Phillips Pottery My earliest memories of clay come from playing with the beautiful blue clay found on our farm in south eastern Ontario. Years later, in 1986, I took my first pottery class with a guild in Beaumont Alberta and was hooked! When we moved to Airdrie Alberta. I was fortunate enough to have Greg and Lori McRitchie of Mudslide Stoneware as neighbors. Greg's pots are still my standard for "quality control". In 1992 our family moved to the Parksville and Nanoose Bay area on Vancouver Island. My work has since progressed and diversified from strictly functional pottery, to include more creative pieces fired in Raku, Tozan, electric, gas, and wood-fired kilns. All pieces are individually hand thrown on a Shimpo wheel or hand built from slabs and extrusions. Consistent quality workmanship is found in the glazes and pieces for those that like to collect completed sets. Currently I am a member of the Nanaimo Potters Guild, past-president of the Arrowsmith Potters Guild located at the Parksville Train station. My work can be found at "Pyromania Pottery", a store located behind the Coombs Country Market in Coombs B.C. just outside of Parksville, Vancouver Island, B.C.

Willow Shack, the up-cycle Studio To say that we are a product of our environment is too true. I was born in Williams Lake, B.C. and grew up on a hunting lodge in the interior of B.C. My dad, a hunter, was a man of few words but with a true talent for creating and improvising. I would watch him for hours while he worked in his saddle shed, a memory that I still hold dear. My mother, who would sew our clothes, can our food, cook and clean (without electricity or running water) and still find time to read aloud to my father every afternoon. Both unknowingly taught me to use what you have, make what you need and take time for family. Who doesn’t need jewelry!! After making jewelry for over 40 year, in 2006 I started making jewelry from vintage and antique flatware. I was then inspired to make all my jewelry from reclaimed materials. I added old metal buttons, silver/brass and copper trays, old keys, vintage tins and bullet caps to my line. Patiken Art I have been intrigued with creating with paint since early childhood when I would spend hours sitting up on my dresser with the big round mirror and painting my face over and over in all patterns and designs and constantly creating art. My childhood medium was simple watercolors and my face was my first canvas. Not surprising, portraits have become one of my great loves in my second childhood. Throughout the past thirty years, while working full time and raising my family, I was constantly enrolled in workshops and courses honing my artistic skills and knowledge of landscapes, seascapes and portraiture. I have painted with oils and acrylic and produced paintings using French dyes on silk and enjoyed the magic of the airbrush. Having recently ended my working career I have now entered the ‘refreshment years’ of my life where my passion to paint now has free reign. The artist in me has now stepped forward holding the reins of my life and I am excited to see what creative wonders I shall produce. Someone once said, that creativity is God’s gift to you…what you do with it is your gift to God. I honor that along with knowing that it truly is a greater reward to give than receive. Therefore, I do not paint objects, rather I focus on painting that which is loved by myself or others. My painting passion explodes when I work on a painting that I know will be personally cherished. No book, lesson or workshop has ever brought forward the creative passion that lies within me and that surfaces when I paint a picture of love for someone, be it a home, a person, a pet, a view. Watching their faces when presented with a painting of their love, is the greatest reward of all! I plan on spending the rest of my life simply enjoying, discovering, expanding and playing with the creative artist within me. She has now arrived.

I have really sensitive skin and hate getting the itchies, so most of them are lined with soft fleece (which is new fabric). I am a stay at home mom, so I work around my two year old's schedule :) So this is a great way to have fun playing with my fabrics and buttons and it also supports my love of thrift store shopping and fabric hunting :)

Janice’s Pet Portraits I came to painting later in life, progressing from watercolour scenes to animals on rocks and finally to painting pet portraits. I've always loved animals, especially dogs. About the Artist: Making Raw Clay Into Functional And Artistic Forms...
I was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. I attended the University of Alberta (U of A) and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Biology. While studying at the U of A, I had the opportunity to spend four months studying at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre on the west coast of Vancouver Island. That is where I developed an interest in marine biology and fell in love with the ocean. After graduation, I travelled throughout Southeast Asia for 6 months then returned to Vancouver Island where I took a job as a consultant marine biologist. I first became interested in pottery in my early 20’s and started collecting pieces for my own use. While completing my Master of Science degree at the University of British Columbia, I took my first pottery class and have been doing pottery ever since. The last five years have served to refine my work. In my spare time, I enjoy walking the beaches and spending time near the ocean. As a marine biologist, my creative inspiration comes from the sea. My business began with sales out of the trunk of my car and through word of mouth. I sold pieces to my co-workers their friends and family. For two consecutive years, I was asked to show and sell my pieces in the Christmas craft fair at the Pacific Biological Station (Fisheries and Oceans Canada) in Nanaimo. From there it has expanded and I now have pieces for sale at the Reflecting Spirit Gallery located in Tofino and Ucluelet. I have lived on the Island for the last 13 years and am currently living in the Comox Valley where I now have a small studio. Big Rock Sculpting By Mike Rebar
Mike started sculpting in sand stone and cement in 2000 and was introduced to stone carving in 2001 by fellow sculptor Ian Howie. He sculpts local granite and marble he harvests from various sites on Vancouver and Quadra Islands off the west coast of British Columbia. His sculptures and garden art are held in private collections all over North America. Mike sees the integral form of each piece inside the stone, then works with both traditional hand tools, carbide chisels and diamond blades until his vision emerges. Fine details are achieved with hand files followed by wet and dry sanding to complete the process. He creates free form and realistic designs that continue to evolve as the stone is worked. His pieces range from 6 inches to 6 feet high and reflect a west coast theme. The body of his work embraces natural themes emulated in powerful freeform designs, birds, seals and Orcas. EmpurpledWares Artist Bio I am a Vancouver Island artist, working in mixed media. After finishing my art degree, I experimented with different areas of art and sculpture, including clay, painting, sculpture, wire work, needle work, and jewellery, and I continue to take classes both for enjoyment as well as to enhance and sharpen my craftsmanship. I fell in love with “Paverpol.” Although I’ve been creating art pieces for over 20 years, I found that working with Paverpol required that I combine all my areas of interests, experience and techniques into one. I revel every day in this new-found ability to create one-ofa-kind works of art for indoor and outdoor use. Paverpol, originally from Holland, is a non toxic liquid medium which cures to a waterproof finish. I use recycled indoor wire and foil to craft and sculpt the base skeleton and then wrap each one with cut strips of recycled cotton shirts. The “clothing” is made from scraps of natural fabrics or old scarves. I scour garage sales, beaches, back lanes and thrift shops for unique and interesting artifacts to form the bases for my sculptures. Oftentimes, it’s these very unique bases that drive my creative process, that drive the form and theme of the sculpture that results. I paint the sculptures with various pigments mixed with varnish which withstands outdoor weathering. The sculptures are then cured for several weeks before being placed outside

Hmmm.... I'll be honest and admit that I just don't know what to write about myself. I get asked quite often how and when I learned how to crochet, so I guess I'll start there. I remember my mom teaching me how to crochet when I was 7 or 8 years old. She made a beautiful afghan and I made little butterfly fridge magnets. She also taught me a few sewing basics. I didn't pick either up again until a few years ago, and this time around it was my mother-in-law teaching me. My own mom is no longer with us, but I love that I'll always have memories of her helping me learn new skills.

ROY HANCLIFF PHOTOGRAPHY Roy Hancliff has become a world renowned inflight bird photographer, you can find his work in art galleries, wildlife magazine covers, and on the Internet. Below is a little bit about Roy in his own words. I was born in Oxford England. My first real camera was Nikon F2S with photomic head, longer ago than I care to remember. I moved to Spain in 1985 with my wife Sharon for a better climate and simpler life. Photography took a back seat as we carved out a living. We finally moved to Canada in 2003, settling in Salmon Arm, British Columbia. I now had the time to dedicate to my passion of photography that had been put on hold for so long. I chose to concentrate on Birds in flight as they have always intrigued me. I wanted to capture the beauty of nature that is not normally visible to the naked eye. Even Birds that we consider to be common and uninteresting come into their own element when wings are frozen in mid flight. I often find myself sitting in a hide at temperatures of -15 C trying to capture that all important shot. Or in the case of the Hummingbirds +35 C with sweat running down the backs of my legs but I would not have it any other way. I study their flight patterns and feeding habits for hours to determine where they will come into the frame, every bird has a completely different approach as they feed. I think it would be fair to say that whatever the shot it is calculated and taken in my mind before I even begin. I hope that you enjoy my site and it has given you a different perspective into Bird and Insect inflight photograpy. Randy Hall is a Vancouver Island photographer specializing in nature photography, whether it is capturing natural settings such as seascapes or forest landscapes or the plants and animals that inhabit this part of British Columbia. After years of camping on the island and working in the forest industry, Randy gained a real appreciation for nature. He considers himself a landscape photographer first, but also an opportunistic wildlife photographer. “My photos are my interpretation of works by a true master… Mother Nature”. Randy has developed a style that shows enhanced colours and contrast. When many people think of contrast, they think colours and tones. There can also be contrast in content. An example of this can be seen in some of Randy’s early morning images of Parksville Bay. Towering or threatening clouds can instill the feeling of unrest, while the calm waters of the bay say serenity. “It’s this type of scene, and the incorporation of weather, that interests me the most”. Randy attributes much of his success to his friendship with local professional, Craig Carmichael and to the support of his wife, Cindy. It’s one thing to take photos and produce works of art, but it’s difficult to take that next step and get it out there for all to see. This is where your support team plays a critical role.

Marty Steele (Piano accompanist for Bobbi Walker)
Marty Steele is an accomplished keyboardist/arranger/producer who is a master of playing the bass lines in his left hand, encompassing a vast repertoire of songs and styles. His performance projects have ranged from the pioneer Hammond B-3 artist Jimmy Smith tribute (with his own quartet) to the Beatles' 50th anniversary tribute (as a guitarist/vocalist with the Glen Foster Group). His groups include NAVICA (who performed at the Victoria Jazz Festival in 2013) and the MARTYS with Joan Wallace. Every summer you can see him busking down at the harbour on sunny days.
Marimba Jangano
"Marimba Jangano is a youth African music ensemble. Jangano consists of 9 marimba players, all between the age of 10 and 15. After forming in 2009, Jangano has been mentored and developed by the leadership of marimba instructors/ performers Jasmine and Fahlon Smith. Marimba Jangano plays traditional Zimbabwean music on traditional Zimbabwean marimbas (a large wooden xylophone). In the five years of playing together, Jangano has played at numerous events such as Kidfest, the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay, and the Maple Sugar Festival, just to name a few. Jangano has recently been focusing on expanding their repertoire, and flourishing as young performers. This energetic, joyful group has a rhythm that will keep you dancing!"
The Coombs Old Time Fiddlers
Old Time Fiddling is a music genre and has nothing to do with age as we have fiddlers from pre-school age to many in their 90’s. In fact the very best way to have the music we love live on after us is by involving youngsters. One of the best ways to get youngsters involved is in the school system. A good way to promote fiddling is by asking to hear more of it on either TV or radio. There is an app. called “cbcmusic” that is available through itunes. This is a free little app that works on either your computer, ipad or your smart phone. The app. features music genres of many different types from classical to hip hop. The CBC is receptive to hearing from people if they would like something added and I have asked them to include a fiddle stream – I got a response saying, they will if and when they get enough requests! If we want to hear more “Old Time Fiddle Music” then the best thing to do is be proactive. You can contact CBC and let your request be known at: Radio Music radiomusic@cbc.ca It doesn’t have to be long and complex a simple request for a fiddle music stream on “cbcmusic” would be all you need to do. Throughout the province the BCOTFA is comprised of 13 active branches. Most branches have weekly music jams; many hold monthly old time dances; some host annual fiddle contests; others feature jamborees; most host concerts featuring nationally recognized fiddle stars, and at least one branch hosts monthly Contra dances.
