meet the saskatoon children’s choir The Saskatoon Children’s Choir was founded in 1996 by its artistic director, Phoebe Voigts. In the years since, they have developed a reputation for their musical sound, creative spirit and commitment to excellence. The choir performs a wide variety of compositions with a particular emphasis on classic literature, international folk music and Canadian works. The choir is sponsored and nurtured by the Saskatchewan Music Educators Association. The choir regularly appears as guest artists of the SSO and has accepted invitations to perform with the Calgary Girls Choir, Prairie Virtuosi, the Greystone Singers, the Barenaked Ladies and folk singers Valdy and Connie Kaldor. Recording credits include four CDs, feature performances on radio and tv, and the CBC Christmas CD, A Gift of Song, with baritone Henri Loiselle. The Saskatoon Children’s Choir believes that music crosses all cultures and borders, that all children can be a voice for peace and that they have an obligation to contribute to building a future of hope for the world. From 2000-2002 the SCC supported the International Campaign to Ban Landmines through concerts, education platforms and signatures. This project, endorsed by Nobel Laureate Jody Williams, included a performance tour of France and Spain, the release of the CBC CD, Fields Interrupted, and a guest performance at the Canadian/American International Peace Gardens. In 2005 and 2006 the choir performed the children’s opera Brundibar in Saskatoon, Regina and Winnipeg. This opera was first performed in 1942 by the children of the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp. The choir has twice been awarded Kathaumixw’s Elmer Iseler Award (2000 and 2004) for best performance of a Canadian work. Other awards include First Place (folk) from the International Choral Kathaumixw (2000); First Place (children’s choir) at the Festival Internacional de Musica de Cantonigros (Spain: 2002); Second Place (children’s choir) and Second Place (folk) from Kathaumixw 2004; and the Leslie Bell National Award for Choir (2003). Both Apprentice and Concert Choirs have been awarded the Isabelle Mills Award for outstanding choral achievement. In July 2009, the SCC embarked on a performance tour of Austria and the Czech Republic. In Vienna, they participated in the prestigious Summa Cum Laude Festival, and were awarded two first prizes: First Place “with outstanding success” in the category of treble choirs, and the Summa Cum Laude Award of the City of Vienna for best choir of the festival, which they accepted from the Lord Mayor of Vienna. Christmas carol sing-along Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
Deck the Halls
Hark! The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King; Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!” Joyful, all ye nations rise, Join the triumph of the skies; With angelic hosts proclaim, “Christ is born in Bethlehem!”
Deck the halls with boughs of holly, Fa la la la la, la la la la. Tis the season to be jolly, Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Chorus: Hark! The Herald Angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King!”
See the blazing Yule before us, Fa la la la la, la la la la. Strike the harp and join the chorus. Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Christ, by highest Heav’n adored; Christ the everlasting Lord; Late in time, behold Him come, Offspring of a virgin’s womb. Veiled in flesh the Godhead see; Hail incarnate Deity, Pleased as man with man to dwell, Jesus our Emmanuel. Chorus Hail the heav’n born Prince of Peace! Hail the Son of Righteousness! Light and life to all He brings, Ris’n with healing in His wings. Mild He lays His glory by, Born that man no more may die. Born to raise the sons of earth, Born to give them second birth. Chorus
Don we now our gay apparel, Fa la la, la la la, la la la. Troll the ancient Yule tide carol, Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Follow me in merry measure, Fa la la la la, la la la la. While I tell of Yule tide treasure, Fa la la la la, la la la la. Fast away the old year passes, Fa la la la la, la la la la. Hail the new, ye lads and lasses, Fa la la la la, la la la la. Sing we joyous, all together, Fa la la la la, la la la la. Heedless of the wind and weather, Fa la la la la, la la la la.
O Come, All Ye Faithful
Angels We Have Heard on High
Oh come, all ye faithful, Joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; Come and behold him, Born the King of angels;
Angels we have heard on high Sweetly singing o’er the plains, And the mountains in reply Echoing their joyous strains.
Chorus: O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord. God of God, light of light Lo! He abhors not the Virgin’s womb Very God, begotten, not created. Chorus Sing, choirs of Angels, Sing in exultation, Sing, all you citizens of heav’n above. Glory to God in the highest!
Refrain: Gloria, in excelsis Deo! Gloria, in excelsis Deo! Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong? What the gladsome tidings be Which inspire your heavenly song? Refrain Come to Bethlehem and see Christ Whose birth the angels sing; Come, adore on bended knee, Christ the Lord, the newborn King. Refrain
Chorus Yea, Lord we greet Thee Born this happy morning; Jesu, to thee be glory giv’n Word of the Father Now in flesh appearing. Chorus
We Wish You a Merry Christmas We wish you a Merry Christmas; We wish you a Merry Christmas; We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
We won’t go until we get some; We won’t go until we get some; We won’t go until we get some, so bring some out here.
Good tidings we bring to you and your kin; Good tidings for Christmas and a Happy New Year.
We wish you a Merry Christmas; We wish you a Merry Christmas; We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Oh, bring us a figgy pudding; Oh, bring us a figgy pudding; Oh, bring us a figgy pudding and a cup of good cheer.
