A Message From the Mayor Welcome to Art in Public Places, where everybody can experience, explore and celebrate the arts through exhibitions, events, installations, pop-ups and performances in unexpected places. Art in Public Places has been an annual month-long celebration of the arts in Hobsons Bay for many years. 2017 marks the move of Art in Public Places to a biennial event, which will provide an even richer experience for our community. Art in Public Places combines the best of Hobsons Bay’s arts offerings with opportunities for local artists to work with international ground breakers. It brings about connections between arts and businesses across the city, encourages collaboration and highlights the beauty and diversity of Hobson Bay’s natural and built environments. Local trader associations, businesses, event producers, schools, arts networks and groups all join in with Council to present Art in Public Places for the community - and we thank everyone involved for their hard work and support. It’s been said before, but there really is something for everyone to experience through this month of all things cultural. So take a look at this year’s program, mark your favourites on a map, and enjoy experiencing the arts in Hobsons Bay. What a great way to explore our city.

Cr Sandra Wilson Mayor of Hobsons Bay

We acknowledge that we are gathered on the traditional land of the Kulin Nation. We recognise the First People’s relationship to this land and offer our respect to their elders, past and present.

Light Up Logan - the artists Amanda Clark – Larus Canus in Flexus (Gulls in Transition) In this work, Amanda Clark uses light emanating from a translucent cube and projecting into the distance to explore the transient nature of things. The images created, familiar as they are in this location,

Light Up Logan

appear to be in a state of flux, moving and changing colour as the light from within moves and changes. In doing so, they address the transient moments of life, the people and events that touch us momentarily and are gone in the blink of an eye. Amanda Clark is a Melbourne based visual artist working with light based installations, digital imagery and large scale projection.

Elizabeth Hooker Elizabeth Dalton Hooker aka “Paradise” is a multi-disciplinary artist from western Melbourne. Her practice encompasses fine art, drawing and contemporary street art – with each informing the other. Works are created with a bold and distinct style and often referencing the ancient world.

Giovanna Inserra – Carridged Away Giovanna Inserra is a local resident and artist who lives in Laverton. With her honours in Fine Art from RMIT, she works in light, public art, sculpture and lithography. Giovanna’s work primarily investigates the body, creating art works that celebrate history, contemporary society and provoke thought for the everyday person.

Nancy Lang – Who’s Watching Nancy Lang is a Melbourne based multimedia artist. Who’s Watching is a projected video of eyes from fish, birds and mammals that have called the Altona foreshore home. Nature is celebrated through the variety and creativity of these jewel-like eyes. However, rapid change has meant that some of these eyes are now gone; the work reflects on Nancy’s concerns for our environment – our home.

David Murphy – Sight of Sound Newport’s David Murphy will present his work Sight of Sound as a part of Light up Logan. Informed by his passion for music as much as his fine arts practice, Murphy uses water and liquid metals as mediums that respond directly to music to produce a remarkable array of stunning and beguiling projections and images; music becomes visible in real time and with mesmerising beauty in an exchange between the senses. David Murphy is an award winning, multidisciplinary visual artist whose work often explores and reflects the interplay between mathematics, music, sacred geometry and science. These themes have played out through his large scale public art commissions, in ephemeral and event based works as well as his creation of a series of experimental music instruments. The Sight of Sound is on for three nights, with a live, one off performance on Saturday night from David Murphy, Michael Havir and Adam Simmons where the audience can watch sounds, and hear images in a feed-back loop between music and video art. Don’t miss this!

Louis Joel Arts & Community Centre The Louis Joel Arts & Community Centre has a proud history of engaging the community in all forms of art and art based activities. This lighting project will have children and adults creating flowers from recycled bottles and plastics that will be planted in the Louis Joel gardens, taking on a magical and artistic quality when illuminated by solar powered lights. Now, imagine the children of Hobsons Bay were behind this transformation...well, that is exactly what's happening, and everyone’s invited to join in. Students from Seaholme, Newport Lakes, Spotswood, Newport Gardens, Williamstown, Altona North and Williamstown North primary schools are busily creating fantastic critters from recycled materials, under the guidance of their art teachers and local artists, Debbie Harman Qadri and Beka Hannah.

Artists-In-Business

The Artists-In-Business program has been a feature of Art in Public Places, since its inception, more than ten years ago. At that time, the concept was about innovation; how to provide opportunities for local artists, how to encourage and celebrate their practice. Local businesses showcasing the art of talented, emerging artists, who may have otherwise fallen outside the scope of formal gallery exhibitions was not commonplace. Likewise, audiences who may not have been in the habit of visiting traditional ‘art spaces’ were receptive to the experience of encountering art as they went about their day.

Five years ago, Woods Street Arts Space transformed a disused building, the former Laverton Post Office into a vibrant arts space. The face of Woods Street has changed in that time. Blockumentary is a short film that documents that change from the viewpoint of locals, giving light to the stories and the characters that make our community. For the film screening, Lohse Street Reserve will be transformed into an outdoor cinema with a big screen, popcorn and even a red carpet for our very own Laverton stars. In addition to the film screening, music performances and a DJ will get the vibe going, while the area’s restaurants and cafes will tempt tastebuds.

The conversation is going global and the UK’s Forest Fringe comes to Melbourne’s west. UK-based risk-takers (and risk-chasers) Forest Fringe are on site in the western suburbs of Melbourne for the Forest Exchange Lab, a creative residency that explores the relationship between artmakers and the places where they make their art. Forest will be carving out a fringe-away-from-fringe, a space for critical conversation, deep experimentation and the seeding of new work. Forest Fringe co-directors Andy Field (UK) and Deborah Pearson (UK/CAN) together with Associate Artist Mish Grigor (SYD) and three local artists will first spend a week in Footscray, before inhabiting The SUBSTATION and Wood Street Arts Space.

Relaxation Agency RLX:tech

Relaxation Agency RLX:tech by Kate Geck Friday 1 to Sunday 10 September Newport Retail Precinct

You don’t always need to ‘break up with your phone’ in order to practice mindfulness. In fact, make sure you bring it with you to really experience this new commission by Melbourne-based artist Kate Geck. Relaxation Agency RLX:tech is a selfguided augmented reality tour consisting of a series of therapeutic, interactive totems placed around Newport’s retail precinct. The totems are artworks in themselves, but using an app on your handheld device to scan them augments that reality and takes you straight to relaxation. Triggering a series of (tongue-in-cheek) guided meditations, Relaxation Agency RLX:tech can help you to deal with various kinds of social media anxiety — like being unfriended or no one liking your selfie. Download the app and follow the markers which will lead you on a relaxing, mindful walk around Newport.

Kate Geck is a visual artist working in interactive installation, sensory space, sound works, augmented reality, illustration, animation and textile mediums. Based in Melbourne, Geck’s practice is themed around many current social discussions such as social media anxiety, feminism and what she likes to call “mediated vs. unmediated immediacy”. RLX:tech has been commissioned for Channels Festival 2017 in partnerships with the Substation and Art in Public Places. Download the augmented reality Layar app (free for iOS and Android) to view the work, details are available on the Channels website: channelsfestival.net.au/rlxtech-kate-geck

Friday 1 to Saturday 30 September Airtime, Altona Meadows Skate Park Orbital, Central Square, Altona Meadows

Grasslands focusses on the importance of the once-expansive grasslands and the way Indigenous people and animals lived on this local land, prior to colonisation. Facilitated by Wemba Wemba Wergaia man Dean Stewart and local artist Heather van Heerwaarden, Grasslands began earlier this year with cultural talks attended by members of the Hobsons Bay community, at the Loom Room in Williamstown and in Laverton’s McCormack Park, with Dean, sharing ideas and stories of indigenous life in this area as it would have been. Following the talks, artist led workshops responded to the ideas discussed. Using native grasses, a weaving workshop hosted by Yorta Yorta woman Donna Blackall and a Bush Animals sculpture workshop with Gunditjmara woman Bronwyn Razem, were held at the

Performance art viewing with soundscape

Saturday 9 September, 11.00am–1pm Saturday 30 September, 11.00am–1pm

Did you know that Harrington Square is built on the site of an old coal mine? There is a marker stone on the site which marks the location of the Altona coal mine, and recognises the importance of the coal mining industry in Altona’s history. But is there another perspective? Local art makers Wild Books Collective (WBC) think so and they’re planning to respond through a range of installations, collaborations and performances across Harrington Square throughout September. WBC will create a sensory narrative that asks the community of Harrington Square to remember the brown coal (lignite) mine that once dominated the area and to examine the other side of history and our current reliance on coal and fossil fuels. The works encourage connection and

empathy, a spirit of inquisitiveness, and a sense of radical creativity. - A roof installation suggests the conditions that workers in the Altona mine would have experienced but also the impacts of coal dust on the neighbouring communities. - A new mural by Tony Mead explores the themes of history of coal and future of coal. Addressing the inexactness of descriptions of the actual location of the Altona mine, a 45 foot radius around the Harrington Square Coal Mine Monument will indicate the location of the mine mouth. In addition, window treatments and black yarn bombing of trees and bollards around Harrington Square will contribute to the

transformation of Harrington Square into a site for ideas and discussion about coal, history and the future. The Wild Books Collective are three artists, Susan Miller, Stephen Louis and Genevieve Collier, who work collaboratively with community to create art installations and artworks in a broad range of mediums and materials. Brought together with a shared belief in art as a vehicle for social change, WBC have created public artwork in the western suburbs since 2014. facebook.com/variegatedfeather

The restoration and renewal of the life of this waterway. A reflection of recent changes here. They are a metaphorical representation of the people whom have chosen to be guardians, carers, restorers and custodians of the land from the distant past, the present and the future. Geoffrey Ricardo

Selected from submissions received from artists around Australia, Spirits of Time and Place comprises eight sculptures, which explore the symbols and metaphors of the area.

Lower Kororoit Creek has been a focus for Toyota Australia for many years. Together with the Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek and Hobsons Bay City Council, Toyota has worked to highlight the natural beauty of this area. Council, the Victorian State Government and Melbourne Water also contributed to the project.

Geoffrey Ricardo’s Spirits of Time and Place was commissioned for Kororoit Creek as part of a legacy project by Toyota Australia, being the construction of a 2km section of shared trail and site specific public art.

The creek has been a tributary of life for thousands of years. These sculptures can be looked at as playful spirits, totems or mythological creatures that oversee and reflect aspects of the area. They are a discussion of the human influence on the place. The lives lived in this area.

Gravity System Response

Newport

Gravity System Response by Ash Keating

Exploring the energy of paint, air, water and gravity combined, Gravity System Response is a series of six canvas panels by renowned Melbourne-based artist, Ash Keating.

Presented by The Substation and Ash Keating Friday 1 September to Tuesday 31 October The Substation, 1 Market Street, Newport

Installed on The Substation billboards, the work is a broad study of colour and its emotive properties, with swathes of yellows, reds, pinks, magenta and white fields folding in on one another. Cascading down the surface, each intricate variation across the interconnected panels marks the passing of time spent spraying, washing and waiting, exposing Keating’s borderline obsessive commitment to the repetitious and ritualistic layering of paint.

DEBORAH PEARSON (UK/CAN)

HISTORY HISTORY HISTORY In 1956, there was a popular uprising against the USSR in Hungary. The battle was fought primarily form the Corvin Cinema, and led to one of the largest refugee crises of the twentieth century. In a performance spanning the length of the 1956 comedy about football that was scheduled to premiere at the cinema in the week of the uprising, DEBORAH PEARSON unlocks a surprisingly personal story.

20 – 23 SEPTEMBER, 8PM $25/15 TICKETS FROM THESUBSTATION.ORG.AU PRESENTED BY THE SUBSTATION, FOREST FRINGE AND MELBOURNE FRINGE
