great fireproofing abilities and also yields a warm sense to the occupants in the interior space.
South Facing Apartment - Dinning Space
The apartment complex consist of four individual apartments, each as a two stories apartment. The two apartments facing south also featured a double height dinning space, allowing daylight to reach deeper in to the interior.

Level 3&5
The wall which divides the balconies of the two apartments is rotated to allow morning sun to penetrate into the bedroom on the north side of the building. It also reflects sunlight deeper into the second floor living room during the daytime. The strategy aimed at reducing glare and minimizing solar heat gain.
Pizzeria Restaurant | Blacksburg, VA Jan 2016 - Mar 2016
The site of the pizzeria is in Blacksburg, Virginia, on the East side of Virginia Tech’s Campus. The design is inteded to correspond with the Moss Art Center which is across from the street. Facing the entrance of the art center, the pizzeria attracts costomers with its appealing exterior appearance and tasty wood baked pizzas. The design is a bold attempt with colors on both the exterior and the interior space, aiming to generate a welcoming and easy setting for the customers. The pizzeria featured a kitchen with two wood fired hearths which also serve as the icon of the restaurant.

A&S Architecture Design Internship | Beijing, China May 2017 - Aug 2017
During my internship at A&S Architecture, I worked mainly on the schematic designs of an apartment complex and a hotel in Xian, China. I developed Sketchup models for rendering, prepared documents and drawings for client presentations and developed high-rise residential building floor plans in AutoCAD. I also participated in design discussion meetings and construction process meetings.
Thank you.
