C O LO U R S O F P E E N YA
This book is a colour documentation of Peenya, Bangalore’s Industrial Hub. I made this as a part of my research for a colour based installation that I will be placing within the Peenya Metro Station. The book showcases a set of carefully selected images that express and define Peenya in terms of a colour palette. Peenya has a very dull and pale tonal association, dominated with browns, beiges and greys which would be accentuated with sudden appearances of bright colour in vastu themed houses, painted carts and trucks and bright blouses worn by the women in this society. These sudden contrasts became the basis of my colour study. It was important to represent both the vibrant and the dullness. I have carefully extracted my colours to create a definitive palette, so that these swatches come together to create a palette for Peenya. Each image clicked is exposed to stay very close to the actual colour that you can see. The images were then analysed to create a wide palette of 40 colours, a palette of light, medium and dark colours and a more defined palette of 5 colours per image.

A lot of Peenya’s walls, sheds and shutters are adorned with movie posters of the local film industry. These posters are usually bright and vivid in their colour scheme and create high amounts of contrast with the dull brown tones of Peenya.

When in Peenya, you can spot a lot of trucks coming in delivering and picking up industrial good, these trucks are often decorated with hand-painted type, often in bright primary and secondary colours.

Some of the buildings in Peenya stand out even when they are located much further away because of their colour schemes. The purple and yellow in this image can’t possibly be missed.

These are houses that are located in line with the metro, which were broken down in order to expand the highway road and accommodate the metro. The brown exposed bricks are an important symbolical (of change) inclusion in the colour palette of Peenya.

The monotony is often broken with alternative buildings painted in really bright colours. The building on the left is a bakery, and on the right is a public school.

Carts that sell chai, meals, cigarettes and juices are found in every other street in Peenya and have a very distinctive blue colour to them. This lime juice seller and chai kadai are located at the left exit of the Peenya Metro Station.

A lot of the workshops in Peenya are painted in dull grey with asbestos roofs. The workshops are in different shades of blues and greys, creating dull and cool environments. This is an image of an automobile service center.

Dominant in the Peenya palette is the blue of the sky. The sun is pretty sharp in this area with no shade available. This was taken on a barren road, as you make your way into the industrial area.
