PROJECT - ART IN TRANSIT

SRISHTI SCHOOL OF ART, DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY

ABOUT ART IN TRANSIT ‘ART IN TRANSIT’ is a live undertaking by the SRISHTI SCHOOL OF ART DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY for the BMRC and will focus on the Peenya metro station as a pilot project. the project offers the participant an opportunity to be a part of the creation of an immersive art and design experiance that marks the location of the stationand its architecture. The larger objective if the project is to develop cultural links between different location through interactive means creating new shared experiances for the city. The namma metro is changing the urban landscape as well as social practices. the stations are new and shiny and a little bit alien. the State and the citizens are in process of envolving the systems and practices to engage with this new urban and social space. Participants will first work on documenting and mapping the metro experiance view using various methords and tools. They will be exposed

2

INTRODUCTION to a more lyrical expression of the human journey the rythmns of inclusive oral and literary traditions. these initial studies and outreach will be shared with the officials of BMRC and the public at large. Based on the feedback, we shall finalise the content and strategy to work on formal explorations which would include exhibition + lighting design, installation design, public furniture design, surface graphics (including murals, collage and print), moving image, sound + light installation, interactive experiance + gaming and oral + literary expression. The scale and the time bound nature of the project make it both at a formal and a conceptual level. Participants should be well versed in basic design tools and need to be ready for a physically rigorous engagement outdoors. Material curiosity and spatial undestanding are added qualities.

metro station a destination place and ultimately motivate people to use public transport.

For any space to look beautiful and have its own identity, beautification is needed. Art in transit the project focus on beautification of public space (i.e. Peenya metro station)

“WORK IN PROGRESS”

I was looking at dead spaces because these spaces are just left unused and are not at all interesting and lively. In my proposal for the project i have used different colours and patterns/ geomatrical shapes to make the space dynamic. Primary and Secondary research were done followed by lot of discussion, tasks and site visit to come up with a focus idea to be followed.

Story behind the title As the name says progress refer to the work which continuesly progresses in ones mind, when you are doing a project which gets better with each discussion and brainstorming sessions. working with real client make you realise the pros and corns which you’ll have while implementing the project and hence one has to be very confident himself before presenting the idea to other, so its a continuous process of thinking.

The Project focus was to make peenya

NAMMA METRO Namma Metro also known as Bangalore Metro, is a metro system for the city of Bangalore, Karnataka, India. The agency responsible for its construction is the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL), a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Karnataka. The first stretch (Reach 1) between Baiyyappanahalli and M.G. Road was inaugurated on 20 October 2011. Reach 3 & 3A between Sampige Road and Peenya Industrial Area was inaugurated on 1 March 2014. A mass transit system for Bangalore was initially conceived as a public-private partnership (PPP) in 1993. The detailed project report (DPR) for Phase I of Namma Metro project was prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and submitted to the BMRCL in May 2003. The final approval on a scheme that incorporated the expertise of DMRC and RITES Limited did not come until

6

April 2006.The DPR prepared by DMRC envisaged a 33 km (21 mi) elevated and underground rail network with 32 stations for Phase I of the project. Construction work for Phase I of the project was scheduled to start in 2005 but was delayed by a February 2006 change of government in Karnataka and continued debate over whether the project was financially feasible and appropriate for the city. Finally, on 25 April 2006 the Indian Cabinet approved the project, which was then budgeted at more than INR54 billion (US$870 million) (Later revised to INR116.09 billion (US$1.9 billion) for Phase I). In 2006, Navayuga Engineering was awarded the contract to construct Reach 1 of the East-West corridor. The foundation stone for the Phase I construction was laid by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on 24 June 2006, and civil construction on Reach I of the line, between M.G. Road and Baiyyappanahalli, commenced on April 07.

Proposed new lines and extensions to existing lines – under Phase 2

Shrish bhadani Art in Transit Srishti school of art, design & Technology 2014

7

PLANNING Phase I Phase I spans a length of 42.3 km and consists of 2 lines, Implementation of Phase I has been divided into 4 “reaches” and 2 underground sections. It will be fully opened for service from March 2015. As Chief Minister Siddaramaiah informed the Legislative Assembly in January 2014, the total project cost is expected to be INR138.45 billion (US$2.2 billion) due to cost escalation following unexpected delays in meeting the deadlines. The delays result in a cost escalation of INR34.73 billion (US$560 million). In 2007, BMRCL announced that it would incorporate a northern extension (from Yeshwanthapura to Hesaraghatta Cross) and part of the southern extension (from RV Road to Puttenahalli) in Phase I, thus extending the length of Phase I network

to about 42 km (26 mi), with 40 stations. The objective was to connect the metro to the Outer Ring Road at both ends, and also cover the industrial areas of Peenya in the north-west, thereby providing better connectivity. In October 2008, the Government of Karnataka approved this extension, which would cost an additional INR15.92 billion (US$260 million). Phase II The detailed project report (DPR) for Phase II was prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. The high power committee (HPC), in July 2011, gave in-principle clearance to proceed with Phase II. The Karnataka government gave inprinciple approval to Phase II of the Namma Metro project on 3 January 2012. The estimated total cost for Phase II is around INR264.05 billion (US$4.3 billion).

13.79 km underground, 0.48 km at grade and 57.825 km elevated, and adds 61 stations to the network, of which 12 are underground. Construction of the second phase will begin in 2014, after completion of the first phase. On 28 February 2014, the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the work will be completed within five years. Phase 2 will include extension of Phase 1 corridors as well as the construction of two new lines. Proposed work includes a 13.9km underground stretch in the new 21.25km Gottigere–Nagawara line. Phase III The detailed project report (DPR) for Phase III is being prepared by RITES. 133 km phase 3 of metro will connect Nagawara and Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) by a 25-km line; and a 17-km line from the Nice Ring Road to Toll Gate via Magadi Road.

Phase II covers a span of 72.095 km –

ART IN PUBLIC Public art is art in different media that has been planned and executed with the intention of being staged in the physical public domain, usually outside and accessible to all. Public art is significant within the art world, amongst curators, commissioning bodies and practitioners of public art, to whom it signifies a working practice of site specificity, community involvement and collaboration. Public art may include any art which is exhibited in a public space including publicly accessible buildings, but often it is not that simple. Rather, the relationship between the content and audience, what the art is saying and to whom, is just as important if not more important than its physical location.

TRINITY

TRINITY METRO STATION SKETCH In this task the whole class was divided into six groups, where every group was given a Metro station starting from MG road metro station to Baiyyapanhalli metro station. Me along with five other group-mates got Trinity metro station, as the metro station is located in the city, surrounded by buildings on either sides so it was difficult for us to find many viewing points. So I focused on the structure and its immediate surrounding with the help of reflections, entry/exit points, station entrance, construction, buildings around it, space utilization etc

This sketch is drawn from under the bridge to capture the sence of disturbance that the bees face for every train passes.

It is drawn from outside SBI branch where the objective was to show the west entry/ exit point of the metro.

It is drawn from outside the zynga office, the objective was to capture the east entry/exit point of the metro throught reflection.

15

TRINITY METRO STATION METAPHOR After completing the sketching task at the trinity metro station, we were asked to come up with a metaphor individualy that we can compare with the Metro. So i, made this sketch, where the building around the metro station are mocking at it because they are all covered in nice paint, shiny glass panels and even LED lights and on the other hand even though the metro is like the most expensive structure in the city, its pillars not painted and has posters, For example if a person wears torn and dirty clothes other people make fun of that person and tend to avoid him/her.

FIRST ITERATION

IDEA 1 MOTIVATION

This would encourage people to use the stairs and also the look of the boring stairs becomes interesting and eye-catching.

Observation- Peenya metro station Peenya metro station is in the out-skirts of Bangalore. The crowd on the station is very low compared to other metro stations. Every station as Peenya Station has the staircases along with the escalator on the side but because of new technologies people have started ignoring the usage of staircase. The staircase looks tiring and boring to people and also when you have an escalator on the same side why would anyone use a staircase . To make usage of the staircase and also to add an interesting concept behind it , I thought of sticking motivational stickers on the rise of each stair which indicates the amount of calories burnt per stair climb, different type of illestrations, quotes etc.

20

Shrish bhadani Art in Transit Srishti school of art, design & Technology 2014

IDEA 2 MUSICAL INSTALLATION The second idea that crossed my mind related to the staircases of the metro station was Installing piano sound onto each stair so that when people step on it, it would play a note. This was again to motivate people to use the staircase instead of taking escalator. So whenever people step on the staircase the piano note would play. This would help people change the behaviour of using escalator and would add an attraction in the metro station. The Piano Stairs were executed by Volkswagen in Stockholm, Sweden in October 2009 as a fun, interactive sound/ music experience that encouraged public to use the stairs in preference to an escalator. Installed at a subway stairwell, the Piano Stairs succeeded in attracting 66

per cent of pedestrians to use the stairs rather than the escalator The main reason for me to choose stairs as my canvas is because it is something you will always cross before entering the metro train, so people don’t have to specially take out time to experience my art work. And Staircase, despite playing an important role in the station does not have an importance.

21

IDEA 3 TRANSFORMING YELLOW LINE

the security guard will not have to take the trouble of warning people again and again for the same reason.

IDEA 4 3D PAINTING ON THE WALL

The third idea what I thought upon was the Yellow line on the platform. Those lines are basically made as a sign for people, to tell them not to go beyond that point for safety reasons. But that is left upon the people to understand why there is a yellow line on the floor, for some people it may just be a design pattern on the floor. People generally see it as a pattern on the ground because they don’t have that time to think about it. So what I thought was to transform the yellow lines into a 3D signage which would indicate that it is a warning for them to not to go beyond that point. This would help people realise that there is a warning to not to cross that line and also as seen in all the Bangalore metro stations ,

Peenya Metro Station as other metro stations of Bangalore have walls and pillars that has not been coloured also. If the Government has already invested a huge amount in metro stations why not invest a little more in the exterior and interior

22

Shrish bhadani Art in Transit Srishti school of art, design & Technology 2014

Shrish bhadani Art in Transit Srishti school of art, design & Technology 2014

look of these stations. When you look at stations abroad , they look as if it was designed to be a shopping mall and not a metro station .The idea that I thought was to make the walls and pillars of the station look interesting and more appealing to people. This would add an attraction to the metro station and would give it a better look . The space would be more dynamic in nature.

23

Idea 5 LIGHT INSTALLATIONS Metro stations are not just dull. But are dirty and underlit, they all look the same. What would it be like if we used colours, lightings and decorations to make it easier for users to navigate the system and the City. Consistent identity for all the metro station is both boring and impractical, particularly in a system that carries so many tourists and visitors from out of town.

Idea 6 3D STICKER ON THE GROUND To make the metro station look more attractive to the people we can also stick some 3D pictures on the ground .3D pictures that would indicate the historical backgrounds of Bangalore. Old pictures of this place and letting the people know how this city looked earlier. This would not only attract people but will also have an impact on people letting them know more about the place they are living in or are visiting. These were some of the ideas, to improvise Peenya Metro Station . These ideas if are implemented would make a lot of difference to the station and the people visiting it.

MAPPING Firstly a circle with radius of two kms was made on the google map with Srishti N2 campus as the center. Then the circle was divided in eighteen slices and in a group of two, every one was given a slice to explore and find out things which are not shown on the google maps.

• • • • • •

Hospitals Government Buildings Non-government buildings Animal grazing lands Under construction sites New paths

Groups were given the choice to decide about the different type of lens they want to use to explore their slice. Me with a groupmate were given the area of old yehalanka with tons of roads and small paths and a bit of forest land. It took us almost one day to explore the place and based on the exploration we looked at • • • • •

PEENYA METAPHOR BRAINSTORM

The idea was comparison between Necessity and Luxury. Hence it is this aspirational element, that we are targeting in people. We need people to realise that using the metro is a like a personal up gradation in their mode of transportation. Thus, co-relating to the Metro with a range of personal health and hygiene care products, that make you want to aspire to a better way of living and are also a necessity to our lifestyle.

SECOND ITERATION

IDEA As Peenya is an industrial area and to give the same essence of the locality inside the metro station, I decided to do a mechanical installation, which will be an interactive activity for the people.

56

INSPIRATION BEHIND THE INSTALLATION As metro is a moving object and the purpose is to connect one place to another. I took the adjective connect and movement as one of the keyword for the installation, the other inspiration come from the locality itself which is industrial, so combining these two, I come up with an idea to design an installation which shows connectivity, movement and industrial.

Shrish bhadani Art in Transit Srishti school of art, design & Technology 2014

This place is the main corridor for people to go towards the platform, hence doing something there will have more visibility to the people passing by. More over the other side of the corridor is blocked so using that space wouldn’t effect the flow of the crowd.

PROPOSAL

IDEATION ENLIVENING DEAD SPACES The main idea behind is to give life to the dead spaces in the metro station in order to give them a meaning, which can attract commuters to take notice and explore it. After doing all different kind of material exploration, refer other works, space exploration, form exploration, idea around the city, sketches, drawings I am Inspired by the idea of painting.

60

VISUALIZATION I have taken the pillar which is next to the staircase going from ground to first floor. The pillar is centrally located in the station which can attract commuters. The Idea of geometrical pattern is inspired by the lines and patterns at the station. MATERIALS- Paint COST- 5000 to 6000 TIME- 5 to 8 days

WAY FORWARD

CONCLUSION

As its a work in progress concept i would like to take my ideas forward. and actually execute it in next semester.

Working for such a big client (BMRCL) with very high level of expectation is a great opportunity. It made me explore so many places in bangalore like art gallerys, museums to see other people artwork and get inspiration. October exhibition was one of the most exciting experience. Coordinating with fellow mates and getting their artwork printed with so much of tension & pressure was just amazing. Being a visual communication student i have explored so many thing but never thought so deep about it. This project was a challange for me in term of designing/ visualizing a concept was something new for me. I learned that ideas do not depend on aesthetics to make an impact but largely depend on practicality of the design.
